I guarantee you’re not saying these words correctly.

In American English we have a set of common words.

アメリカ英語には

And native speakers tend to pronounce them one way, and non-native speakers pronounce them another way.

ネイティヴならこう言うのにノンネイティヴはこう言うというような傾向がある単語がいくつかあります。

Today I’m going to tell you what those words are and how Americans pronounce them.

今日はそれがどんな単語か、アメリカ英語ではどのように発音するのかを説明していきます。

I’ve been teaching English for 20 years.

私はかれこれ20年間英語を教えてきました。

Yes, I’m that old.

と言うとだいたいの年齢がわかってしまいますね。

I see my students making mistakes like these almost every day.

実は生徒が必ずと言っていいほど 間違えている発音があるんです。

We’re going to start with an example, then we’ll go over the rules, and a whole bunch more examples.

まずは例を一つあげます。 それからルールと実際の例を見ていきましょう。

Ok, we’re going to start with this word.

まずはこの単語。

You might be thinking, wait, that’s a really easy word. There’s no way I’m mispronouncing that.

「こんな簡単な単語、絶対間違えない」 と思っているかもしれませんね。

You know what, let’s do a few more examples right here from the beginning.

もう少し例を見ていただくことにします。

This word, this word, and also this word.

これも、これも、それからこれも。

Look at all of these words. They have something in common. The mistake students make is the same.

よく見てみてください。これらの単語にはすべて共通点があり、生徒が間違えるのは同じ部分なのです。

All of these words have more than one pronunciation.

これらの単語にはすべて、 2通り以上の読み方があるのですが

Native speakers almost always do the short one.

ネイティヴはほぼ100%短い方の発音をするのに対し

And non-native speakers almost always do the long one. And that sounds less natural.

ノンネイティヴは必ず長く発音するので、 不自然に聞こえてしまうのです。

We have fam-ly, or family. In-tresing or in-ter-esting. Comf-table or com-for-table. Veg-table or veg-e-table.

2通りの読み方とはこんな感じです。

By doing the shorter pronunciation yourself,

短い方の読み方を実際に声に出して真似することで

you will sound more natural speaking English and also, good news, the shorter pronunciation is easier.

よりナチュラルなアメリカ英語の発音に近づくことができます。それに、短いバージョンの方が簡単です。

So it’s not fam-i-ly, but it’s fam-ly. Just two syllables. Family, family. Do you say it as three syllables?

fam-i-lyではなくfam-ly。2音節です。 あなたはいつも3音節で言っていませんか？

Fam-i-ly. Pronounce it with two. You’ll sound more natural. Let’s go hear 10 Americans saying this word.

2音節で言ってみましょう。もっと自然に聞こえます。 10人のネイティヴの実際の発音を聞いてください。

Family. Two syllables. Fam-ly. Family. Family. Say that with me.

Now, forget the sentences. Let’s just hear the word: family.

That's a lot of family.

You listen to it that many times, and you realize, wow this is what native speakers usually do.

何度も聞いていると気付きますよね。 ネイティヴはこういう風に言ってたんだ！と。

Family. Two syllables. Simple. Family.

2音節で言いましょう。簡単でしょう。

What about ‘vegetable’? Do you say it ‘veg-e-ta-ble’? I hear my students do that all the time.

ではこの単語はどうでしょう。 veg-e-ta-bleと4音節で言っていませんか？ 私の生徒はみんなそう言っています。

I’ve almost never heard a native speaker do that.

でも、ネイティヴがvege-ta-bleと言うのは 聞いたことがありません。

Veg-table. Not ve-ge-ta-ble.

Veg-table. 2音節です。ve-ge-ta-bleではなく。

Just three syllables with first syllable stress.

3音節で最初にストレス（アクセント）をおきます。

Vegetable.

Vegetable.

Alright, let’s go over to Youglish to see and hear lots of examples.

