When can we use an infinitive after  a question word? Good question,

right? Why not use the full form? Well, in this  lesson, I'll not only give the answer but also

some practice. And if you don't know already, I'll  explain what a bare infinitive is. Let's start.

This structure should be familiar: How can I fit  everything into a single day? This is the word  

이 구조는 익숙해야 합니다. 모든 것을 하루에 어떻게 맞출 수 있나요? 이것은

order for a wh- or information question. We use  the question word + helping verb + subject + the  

wh- 또는 정보 질문의 어순입니다. 우리는 의문사 + 조동사 + 주어 +

main verb. Sometimes I don't know how  to fit everything into a single day.  

본동사를 사용합니다. 때로는 모든 것을 하루에 맞추는 방법을 모릅니다.

What did I just do? I omitted the helping verb  and the subject. I don't know how to fit...

내가 방금 무엇을 했습니까? 조동사 와 주어를 생략했습니다. 어떻게 맞춰야할지 모르겠다...

Question word + infinitive.  The meaning is understood.  

물음표 + 부정사. 의미가 이해됩니다.

How can I fit everything into a single day?  How should I fit everything into a single day?

어떻게 모든 것을 하루에 맞출 수 있습니까? 모든 것을 하루에 어떻게 맞춰야 합니까?

We can use this pattern with the  question words: how, when, and where.  

어떻게, 언제, 어디서와 같은 질문 단어와 함께 이 패턴을 사용할 수 있습니다.

And the question words "what"  and "who" as an object.

그리고 질문 단어 '무엇' 과 '누가'를 객체로 사용합니다.

Notice how we can use this  structure as the object of a verb.

이 구조를 동사의 목적어로 어떻게 사용할 수 있는지 주목하세요.

I don't know how to fit  everything into a single day.

하루에 모든 것을 다 맞추는 방법을 모르겠습니다.

People don't know what to do with their time.

사람들은 시간을 어떻게 보내야 할지 모릅니다.

Again, this structure expresses "can" or  

다시 말하지만 이 구조는 '할 수 있다' 또는

"should." People don't know what  they should do with their time.

'해야 한다'를 표현합니다. 사람들은 시간을 가지고 무엇을 해야 하는지 모릅니다.

Using a question word + an infinitive is  an alternative to a full embedded question.  

물음표 + 부정사를 사용하는 것은 전체 포함 질문의 대안입니다.

An embedded question is not asking a real  question. We use [subject + verb] word order.  

삽입된 질문은 실제 질문을 하는 것이 아닙니다 . 우리는 [주어 + 동사] 어순을 사용합니다.

I don't know how I can fit  everything into a single day.

어떻게 모든 것을 하루에 다 담을 수 있을지 모르겠습니다.

When we use the short form with an infinitive,  we lose that subject in the embedded question.  

부정사와 함께 짧은 형식을 사용하면 포함된 질문에서 해당 주제를 잃게 됩니다.

It's understood. I don't know how  to fit everything into a single day.

이해되었습니다. 모든 것을 하루에 어떻게 맞춰야 할지 모르겠습니다.

I also used this structure as a subject  complement when I said, "The daily question  

또한 "매일의 질문은

is how to get everything done." The structure  follows the linking verb "is." Let's say I was  

모든 것을 완료하는 방법입니다."라고 말했을 때 이 구조를 주제 보완물로 사용했습니다. 구조는 연결 동사 'is'를 따릅니다.

writing a blog post with tips for time management.  I might title my post "How to Get Everything Done

in a Single Day." This structure can be used  in titles because it's nice and concise.

Try using this structure. Rewrite the following

sentences with the question  word followed by the infinitive.

Answers. One. I want someone  to explain where to go.

답변. 하나. 어디로 가야 하는지 설명해 줄 사람을 원합니다.

Two. We didn't understand  how to start the project.

둘. 프로젝트를 시작하는 방법을 이해하지 못했습니다.

Three. Do you know who to talk to about this?

삼. 이것에 대해 누구에게 이야기해야 하는지 아십니까?

Four. I asked what to do for neck pain.

넷. 목이 아프면 어떻게 해야 하는지 물어봤습니다.

We can also use an infinitive after "whether."  

