You’ll learn useful English words and phrases to talk about common money topics such as your

سوف تتعلم كلمات وجمل إنجليزية مفيدة تمكنك من التحدث عن مواضيع المال الشائعة مثل

spending habits, salary, borrowing money, and more.

But wait, is it okay to talk about money?

لكن أنتظر, عادى إنك تتكلم عن المال ؟

Maybe you heard someone say that it can be rude to talk about money in the UK or in the

Sometimes it’s not appropriate.

For example, it’s generally not acceptable to ask someone how much they earn.

However, people talk about money all the time; in this lesson you’ll see how to talk about

You’re going on holiday again?!

How can you afford it?

كيف قادر تتحملها ؟

I can barely pay my rent each month.

أنا بالكاد أستطيع دفع اجارى كل شهر.

Well, I’ve been saving up for it.

حسنا لقد كنت أدخر المال من أجلها

How do you do it?

كيف تقوم بذلك ؟

I make a budget for each week, so I decide how much I can spend, and what I can spend

أنا بعمل ميزانية كل أسبوع , لذلك أنا بقرر كام ممكن أنفقه وماهى الاشياء التى يمكننى أنفاق

money on.

المال فيها

That way, I know how much I’ll save.

بهذه الطريقة, أنا بعرف مقدار اللى ممكن أدخره

But how does it work?

لكن كيف يعمل هذا ؟

I’m pretty careful with my money, but I find it really difficult to save much.

أنا حريص جدا مع مالى, لكنى أجد صعوبة كبيرة فى أدخار المال

It’s the little expenses that add up.

إنها النفقات الصغيرة التى تضاف

You buy a bottle of water here, a sandwich there, a takeaway pizza in the evening…

أنت تشترى زجاجة ماء هنا وسندودش هناك وبيتزا جاهزة فى المساء

They don’t cost much, but over time you end up spending more than you realise.

مش بيكفوا كتير .لكن مع الوقت تجد أنك أنفقت أكتر مما تتوقع

I guess you’re right.

أظن أنك محق

But, how do you stick to it?

لكن كيف تلتزم بذلك ؟

Don’t you just want to have a takeaway pizza once in a while?

ألا تريد الحصول على بيتزا جاهزة من حين لأخر ؟؟

Ask yourself: which would you rather have?

أسأل نفسك : ما الذى تفضله ؟

Most people waste a lot of money on things they don’t really want.

أغلب الناس بيضيعوا كثير من المال فى أشياء هما لا يريدوها حقا

I really love travelling, so I’m happy to cut back on some less important things so

أنا حقا أحب السفر ولذلك انا سعيد إنى اقلل بعض الاشياء الاقل اهمية حيث

that I can pay for it.

استطيع دفع تكاليف السفر

You’re right, but I don’t think I could be that frugal.

أنت محق ولكن انا لا اظن انى يمكننى ان اكون مقتصدا

I’m not a big spender or anything, but I really enjoy splashing out and treating myself

انا مش مبزر كبير ولا حاجة ولكن انا بستمتع حقا بتناول الطعام خارجا و إمتاع نفسى

occasionally.

بين الحين والأخر

Here’s a question: can you name three things you can do with money?

إليك سؤال : هل تستطيع ذكر 3 أشياء تستطيع فعلهم بالمال؟

You heard a lot of useful phrases in the dialogue.

أنت سمعت كثير من الجمل المفيدة فى الحوار

Of course, you can spend money.

بالتأكيد تستطيع إنفاق المال

You can also save money or waste money.

وتقدر تدخره أو تضيعه

You spend money on something.

أنت تنفق المال فى حاجة

For example:

على سبيل المثال

I don’t spend much on food.

أنا مش بنفق كثير على الطعام

He spends a lot of money on gadgets and technology.

هو ينفق كثيرا من المال على الادوات والتكنولوجيا

How much do you spend on rent every month?

كم مقدار المال الذى تنفقه كل شهر على الايجار

You can use waste money in the same way:

تقدر تستخدم تبزير المال بنفس الطريقة

They waste a lot of money on things they don’t need.

هم يضيعون الكثير من المال على اشياء ليسوا بحاجة اليها

Someone who spends a lot is a big spender.