Youglishで実際の例をたくさん見てみましょう。

Vegetable. Three syllables. VEG-ta-ble. Vegetable. Say that with me.

3音節ですよ。最初を高く。一緒に言ってみましょう。

Vegetable.

Vegetable.

Now, again, let’s hear just the word, not the whole sentence.

文章は気にせず単語だけに集中して 聞いてくださいね。

You’ll really feel that three-syllable rhythm.

3音節のリズムを感じていただけると思います。

Vegetable.

Vegetable.

Three syllables, simple.

3音節にする。それだけです。

This word. I hear my students pronounce it ‘in-ter-est-ing’. In-ter-est-ing. Four syllables.

これはin-ter-est-ingと4音節で読む人が多い単語です。

Now, there are a couple of ways native speakers pronounce this word in American English,

ネイティヴの発音にも何通りかあるのですが

but the most common by far is: IN-chru-sting.

もっとも一般的なのはこんな感じです。

Interesting. So in doing this, they drop the vowel between T and R, so we now have a TR cluster.

TとRの間の母音を落として発音することにより TRが一つのかたまりができます。

This is often pronounced CHR, so that’s why you might hear a CH sound in this word.

CHRという発音になるので、スペルにもCHが 入っているように聞こえる人もいるかもしれません。

“Inchresting.”

こんな感じです。

Let’s go to Youglish and listen to Americans pronouncing this word.

Youglishで実際の例を見てみましょう。

“Inchrseting” or “interesting” –

このどちらかですね。

you might also hear a True T instead of a CH, though CH is more common.

Tの音がしっかり聞こえる場合もあれば、 CHが聞こえる場合も。でも、CHの方が一般的です。

Interesting or interesting.

Now, occasionally, you’ll hear a native speaker make this four syllables.

ごくまれにですが ネイティヴが4音節で言うこともあります。

And in that case, there’s a good chance you’re not going to hear that T at all.

その場合は今度、Tの音がまったく聞こえない という現象がおきます。

“Inneresting”. It’s common to drop a T after N, so that’s what happens here.

NのあとのTは音が脱落するという現象です。

I noticed Rick Steves doing this as I was listening to examples.

Rick Steveがこの発音をしていました。

But what I want you to take away from this, is just go with the most common pronunciation.

でも今日はもっとも一般的な発音に 慣れていただきたいと思っています。

Change your habit. Not ‘in-ter-est-ing’ but ‘inchresting’.

今日からはinchrestingと読んでみましょう。

Interesting.

Let’s listen to just this word many times.

この単語だけ何度も繰り返し聞いてみましょう。

Say that with me, interesting.

一緒に言ってみましょう。

Interesting.

Ok, comfortable.

次はこの単語です。

I hear my students say “com-for-ta-ble”, four syllables. How to do native speakers say it?

たくさんの生徒がこれを4音節で読みますが、 ネイティヴはどうでしょう。

COMF-der-ble. Three syllables. First syllable stress.

3音節です。ストレスは最初にきます。

COMF-der-ble.

You might hear the T as a D, COMF-der-ble. Or you might hear it as a T. COMF-ter-ble.

TはDに近い音に聞こえる場合と そのままTに聞こえる場合があります。

Both are common, D is probably more common.

どちらも一般的ですが、Dの方がより一般的です。

Every once in a while, you’ll hear a native speaker pronounce this as four syllables, but not often.

ネイティヴが4音節で読むこともなくはないですが、 あまり多くはないと思います。

Simplify it. Three syllables. Comfortable. Let’s listen to just the word many times.

3音節の方がずっと簡単です。 単語だけ繰り返し聞いてみましょう。

Say that with me, comfortable, comfortable.

Ok, so how are you supposed to know in which words you can drop a syllable?

1音節落としていいかどうか どうやったらわかるのかという問題ですが

Is it CHOC-o-late, or do most Americans say ‘choc-late?’

例えばこの単語。 ネイティヴならどっちの読み方をしていますか？

Okay, so it's two syllables. Choc-late.

