Basic English Grammar: How to Use WAS and WERE

In this lesson you'll learn how to use the past tense of the verb "to be".

Now, as you know, the verb "to be" is a really important verb, so in this lesson you'll learn

So, the verb "to be", of course, can be used in the present, in the past, and also in the future.

إذاً الفعل "to be" بالطبع ممكن استخدامه في الحاضر والماضي والمستقبل

But in this lesson we are focusing on how to use it in the past.

ولكن في هذا الدرس سوف نركز على طريقة استخدامه في "الماضي"

I'm going to just review very quickly how to use it in the present, but I think you

انا سوف اراجع سريعاً كيف يستخدم في الحاضر, ولكن اعتقد انك

already know that.

تعلم ذلك جيداً

Right?

صحيح.!

Okay.

حسناً

So, when we say: "The present", what do we mean by that?

عندما نقول " الحاضر" ماذا نقصد بذلك؟

It could mean right now, it could mean this year, it could mean today.

من الممكن انه يعني حالاً, هذه السنه,اليوم.

Right?

حسناً

So, for example: "I am at work right now.

كامثال " انا في العمل الان"

Yesterday I was at home."

بالأمس كنت في البيت!

So when I say "was", that's the past.

حسناً عندما اقول " كان" ذلك يعني الماضي.

The past can be yesterday, last night, last week, five years ago; any time before now

الماضي من الممكن ان يكون امس, الليله الماضية, الاسبوع الماضي, خمس سنوات من الان, اي وقت غير الان.

is the past.

في الماضي

Okay.

حسناً!

So, let's take another example.

نأخذ مثال آخر.

"He is a manager this year.

" هو مدير هذه السنه"

Last year he was a worker".

السنه الفائته كان عامل.

"He is" becomes "He was".

"هو" أصبحت " لقد كان"

Next: "She is in London today.

التالي: " انها في لندن اليوم"

Yesterday she was in Paris."

أمس لقد كانت في باريس

Again, "is" became "was".

مره اخرى, "هي" أصبحت "كانت"

Another example: "It is cold today.

مثال آخر:"إن اليوم بارد"

Yesterday it was hot."

بالامس لقد كان حار

So, once again, "is" became "was".

ايضاً مره اخرى, "إن" اصبح "كان"

So what's the pattern here?

ماهو النمط هنا؟

What do you see?

ماذا ترى؟

I know you see the pattern, so the pattern is that all of these became "was".

انا اعلم انك ترى النمط, إذاً النمط هنا ان كل هولاء تحولت إلى " كان "

So: "I am", "I was"; "He is", "He was"; "She is", "She was"; "It is", "It was", right?

إذا " انا" , " لقد كنت" : "إنه" , "لقد كان" : "هي " , "لقد كانت": "إنه" , " لقد كان", صح؟

So all of these: "am" and "is" become "was" in the past.

حسناً كل هذه "am" و "is" اصبحت "was" في الماضي.

All right?

حسناً؟

Let's go to some other pronouns.

لنذهب إلى بعض الضمائر

"We are studying right now.

" نحن ندرس الان"

Yesterday we were working".

"بالامس لقد كنا نعمل"

"We were", make sure you pronounce that properly.

" we were", كن متأكداً تنطق ذلك بشكل صحيح .

A lot of people make a mistake when they say "were".

الكثير من الاشخاص يخطئون عند القول "were''

It's not the word "where", like the question.

هي ليست الكلمه "where= أين"

It's "were".

إنه "were" == "لقد كنا"

Okay?

حسناً!

Say it with me: "We were studying."

هيا نقولها معاً " لقد كنا ندرس"

Good.

جيد.

Or, sorry: "We were working."

او, "لقد كنا نعمل"

All right.

حسناً

Another example: "You are married today.

مثال آخر : "انت متزوج اليوم "

Yesterday you were single."

"بالامس كنت عازب"

Okay?

حسناً!

Somebody just got married.

أحدهم تزوج للتوو! ( الله يرزقنا وأياكم)

All right.

حسناً!

"They are here right now, but a few hours ago they were over there."

"لقد كانوا هنا الان , ولكن بعد ساعات ذهبوا إلى هناك"

Okay?

حسناً

All right.

نكمل

So, what do you see here?

إذا, ماذا ترى هنا؟

Another pattern.

نمط أخر

Whatever is "are" in the present tense becomes "were" in the past tense, that's all.

أيا كان "نحن" في الحاضر تصبح "كنا" في الماضي, هذا كل شي.

So there's only two possibilities in the past tense: "was" or "were".

إذا هنالك فقط احتمالان في الماضي "كان" او "كنا".

Okay?

حسناً

So, here's a little review: "am" and "is" become "was"; and "are" becomes "were".

حسناً , قليلاً من المراجعه "انا" و "هو" تصبح " كان" و "نحن" تصبح "كنا".

Now, one last little point: "was" and "were" can be used by themselves.

الان, نقطه اخيره , " كان" و "كنا" من الممكن ان تستخدم بأنفسهم.

Okay?

حسناً

So this can be a verb used by itself.

إذا هذا من الممكن ان يكون فعل يستخدم بنفسه

For example: "It was hot."

مثال " لقد كان حار"

This is just the verb "to be" by itself, or "was" and "were" can be used as helping verbs.

هذا فقط فعل "to be" يستخدم بنفسه , او " كان" و "كنا" تستخدم كا أفعال مساعده.

For example: "We were working."

مثال " لقد كنا نعمل"

Okay?

حسناً

So that's just a little something to keep in mind.

إذا هذا فقط شي صغير يجب ان تركز عليه.

Now, next, you'll learn how to use "was" and "were" in English.

الآن سوف تتعلم كيف تستخدم " كان " و " كنا" في الانجليزيه!

Now let's look at how to use "was" and "were" in positive sentences, negative sentences,

الآن دعونا نأخذ نظره على طريقة استخدام " كان" و " كنا" في الجُمل الايجابيه و السلبيه.

and also in questions.

وايضضاً في الاسئله

حسناً

So, as you've already learned: "I", "He", "She", and "It" all use "was".

كما تعلمنا سابقاً "انا " "هي " "إنه" كلها تستخدم " كان"

Right?

حسناً

"I was at home", "He was at home", "She was at home", "It was at home".

"لقد كنت في المنزل " , " لقد كان في المنزل ", "لقد كانت في المنزل ", " كان في المنزل "

"It" can be for a thing, for example, a cellphone.

"it" تستخدم للجماد , كا الجوال , الكتاب, القلم ....

All right?

حسناً

If you want to make that sentence negative, then basically in English what we have to

إذا كنت تريد ان تجعل الجمله سلبيه ماستفعله هو

add is the word "not": "I was not", but when we're speaking we don't usually say: "I was

فقطط اضف "لا" " لا لم أكن " ,, ولكن عندما نتكلم لانقول في العاده : " لا لم اكن

not at home."

في المنزل "

We just say something a little shorter, we say: "I wasn't at home."

فقط نقول جمله اقصر " انا لم اكن بالمنزل "

Do you want to repeat that after me so you can learn how to pronounce it really well?

هل تريد ان تكرر معي حتى تستطيع من نطقها بشكل صحيح ؟

"I wasn't at home."

" انا لم اكن بالمنزل "

Now, when you're writing it, just remember that the apostrophe goes where we take out

الان, عندما تكتب "إنه" , فقط تذكر ان الفاصله العلويه فقط تحذف الحرف O

the "o".

So: "was" and "not", take out the "o" and add the apostrophe, and then you'll not only

إذا " كان " و " لم" , تحذف فقط حرف o وتضع الفاصله , وعندها انت لن تقولها بشكل ممتاز

say it perfectly, you'll also spell it perfectly.

ولكن ايضاً تنطقها بشكل ممتاز.

Good.

جيد

So: "I was", "I wasn't".

إذا " لقد كنت" , " لا لم أكن"

And then to make a question, we just change the order.

وبعد ذلك عندما تريد ان تسأل , تغير الترتيب فقط

Same word, right?

نفس الكلمات , صحيح ؟

"Was I at home?

" كنت في المنزل ؟"

I don't remember.", "Was he at school?", "Was she at work?", "Was it on the shelf?"

"لا اتذكر ", " كان في المدرسه ؟" , " كانت في العمل ؟" , " كان على الرف ؟"

Okay?

حسناً

So you're just changing the order when you make a question, so that's pretty straightforward.

الان انت تغير الترتيب عندما تريد ان تسأل سؤال , هذا بسيط جداً

Now let's look at what happens with: "We", "You", and "They".

الان لننظر ماذا سوف يحدث مع " نحن" , " انت" , " هم"

For that we have to use "were".

لذلك نريد ان نستخدم " كان"

"We were", "You were", "They were".

" لقد كنا" , " لقد كنت" , " لقد كانوا"

And how do we make it negative?

كيف تجعلها جمله سلبيه ؟

Again, you only add the word "not".

مره اخرى , فقط اضف الكلمه " ليس"

So, if you were to say the full thing, you would say: "We were not at home", but as I

إذاً , عندما ترريد قول الجمله بكاملها , تريد ان تقول " لم نكن في المنزل ", ولكن كما

said, usually we shorten it, we contract it, and it sounds like this: "We weren't at home."

قلت , في العاده نجعل الجمله قصيره , وسوف تصبح هكذا :" لم نكن في المنزل ". ## مع حذف حرف o واضافه الفاصله العلويه.

Repeat after me: "We weren't at home.", "You weren't at home.", "They weren't at home."

كرر معي ,,,,

All right?

حسناً

And if you want to make a question, same principle, same rule, again, you put the word "were"

عندما تريد ان تسأل سؤال , نفس الطريقة , نفس الشروط , ايضاً تضع الكلمه " كنا" في البدايه

before, so: "Were we at home?", "Were you at school?", "Were they at work?"

" كنا في المنزل ؟" " كنت في المدرسة ؟" " كانوا في العمل ؟"

Okay?

حسناً

So you're just changing the order.

انت تغير الترتيب فقط

Now, how do you know that you know all of these things?

الان, كيف نعرف انك تعرف كل هذه الاشياء ^_^!

When you can make a positive sentence, a negative sentence, and a question.

متى تستطيع ان تركب جمله ايجابيه او سلبيه او سؤال!

So take one of them.

إذا خذ واحد منهم

For example, just take a simple sentence.

كا مثال ,جمله بسيطه فقط

Don't add a lot of vocabulary; keep it really simple.

لاتضع الكثير من الكلمات , اجعلها بسيطه قدر المستطاع

"He was tired."

" لقد كان مُتعب"

Right?

حسناً

"He was tired."

Make it negative: "He wasn't tired."

اجعلها جمله سلبيه :" لم يكن مُتعب "

Make it a question: "Was he tired?"

اجعلها سؤال :" هل كان مُتعب؟"

All right?

حسناً ؟

So take any of these pronouns...

خذ اي ضمير من الضمائر

These are all called pronouns, and make simple sentences, then make them negative, and then

هذه تسمى " ضمائر" , و ركّب جمله بسيطه, واجعلها سلبيه , وبعد ذلك

make them into a question.

اجعلها سؤال .

And when you can do that easily, then you have learned how to use "was" and "were".

وبعد ان تفعل ذلك بسهوله , تقدر تقول انك تعلمت " كان" و "كنا"

Next we'll do some practice so you can get really good at this.

التالي سوف نتعلم ببعض الامثله حتى تصبح جيد

So now we have eight sentences on the board and you're going to help me fill in the blanks

الان لدينا ثمانيه جمل على السبوره وسوف تساعدني لكي املئ الفراغات!

with "was" or "were".

بيـ " كان " او " كنا"

Let's go.

لنذهب ..

Number one: "Mr. Williams _______ at the meeting."

السؤال الاول : مستر وليليامز ........ في الاجتماع

Do we say: "Mr. Williams was at the meeting" or "Mr. Williams were at the meeting"?

هل سوف نقول : " مستر ولياميز كان في الاجتماع " او كنا

What do we say?

ماذا سوف نقول ؟

"Mr. Williams was at the meeting."

مستر ويليامز كان في الاجتماع

Very good.

جيد جداً

"Her classes _______ interesting.

السؤال الثاني : فصولها ..... مثيره!

Her classes _______ interesting."

"was" or "were", which one?

كان او كنا , ماذا سوف تكون؟

"Her classes were interesting", because it's "classes", right?

فصولها كانت مثيره ’ بسبب " فصولها " صحيح ؟

It's plural.

لانها جمع

It's like "they".

لانها مثل " هم"

Very good.

جيد جداً

"My suitcase _______ very heavy.

My suitcase _______ very heavy."

السؤال الثالث : حقيبتي ...... ثقيله جداً !

My suitcase is like what that we learned?

حقيبتي هي مثل ماتعلمنا ؟

It, it's one thing.

هي , شي واحد

So: "My suitcase was very heavy."

إذا " حقيبتي كانت ثقيله جداً!

Very good.

جيد جداً

"The stores _______ closed."

المتاجر ...... مقفله

The stores, it's plural.

المتاجر == جمع

It's like "they", so what do we say?

هي مثل " هم " , اذا ماذا نقول ؟

They were closed.

هم كانوا مقفلين

Very good.

جيد جداً

Number five: "It _______ raining yesterday."

السؤال الخامس : " كانت ....... تمطر امس "!

"It was raining" or "It were raining", which one sounds right?

" كانت تمطر " او " كانت تمطر البارحه" , اي واحده صحيحه؟

By now if you say it out loud, you will also hear what's correct.

بالان اذا قلتها بصوت عالي , سوف تعلم اي واحده هي الصحيحه !

It...

كانت

"It was raining."

كانت تمطر

Okay, good.

حسناً, جيد

Number six: "I _______ hungry.

السؤال السادس : " انا ......... جائع !

I _______ hungry."

انا " فراغ" جائع

So, what should it be?

إذا, ماذا سوف تكون؟

"I was hungry" or "I were hungry"?

" انا كنت جائع " او " كنت جائع "

"I was", always "was".

" انا كنت " , دائماً " كنت"

"I was".

" انا كنت "

Number seven: "_______ you late?"

السؤال السابع : " ....... متأخر ؟

"Was you late?" or "Were you late?"

" هل تأخرت " او " هل كنت متأخر؟"

Which one is correct?

ماهو الصحيح ؟

"Were you", okay?

" هل كنت ", حسناً ؟

Very important because we often ask questions to other people, right?

مهم ججداً لانه في العاده نسأل السؤال للاشخاص , اوكي ؟

So this one with "you" is really important.

إذا هذه مع " انت" مهمه جداًًً

"Were you on time?", "Were you late?", "Were you in a meeting?", "Were you at home?"

" هل كنت على الوقت ؟", " هل كنت متأخر؟", " هل كنت في اجتماع ؟", " هل كنت في المنزل ؟"

Lots and lots of questions that we ask like that, so pay attention to that one, okay?

الكثير والكثير من الاسئله نسألها بهذه الطريقة , ولذلك انتبه الله يرضى عليك حسناً؟

And number eight: "We _______ in Brazil."

السؤال الثامن :" نحن ........ في البرازيل "

We...

نحن ...

What should it be?

ماذا سوف نستخدم ؟

"We were in Brazil."

نحن كنا في البرازيل

Okay?

حسناً

Now, let's really quickly go through them and make them negative, because you can do

الان, لنراجع بشكل سريع ونجعلهم جمل سلبيه , لانك تقدر

it, I know you can.

انا ادري انك تقدر !

"Mr. Williams was at the meeting.

Mr. Williams wasn't".

الفرق فقط انك تضع لا والفاصله العلويه " wasn't"

You say it with me, okay?

"Her classes weren't interesting.", "My suitcase wasn't very heavy.", "The stores weren't closed.",

وكذلك هنا

"It wasn't raining yesterday.", "I wasn't hungry.", "Weren't you late?"

Yes, you can ask a question like that.

نعم, تقدر تسأل بهذه الطريقه

"Weren't you late?"

weren't you late ?

You can ask a negative question also.

تقدر تسأل اسأله سلبيه كمان

Okay?