우리는 또한 "여부" 뒤에 부정사를 사용할 수 있습니다.

"Whether" is like "if" when we express  a yes-no idea. There's a choice.

'여부'는 '예-아니오'를 표현할 때 '만약'과 같습니다 . 선택이 있습니다.

For example, I could teach on Instagram or not.  I decided to teach on Instagram in addition

to YouTube. For a while, though, I couldn't  decide if I should teach on Instagram or not.

whether to teach on Instagram or not. I couldn't  decide whether or not to teach on Instagram.

Instagram에서 가르칠지 말지 결정할 수 없었습니다. Instagram에서 강의할지 여부를 결정할 수 없었습니다.

Again, we can use this structure to express  the meaning of CAN, COULD, or SHOULD.  

다시 이 구조를 사용하여 CAN, COULD 또는 SHOULD의 의미를 표현할 수 있습니다.

The structure typically follows these verbs: know,  explain, understand, decide, ask, among others.

구조는 일반적으로 다음과 같은 동사를 따릅니다. 무엇보다 알다, 설명하다, 이해하다, 결정하다, 묻다

Here's some more practice. Rewrite the sentences  with an infinitive after the question word.

Answers. Five. We couldn't decide whether  to work together or independently.

Six. He didn't know whether  to tell the truth or not.

Or: He didn't know whether  or not to tell the truth.

Seven. She doesn't know whether  to trust her new friend or not.

Or: She doesn't know whether  or not to trust her new friend.

또는: 그녀는 새 친구를 믿어야 할지 말아야 할지 모릅니다.

Let's summarize the uses so far.  

지금까지의 용도를 요약해 보겠습니다.

We've seen the structure as the object  of the verb: I don't know where to start.

우리는 동사의 목적어로 구조를 보았습니다 . I don't know where to start.

As the subject complement: The  question is where to start.

주제 보완: 질문은 어디서부터 시작해야 하느냐입니다.

It might also be an object complement.  I have no idea where to start.

객체 보완일 수도 있습니다. 어디서부터 시작해야할지 모르겠습니다.

Or even an adjective complement:  I wasn't sure where to start.

또는 형용사 보완: 어디서부터 시작해야 할지 모르겠습니다.

And sometimes the structure is used in  titles because it's nice and concise.  

그리고 때때로 그 구조는 멋지고 간결하기 때문에 제목에 사용됩니다.

What about the question word "why"? At the  beginning of the lesson, I asked two questions:

When can we use an infinitive after a  question word? Why not use the full form?

다음에 부정사는 언제 사용할 수 있나요 ? 전체 양식을 사용하지 않는 이유는 무엇입니까?

Hopefully, I answered that question. The structure  

바라건대 나는 그 질문에 대답했습니다.

with the infinitive is a concise  alternative to the full clause,  

부정사가 있는 구조는 전체 절에 대한 간결한 대안이지만

but in the second question, I didn't use an  infinitive. Or did I? Why not use the full form?

두 번째 질문에서는 부정사를 사용하지 않았습니다 . 아니면 내가? 전체 양식을 사용하지 않는 이유는 무엇입니까?

"Why" can be followed by the bare infinitive.  Some call it the zero infinitive or base  

"Why" 뒤에는 원형 부정사가 올 수 있습니다. 0 부정사 또는 기본 동사라고 부르는 사람도 있습니다

verb. It's the infinitive without "to."  Here's the affirmative: Why use the structure?

. "to"가 없는 부정사입니다. 다음은 긍정입니다. 왜 구조를 사용합니까?

Here's the negative: Why not be more concise?

여기에 부정적인 점이 있습니다. 더 간결하지 않은 이유는 무엇입니까?

Notice how we use this to shorten  the question, to be more concise.

이를 사용하여 질문을 더 간결하게 만드는 방법에 주목하세요.

Try using the bare infinitive to  shorten the following questions.

단순 부정사를 사용하여 다음 질문을 줄여보세요.

Answers. Eight, Why make  the effort to learn grammar?

답변. 여덟째, 문법을 배우려고 노력하는 이유는 무엇입니까?

Nine. Why ask for the impossible?

아홉. 불가능한 것을 요구하는 이유는 무엇입니까?

Ten. Why not dare to dream  beyond what's possible today?