الشخص اللى يصرف كثيرا يسمى منفق كبير

The opposite?

فى المقابل ؟

Someone who spends very little money is frugal.

الشخص الذى ينفق القليل جدا من المال يسمى مقتصد

These words are neutral; they don’t have positive or negative associations.

هذه الكلمات محايدة .. ليس لديها جانب سلبى او ايجابى

What about save money?

ماذا عن ادخار المال ؟

You can save for something, or you can save to do something.

ممكن تتدخر لشىء او تدخر لفعل شىء

Often, instead of saying save money, you can use the phrasal verb save up, which has the

عادة بدلا من استخدام جملة حفظ المال (save money) يمكن ان تستخدم الفعل (save up)والذى لديه

same meaning.

نفس المعنى

For example:

على سبيل المثال :

I’m saving up for a holiday next year.

انا ادخر لعطلة العام المقبل.

We’re saving up to buy a car.

نحن ندخر لشراء سيارة.

In order to save money, you can make a budget: you make a spending plan, and write down everything

لكى تدخر المال , تستطيع عمل ميزانية : تقوم بصنع خطة انفاق وتدون كل شىء

you spend so that you stick to your plan.

انت تنفقه حتى تلتزم بخطتك

If you’re saving for something, you might need to cut back on other things, meaning

لو انت تدخر المال لشىء, فأنت ربما تحتاج الى التخلى عن بعض الاشياء , بمعنى

that you spend less than usual.

تنفق اقل من العادة

On the other hand, some people aren’t so good at saving.

من ناحية اخرى, بعض الناس ليسوا جيدين فى الادخار

Some people like to splash out; they spend money on things they enjoy.

بعض الناس يحبون انفاق المال بحرية ; هم ينفقون المال على الاشياء التى يستمتعون بها

You can also treat yourself, by spending more money than you usually would in order to do

يمكنك الترفيه عن نفسك بصرف الكثير من المال اكثر مما تفعل عادة من اجل القيام

something nice for yourself.

بشىء لطيف لنفسك

So, I’m thinking of moving to London.

انا افكر فى الانتقال الى لندن

I got a job offer, but I’m not sure about the salary.

تلقيت عرض عمل ولكن انا مش متأكدة من المرتب.

It sounds good, but I’ve heard London is expensive, so I’m not sure.

يبدوا جيدا ولكن قد سمعت ان الايقامة فى لندن مكلفة, لذلك لست متأكدة.

I guess it depends on your lifestyle, but you definitely need more than in other places.

اظن هذا يعتمد على أسلوب حياتك , ولكن أنت بالتأكيد تحتاجين الى اكثر من امكان اخرى.

My friends who live in London all make decent money, but they don’t have much left over

كل اصدقائى الذين يعيشون فى لندن يجنون مال لائق ولكن لا يستطيعون ترك شىء منه

at the end of the month.

فى نهاية الشهر.

Mostly, they’re just getting by.

فى الغالب هم فقط يقبضونه.

They offered me 25k.

هم عرضوا على 25 الف .

That would be okay in most places I’ve lived, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to make

هذا هيكون كويس بالنسبة لاغلب الاماكن اللى عشت فيها ولكن مش متأكدة انه هيكون نفس الشىء مع

ends meet in London.

It’ll be challenging!

هيكون الامر صعب!

That’s on the low side, for sure.

على هذا النحو المنخفض بالتأكيد

Put it this way: I know someone who makes around 45k, and she says she struggles in

بنفس الطريقة: اعرف شخص يقبضحوالى 45 الف ,وتقول انها تكافح فى

London.

لندن

Anywhere else, you’d be very well-off making that sort of money.

فى اى مكان اخر سيكون من الجيد صنع هذا النوع من المال.

Hmm…

I guess I’ll look for something better.

اظن هنتظر شىء افضل.

In most English-speaking countries, people talk about annual salaries: the amount you

فى اغلب الدول المتحدثة بالانجليزى ,الناس يتحدثون بالراتب الثانوى : المقدار الذى

make each year.

تتحصل عليه كل سنة.

Also, it’s normal to talk about the amount before tax.

ايضا ,من العادى التحدث عن مقدر المال قبل الضريبة.

For example, ‘25k’ in the dialogue means 25,000 pounds per year before tax.

