What’s the best way to start your description?

ماهي الطريقة الأفضل للبدء بوصفك؟

Start with a summary, giving a general description of what’s in the picture and what you can

ابدأ بموجز.. مُعطياً وصفاً عاماً لما في الصورة ولما يمكنك

see.

It’s useful to imagine that the person you’re talking to can’t see the picture.

من المفيد أن تتخيّل أن الشخص الذي تكلّمه لا يمكنه رؤية الصورة

Think: what does the other person need to know?

فكّر ..ما الشيء الذي يحتاج الشخص الآخر أن يعرفه؟!

What do you need to say so that other people can understand what’s in the picture?

ماذا تحتاج لتقوله حتى يتمكّن بقية الناس من فهم مافي الصورة؟

Let’s do an example.

لنقم بمثال على ذلك

You want to summarize what you see in one or two simple sentences.

تريد أن توجز ماتراه في جملةٍ أو اثنتين

How could you do that?

How could you do that? كيف سيمكنك فعل ذلك؟

You could say:

يمكنك القول

There are several small boats next to a beach.

هنالك عدة قوارب صغيرة بالقرب من الشاطئ

Or, The picture shows a beach, with many small

أو؛ تعرض الصورة شاطئاً مع عدة قوارب صغيرة

boats in the water nearby.

في الماء بالجوار

Simple summaries like this make it easy to understand the general contents of the picture.

المختصرات البسيطة كهذه تجعل من السهل أن تفهم المحتوى العام للصورة

Let’s do one more: What could you say here?

لنقم بواحدة أخرى ماذا الذي يمكنك ان تراه هنا؟

Here are some possible answers:

هنا يوجد بعض الإجابات المحتملة:

There are three people cooking in a kitchen.

هنالك ثلاثة أشخاص يطهون في المطبخ

Or, The picture shows three young friends cooking

أو؛ هذه الصورة تعرض لنا ثلاثة أصدقاء شباب يطهون

together.

Okay, now it’s your turn.

Here’s another picture: You need to make a summary of what you see.

You can use these phrases:

There is… or, There are…

هناك..(بالمفرد) أو؛ هناك (بالجمع)

The picture shows…

Pause the video, and make one or two sentences.

أوقف الفيديو ؛ وقم بإنشاء جملة أو اثنتين

You can write down your answers if you want.

يمكنك تدوين إجاباتك إذا أردت

Okay, after your summary, you can start giving more detail about what you see in the picture.

حسناً؛ بعد إنشائك لموجز الوصف .. يمكنك البدء بإعطاء تفاصيل أكثر عما يمكنك أن تراه في الصورة

To start giving detail, you can talk about where things are in the picture.

للبدء بإعطاء تفاصيل ؛ يمكنك التحدث عن مكان الأشياء في الصورة

Here’s some useful language to help you do this:

وهذه بعض المفردات المفيدة لمساعدتك على القيام بذلك

Let’s do an example.

لنقم بمثال ما

You could say:

يمكنك القول:

On the left, there’s a girl with dark, curly hair.

على اليسار؛ هنالك فتاة ذات شعر أسود ومجعد

She’s holding half a cauliflower.

She’s holding half a cauliflower. وهي تمسك بنصف قطعة من القرنبيط

In the middle, there’s a man who’s chopping vegetables.

في الوسط.. هنالك رجل يقطّع الخضراوات

At the bottom, we can see a counter with many different vegetables on it.

في الأسفل...يمكننا رؤية منضدة مع العديد من الخضراوات عليها.

When talking about photos, you might also need the phrases:

عند الشرح عن الصور ..لربما تحتاج أيضاً الجُمل التالية:

In the background…

في الخلفية

In the foreground…

في المقدمة...

For example: In the foreground, there’s a sandy beach

على سبيل المثال: في المقدمة ؛ هنالك شاطىء رملي

with three metal anchors on it.

مع ثلاث مراسٍ معدنية عليه

In the middle, there are several small boats, which are close to the beach.

في الوسط؛ هنالك عدة قوارب وهي قريبة من الشاطئ

In the background, we can see the blue sea stretching to the horizon.

في الخلفية ... يمكننا رؤية البحر الأزرق ممتد في الأفق

Let’s put all of this language together in another example:

لنضع كل هذه المفردات معاً في مثال آخر

Think first: what could you say about this picture?

