I need to address some things...LIFE UPDATE & Cambridge Vlog

to English with Lucy.

I've got a very random video for you today.

It's a bit of a mix of everything.

I' decided it's important for me to give you

a little life update.

I also filmed a little vlog

which has Charlie and Harry

from Real English with Real Teachers in it,

but I didn't feel like it had enough content

to put up on it's own, so I'm including that as well.

I wanted to have a general chat with you.

I feel like there are a couple of things

that I need to address.

So the first thing I want to talk to you about

is last week, yeah let's talk about last week.

Last week was officially the craziest week of my life.

I got caught up in a media storm.

A media storm is when suddenly every newspaper

and TV outlet in the world wants to talk to you,

and then the next week it's completely gone.

So this week is much more relaxed

and much more chilled.

Actually at the time of posting,

so right now, I am in Seville

(speaking in a foreign language).

I considered doing a meetup in Seville,

but I wasn't sure that there'd be enough people

who would want to come,

so I chickened out, I didn't do it in the end.

So yeah, a couple of weeks ago,

my old university, the University of Westminster,

ran an article about English with Lucy.

I had just hit 300,000 subscribers,

and they did a lovely article

on what I've been up to.

I've put links to everything down below.

In some regions you might not be able to see everything,

but I'll just try my best to put everything

all the information down below

if you do want to read things.

The BBC then read up on the story

and wanted to interview me.

This is the local BBC.

It's regional, it's called BBC Three Counties.

And they came over to my family home,

and they just filmed me talking about English with Lucy.

And they posted a video to the BBC News website.

Again, the link is down below.

Now, one of the biggest and most important newspapers

in England, The Times, watched the video

and then sent me an email and some Tweets

asking if I'd be interested in doing an interview.

And I was incredibly shocked

because I genuinely didn't believe that English with Lucy

is interesting enough for people from the UK.

I understand that it's interesting for people

you know that are trying to learn English

as a foreign language,

but I think they were more interested in the story

behind it all, how a 22 year old from Bedfordshire

managed to start up a business

that gets millions of views each month

all from her bedroom,

because that's essentially what I did.

Bedroom, living room, same thing.

So I did the interview with them.

And I was mostly happy with the interview.

They did mention a couple of things

that like money.

Anything that you read about money

and what I supposedly earn,

take it with a pinch of salt, don't believe it,

because I have never ever ever

explicitly said what I earn to any journalist.

English with Lucy is my full-time job,

but you know I'm not rich at all.

(laughing)

But I do get to make a living from it,

and it is my full-time job.

Now The Times didn't really give me much warning.

We did a couple of Skype interviews

at eight o'clock on a Sunday morning.

I wasn't even at home.

I didn't realise it was going to be a Skype interview,

so I wasn't dressed.

I was in my pyjamas.

And then suddenly on Tuesday I woke up

and found out that I was on page three of the newspaper.

And from then on,

everything went crazy.

I got called by BBC, ITV,

those are the Channel Five,

loads and loads of news outlets.

They came to my family home to interview me and my family.

I went in and did a live national interview

on the lunchtime news.

I did a recorded interview on the local news as well.

I was on BBC Radio Four on their Saturday Live programme

with Leo Sayer, Charley Boorman, and Martin Bayfield

where I just felt like such,

I felt so unworthy of being there.

It's like oh my God I'm a YouTuber

and these huge amazing people who've done incredible things

are there chatting with me.

But it was really good fun.

I did interview on BBC Radio Scotland.

I'm going to do one on BBC Radio Cambridge.

Honestly, it has been amazing,

the response has been absolutely incredible.

And the most beautiful thing has been the response

from everyone else.

People from my old school, family friends,

the response from you guys,

the other English teachers in the world,

in the YouTube world.

I've received so many messages and emails

of like congratulations,

and I just felt so supported.

It was honestly beautiful.

I did cry. (laughing)

It was lovely.

So yes, that and the buildup to that

is why I haven't been posting so much recently.

Another contributing factor is I have moved house.

You might know this if you follow me on Instagram,

but I have actually moved from London,

I have moved from my parent's house in Bedfordshire

to Cambridge, which is so exciting.

I am adoring living in Cambridge.

I moved on the 19th of April,

and everything has been absolutely crazy.

The house isn't properly finished yet.

It is a lovely flat.

I'm furnishing it at the moment,

and it's got lots of outside space.

And when I have it properly furnished,

I will most definitely do a house tour

and show you around

because I think you might find it quite interesting to see

what I would put in a house and what's important for me.

I'm not actually in the house at the moment.

I'm in somebody else's house.

I really needed to film today

because I hadn't filmed in so long,

and it was making me feel really nervous.

So that's why I'm filming in a different location.

Now a couple of weeks ago I went to Cambridge

with Harry and Charlie

from Real English with Real Teachers,

and we wanted to film a little vlog

showing some sort of expressions

and showing what a real picnic is like

and some British food.

