Question Words Followed by Infinitives: When to Use Them? | English with Jennifer

that people don't know what to do with their  time. For me, the daily question is how to get

everything done. How can I fit everything into a  single day? What questions do you face every day?

Another question I face weekly concerns content.  I have to decide what to teach. For this lesson,

the task was easy. A viewer  submitted a very good question.  

كانت المهمة سهلة. قدم أحد المشاهدين سؤالًا جيدًا جدًا.

When can we use an infinitive after  a question word? Good question,  

متى يمكننا استخدام صيغة المصدر بعد كلمة السؤال؟ سؤال جيد ،

right? Why not use the full form? Well, in this  lesson, I'll not only give the answer but also  

صحيح؟ لماذا لا تستخدم النموذج الكامل؟ حسنًا ، في هذا الدرس ، لن أعطي الإجابة فحسب ، بل سأقدم أيضًا

some practice. And if you don't know already, I'll  explain what a bare infinitive is. Let's start.

بعض التدريب. وإذا كنت لا تعرف بالفعل ، فسأشرح ما هي صيغة المصدر المجردة. لنبدأ.

This structure should be familiar: How can I fit  everything into a single day? This is the word  

يجب أن يكون هذا الهيكل مألوفًا: كيف يمكنني وضع كل شيء في يوم واحد؟ هذا هو

order for a wh- or information question. We use  the question word + helping verb + subject + the  

ترتيب الكلمات لسؤال wh- أو معلومات. نستخدم كلمة السؤال + الفعل المساعد + الفاعل +

main verb. Sometimes I don't know how  to fit everything into a single day.  

الفعل الرئيسي. أحيانًا لا أعرف كيف أجعل كل شيء في يوم واحد.

What did I just do? I omitted the helping verb  and the subject. I don't know how to fit...

ماذا فعلت للتو؟ لقد حذفت الفعل المساعد والموضوع. أنا لا أعرف كيف تناسب ...

Question word + infinitive.  The meaning is understood.  

سؤال كلمة + مصدر. المعنى مفهوم.

How can I fit everything into a single day?  How should I fit everything into a single day?

كيف يمكنني وضع كل شيء في يوم واحد؟ كيف يمكنني وضع كل شيء في يوم واحد؟

We can use this pattern with the  question words: how, when, and where.  

يمكننا استخدام هذا النمط مع كلمات السؤال: كيف ومتى وأين.

And the question words "what"  and "who" as an object.

والسؤال عبارة "ماذا" و "من" ككائن.

Notice how we can use this  structure as the object of a verb.

لاحظ كيف يمكننا استخدام هذه البنية كموضوع للفعل.

I don't know how to fit  everything into a single day.

لا أعرف كيف أجعل كل شيء في يوم واحد.

People don't know what to do with their time.

لا يعرف الناس ماذا يفعلون بوقتهم.

Again, this structure expresses "can" or  

مرة أخرى ، تعبر هذه البنية عن "يمكن" أو

"should." People don't know what  they should do with their time.

"ينبغي". لا يعرف الناس ما يجب عليهم فعله في وقتهم. يعد

Using a question word + an infinitive is  an alternative to a full embedded question.  

استخدام كلمة سؤال + مصدر بديل لسؤال مضمن بالكامل.

and uses the word order [verb + subject].  How can I fit everything into a single day?  

ويستخدم ترتيب الكلمات [فعل + موضوع]. كيف يمكنني وضع كل شيء في يوم واحد؟

An embedded question is not asking a real  question. We use [subject + verb] word order.  

السؤال المضمن لا يطرح سؤالًا حقيقيًا. نستخدم [الموضوع + الفعل] ترتيب الكلمات.

I don't know how I can fit  everything into a single day.

لا أعرف كيف يمكنني وضع كل شيء في يوم واحد.

When we use the short form with an infinitive,  we lose that subject in the embedded question.  

عندما نستخدم الصيغة القصيرة مع مصدر ، فإننا نفقد هذا الموضوع في السؤال المضمن.

It's understood. I don't know how  to fit everything into a single day.

انها مفهومة. لا أعرف كيف أجعل كل شيء في يوم واحد.

I also used this structure as a subject  complement when I said, "The daily question  

لقد استخدمت أيضًا هذا الهيكل كمكمل للموضوع عندما قلت ، "السؤال اليومي

is how to get everything done." The structure  follows the linking verb "is." Let's say I was  

هو كيفية إنجاز كل شيء." يتبع الهيكل فعل الربط "هو". لنفترض أنني كنت

writing a blog post with tips for time management.  I might title my post "How to Get Everything Done  

أكتب منشور مدونة به نصائح لإدارة الوقت. قد أسمي رسالتي "كيفية إنجاز كل شيء

in a Single Day." This structure can be used  in titles because it's nice and concise.

في يوم واحد." يمكن استخدام هذه البنية في العناوين لأنها لطيفة وموجزة.

Try using this structure. Rewrite the following  

حاول استخدام هذا الهيكل. أعد كتابة الجمل التالية

sentences with the question  word followed by the infinitive.

بكلمة السؤال متبوعة بصيغة المصدر.

Answers. One. I want someone  to explain where to go.

الإجابات. واحد. اريد شخص ما ليشرح الى اين نذهب.

Two. We didn't understand  how to start the project.

اثنين. لم نفهم كيف نبدأ المشروع.

Three. Do you know who to talk to about this?

ثلاثة. هل تعرف إلى من تتحدث عن هذا؟

Four. I asked what to do for neck pain.

