American Slang – On Fleek, Snatched

What is the difference between an idiom and slang,

and how do you learn them as a non-native English speaker?

그리고 영어를 모국어로 하지 않는 화자들은 그것들을 어떻게 알게 되는걸까요?

Someone asked me recently, what is the difference between an idiom and slang?

요즘 숙어와 속어의 차이가 무엇인지 제게 많이들 물어와요.

And I thought, you know what? I’m not sure!

그렇지만 저도 확실하게 아는 건 아니에요!

So I did a little research, I did a little thinking about it, and I got it.

그래서 공부를 간단하게 했더니 그 차이를 알 수 있었답니다.

The two main differences are:

두 가지 중요한 차이점이 있습니다.

First, an idiom is something almost every native speaker of a language will know,

먼저, 숙어는 거의 모든 화자들이 알고있다는 거예요.

and slang isn’t.

하지만 속어는 그렇지 않죠.

Slang is something that many native speakers won’t understand.

속어는 많은 화자들이 이해하지 못해요.

So for example, the idiom, it’s raining cats and dogs,

예를 들어, 'It's raining cats and dogs.' 라는 숙어가 있어요.

which means it’s raining really hard.

비가 정말 많이 온다는 뜻이죠.

You could ask any native speaker this and he or she would know what it meant.

어느 누구에게 무슨 뜻인지 물어도 대부분은 다 알거예요.

But if you said, what does ‘bae’ mean?

그런데 'bae' 가 무슨 뜻인지 물어본다면 어떻게 될까요?

This is slang, most people probably wouldn’t know.

그건 속어죠. 아마 대부분의 사람들이 모를거예요.

There, it depends entirely upon who you ask.

이건 당신이 누구에게 묻냐에 달린 문제겠죠.

The second main difference, longevity.

두번째 차이점은 '수명' 이에요.

How long is something in use?

얼마나 오랫동안 쓰이냐는 거죠.

Let’s go back to the idiom 'it’s raining cats and dogs.'

'It's raining cats and dogs' 로 다시 돌아가봅시다.

I’ve seen a couple of different opinions, but it’s been in use for centuries, since the 1500s or 1600s.

다른 의견들을 두어가지 보긴 했지만, 이 숙어는 1500년 혹은 1600년 대부터 쓰였다고 합니다.

That’s a long time ago.

정말 오래 된 것이죠.

Slang, on the other hand, is developed, used, and then dies before too long.

반면 속어는 만들어지고, 쓰이다가 오래 되기 전에 없어져버리죠.

For example, when I was working on this video,

I asked friends on my Facebook page:

제 페이스북 페이지에서 친구들에게 물어봤죠.

What slang are you familiar with?

어떤 속어를 가장 많이 쓰세요? 하고요.

I got lots of awesome answers.

정말 많은 답변들을 받을 수 있었어요.

A couple of people said ‘on fleek’.

몇몇은 'on fleek' 이라고 했어요.

Then someone else said, that’s kind of passed.

그런데 그 말은 유행이 지났다는 사람들도 있었답니다.

It’s been replaced by ‘snatched’.

'snatched' 로 대체 되었다고 하더라고요.

When I was talking to my husband David about this, he said, ‘on fleek’ is kind of, like 3 years ago.

제 남편 David에게 얘기 했더니, 'on fleek' 이 3년 전에나 쓰던 말이라고 했어요.

What do these terms mean?

이 말들은 뭘 의미하는 걸까요?

We’ll get to that in a second. The point is,

곧 알게 될거지만, 요점은 이거예요.

some slang might only be in use for a year or two

몇몇 속어는 1, 2년 정도만 쓰이죠.

before it’s replaced with new slang.

다른 새로운 속어로 대체 되기 전 까지요.

So if many, maybe even most native speakers don’t understand slang, what’s the deal?

만약 많은 화자들이, 어쩌면 대부분의 화자들이 속어를 이해하지 못한다면, 어떻게 될까요?

Slang is the creation of the younger generation.

속어는 젊은 세대에서 만들어집니다.

They play with language much more, they create new ways to use words and even create new words.

그들은 언어를 가지고 놀죠. 단어를 사용하는 새로운 방식을 만들기도 하고, 새로운 단어를 만들기도 해요.