على سبيل المثال : (25ك) التى الحوار تعنى 25 الف جنيه فى العام قبل خصم الضريبة.

In case you’re wondering, the average salary in London is around 29,000 pounds per year,

فى حالة أنك تتسائل, متوسط الراتب فى لندن حوالى 29 الف جنيه فى السنة

while the average cost of living for a family of four is around 4,000 pounds per month,

بينما متوسط نفقات المعيشة لعائلة من 4 افراد حوالى 4 الف جنيه فى الشهر,

assuming a comfortable but fairly basic lifestyle.

بافتراض نمط حياة مريح ولكن اساسى (دون ترف)

If your salary is higher than average, you can say you make good money or make decent

اذا كان راتبك اكبر من المتوسط ..ممكن تقول انك بتربح جيدا او تربح

money.

مال لائق.

In this case, you’ll probably be well-off: not rich, but with enough money to have a

فى هذه الحالة, ربحك جيد ولكن لست غنى, فقط تمتلك المال الذى يسمح لك

nice lifestyle and not worry about money.

بعيش حياة طيبة دون القلق حول المال.

On the other hand, if you only just make enough to cover your costs, you can say you’re

من ناحية اخرى, لوانت تربح مال يمكنك فى تغطية نفقاتك فقط ..ممكن تقول انك

just getting by.

على قد الحال.

This means that you have enough money to live, but not much more.

هذا معناه : انك تمتلك المال الذى يكفى لتعيش بيه فقط دون الادخار.

If you say, I’m just getting by, it suggests you don’t have a lot of extra money to spend

اذا قولت,انا على قد الحال,هذا يعنى انك ليس لديك مال فائض لتنفقه

on eating in restaurants, going out, travelling, and so on.

على الاكل فى المطاعم والخروج والسفر, الخ

For example:

على سبيل المثال:

I don’t earn a lot, but I get by.

انا لا أكسب كثير ولكن احصل على ما يكفينى.

--> Meaning: I make enough to pay all my bills, but I don’t have much spare money.

المعنى : اربح ما يكفى لسداد فواتيرى ولكن ليس لدى الكثير من المال الفائض.

If someone doesn’t even make enough to cover their basic expenses, like rent, bills, food

اذا الشخص لا يربح الذى يغطى النفقات الاساسية مثل الايجار و الفواتير والطعام

and transport, then they are struggling.

والمواصلات ,حينها هم يكافحون بشق الانفس.

You can also use the phrase make ends meet, which you heard in the dialogue.

يمكنك استخدام جملة (تفى بالغرض) التى سمعتها فى الحوار.

Do you know what it means?

هل تعلم ماذا تعنى ؟

Make ends meet means to cover all of your expenses.

تفى بالغرض تعنى انها تغطى كافة نفقاتك.

Let’s see some examples:

هيا بنا نرى مثال أخر:

I can barely make ends meet.

انا بالكاد اغطى نفقاتى.

He’s struggling to make ends meet.

هو يكافح ليغطى النفقات.

I don’t know how we’d make ends meet if we had another child.

انا لا اعرف كيف سنتعامل مع الاطفال لو كان لدينا طفل اخر.

If you say that someone can barely make ends meet, you mean that they don’t earn much

اذا قولت ان شخص ما بالكاد( يفى بالغرض) .. فأنت تقصد ان هذا الشخص لا يكسب الكثير من

money, and so it’s difficult for them to pay all their bills and cover their regular

المال و لذلك من الصعب عليه تغطية جميع فواتيره ونفقاته العادية.

expenses.

What salary do you need to make to get by where you live?

ما المرتب الذى تحتاجه ليكفى نفقاتك فى المكان الذى تعيش فيه ؟

How much does someone need to make to be well-off?

كم مقدرا المال الذى يحتاجه الشخص ليكون ربحه جيد ؟

Think about these questions and how you would answer them.

فكر فى هذه الاسئلة وكيف ستجيب عليهم.

Let’s look at the next section.

Did you hear?

هل سمعت؟

He might lose his house.

هو من المحتمل ان يخسر بيته.

He told me he’s six months behind on his mortgage payments.

اخبرنى انه متأخر 6 شهور عن مدفوعات الشهر العقارى.