فكّر أوّلاً : ماالذي تستطيع قوله حول الصورة؟

Okay, let’s look at what you could say:

حسناً لنلق نظرة على مايمكنك قوله:

On the left, there’s a cat sitting on a table.

على اليسار ؛ هنالك قطة جالسة على الطاولة

On the right, there’s a man standing, though we can’t see his face.

على اليمين ؛ هنالك رجلٌ واقف بالرغم من أنه لايمكننا رؤية وجهه

In the background, we can see blue sky and snowy mountains.

في الخلفية ؛ يمكننا رؤية السماء الزرقاء والجبال بقمم ثلجية

Now it’s your turn!

Pause the video, and make at least three sentences.

Use the useful language you saw in this section.

Now, the person you’re talking to should have a good general idea about what’s in

Next, you should start describing your picture in more detail.

Let’s look at a picture you’ve seen before: When adding detail, don’t try to describe

everything in the picture.

It’s not necessary or useful.

فهذا غير ضروري أو مفيد.

You should add details to the most important parts of the picture.

So, for this picture, what do you think the most important parts are?

إذاً ؛ في هذه الصورة..ما هي الأجزاء التي تظنّها الأكثر أهمية ؟

Probably, the person who took this photo took it because of the people.

من المحتمل أن الشخص الذي التقط الصورة قد التقطها بسبب هؤلاء الأشخاص

So, you should focus your description on the two people.

عندها سيكون عليك التركيز في وصفك لهذين الشخصين أيضاً

Think: what do they look like, and what are they doing?

فكر : كيف يظهرون؟ وماالذي يفعلونه؟

You could say:

يمكنك القول:

The two people both look unhappy or irritated.

كلا الشخصين يبدوان حزينين أو منزعجَين

They’re sitting at the kitchen table together, but they aren’t talking to each other.

وهما جالسان معاً عند طاولة المطبخ ولكنهما لا يتحدثان إلى بعضهما

The man is staring down at the table, while the woman is stirring her tea with a spoon.

الرجل يحدق للأسفل من الطاولة... بينما المرأة تحرّك الشاي بملعقة

That’s just three sentences, but they add a lot of detail to your description.

تلك فقط ثلاث جمل. لكنها أضافت الكثير من التفاصيل لوصفك

Let’s try one more: In this picture, what do you think you should

لنحاول مرة أخرى: في هذه الصورة ؛ ما الذي تظن

focus on in your description?

أنه عليك التركيز فيه في وصفك

Fairly obviously, you should talk about the horses.

بوضوح تام.. يجب أن نتحدث عن الأحصنة..

Let’s try:

لنحاول

The horses are running through the grass.

الأحصنة تركض على العشب

Two of them are black, but the one in the middle is white and grey.

اثنان منهم أسود اللون... ولكن الأوسط لونه أبيض ورمادي

They don’t have saddles or anything, so they could be wild horses.

وهي لا تملك أسرجة أو أي شيء لذا فهي يمكن أن تكون أحصنة برية

Again, you can see that you can do a lot with just a few sentences.

مجدداً ؛ يمكنك أن ترى أنه يمكن القيام بالكثير مع القليل فقط من العبارات

Alright, now it’s your turn!

Let’s take a picture you’ve already seen: Pause the video and make at least three sentences

لنأخذ صورة قد رأيتها مسبقاً: أوقف الفيديو وكوّن على الأقل ثلاث عبارات

to describe the picture in detail.

Try to include as much information as you can.

حاول أن تتضمن العبارات على معلومات بقدر الإمكان

At this point, you’ve described the picture in detail.

So, what else can you do?

Speculating…

التخمين...

What does that mean?

ما الذي يعنيه ذلك؟

Speculating means talking about possibilities.

التخمين يعني التحدّث غن الاحتمالات

For example, look at this picture: Think about some questions:

على سبيل المثال.. انظر لهذه الصورة : فكر ببعض الاسئلة

Why are the umbrellas there?

لماذا هذه المظلات هناك؟

Who put them there?

من وضعهم هناك؟

By trying to answer questions like this, you are speculating; you’re talking about possibilities

بمحاولتك للإجابة عن أسئلة كهذه فأنت تخمًن؛ فأنت تتكلّم عن الأشياء المحتملة.

and giving your opinion about the picture.

وتعطي رأيك حول الصورة

Speculating can help you to make a longer, more detailed answer when talking about a

التخمين يساعدك على إعطاء إجابات طويلة وأكثر تفصيلاً عند الحديث عن

picture.

