Infinitives and Prepositions: Common Grammar Mistakes 😲

Hi everyone. It's Jennifer. You know, I recently took a trip to my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

안녕하세요 여러분. 제니퍼야. 아시다시피 저는 최근에 제 고향인 펜실베이니아주 피츠버그로 여행을 떠났습니다.

Let me share a few things about that trip. See if you can catch any grammar mistakes.

When I arrive in Pittsburgh, I always look forward to drive over bridges.

피츠버그에 도착하면 항상 다리 위를 운전하기를 기대합니다.

Pittsburgh is known as the City of Bridges.

피츠버그는 다리의 도시로 알려져 있습니다.

That's because it has three rivers. The Allegheny River meets the Monongahela and they flow into the Ohio River.

세 개의 강이 있기 때문입니다. Allegheny 강은 Monongahela를 만나 오하이오 강으로 흘러갑니다.

Any mistake so far?

There was one. I said, "I always look forward to drive over bridges."

I should have said, "I always look forward to driving over bridges."

"Look forward to" is a phrasal verb. TO is one of the particles.

"기대하다"는 구동사입니다. TO는 입자 중 하나입니다.

"Look forward to" takes an object.

"기다리다"는 목적어를 취합니다.

A transitive phrasal verb isn't followed by an infinitive. We can use a noun or a gerund as the object.

타동사 뒤에 부정사가 오지 않습니다. 목적어로 명사나 동명사를 사용할 수 있습니다.

Here are two other transitive phrasal verbs that end with the particle TO.

여기 입자 TO로 끝나는 다른 타동사 두 개가 있습니다.

face up to

I've visited relatives in and around the Pittsburgh area.

피츠버그 지역과 그 주변의 친척들을 방문했습니다.

I have many associations with my home state,

particularly western Pennsylvania. One of those associations is polka music..

I said, "I admit to be embarrassed." I should have said, "I admit being embarrassed."

"Admit" is a transitive verb and we can use a noun or a gerund as the object.

But it's also possible to use the preposition TO after "admit."

This is a verb + preposition

combination you can learn. I admit to being embarrassed.

Do not use an infinitive after "admit."

"admit" 뒤에 부정사를 사용하지 마십시오.

"Admit" and "confess" are two verbs that follow this pattern.

"인정"과 "고백"은 이 패턴을 따르는 두 개의 동사입니다.

You can admit something or admit to doing something.

당신은 무언가를 인정하거나 무언가를 하는 것을 인정할 수 있습니다.

You can confess something or confess to doing something.

무언가를 고백하거나 무언가를 고백할 수 있습니다.

On my first night back in Pittsburgh, I went out to dinner with relatives.

They took me to an old inn that served dinner in a courtyard, so we ate alfresco.

What I really appreciated was the size of my meal. The portions were just right.

I think eating smaller portions throughout the day is a good alternative to stuff yourself at dinner.

Did everything sound right? I said something wrong at the end.

Noun + preposition is another pattern that can combine with gerunds.

명사 + 전치사는 동명사와 결합할 수 있는 또 다른 패턴입니다.

You'll see this pattern with these nouns:

다음 명사에서 이 패턴을 볼 수 있습니다.

A common mistake is to identify TO as part of an infinitive rather than a prepositional phrase.

일반적인 실수는 TO를 전치사구가 아닌 부정사의 일부로 식별하는 것입니다.

TO as a preposition or a particle in a phrasal verb must be followed by a noun or

구동사에서 전치사 또는 입자로 사용되는 TO 뒤에는 명사 또는

something that behaves like a noun.

Gerunds behave like nouns.

동명사는 명사처럼 행동합니다.

Here's a set of questions you can answer for practice. Answer in complete sentences.

다음은 연습을 위해 답할 수 있는 일련의 질문입니다. 완전한 문장으로 답하십시오.

Note in the first question how I used a noun before the gerund "calling."

첫 번째 질문에서 내가 동명사 "calling" 앞에 어떻게 명사를 사용했는지 주목하십시오.

Remember that a gerund phrase may include a person who does the action.

동명사구에는 행동을 하는 사람이 포함될 수 있음을 기억하십시오.

Here's another example.

Who's staying? - You.

You staying. I don't mind you staying another night.

I could also say, "I don't mind your staying another night. You're welcome to stay as long as you want."

"Your staying" is a possessive gerund.

"Your stay"는 소유 동명사입니다.

The possessive gerunds are more standard. Use possessive gerunds in more formal contexts.

But you'll hear the possessive gerund used in all situations.

하지만 모든 상황에서 사용되는 소유격 동명사는 듣게 될 것입니다.

It's probably more conversational to say, "I don't mind you staying here another night."

"여기서 하룻밤 더 묵어도 상관없어요."라고 말하는 것이 더 대화적일 수 있습니다.

Using an object pronoun rather than a possessive adjective.

소유 형용사보다는 객체 대명사를 사용합니다.