2音節ですよね。

Well, is it FAV-o-rit of ‘fav-rit’?

これはどうでしょう。

Okay, so it's two syllables.

2音節です。

FAV-rit.

There isn’t an absolute rule, because there are so few absolute rules in American English pronunciation.

絶対的なルールはないのですが……。 というのもアメリカ英語の発音自体が ルールがほとんどないので。

But there are some guidelines that can help you know when to drop a syllable.

でもいくつかの基準はありますのでご紹介します。

When we drop a sound or a syllable like this, it’s called ‘syncope’. The example given here in this is ‘probably’.

音、もしくは音節を落とすことをsyncopeと言います。 Probablyの発音なんかはその一例です。

This word is often pronounced ‘PROB-li’, two syllables, prob-ly.

2音節でprob-lyと言ってしまうことが多いのです。

I do have a video specifically on that word, i'll link to it in the video description.

この単語だけに特化したビデオもありますので 概要欄に記載しておきます。

But, that doesn’t actually follow the ‘rule’, as I said, it’s not a perfect rule. It’s more of a guideline.

でもこれもルールではなく、 あくまでも基準です。

And the guideline is:

その基準とは

an unstressed vowel might be dropped if the next sound is R, L, or a nasal consonant M, N, NG.

ストレスのかからない母音が R、L、または鼻音の子音M、N、NGと隣接する際は 音が脱落することがある。

Let’s look at the words we already studied.

すでに勉強した単語を例に見てみましょう。

FAMILY – that was an unstressed vowel followed by M. It does follow that guideline.

ストレスのかからない母音のあとにL （Mと言っていますが間違いです）。

Vegetable – hmm.

これはどうでしょう。

Here, the dropped vowel wasn’t followed by R, L,

脱落した母音のうしろはRでもLでもありません。

or a nasal consonant so that one doesn't follow the guidelines.

鼻音でもないですね。 これは基準には従っていないことになります。

Interesting – that one does.

この単語は当てはまります。

The unstressed vowel was followed by R.

ストレスのかからない母音のうしろがR。

Comfortable – also followed by R.

こちらもR。

Favorite – followed by R.

これもRですね。

Chocolate, followed by L.

これはL。

Does follow the guideline.

基準に沿っています。

Now I’m going to go over a few more common words here that have two different pronunciations,

2通りの読み方がある単語をもう少しご紹介します。

with one being shortened and that one more common.

短縮バージョンの方が一般的だという例です。

We won’t go look them up on Youglish, but I invite you to do that.

Youglishでも実際の発音を確認してみてください。

It’s a great way to do research on how Americans actually pronounce different words and phrases.

アメリカ人が実際にどんな風に単語や文章を発音をしているのかを知るのに大変役立ちます。

Different.

Two syllables. Not diff-er-ent, but diff-rent.

2音節です。3音節ではなく。

Say that with me. Diff-rent.

一緒に発音してみましょう。

Cam-er-a should be cam-ra.

これも3音節ではなく2音節。

Say that with me. Cam-ra.

声に出して言ってみましょう。

Cath-o-lic. We say that: Cath-lic. Two syllables.

私たちがこれを読むときは2音節です。

Say that with me. Cath-lic.

言ってみましょう。

Int-er-est. Again, we say this as two syllables: in-trest.

これは2音節。

This is just like shortening ‘interesting’.

interestingを短くしたような感じでいいですよ。

In-trest. Say that with me. IN-trest.

言ってみましょう。

Listening is often ‘lis-ning’. Lis-ning.

これは2音節。

Say that with me. Lis-ning.

言ってみましょう。

Notice the T is silent there.

Tは聞こえないのがわかりますか？

That’s not part of the syncope,

この部分はsyncopeではなく

that’s just the pronunciation, even in the full pronunciation of the word, that's silent.

もともとこのTは発音しません。

Mem-o-ry is often ‘mem-ry’.

