Infinitives and Prepositions: Common Grammar Mistakes 😲

Hi everyone. It's Jennifer. You know, I recently took a trip to my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

皆さんこんにちは。 ジェニファーです。 ご存知のように、私は最近、故郷のペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグに旅行に行きました。

Let me share a few things about that trip. See if you can catch any grammar mistakes.

その旅行についていくつかお話ししましょう。 文法の間違いを見つけることができるかどうかを確認してください。

When I arrive in Pittsburgh, I always look forward to drive over bridges.

ピッツバーグに到着すると、いつも車で橋を渡るのを楽しみにしています。

Pittsburgh is known as the City of Bridges.

ピッツバーグは橋の街として知られています。

That's because it has three rivers. The Allegheny River meets the Monongahela and they flow into the Ohio River.

3つの川があるからです。 アレゲニー川はモノンガヒラ川と合流し、オハイオ川に注ぐ。

Any mistake so far?

There was one. I said, "I always look forward to drive over bridges."

1つありました。 私は「橋を渡るのがいつも楽しみです」と言いました。

I should have said, "I always look forward to driving over bridges."

「橋を渡るのがいつも楽しみです」と言うべきでした。

"Look forward to" is a phrasal verb. TO is one of the particles.

「楽しみにしています」は句動詞です。 TO は粒子の 1 つです。

"Look forward to" takes an object.

「楽しみにしています」はオブジェクトを取ります。

A transitive phrasal verb isn't followed by an infinitive. We can use a noun or a gerund as the object.

他動詞句動詞の後に不定詞が続きません。 オブジェクトとして名詞または動名詞を使用できます。

Here are two other transitive phrasal verbs that end with the particle TO.

助詞 TO で終わる他の 2 つの他動詞句動詞を次に示します。

come down to

face up to

I've visited relatives in and around the Pittsburgh area.

ピッツバーグ周辺の親戚を訪ねてきました。

I have many associations with my home state,

particularly western Pennsylvania. One of those associations is polka music..

I admit to be embarrassed when I dance the Polka as a girl, but now I kind of missed the opportunity to dance.

Well, this past weekend my cousin's invited me to go to their church picnic.

After dinner, the priest got out his button box and played Slovenian music. I enjoyed hearing it.

I grew up listening to polish Serbian and Slovenian music.

I remember dancing with my grandparents and my cousins at polka festivals.

Did you catch another mistake?

I said, "I admit to be embarrassed." I should have said, "I admit being embarrassed."

"Admit" is a transitive verb and we can use a noun or a gerund as the object.

「Admit」は他動詞であり、目的語として名詞または動名詞を使用できます。

But it's also possible to use the preposition TO after "admit."

ただし、「admit」の後に前置詞 TO を使用することもできます。

This is a verb + preposition

これは、学習できる動詞 + 前置詞の

combination you can learn. I admit to being embarrassed.

Do not use an infinitive after "admit."

「admit」の後に不定詞を使用しないでください。

"Admit" and "confess" are two verbs that follow this pattern.

「認める」と「告白する」は、このパターンに従う 2 つの動詞です。

You can admit something or admit to doing something.

何かを認めたり、何かをしていることを認めたりすることができます。

You can confess something or confess to doing something.

何かを告白したり、何かをしたことを告白したりできます。

On my first night back in Pittsburgh, I went out to dinner with relatives.

ピッツバーグに戻った最初の夜、私は親戚と夕食に出かけました。

They took me to an old inn that served dinner in a courtyard, so we ate alfresco.

彼らは私を中庭で夕食を提供する古い旅館に連れて行ったので、私たちは屋外で食事をしました。

What I really appreciated was the size of my meal. The portions were just right.

Too many American restaurants tend to serve large portions, so we're tempted to overeat.

I think eating smaller portions throughout the day is a good alternative to stuff yourself at dinner.

Did everything sound right? I said something wrong at the end.

I said, "Eating smaller portions throughout the day is a good alternative to stuff yourself at dinner."

I should have said,

"An alternative to stuffing yourself at dinner."

Noun + preposition is another pattern that can combine with gerunds.

名詞 + 前置詞は、動名詞と組み合わせることができる別のパターンです。

You'll see this pattern with these nouns:

A common mistake is to identify TO as part of an infinitive rather than a prepositional phrase.

: よくある間違いは、TO を前置詞句ではなく不定詞の一部として識別することです。

TO as a preposition or a particle in a phrasal verb must be followed by a noun or

句動詞の前置詞または助詞としての TO の後には、名詞または名詞のように振る舞う何かが続く必要があります

something that behaves like a noun.

Gerunds behave like nouns.

動名詞は名詞のように振る舞います。

Can you quickly tell the difference between infinitives and prepositional phrases? Let's see.

Here's a set of questions you can answer for practice. Answer in complete sentences.

Note in the first question how I used a noun before the gerund "calling."

最初の質問で、動名詞「calling」の前に名詞をどのように使用したかに注意してください。

Remember that a gerund phrase may include a person who does the action.

Here's another example.

別の例を次に示します。

Who's staying? - You.

誰が泊まっていますか？ - 君は。

You staying. I don't mind you staying another night.

あなたが滞在します。 もう一泊してもかまいません。

I could also say, "I don't mind your staying another night. You're welcome to stay as long as you want."

また、「もう一泊してもかまいません。お好きなだけ滞在していただけます」と言うことができます。

"Your staying" is a possessive gerund.

「あなたの滞在」は所有動名詞です。

The possessive gerunds are more standard. Use possessive gerunds in more formal contexts.

所有動名詞はより標準的です。 よりフォーマルな文脈では、所有動名詞を使用します。

But you'll hear the possessive gerund used in all situations.

しかし、すべての状況で使用される所有動名詞を聞くことができます。

It's probably more conversational to say, "I don't mind you staying here another night."

「もう一晩ここにいてもかまいません」と言った方が会話的かもしれません。

Using an object pronoun rather than a possessive adjective.

所有形容詞ではなく、オブジェクト代名詞を使用する。