However, we ended up having so much fun together

that we forgot to film very much,

and what we did film didn't actually turn out

to be that educational.

But there are some funny moments,

so I've made a little montage of everything

we filmed together,

and I'll show you that at the end of the video.

But I think they're gonna be huge.

They are really really funny.

They are great teachers.

They are, they know their stuff so well,

and they are just two really nice people

that I really enjoy spending time with.

So I hope to see a lot more of them.

Now something else that I need to address

is where is your 250,000 subscriber video

with your dad Lucy?

Well because I moved house, I left my dad,

and also he's been incredibly busy.

He's been travelling and he's been working,

but I'm hoping to have him over in my flat soon

because he's not actually seen it since I moved in.

And we would definitely film that video for you.

I want to make it really special

because my dad is incredibly special to me.

So that's why I don't want to rush it

and just bring my camera and say, right dad,

Q & A because I don't think that would be

giving him the time and respect that he deserves.

So yeah that's everything I wanted to talk about today.

This is just a chatty video,

and I just thought I owed you all a little explanation.

Today I filmed lots and lots of videos.

I did some grammar videos, vocabulary videos,

pronunciation videos,

so we'll be back on our normal schedule.

And I'm sure at the moment I will have

a (speaking in a foreign language) in my hand.

So today we are in Cambridge.

We are sitting in a beautiful park.

- It's pretty.

- It's lovely isn't it?

We are going to have a picnic,

and I've brought some really British food,

and we're gonna try it and we're gonna give our verdict.

- What this baby?

- Oh this, look what Charlie's brought.

- This is called a hamper.

Oh, one second.

- [Lucy] Essential part of a British picnic.

Look at that.

- Cutlery plate, even got a corkscrew,

bottle opener.

- So wonderful.

And Harry, how are you feeling today?

- I'm feeling a little bit worse for wear.

- [Lucy] Worse for wear.

- Yeah.

- [Lucy] What does that mean?

- Worse for wear.

I'm not on my best form (laughing)

because well because of last night.

I had a drink.

So I'm not at my best. - Just one?

- [Lucy] You had one drink.

- I had one drink, it was a very big drink.

(laughing)

And now I'm suffering for it,

but I'm fine, I'm here for the picnic.

- If it was one drink,

then we could call him a one beer wonder.

- Exactly.

But because I'm English I have a very high tolerance

for alcohol.

- You like?

- I'm a geezer - What you like.

- It's what we call it, right, I'm a geezer.

- Yeah, especially with your collar up.

- What a beautiful day.

- God it's a really beautiful day today isn't it?

- It is.

- [Charlie] It's actually quite nice.

(laughing)

Oh it's a nice camera.

- Thank you.

I feel so bad for not using it

as much as I should.

- [Charlie] So how do you feel about those pork scratchings,

or are they pork cracklings?

- Cracklings, but I think that's just Sainsbury's

trying to be posh isn't it?

- [Charlie] Okay.

- They're gluten-free.

I think they are the best thing since sliced bread.

- [Charlie] Oh.

- Oh.

- [Charlie] Harry?

- That's a lovely idiom there.

- [Charlie] Can you explain that one Harry?

- Is there much explaining to be done there?

- [Charlie] I think so.

- Yeah I mean.

- Best thing since sliced bread.

- Sliced bread was a real innovation.

- [Charlie] Yeah.

- And so people would just like

why have we never had sliced bread before.

So now anything that's really good,

say it's the best thing since sliced bread

because that was a game changer.

- [Charlie] Exactly.

- I couldn't have explained it better myself.

- Right, guys.

- Well that is worth stopping for.

- I'm going to introduce this.

- That is like a cannonball.

- Do you know what this is?

- I do.

- Is that a Scotch egg?

- Okay.

(laughing)

- Well you ruined it.

- Just guessing, I don't know.

Is it?

- Yes it is a Scotch egg, well done Harry.

(hand clapping)

No excitement needed there.

This is a Scotch egg as Harry has told you.

- Scotch egg, that that is.

- Do you know what's inside a Scotch egg?

- An egg.

- Oh my God, you guys are just on one.

Actually you can hear a rattle.

- Something Scottish.

- It must be Scottish, mustn't it?

They've got a lot, they've got whiskey,

Scotch eggs, own brew.

- And they're getting into your picnic basket.

- It's all healthy, healthy stuff.

- Are they?

- No.

(laughing)

- [Lucy] Okay let's try this.

I think people are gonna lose their damn minds

when they see this.

Oh.

- [Charlie] Top of the morning to you.

- Oh my God look at that.

So it is an egg inside sausage meat

with bread crumbs.

Is it fried?

So yeah that's it with my vlog with Harry and Charlie.

Wasn't the most educational piece of content

I've ever put out on the internet,

but I hope you enjoyed it,

and it's nice to see you know what we get up to

and what we're like when we're not

in front of a camera teaching.

Because we're nice normal people.