Let’s do an example:

لنقم بمثال

I suppose it might be some kind of art project.

أفترض أنه لربما يكون مشروع فني إلى حد ما

Maybe one person put an umbrella up there as a joke, and then other people started doing

ربما شخص واحد وضع مظلّة هناك كمزحة... ومن ثمّ فالآخرون بدؤوا بالقيام

it, too.

Let’s look at one more picture:

لننظر إلى صورة أخرى

Think, if you wanted to speculate about this picture, what could you say?

فكر؛ إذا أردت أن تخمن عن الصورة... ماالذي يمكنك قوله؟

Another way to think about it: what questions could you ask yourself about this picture?

طريقة أخرى للتفكير بها : ما هي الاسئلة التي تراودك أو تسأل نفسك عنها؟

Possible ideas are: who made the footprints, and why?

أفكار محتملة: من الذي ترك آثار الأقدام؟ ولماذا؟

Where were they going?

أين هم ذاهبون؟

Where is the person who made the footprints now?

أين هو الشخص الذي ترك آثار أقدامه الآن؟

There are other possibilities, of course, so feel free to use your own ideas, too!

هنالك احتمالات أخرى بالطبع .. لذا أشعر بمطلق الحرية باستخدام أفكارك الخاصة أيضاً

Okay, so what could you say to speculate about this picture?

حسناً.. ماالذي يمكنك قوله للتخمين حول هذه الصورة؟

Here are some examples:

هاهي بعض الأمثلة:

The footprints must have been made by a climber or a mountaineer.

بصمات الأقدام يجب أن تكون قد تُرِكت من قبل متسلق جبال

The person who made the footprints might be standing on top of the mountain now.

ربما الشخص الذي قد ترك بصمات أقدامه يكون الآن واقفاً على قمة جبل.

In our examples, you’ve seen some useful language which you can use to speculate about

في أمثلتنا .. قد رأيت بعض أساليب اللغة المفيدة والتي يمكنك استخدامها للتخمين عن

a picture.

You can use language like:

Let’s practise using these once more with another picture:

لنتمرّن على استخدام هذه المفرادت مرة أخرى مع صورة أخرى

Could you make four sentences, using the useful language we just saw?

هل يمكنك تكوين أربع جمل مستخدماً أسلوب االلغة المفيد الذي رأيته للتوّ؟

Let’s do an example together:

لنقم بمثالٍ معاً:

I suppose the guy is a climber, or he’s on an adventure holiday.

أنا أفترض أن الرجل هو متسلق جبال ؛ أو هو في عطلة للمغامرات

Maybe he climbed something, and now he’s on the way down.

لربما هو قد تسلّق شيئاً.. وهو الآن في طريقه للأسفل

He must have a lot of experience, because his body language is quite relaxed.

يجب أن يكون لديه الكثير من الخبرة لأن لغة جسده تخبرنا أنه مسترخٍ تماماً

He might be focusing on what he’s doing, but he might just be enjoying the view!

ربما يُركّز على مايفعله ؛ لكن ربما قد يكون يستمتع فقط بالمشهد

Can you make four sentences to speculate about this picture, using the language you’ve

Now, you have one more thing to do.

When you speculate, you can speculate about what you can see in the picture.

عندما تُخمّن .. يمكنك التخمين حول ماتراه في الصورة

However, you can—and you should—speculate about what you can’t see, too.

ومع ذلك.. يمكنك _ وينبغي عليك_ التخمين عمّا لاتراه أيضاً..

How’s this possible?

كيف من الممكن ذلك؟

Well, think about this picture: You can think about questions like: where

حسناً ..فكر حول هذه الصورة : يمكنك التفكير بأسئلة مثل : أين

and when was the picture taken?

ومتى أُخِذت الصورة؟

Who took the picture?

من أخذ الصورة؟

What was the photographer doing there?

ماذا كان يفعل المصوّر هناك؟

For example:

على سبيل المثال:

I think this could be in the USA, or maybe Russia.

أظن أنها أُخذت في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.. أو في روسيا

It’s a good photo, so perhaps it was taken by a professional nature photographer.

إنّها صورةٌ جيدة ؛ لذا ربما التُقِطَت من قبل مصور للطبيعة محترف

You see?

Talking about what you can’t see in the picture can be very useful, and can help to

الحديث عمّا لا يمكنك أن تراه في الصورة يمكن أن يكون مفيداً جداً.. وقد يساعدك على

add details to your answer.

