We're currently having an ice storm here in Ontario, Canada, and

अण्टेरियो, कनाडा में इस समय बर्फ़ीला तूफ़ान आ रहा है।

Well, we're having a little bit of freezing rain

यहाँ अण्टेरियो कनाडा में थोड़ी बर्फ़ीली बारिश हो रही है।

here in Ontario, Canada.

This is what we would call an ice storm.

इसी को हम बर्फ़ीला तूफ़ान कहते हैं।

If you look at the branch behind me,

अगर आप मेरे पीछे इस डाली को देखें तो,

maybe I'll give you a closer view,

मैं आपको थोड़ा नज़दीक से दिखाता हूँ,

you'll notice that we are getting rain,

आप देखेंगे कि बारिश हो रही है

but at the same time, it is below zero.

और साथ ही साथ, तापमान भी ज़ीरो डिग्री से नीचे है।

It is about minus one degree Celsius.

तापमान लगभग -1℃ है।

So as we get rain coming down,

तो जैसे-जैसे बारिश का पानी नीचे आता है

when it lands on different surfaces it freezes,

और ज़मीन पर जगह-जगह गिरता है, वो वहीं जम जाता है।

and we have what we would call an ice storm.

इसी को बर्फ़ीला तूफ़ान कहते हैं।

So let me show you a few things that you will see,

तो चलिये मैं आपको कुछ दिखाता हूँ

and let me teach you a few English phrases

और साथ ही साथ अंग्रेज़ी के कुछ वाक्य और शब्द भी सिखाता जाऊँगा

and words that you would use in an ice storm.

जिन्हें आप बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के आने पर इस्तेमाल कर सकते हैं।

I know this isn't going to be a video

because many of you live in parts of the world

So I don't want to stand too close to this tree,

मैं इस पेड़ के ज़्यादा नज़दीक नहीं खड़ा होना चाहता

because what you can see here is that the branches

क्योंकि जैसा कि आप देख सकते हैं कि

are covered in ice and what makes this dangerous

डालियाँ बर्फ़ से ढकी हुई हैं। ये ख़तरनाक इसलिये है क्योंकि

is that the entire tree is covered in ice,

पूरे पेड़ पर बर्फ़ जमी हुई है

and as the ice forms it makes the tree very heavy.

You can actually hear this tree behind me

आप इस पेड़ के टूटने की आवाज़ भी

cracking a little bit,

सुन सकते हैं

because the wind is blowing the branches,

क्योंकि हवा के चलने से डालियाँ हिल रही हैं

and some of the branches have even started

और कुछ डालियाँ तो पेड़ से टूटकर

to fall off the tree.

गिरने भी लगी हैं।

So one of dangerous things about an ice storm

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान जब आता है तो

is the ice weighs down the branches of the tree,

बर्फ़ से पेड़ों की डालियों पर वज़न बढ़ने का ख़तरा बढ़ जाता है

and some of branches will actually crack

और कुछ डालियाँ तो आज टूटकर

and fall off later today, so,

गिर भी जाएँगी।

not a good day to stand under trees.

अगर आप पेड़ के नीचे खड़ा होना चाहते हैं तो आज का दिन सही नहीं है।

So I thought, since we're out in an ice storm,

मैंने सोचा अगर हम बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान बाहर हैं ही तो

I should teach you some phrases

मुझे आपको कुछ ऐसे वाक्य सिखाने चाहिये

that have the word ice in them.

जिनमें "ice" (बर्फ़) शब्द हो।

The first phrase that comes to mind,

पहला वाक्य जो मेरे ज़हन में आता है

the first phrase I can think of is to break the ice.

वो है "to break the ice."

When you break the ice with someone,

जब आप किसी के साथ "break the ice" करें,

you're not actually stepping on ice.

इसका मतलब ये नहीं कि आप बर्फ़ पर चल रहे हैं

You are doing things that help you get to know each other,

बल्कि आप कुछ ऐसा काम कर रहें हैं जिससे आप किसी को बेहतर ढंग से जान सकें

so that you can have a conversation.

और उनसे बात कर सकें।

For many of you, you'll want to learn

आपमें से बहुत से लोग सीखना चाहते होंगे कि

how to break the ice with someone,

किसी के साथ "break the ice" कैसे करें

in order to have an English conversation with them.

