Day 5 - Glottal Stop - Understanding Fast Speech in English

I know that listening to fast speech can be a challenge,

but I'm here to remind you --

「私はできません」の I can't ではなく

Don't say, "I can't." Only say, "I can."

「私はできます」の I can と言いましょう

Americans often use a glottal stop with a final T,

Ｔで終わる単語には 声門閉鎖が起こります

as I did with the words "don't" and "can't."

例としては冒頭の 「don't」や「can't」です

A glottal stop is made when we cut off the sound in our throat.

声門閉鎖というのは 声帯を閉じることを言います

If you can say "uh-oh" and "uh-uh,"

「uh-oh」や「uh-uh」では 声門閉鎖を感じるはずです

you can make a glottal stop.

It's more important to understand it than make it.

内容を理解することが とても大切です

There is a difference -- and I want you to hear it --

声門閉鎖しないＴを 「トゥルーＴ」

the difference between a true T and the glottal stop.

声門閉鎖するＴを 「ストップＴ」と呼びます

Don't

Don't （トゥルーＴ）

Don't （ストップＴ）

Can't

Can't （トゥルーＴ）

Can't （ストップＴ）

So when will you hear a glottal stop?

ストップＴは いつ起こるのでしょうか

Well, when T is at the end of a sentence or phrase, as in...

会話がＴで終わる場合 たとえばーー

When T comes before a pause, as in...

Ｔのあとが途切れる場合 たとえばーー

A final T before another consonant can happen

そして音節や単語の最後のＴに 子音がつづく場合です

at the end of a syllable or the end of a word.

For example, people might complain about having a potbelly.

たとえば

ぽっこり出たお腹の英単語 「potbelly」や

Someone might ask you, "Won't you join me?"

相手を誘う表現の 「Won't you join me?」です

Let me say those examples again with slow, careful speech.

次に同じ例文を トゥルーＴで言いますので

I'll use a true T, so you can compare.

ストップＴとの 音の違いを聞いてください

Potbelly.

Potbelly （トゥルーＴ）

Won't you join me?

Won't you join me? （トゥルーＴ）

But that doesn't sound very natural, does it?

なんだか不自然ですよね

Let me say them a final time with a glottal stop.

最後にもう一度 ストップＴで言ってみます

Potbelly.

Potbelly （ストップＴ）

Won't you join me?

Won't you join me? （ストップＴ）

We'll also use a glottal stop

声門閉鎖はストレスのない Ｎの前でも起こります

with a T before an unstressed N sound.

Here are three examples:

fountain　button　importance （ストップＴ）

Let me say them slowly with a true T, so you can compare.

声門閉鎖をしないで ゆっくり言ってみます

fountain　button　importance （トゥルーＴ）

But in everyday speech, you'll hear...

日常会話で耳にするのは ストップＴです

Listen closely.

これから私が言うフレーズを 聞き取ってみてください

I'll say a sentence,

and you try to understand.