أربعة. سألت ماذا أفعل لألم الرقبة.

We can also use an infinitive after "whether."  

يمكننا أيضًا استخدام صيغة المصدر بعد "سواء".

"Whether" is like "if" when we express  a yes-no idea. There's a choice.

"ما إذا كان" مثل "إذا" عندما نعبر عن فكرة بنعم لا. هناك خيار.

For example, I could teach on Instagram or not.  I decided to teach on Instagram in addition  

على سبيل المثال ، يمكنني التدريس على Instagram أم لا. قررت التدريس على Instagram بالإضافة

to YouTube. For a while, though, I couldn't  decide if I should teach on Instagram or not.  

إلى YouTube. لكن لفترة من الوقت ، لم أستطع أن أقرر ما إذا كان ينبغي علي التدريس على Instagram أم لا.

I couldn't decide whether I should teach on  Instagram or not. Now watch. I couldn't decide

whether to teach on Instagram or not. I couldn't  decide whether or not to teach on Instagram.

ما إذا كنت سأدرس على Instagram أم لا. لم أستطع أن أقرر ما إذا كنت سأدرس على Instagram أم لا.

Again, we can use this structure to express  the meaning of CAN, COULD, or SHOULD.  

مرة أخرى ، يمكننا استخدام هذه البنية للتعبير عن معنى CAN أو COULD أو SHOULD.

The structure typically follows these verbs: know,  explain, understand, decide, ask, among others.

يتبع الهيكل عادةً هذه الأفعال: اعرف ، اشرح ، افهم ، قرر ، اسأل ، من بين أمور أخرى.

Here's some more practice. Rewrite the sentences  with an infinitive after the question word.

إليك المزيد من التدريب. أعد كتابة الجمل بمصدر بعد كلمة السؤال.

Answers. Five. We couldn't decide whether  to work together or independently.

الإجابات. خمسة. لا يمكننا أن نقرر ما إذا كنا سنعمل معًا أو بشكل مستقل.

Six. He didn't know whether  to tell the truth or not.  

ستة. لم يكن يعرف ما إذا كان سيقول الحقيقة أم لا.

Or: He didn't know whether  or not to tell the truth.

أو: لم يكن يعرف ما إذا كان سيقول الحقيقة أم لا.

Seven. She doesn't know whether  to trust her new friend or not.  

سبعة. إنها لا تعرف ما إذا كانت تثق بصديقها الجديد أم لا.

Or: She doesn't know whether  or not to trust her new friend.

أو: لا تعرف ما إذا كانت تثق بصديقتها الجديدة أم لا.

Let's summarize the uses so far.  

دعونا نلخص الاستخدامات حتى الآن. لقد

We've seen the structure as the object  of the verb: I don't know where to start.

رأينا البنية كموضوع للفعل: لا أعرف من أين أبدأ.

As the subject complement: The  question is where to start.

كما يكمل الموضوع: السؤال هو من أين نبدأ.

It might also be an object complement.  I have no idea where to start.

قد يكون أيضًا عنصرًا مكملًا. ليس لدي أي فكرة من أين تبدأ.

Or even an adjective complement:  I wasn't sure where to start.

أو حتى صفة مكملة: لم أكن متأكدًا من أين أبدأ.

And sometimes the structure is used in  titles because it's nice and concise.  

وأحيانًا يتم استخدام البنية في العناوين لأنها لطيفة وموجزة.

What about the question word "why"? At the  beginning of the lesson, I asked two questions:  

ماذا عن كلمة السؤال "لماذا"؟ في بداية الدرس ، طرحت سؤالين:

When can we use an infinitive after a  question word? Why not use the full form?

متى يمكننا استخدام صيغة المصدر بعد كلمة السؤال؟ لماذا لا تستخدم النموذج الكامل؟

Hopefully, I answered that question. The structure  

أتمنى أن أجب على هذا السؤال. تعتبر البنية

with the infinitive is a concise  alternative to the full clause,  

التي تحتوي على صيغة المصدر بديلاً موجزًا للجملة الكاملة ،

but in the second question, I didn't use an  infinitive. Or did I? Why not use the full form?

لكن في السؤال الثاني ، لم أستخدم صيغة المصدر. أم فعلت؟ لماذا لا تستخدم النموذج الكامل؟

"Why" can be followed by the bare infinitive.  Some call it the zero infinitive or base  

"لماذا" يمكن أن يتبعها المصدر المجرد. يسميها البعض فعل الصفر أو

verb. It's the infinitive without "to."  Here's the affirmative: Why use the structure?

الفعل الأساسي. إنها صيغة المصدر بدون "to". ها هو الإيجابي: لماذا نستخدم البنية؟

Here's the negative: Why not be more concise?

إليكم السلبيات: لماذا لا تكون أكثر إيجازًا؟

Notice how we use this to shorten  the question, to be more concise.

لاحظ كيف نستخدم هذا لاختصار السؤال ، ليكون أكثر إيجازًا.

Try using the bare infinitive to  shorten the following questions.

حاول استخدام صيغة المصدر المجردة لتقصير الأسئلة التالية.

Answers. Eight, Why make  the effort to learn grammar?

الإجابات. ثمانية ، لماذا بذل الجهد لتعلم القواعد؟

Nine. Why ask for the impossible?

تسع. لماذا تسأل عن المستحيل؟

Ten. Why not dare to dream  beyond what's possible today?

عشرة. لماذا لا تجرؤ على الحلم بما هو ممكن اليوم؟