これは3音節ではなく2音節。

Mem-ry.

Say that with me. Mem-ry.

言ってみましょう。

Trav-el-ing is often ‘trav-ling’.

Two syllables.

2音節です。

Say that with me. Trav-ling.

言ってみましょう。

Natural is often ‘NAT-rul’.

これも2音節で一気に言います。

Just Two syllables.

Try that with me. NAT-rul.

言ってみましょう。

Actually is often pronounced AK-shul-ly, three syllables instead of four.

Actuallyは3音節になります。4音節ではなく。

AK-shul-ly.

Rest-au-rant is often ‘rest-rant.’ Two syllables.

Restaurantは2音節。

And sometimes, you’ll hear a CH because of that TR cluster: res-chront, res-chront.

しばしばCHの音が聞こえることがありますが、 TRをまとめて言うとそう聞こえます。

Try that with me. Restaurant.

SEP-uh-rit is often SEP-rit. Two syllables.

これも2音節です。

Say that with me. Separate.

SEV-er-al is often SEV-ral.

これも2音節です。

Say that with me. Several.

TEMP-er-uh-ture is often TEM-pruh-chur. Temperature. Say that with me. Temperature.

これは3音節でこんな風に言います。 私と一緒に言ってみましょう。

Now here’s a word that isn’t a syncope, but it’s a word that’s often mispronounced by non-native speakers

次の単語はsyncopeではないのですが ノンネイティヴがよく間違える発音の一つです。

because they put an extra syllable in it: business.

本来ない母音を入れて読んでしまう人が多い。

It looks like it should have an extra syllable, BIZ-ih-ness. But that’s not the actual pronunciation.

間にIを入れたくなるところですが それは正しい発音ではありません。

That is a two-syllable word.

これはもともとが2音節の単語です。

Business.

Business.

Both syllables have the IH vowel even though one is spelled with the letter U

前半と後半、どちらも同じIHという母音です。 片方はスペルがUで

and the other is spelled with the letter E.

もう片方はEと書くのですが。

BIZ-ness. Say that with me. Business.

発音はこうです。言ってみましょう。

This is true of ‘every’ as well. The actual pronunciation isn’t three syllables.

Everyも同じです。実際の発音は3音節にはなりません。

That’s not what you’ll see in a dictionary.

辞書に書いてあるわけでもないのに……

But I do hear my students do that sometimes.

なぜかそう読む生徒は多いです。

The pronunciation is two syllables: EV-ry. Every.

2音節が正しい発音です。

Try that with me. Every.

Ok, now the guidelines that I gave you.

音節の脱落の基準ですが

Remember that some of the syncopes we studied didn’t follow these guidelines.

基準に沿っていないものもありましたよね。

Well, there are a lot words that have an unstressed vowel

ストレスのかかる母音が

followed by one of these3 consonants where we don’t drop it.

先にご紹介したような子音に続く場合でも 脱落しないケースもあります。

That’s why I didn’t really want to call that a ‘rule’.

だから「ルール」とは呼びたくなかったのです。

For example, someone asked me about the word ‘lottery’.

Lotteryという単語はどうなのか と訊かれたことがあります。

There’s an unstressed vowel, the schwa, followed by the R.

ストレスのかからない母音（シュワ） のあとにRですよね。

But we wouldn’t drop the syllable, turning it a two-syllable word: Lot-ry.

でもこれは2音節にはならないのです。

This is still a 3-syllable word: lottery, lottery.

3音節のまま発音します。

So this is something you have to learn as you go.

これはもう慣れるしかありません。

As you learn new words, as you notice how Americans pronounce things.

新しい単語を覚えながら、 ネイティヴの発音を聞きながら。

If you’re ever not sure, go to Youglish and hear 25 different people pronouncing the word.

迷ったときはYouglishで25人のネイティヴが 発音するのを聞いてみましょう。

They might not all be exactly the same, but you can see which pronunciation is the most common.
