We’re going over the real pronunciation, not the full pronunciation,

but the one that actually gets used in spoken English.

It is important to understand what we’re doing here studying reductions.

We start this video with ‘this’.

一つ目の単語はTHISです。

This is number 21 in the most common words in English.

もっとも多く登場する英単語トップ100の 21番目の単語です。

It’s not usually going to be pronounced THIS.

通常はこのような発音はしません。

It’s usually going to be pronounced a lot more quickly than that, unstressed.

通常はもっとずっと速く、弱く発音します。

“This is what I’m talking about.”

This is what I’m talking about. （私が言ってるのはそれよ）

Sometimes it’s more stressed,

強調することもあります。

“Not that one, this one.”

It depends on how it’s being used.

シチュエーションによって変わってきます。

But much of the time,

this word will be unstressed, said very quickly: this.

軽く、速く言います。

22: But.

No. 22はBut.

This word is usually going to be unstressed.

基本は軽く読みます。

In those cases I would probably write it phonetically with a schwa.

発音記号で書くとしたら このようにシュワで表わすでしょう。

I wanted to stop in, but I was already running late. （寄りたかったんだけど、遅刻しそうだったから）

“I wanted to stop in, but I was already running late.”

But, but, but, but, but I, but I.

The T here links into the next word with a Flap T

次の音が母音または二重母音の場合

if the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong.

Tはフラップさせて次の単語に行きます。

If the next word begins with a consonant, then it’s a Stop T.

次が子音であればストップTになります。

“We wanted to stop by, but we were already running late.”

We wanted to stop by, but we were already running late.

There, it's a stop T. Said very quickly.

ここでは次が子音なのでストップTですね。

Unless someone is exaggerating on purpose:

よっぽど大げさに強調して言うときは

BUT!

BUT！

You won’t hear this word with a True T.

こんな風になります。

23: His.

次はHISです。

Oh, this one is fun.

これは面白いですよ！

This one does have a reduction.

音を落としてリダクションにします。

It’s really common to drop the H in this word.

Hを読まないことは本当に一般的です。

What’s his name?

What’s his name? （彼の名前、なんだっけ？）

What’s his? What's his?

What’s his? What’s his.

HIS becomes ‘iz’.

HISがizという発音になります。

Said very quickly, reduced.

素早く、リダクションさせて。

This is much more natural than making it sound stressed, fully pronounced:

きちんと読むよりもこう読んだ方がずっと自然です。

What’s his name?

What’s his name?

What’s his name?

What’s his name?

Hmm, that doesn't sound right.

これはないですね。

"What's his name?" sounds much better.

これが本当の発音です。

24: By.

No.24はBYです。

This word doesn’t reduce,

これはリダクションにはなりません。

none of the sounds change or are dropped,

どの音も変わったり落としたりはしません。

but it’s usually unstressed and said very quickly:

ただ、弱く、速く読みます。

We’ll be right by the door.

We’ll be right by the door. （ドアのすぐ近くにいるわね）

By the, by the, by the-- unstressed, not too clear.

By the, by the, by the. 弱く。モゴモゴした感じで。

But we need this contrast of stressed and unstressed to sound natural when speaking English.

この強弱のコントラストがあると 英語は自然に聞こえるのです。

25: From.

No.25はFROMです。

This is often said very quickly,

これは通常ものすごく速く読みます。

and I would write the vowel phonetically as the schwa: from, from.

発音記号で書くならこれもシュワ /ə/です。

When the schwa is followed by the M,

シュワのあとにMが続く場合

it gets absorbed by the schwa, so what I’m saying is,

シュワはMに飲み込まれてしまいます。 どういうことか言いますと……

you can say the word so quickly that you’re not even trying to make a vowel: frm, frm, frm.

あまりに速すぎて 母音は入る余地がないということです。

I’ll be back from work at three. （3時には仕事から戻るわ）

I’ll be back from work at three.

From, from work. Very fast.

From, from work. ものすごく速く！

If I said this sentence with each word being clear, no reductions,

もしこの文章を一つ一つきちんと発音したら

what would it sound like?

どんな風になるでしょう？

I’ll be back from work at three.

I’ll be back from work at three.

I’ll be back from work at three.

I’ll be back from work at three.

Pretty robotic, not natural.

不自然ですよね （ネイティヴはroboticと表現します）。

Even though reductions might seem wrong, they might seem lazy,

リダクションって、ただのめんどくさがりみたいに

they’re right, because they’re part of a bigger picture.

思えるかもしれません。確かにそうかも。

Rhythmic contrast in English.

でも英語にはリズミカルな強弱のコントラスト が不可欠なのです。

26: They.

No.26 THEY

Let’s just start out with a sample sentence.

例文を見てみましょう。

They already left.

They already left. （彼らはもう出発したわ）

They already left.

Unstressed. Said very quickly. They, they, they.

弱く、速く。They, they, they.

Sounds don’t really change, it doesn’t reduce, but it’s unstressed.

音はあまり変わりません。ただ、弱く読みます。

やれやれ。もう26個目なのに

and so far, every single one either reduces or is often unstressed.

リダクションか、弱く読む単語しか 出てきていません！

No.27はWEです。

It's just like the pronoun 'they'.

代名詞のTHEYと同じで

Not usually stressed in a sentence.

センテンスの中では基本弱く読みます。

We, we, we. 素早く言います。

Not a reduction, we don’t change or drop a sound,

but unstressed.

28: Say.

No.28はSAYです。

Oh my gosh, this is a content word.

ついに！内容語が来ました！

This is a verb and it is usually stressed in a sentence.

これは動詞で、基本は強調して読む単語です。

It took us 28 words to get here.

ここに来るまでに28個も単語がありました。

If this doesn’t show you the importance of using reductions

リダクションがいかに

and speaking with a rhythmic contrast,

リズムよく強弱のコントラストをつけながら

making some words unstressed and less clear,

Up-down shape of intonation: say.

上から下へ弧を描くように。

S consonant, AY diphthong.

子音のSからAYという二重母音へ。

We need jaw drop for that.

二重母音を発音するときは下顎を下げます。

There’s something interesting about ‘say’, ‘said’, and ‘says’.

実はsay, said, saysの二重母音は

The diphthong changes.

すべて違うんですよ。

29: Her.

No.29はHERです。

Okay, we’re back to a word that reduces.

またリダクションする単語に戻ってきました。

It’s very common to pronounce this word with no H.

これもHは読まないことがほとんどです。

It becomes ‘er’.

こんな風に。

What’s her name? （彼女、名前なんていうの？）

What’s her name?

Er, er, er.

Er, er, er.

When we drop the beginning H,

最初のHを落とすときは

we take the word and attach it to the end of the word before.

ERを前の単語に繋げてしまいます。

What's her. What's her name?

こんな風に。

There are several words where we drop the H,

Hを読まない単語はいくつかあります。

30: She.

No. 30はSHEです。

Unstressed.

弱く読みます。

You could probably even reduce it by dropping the vowel, and just making a quick ‘sh’ sound.

母音を完全に落としてSHだけの音でもいいですよ。

Let me try that in a sentence.

例をあげましょう。

We don’t think she knows.

We don’t think she knows. （彼女が知っているとは思わない）

We don’t think she knows.

I’d say that works.

これでもいけます。

So you can put a quick ‘ee’: I don't think she knows.

EEを速く言うか

Or you can drop the vowel: I don't think she knows.

完全に母音を落とすか。

And it sounds pretty much the same.

いずれにしても同じような音になります。

She knows. She knows.

She knows. She knows.

So there.

Our 30 most common words in English are done, and there’s only one word,