So if you’re trying to understand people in their teens and twenties

만약 당신이 10대나 20대들을 이해시켜야 하는 상황에 있어요.

and know no slang, you’ll probably feel left out in some conversation.

그런데 당신이 속어를 하나도 모른다면, 당신은 동 떨어진 대화를 하고 있다고 느낄 거예요.

When I made a recent video on slang

제가 최근에 영상을 하나 만들 때였어요.

on the use of the word ‘dumb’ as slang,

'dumb' 을 속어로 사용하는 것에 대해서였죠.

I had lots of people say, I’ve never heard that word used that way.

많은 사람들이 단어를 그런 식으로 사용하는 건 들어본 적이 없다고 했었어요.

My husband works in a high school, so he picks up on lots of slang.

제 남편이 고등학교에서 일하기 때문에, 그는 속어를 잘 이해한답니다.

That’s why this summer is going to be the Summer of Slang.

그래서 이번 여름은 '속어의 여름'이 될거예요.

Because if you don’t know people who are using slang,

속어를 쓰는 사람들과 아는 사이가 아니라면

then you have no idea what these terms mean.

당신은 속어들이 뭘 뜻하는지 전혀 모를테니까요.

When they pop up, when you see them, when you hear them, you’re at a loss.

어쩔 줄을 모르고 있겠죠.

Today, we’re going to learn ‘on fleek’ and ‘snatched’.

오늘은 'on fleek' 과 'snatched' 에 대해 알아볼거예요.

As I said, ‘snatched’ is perhaps replacing ‘on fleek’.

'snatched' 가 'on fleek'을 대체하는 말이라고 언급 했었는데요.

They have the same meaning, and that is, really great.

이 둘은 '완벽하다' 라는 똑같은 의미를 가지고 있어요.

Awesome, perfectly executed.

대박이다, 완벽하게 잘 어울린다 이런거죠.

It’s a very positive way of describing something.

정말 좋게 말할 때 쓰는 말이에요.

And it can describe anything from your eyebrows to your clothes to something you’re eating.

당신의 눈썹부터 옷, 그리고 먹는 것에도 쓸 수 있답니다.

Your hair is on fleek.

너 그 머리 인생 머리다.

That outfit is snatched.

그거 옷 진짜 잘 어울린다.

These are great compliments.

엄청 칭찬하는 말들이죠.

A good way to get context around slang, to help you understand how slang is used,

속어가 쓰이는 맥락을 알고 싶을 때 좋은 방법은

go to Instagram and search the hashtag.

인스타그램에서 해시태그를 검색하는 거예요.

#onfleek has something like 1.7 million public posts

#onfleek 은 약 170만 개의 게시글에 있었는데요.

so you can see what exactly is being described as ‘on fleek’.

가서 보시면 'on fleek'이 무엇을 말하는지 정확하게 알 수 있을거예요.

And ‘snatched’, #snatched has about 350,000 public posts.

그리고 #snatched는 35만 개의 게시글에서 볼 수 있었습니다.

On fleek – a two-word, phrase, stress will be on the second word.

'on fleek'은 두 개의 단어로 이루어진 구입니다. 강세는 두번째 단어에 와요.

On fleek. On fleek.

That's so on fleek.

'on fleek'에 대해서는 여기까지예요.

Snatched ends in the CH-T cluster. That’s a little tricky,

'snatched'는 'CH-T' 발음으로 끝나요. 좀 까다롭죠.

you might want to practice it slowly: snatched.

Most slang takes actual English words and uses them in a different way.

대부분의 속어는 실제로 있는 영단어들을 사용하되, 그것들을 다른 방식으로 쓰는 거예요.

Fleek, however, is a made up word.

그러나 'fleek'은 만들어진 단어입니다.

Not a word that already existed in American English.

영어에 원래 있던 말이 아니었죠.

Snatched and on fleek.

'snatched' 와 'on fleek'

If someone uses your name and ‘snatched’ or ‘on fleek’ in the same sentence, it’s a good thing.

누군가 당신의 이름과 함께 'snatched', 혹은 'on fleek' 을 말했다면, 좋은 일이죠.