Seriously?

بجد؟؟؟

I knew he was in debt, but I had no idea it was that bad.

كنت اعلم انه مدين ولكن لم يكن لدى فكره بأنه بهذا السوء.

He has other loans too, apparently.

هو ايضا لديه قروض اخرى ,على ما يبدوا.

The car, the furniture: everything was bought on credit.

السيارة , الاثاث: كل شىء تم شرائه بالبطاقة الائتمانية.

He has three or four credit cards, all maxed out.

لديه 3 او 4 بطاقات ائتمان ..جميعهم وصلوا الى الحد الاقصى .

He owes a lot of money.

هو يدين بالكثير من المال.

What’s he going to do?

ماذا سيفعل ؟

Well, he can’t even keep up with the interest, let alone the actual repayments.

حسنا , لا يمكنه حتى مواكبة الفائدة ,ناهيك عن السداد الفعلى .

He’ll have to declare bankruptcy, but he’ll lose everything.

سيتعين عليه اعلان الافلاس , ولكنه سيخسر كل شىء.

That’s awful.

هذا فظيع .

Of course, he should have been more responsible, but how could they lend him so much money?

بالطبع , كان من المفترض أن يكون اكثر مسؤليه, لكن كيف اقرضوه الكثير من المال ؟

They must have known he wouldn’t be able to pay it back.

يجب ان يعرفوا انه غير قادر على ردها.

I don’t know.

لا اعلم .

It’s a bad situation.

هذا موقف سىء .

When you borrow money from the bank, you take out a loan.

عندما تقترض المال من البنك فأنت تحصل على قرض .

If you’re borrowing money to buy a house or an apartment, there’s a special word

لو انت تقترض المال لشراء منزل او شقة ..هناك كلمة خاصة لهذا

for it: mortgage.

وهى الرهم العقارى

The spelling is strange, so practice the pronunciation: mortgage.

الهجاء غريب , لذلك مارس النطق: الرهن العقارى

You need to repay a loan.

انت تحتاج اعادة دفع القرض.

Generally, you do this by making payments every month.

عموما , انت تفعل ذلك عن الطريق الدفع كل شهر

Some of the payment is interest: an extra percentage which you pay to the bank.

بعض الدفعات هى فائدة : نسبة مئوية اضافية تدفعها الى البنك.

When you finish paying back a loan, you pay it off.

عندنا تنتهى من سداد القرض , فأنت تدفعه

If you have a lot of loans, then you’re in debt.

اذا كان لديك الكثير من القروض ,حينها تكون فى الديون

This means you owe money.

هذا يعنى انك مدين بالمال.

In the dialogue, you heard the phrase he owes a lot of money.

فى الحوار انت سمعت جمله (هو مدين بالكثير من المال).

Let’s look at some more examples with this language:

هيا نرى امثلة اخرى فى هذه اللغة:

It’ll take us another ten years to pay off our mortgage.

سيستغرق الأمر عشر سنوات أخرى لتسديد قرضنا العقاري.

The interest on our car loan is ridiculously high.

الفائدة على قرض سيارتنا عالية بشكل يبعث على السخرية.

I never borrow money; I don’t like being in debt.

لا لا افترض المال ابدا ;انا لا احب اكون مديون

In the dialogue, we were talking about someone who had bought a lot of things on credit.

فى الحوار كنا نتحدث عن شخص اشترى الكثير من الاشياء بالبطاقة الائتمانية.

If you buy something on credit, you take out a loan just to buy this one thing.

اذا اشتريت شىء بالبطاقة فأنت تأخذ قرض لتدفع لهذا الشىء

We also mentioned that he has maxed out credit cards.

لقد ذكرنا ايضا انه وصل للحد الاقصى من بطاقة الائتمان

You max out a credit card when you borrow the maximum amount you can on it.

يمكنك ان تصل الى الحد الاقصى فى بطاقة الائتمان عندما تقترض كل المال الذى يمكنك دفعه

Finally, if you can’t pay back your debts, you’ll have to declare bankruptcy.

اخيرا , اذا تعذر عليك سداد ديونك ,فسيتعين عليك اعلان الافلاس .

Your debts are cancelled, but you also lose anything you have which is worth money.