ताकि आप उनसे अंग्रेज़ी में बात कर सकें।

A good way to break the ice is to just

"Break the ice" करने का एक अच्छा तरीक़ा है

ask how someone's doing, maybe tell a small joke,

किसी से पूछना कि वो कैसे हैं या एक चुटकुला सुनाना

or ask about the weather,

या फिर मौसम के बारे में बात करना।

that's a great way to break the ice

"Break the ice" करने का ये बढ़िया तरीक़ा है।

to start a conversation with someone

इससे आप किसी के साथ बात करना शुरू कर सकते हैं।

that maybe you haven't met before.

फिर चाहे आप उनसे कभी न मिले हों।

So one of the things that happens during an ice storm

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान ऐसा भी होता है कि

is the rain lands on our vehicles and it freezes.

बारिश का पानी हमारी गाड़ियों पर गिरकर जम जाता है।

So you can see here that this is a lot different

आप देख सकते हैं कि ये बर्फ़बारी से काफ़ी अलग है

than what we saw during the snow storm a few weeks back.

जो कुछ हफ़्तों पहले हुई थी।

Right now my van is covered in ice.

इस समय मेरी गाड़ी पर बर्फ़ जमी हुई है।

Tomorrow when I have to go somewhere,

कल जब मुझे कहीं जाना होगा

I will have to start my van early to warm it up.

तब मुझे अपनी गाड़ी वॉर्म अप करने के लिये पहले से चालू करनी पड़ेगी।

It's very hard to scrape this ice off,

इस बर्फ़ को हटाना बहुत मुश्किल होता है।

even with an ice scraper,

आइस स्क्रेपर से भी बहुत मुश्किल से हटती है।

but one of the things you will see during an ice storm

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान आप देखेंगे कि

is a lot of vehicles get covered in a thin layer of ice.

बहुत सी गाड़ियों पर बर्फ़ की एक पतली परत जम जाती है।

Another thing that happens during an ice storm,

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान ऐसा भी होता है कि,

which might not be very easy for you to see is that

ये देखने में शायद आपको थोड़ी मुश्किल हो,

surfaces become like skating rinks.

कुछ सतहें स्केटिंग रिंक की तरह हो जाती हैं।

In fact we will often say during an ice storm,

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान तो हम ऐसा अक्सर कहते हैं कि

it's like a skating rink out there.

बाहर ज़मीन स्केटिंग रिंक की तरह हो गई है।

A skating rink is a place where you go,

स्केटिंग रिंक वो जगह है जहाँ आप

and you put on skates and you skate.

स्केट्स पहनकर स्केटिंग करते हैं।

But you can see my driveway behind me,

आप मेरे पीछे मेरा ड्राइव-वे देख सकते हैं।

there is a sheet of ice.

उसपर बर्फ़ की परत जमी हुई है।

If you remember in the video in the snow storm,

अगर आपको "snow storm" वाला वीडियो याद हो तो

I said there was a blanket of snow,

मैंने कहा था कि इसपर बर्फ़ की चादर बिछी हुई है

when we have an ice storm,

लेकिन जब बर्फ़ीला तूफ़ान आए तो

we get what we call a sheet of ice.

हम इसे "sheet of ice" कहते हैं।

So it's kind of shiny because my driveway

मेरा ड्राइव-वे थोड़ा चमकदार लग रहा है क्योंकि

is actually very slippery right now.

ये अभी काफ़ी फिसलन भरा है।

It is literally a sheet of ice.

इसपर बर्फ़ की परत जमी हुई है।

I could probably slide on it if I tried.

मैं अगर कोशिश करूँ तो शायद इसमें फिसल भी सकता हूँ।

Nope, it's not quite that slippery yet.

नहीं, अभी ये उतनी फिसलन भरी नहीं है।

Another English phrase with the word ice in it

अंग्रेज़ी का बर्फ़ से जुड़ा एक और वाक्य है

is as cold as ice.

"As cold as ice."

We sometimes use this to describe someone.

हम इसे कभी-कभी किसी व्यक्ति के लिये इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

It's the opposite of describing someone

ये "Warm person" का

as being a warm person.

बिल्कुल उल्टा है।

So we also will say someone is a very warm person,

हम ऐसा भी कहते हैं कि कोई बहुत ही "warm person" है।

usually like a grandmother,

आमतौर कोई दादी माँ के जैसा

or an older person is very warm and friendly.

या कोई बूढ़ा आदमी।

But if we say someone is as cold as ice,

लेकिन अगर हम कहें कि कोई "as cold as ice" है

it is the opposite.

तो वो "warm person" का बिल्कुल उल्टा है।

It means that they are not a very kind person,

इसका मतलब है कि वो व्यक्ति दयालु नहीं है।

they don't smile a lot,

वो ज़्यादा मुस्कुराते नहीं हैं

and maybe they're even a little bit mean.

और वो थोड़े खड़ूस भी हो सकते हैं।

Because the precipitation today is coming down as rain,

आज बारिश होने की वजह से पानी

it actually drips on surfaces,

सतह पर गिरकर टपक रहा है

and then it forms icicles.

जिससे पानी आइसिकल का रूप ले लेता है।

You can see here that we have some

आप देख सकते हैं कि

really cool icicles that are forming.

यहाँ कुछ आइसिकल जम रहे हैं।

On my tractor you can see that there is a row of icicles.

आप मेरे ट्रैक्टर पर देख सकते हैं कि कुछ आइसिकल जमे हुए हैं।

So there is a lot of beauty during an ice storm,

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान काफ़ी ख़ूबसूरती देखी जा सकती है।

in fact, I think today I might go out

मैं आज शायद बाहर जाकर

and take a few pictures,

कुछ तस्वीरें लूँ।

I'm just looking over there because a branch

मैं उस तरफ़ देख रहा हूँ क्योंकि एक डाल

just fell off the tree.

अभी-अभी पेड़ से गिर गई।

But we have icicles forming on

आइसिकल कई तरह की

a number of different surfaces.

सतहों पर जमते हैं।

They're really cool.

बहुत ही अच्छे लगते हैं।

As a kid I used to go out and get icicles

जब मैं छोटा था तब मैं बाहर जाकर आइसिकल तोड़ता था

and then I would eat them.

और उन्हें खा लेता था।

Tastes pretty good.

काफ़ी स्वादिष्ट लगते हैं।

So I'm not planning to go anywhere today,

आज मेरा कहीं बाहर जाने का प्लान नहीं है

but I'm really happy because

लेकिन मैं फिर भी बहुत ख़ुश हूँ क्योंकि

the same tires that make it safer to drive in snow

जो टायर हमें बर्फ़बारी के दौरान गाड़ी चलाने पर सुरक्षित रखते हैं

also make it safer to drive on ice.

वही टायर हमें जमे हुए पानी पर गाड़ी चलाने पर भी सुरक्षित रखते हैं।

Not totally safe, but it is nice to have snow tires

ये पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित नहीं है पर अच्छा है कि मेरी गाड़ी पर स्नो टायर लगे हुए हैं

on my van if I did have to go somewhere on a day like this.

अगर किसी ऐसे दिन मुझे कहीं जाना हुआ उसके लिये।

So I mentioned earlier that the branches on the trees

मैं ये पहले ही बता चुका हूँ कि पेड़ों की डालियों पर

are becoming heavy because they have ice on them.

बर्फ़ होने की वजह से उनमें वज़न बढ़ जाता है।

The same will happen to our power lines.

हमारी पावर लाइन के साथ भी यही होता है।

So in fact, right now in the house,

अपने घर में इस समय

we are making sure that we are charging

हम अपनी सारी टॉर्चें

all of our flashlights,

चार्ज कर रहे हैं

because when you get ice on power lines like this,

क्योंकि जब कभी भी पावर लाइन पर बर्फ़ जमती है,

the weight of the ice can make the power lines fall,

तो बर्फ़ के वज़न से ऐसा हो सकता है कि पावर लाइन गिर जाए

and you can have a power outage.

और बिजली चली जाए।

In English we say power outage to indicate a time

अंग्रेज़ी में हम "power outage" शब्द का इस्तेमाल तब करते हैं जब

when we have no working electricity

हमारे घरों या दफ्तरों में

in our homes or at our businesses.