Let’s do one more example: What could you say about this picture?

Let’s do this one together.

You could say:

يمكنك القول

This must be somewhere tropical, like the Caribbean or the Maldives.

هذه الصورة يجب أن تكون في مكانٍ ما مداري المناخ كمنطقة الكاريبي أو المالديفز.

Perhaps it was taken by a tourist who came to the beach on one of those boats.

لربما قد التُقِطَت من قبل سائح قَدِمَ للشاطئ على متن إحدى تلك القوارب.

Okay, one more.

This time, you have to do it yourself!

Here’s your picture: Make at least two sentences to speculate about

the context of the picture.

Think about where and when it was taken, who took it, and what the photographer was doing

فكر أين ومتى التُقِطَت .. من التقطتها وماذا كان يفعل المصوّر

there.

When you describe a picture, you should:

عندما تصف صورة ينبغي عليك:

Give a summary of what you see.

إعطاء موجز وصف لما تراه

Talk about where things are in the picture.

التحدّث عن مكان توضّع الأشياء في الصورة

Add details.

إضافة تفاصيل

Speculate about what’s in the picture.

التخمين عمّا يوجد في الصورة

And, Speculate about the context of the picture.

وتخمين سياق الصورة

Let’s make a longer answer together.

لنقم بتكوين إجابة أطول معاً

We’ll start with a picture we’ve used already:

سنبدأ بصورة قد رأيتها للتو

Here’s a possible longer answer:

وهذه إجابة طويلة ممكنة:

In the picture, there are two people sitting at a table, looking unhappy.

في الصورة ؛ هنالك شخصان يجلسان عند الطاولة يبدوان حزينين

There’s a woman on the left and a man on the right.

المرأة على اليسار والرجل على اليمين

In the middle of the picture, we can see some things on the table, like cups of tea, biscuits,

في وسط الصورة: يمكننا أن نرى أشياء على الصورة .. كأكواب الشاي والبسكويت

milk and so on.

والحليب وما إلى ذلك.

The two people look sad or irritated, and they aren’t speaking to each other.

The two people loشخصان يبدوان حزينين أو منزعجين .. ولا يتحدثان لبعضهما

They’re both looking down at the table.

كلاهما ينظران للأسفل..إلى الطاولة

I suppose they had a fight and now they aren’t talking to each other, or they might just

أظن أنهما تشاجرا ولا يتحدّثان لبعضهما أو ربّما

be bored and not have anything to talk about.

يشعران بالملل .. وليس لديهما أي شيء ليتحدثا عنه

I guess it’s a stock photo because otherwise, why would the photographer be in the kitchen

أظن أنّها صورة رديئة لأنه ومن ناحية أخرى؛ لماذا يودّ مصوّر أن يتواجد في المطبخ

with them?

معهم؟

Do you think you could make an answer like this?

هل تظنّ أنه يمكنك أن تجد إجابة لشيء كهذا؟

Remember, all the language you need is in this lesson.

You just need to take the things you practised in each part, and then put them together.

أنت فقط تحتاج لأن تأخذ الأشياء التي تدربت عليها بكل جزءٍ منها؛ وتجمعها مع بعضها

Let’s do one more example together:

The picture shows umbrellas hanging in the air.

الصورة تُظهِر مظلّات معلّقة في الهواء

In the foreground, we can see a streetlight, and the umbrellas fill the picture from left

في المقدّمة ؛ يمكننا أن نرى ضوء شارع.. والمظلّات تملأ الصورة من اليسار

to right.

إلى اليمين

The umbrellas are of many different colours, mostly bright colours like pink, yellow or

green.

They’re hanging from wires.

I can see at least four lines of umbrellas hanging down in this way, but there could

be even more.

Maybe this is some sort of art project.

It might also be a festival or tradition, that people decorate the street with colourful

umbrellas like this.

I suppose the picture was taken in a city or town, though I can’t tell where exactly.

أفترض أن الصورة التُقِطت في مدينة أو بلدة ..وبالرغم من ذلك لا يمكنني أن أخبر أين هي بالضبط

Perhaps the photographer was a tourist, and was just walking around the city when he saw

ربما المصوّر كان سائحاً و كان يتجوّل حول المدينة عندما رأى

this amazing and strange scene.

Alright, now it’s your turn.

We’ll give you a new picture:
