What's the difference between present perfect and past simple?

This is the most common grammar question I get

So I want to make it very, very easy so you understand and never forget.

The easiest way to understand this is in terms of time and experience.

What do I mean by that?

For example, something happened in the past, like:

he's telling his friends about his date last night.

When we use specific times, specific details, we'll use past simple

Again, he's using past simple because we know we're talking about last night.

We don't need to say it again.

We all know the form, right?

With present perfect, you use "HAVE" with I/you/we/they

In this case, this is a regular verb.

I mean, just remember that contractions

are always more natural when speaking English.

I have this experience, but she won't use Present Perfect. Why?

Because remember, with a specific time past simple.

So it's really easy.

If you want to say,

Past Simple - length of time. Why?

It started a year ago in the past and finished in the past.

That's why we use past simple

Remember asking "How long...?"

With a Past Simple means the time is finished.

Com um Past Simple significa que o tempo acabou.

"How long...?" with Present Perfect = The dog is alive.

"Quanto tempo...?" com Present Perfect = O cachorro está vivo.

"How long...?" with Past Simple = The dog is dead.

"Quanto tempo...?" com Past Simple = O cachorro está morto.

Yes, it's sad but now you won't forget.
