I thought about going back to bed.

I thought, shall I just go back to bed and forget about everything?

But then I changed my mind because I realised we have a beautiful live stream on a rather nice snowy day.

As you can see right now outside my studio window we have snow.

We have had a lot of snow right here in the birthplace of the English language, which is of course, you know where it is.

I know where it is.

It is England. And.

We are back.

It is so super duper wonderful to be back with you once more.

When you have snow at the moment, some lovely November snow.

I know over the past couple of weeks we've had many people watching in India,

people joining me from India, and I was starting to think maybe

because I've been doing this for a long time

and this is a serious thing I want to mention because I have been doing this for such a long time.

And I started out way back in 2006,

and over the first 2 or 3 years of doing this, I did get a lot of viewers.

But of course, as time goes by, things do change.

Other things come along.

Many, many people, hundreds of thousands of people on YouTube are now teaching English

as a second language, and I am just one of those people, a tiny small dot

on the landscape of YouTube.

However, over the past 3 or 4 weeks, I've noticed that I've got a lot of new viewers,

and many parts of the world are now joining my live streams.

And I was thinking to myself, maybe, perhaps, maybe I am having a little bit of a renaissance.

Is there a mr.

Duncan renaissance taking place, rebirth

to come around again, something that faded away

like me

in a roundabout?

2011 is when I started to disappear

on YouTube.

So perhaps this could be.

This could be my renaissance.

I haven't stopped doing this for all of the 18 years.

However, there are many people who think that I have stopped, but I haven't.

At no point have I ever stopped making my English lessons.

And of course, my regular live streams as well.

So it led me to think and maybe even dream of a renaissance.

Of course, the word Renaissance is an interesting word.

It literally means reborn to be reborn, you fade away or you disappear, and then slowly you return.

Like the phoenix rise from the flames.

So the word Renaissance is a noun.

It refers to

the period of rebirth or a return of spirit or popularity.

So the popularity of something, also the spirit of something as well, the feeling, the excitement, maybe

if you are in a relationship

that you've been in for many years, you might feel as if there needs to be some sort of renaissance.

Maybe some sort of reconnection.

So I like to think that I am at the moment, having a slight revival or renaissance.

It would be very, very nice.

Of course, the word Renaissance is normally used in reference to the revival of European art and literature

under the influence of classical models between the 14th and 17th century,

so between the 14th and up until probably at the end of the 16th century, there was a big revival with art.

The style of art, and also the way many things were done.

Many things were created buildings, paintings, styles

that had faded away suddenly became popular again.

There was a renaissance.

So perhaps, maybe, who knows, I could be having

a renaissance at the moment.

It would be very, very nice if I was honest with you.

Yesterday I was out in the freezing cold filming just for you.

And would you like to see what I was wearing?

Would you like to have a look at the clothes I was wearing yesterday, because it was so cold?

Whilst I was outside and I was out there for a very long time, and all I can say is I was absolutely freezing.

Of course, if you go out on a cold day, there are things you will need.

For example, you will need your scarf.

Scarf.

I love that word.

You put your scarf around your neck to keep you warm as you walk along so it protects your neck.

It stops your neck and your throat from becoming too cold.

Scarf.

So yesterday, if you watch my video that is available on my YouTube channel, you will notice I was wearing my scarf here.

Or what else?

I was also wearing my lovely gloves.

These are the special gloves that Mr.

Steve bought about three years ago.

And these are good.

You see, these are very good because you can wear them, but also you can operate

your touch screen at the same time.

So the problem with wearing gloves outside on a cold day if you want to do filming,

of course you can't use the touch screen.

However, with these you can.

So Mr. Steve bought these for me.

I think it was a Christmas present actually.

And these are amazing.

They keep you warm, but also they allow you to use the touch screen on your mobile device.

So that is what I was wearing yesterday as well.

Also I have my gloves, my scarf.

What else?

Oh yes, of course you can't go out on a cold day without wearing your nice thermal hat.

So this is a very special hat.

It has a beautiful warm lining, as you can see around the edge.

Also, it is very thick.

So if you wear this on your head as you go out, as you walk around, you will find you will stay quite warm.

Because this is made of

special material that keeps the heat in.

And of course, as you probably know, if you go outside without a hat,

you will lose a lot of the heat through your hat.

So we do.

You lose quite a lot of heat from our heads, so

a nice woolly hat,

a scarf, and also some gloves for your hands as well.

What else did I have on yesterday?

Would you like to see something else I was wearing? But you couldn't see

something else I was wearing underneath?

Oh, Mr. Duncan, are we going to see your underpants?

No. Don't worry, nothing like that. However,

you're not very far off.