बिजली न आ रही हो।

So I'm not sure how well you can see it, but up here,

पता नहीं आप इसे अच्छी तरह से देख पा रहे हैं या नहीं। ऊपर वहाँ पे

there is ice and icicles forming on the power line,

पावर लाइन पर बर्फ़ जम रही है।

so it is incredibly dangerous on a day like this,

ऐसे दिनों ये काफ़ी ख़तरनाक हो सकता है

because power lines can fall,

क्योंकि पावर लाइन गिर सकती है

and that sometimes results in a power outage.

और कभी-कभी इस वजह से बिजली चली जाती है।

I really hope the power doesn't go out today though,

मैं उम्मीद करूँगा की आज बिजली न जाए

'cause I wanna finish editing this video.

क्योंकि मुझे इस वीडियो की ऐडिटिंग पूरी करनी है।

I thought this branch was pretty cool.

मुझे लगा ये डाल काफ़ी अच्छी लग रही है।

Another English phrase with the word ice in it

बर्फ़ से जुड़ा अंग्रेज़ी का एक और वाक्य है

is to put something on ice.

"To put something on ice."

When we say in English that we're going to

जब हम अंग्रेज़ी में कहें कि हम

put something on ice,

"put something on ice" कर रहे हैं,

it means that we are going to put it on hold.

इसका मतलब है कि हम किसी काम को बाद के लिये रख रहे हैं।

Maybe you are doing a certain project at work,

मान लीजिये कि आप किसी प्रोजैक्ट पर काम कर रहे हैं

and you might put that project on ice.

और आप उस प्रोजैक्ट को "put on ice" कर दें

That would mean that you are not going to work on it

इसका ये मतलब हुआ है आप उसपर कुछ वक़्त के लिये

for just a little bit.

काम नहीं करेंगे।

So when you put something on ice,

तो जब आप किसी काम को "put on ice" करें

it means you are putting it on hold.

इसका मतलब है कि आप उसे बाद के लिये रख रहे हैं।

So I just wanted to stop and show you this tree here.

मैं बस थोड़ा रुककर आपको ये पेड़ दिखाना चाहता था।

Ice storms can create some really

बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के आने से वातावरण की

beautiful things to look at,

ख़ूबसूरती वाक़ई में बहुत बढ़ जाती है।

this tree is completely covered in ice right now,

इस पेड़ पर हर जगह बर्फ़ जमी हुई है।

even the small berries on the tree are covered in ice,

यहाँ तक कि पेड़ पर लगे इन छोटे-छोटे फलों पर भी बर्फ़ जम गई है।

and it's just really cool in an ice storm

किसी बर्फ़ीले तूफ़ान के दौरान बाहर घूमना

to walk around and look at all of the things

और बर्फ़ से ढकी हुई चीज़ें देखना

that are covered in ice.

बहुत ही अच्छा लगता है।

Let me give you a closer look.

मैं आपको थोड़ा पास से देखने देता हूँ।

So these puddles don't have any ice on them yet,

इन गड्ढों में अभी बिल्कुल भी बर्फ़ नहीं है

but I wanted to teach you another English phrase,

पर फिर भी मैं आपको एक और अंग्रेज़ी का वाक्य सिखाना चाहता था

and that phrase is on thin ice.

और वो वाक्य है "on thin ice."

When you are on thin ice,

जब आप "thin ice" पर हों

it usually means you've done a couple of things wrong,

तो आमतौर पर इसका मतलब ये होता है कि आपने कुछ ग़लत काम किया है,

maybe at work, and if you do one more thing wrong,

मान लीजिये अपने दफ़्तर पर, और अगर आप एक और ग़लत काम करते हैं तो

you will probably be fired.

आपको शायद काम से हटा दिया जाएगा।

So when you're on thin ice,

जब आप "thin ice" पर हों,

it means you've made a few mistakes,

and if you make another one,

you will probably lose your job,

आप अपनी नौकरी खो सकते हैं

or someone will be very very annoyed with you.

So try in your life to never be

on thin ice with other people.

When something is slippery, in English,

it means it's easy to slide on it, and lose your balance.

It's pretty slippery right now.