ديونك يتم الغائها , ولكن انت ايضا ستخسر أى شىء لديك يستحق المال

So, think about some questions: have you ever taken out a loan or bought something on credit?

لذا, فكر فى بعض الاسئلة : هل اخذت قرض او اشتريت شىء ما بالبطاقة الائتمانية ؟

In your country, if someone is in a lot of debt, can they declare bankruptcy?

فى بلدك اذا كان هناك شخص يعانى من قدر كبير من الديون فهل يمكنه اعلان الافلاس ؟

What happens to the money they owe?

ما يحدث للمال الذى اقترضه؟

Again, think about how you would answer these questions, and review the dialogue and the

explanations if you need to.

You can buy me dinner when you’ve made your first million.

What can you do with your savings?

ما الذى تستطيع فعله مع مدخراتك ؟

You can keep them in the bank in a savings account, but you won’t earn much interest.

تستطيع الاحتفاظ بهم فى البنك فى حساب التوفير ولكن

Alternatively, you can invest in something, like shares, bonds, or funds.

بدلا من ذلك يمكنك استثمارهم فى شىء ما مثل الاسهم او السندات او الارصده

You can say shares or stocks; both have the same meaning.

يمكنك قول اسهم او اسهم كلاهما بنفس المعنى.

You say stock market, but in other cases, share is more common.

انت تقول سوق الاموال الماليه ولكن فى احوال اخرى تكون (سهم) اكثر شيوعا

You can invest in or put money into something.

يمكنك الاستثمال او وضع مالك فى شىء.

More informally, you can also get into something.

بطريقة غير رسمية : يمكنك الوصول الى شىء ما.

For example:

على سبيل المثال :

Do you think I should get into crypto?

هل تعتقد انى يجب ان ادخل فى التشفير ؟

He put half of his savings into government bonds.

هو وضع نصف مدخراته فى السندات الحكومية.

You should only invest in shares if you know what you’re buying.

انت يجب ان تستثمر فى الاسهم فقط اذا كنت تعلم ما الذى تشتريه.

When you buy an asset, like a share or a bond, its price can go up or down.

عندما تشترى شىء ثمين مثل سهم او سند مالى يمكن لسعره ان يرتفع او ينخفض

If it goes up very far or fast, you can say it takes off.

اذا صعدت بشكل كبير او سريع , يمكنك القول انها تنطلق

If it goes down very fast, it crashes.

لو انخفضت سريعا فهى تتحطم.

For example:

على سبيل المثال:

I bought Apple shares in 1989.

انا اشتريت اسهم ابل فى عام 1989.

I knew they’d take off one day!

انا اعرف انهم سينطلقوا يوما ما.

They lost a lot of money when the stock market crashed in 2008.

ولكن خسروا الكثير من المال عندما تحطم سوق الاسهم فى 2008.

If you do well, you might double or triple your money.

لو انت حظك حلو يمكن لأموال ان تكون الضف او الثلاث اضعاف.

Triple means you increase something three times; for example, if you turn 100 dollars

(تربل) تعنى زيادة الشىء ثلاث اضعافها . على سبيل المثال: لو حولت ال100 دولار

into 300 dollars.

الى 300 دولار

If you don’t do well, you could lose everything or get wiped out.

لو حظك زفت,, ممكن تخسر كل حاجة

If you get wiped out, you lose all of the money you invested.

اذا تم القضاء عليها فستفقد كل المال الذى وضعته فيها.

Let’s look at some example sentences:

هيا نرى امثلة لجُمل اخرى

If you make 7 per cent a year, you can double your money in ten years.

اذا ربحت 7% فى السنة يمكنك مضاعفة اموالك فى عشر سنوات.

He put his life savings into Enron shares, then got completely wiped out.

هو وضع مدخراته فى اسهم ينرون وبعدها تم القضاء عليها تماماً

If you had savings to invest, what would you invest in?

اذا وضعت مدخراتك فى الاستثمار , ما الذى ستستثمر فيه ؟

Think about how you would answer.

فكر بماذا ستجيب .

Finally, we have one more question for you: some people say that money can’t buy happiness.

اخيرا لدينا سؤال اخر اليك : بعض الناس يقولوا ان المال لا يستطيع شراء السعادة