I was also wearing these yesterday.

My lovely thermal underwear.

So I had these on.

And of course, these. Keep your legs warm.

They also keep everything

around the waist warm as well.

So these are things you will often see.

Or you will certainly see them for sale in shops.

If you go abroad, maybe if you go to a country like Switzerland perhaps, or I got these actually from China.

So when I lived in China, everyone would wear these during the winter months.

They would wear them under their clothes.

Sometimes people would wear maybe 2 or 3 of these under their clothes to keep them warm.

It seems

a little excessive, but it is important, of course, to stay warm in the winter.

So this is what I was wearing yesterday as well during my walk, and I bought these when I was in China.

And to be honest with you, they are still very useful.

So that is what I was wearing yesterday.

We also call these long johns, so I don't know if you've heard of that phrase before, but we do call these long johns.

You wear them under your trousers.

So that is the reason why I was feeling not too cold.

However, the problem yesterday was the cold air was going into my throat and into my lungs.

So today my throat does feel a little bit sore to say the least.

It is Wednesday and I am getting hot.

I don't think I need my scarf today, I really don't.

That's better.

I'm getting a little too hot, which of course can be just as bad as being too cold.

You can also be too hot as well.

At the end of this week it is Black Friday.

The big Black Friday sales begin and I know it.

This time of year, a lot of people become excited because they are waiting to buy their Christmas gifts,

or maybe their Thanksgiving gifts at this time of year.

So normally around this time there is something called Black

Friday popular mainly, and this is where it started.

It actually started in the United States.

And the reason why they have Black Friday, it is all to do with

making a profit at the end of the year.

So for many retailers, for many shop owners, it is their final chance of the year to actually make some money.

So when we talk about Black Friday, we are talking about the sale of current stock.

Maybe things that you are trying to sell off quickly, maybe something that is seasonal that won't be needed

next year.

So quite often we will have some sort of sale to remove or sell off the old stock,

the sale of of current stock normally at the end of the financial year.

So towards the end of the year, many shops will try to sell all of the things

that they don't need or they are trying to.

Sell off a final sale before the Christmas season.

A lot of people view Black Friday as a good opportunity.

It is a good opportunity, a good chance for those to get a bargain.

Maybe the final pay day before Christmas is when Black Friday normally occurs.

So quite often in the United States, for example, they have Thanksgiving.

So Thanksgiving is always towards the end of November.

I think sometimes it can be the beginning of December.

So normally Black Friday occurs

at the same time, around the same time.

It gives everyone an opportunity to rush out

and buy things for Christmas or for Thanksgiving.

And of course, there is the other seasonal festival.

Is it Hanukkah as well?

Hanukkah, which also is around this time of year, depending on which religion you observe.

So when we talk about Black Friday, we are talking about the sales at the end of the year.

And quite often even here now in England, we also have Black Friday sales as well.

Black Friday day sales occur everywhere now, including here in England and of course on the internet as well.

There are many places where you can get those bargains, especially at this time of year when people are thinking about

Christmas.

Not long to go now.

Before that arrives, I'm going to have a quick break and then we are back with lots of things.

We are looking at snow and ice. Also.

We are looking at words and phrases connected to find ING clues.

It is a very interesting subject that I've never covered ever before.

So we will be looking at that as well a little bit later on, and hopefully

my throat will calm down a little bit.

It's Wednesday, and this is

Wednesday.

It is the middle of the week for many people.

They are very excited.

They are excited because they know there are only a couple of more days to go before the weekend.

It does make a lot of people very excited.

Wednesday.

It can feel as if the week is already coming to an end.

A lot of people asking about Mr. Steve, how is Mr. Steve?

He is much better.

I would say he is over the worst of his stinky, horrible cold that he's had.

So Steve is feeling much better. Thank you very much.

There are so many illnesses going around at the moment here in England.

Everyone seems to be falling ill with colds and coughs and fever, all sorts of things.

So there is the view outside at the moment. Look at that.

That is what we have outside the window right now on this Wednesday afternoon, everything looking rather nice.

And, I suppose you could say festive because we often think about that.

You see, when we think about Christmas, we often think of snow and ice and cold things.

It is not unusual to do that. Talking of which,

I thought it would be interesting

to have a look at some snow and ice words.

Words connected to snow and ice.

If you live in a country where you get snow or ice, or maybe you live in a place

where you never see it, ever, because the place you live is lovely and warm.

How nice

the words connected to snow and ice.

Here we have snowfall.

Snowfall where we think of snowfall we often think of, I suppose, snow falling like this.

The snow will fall and everything will become white and beautiful.

As the snow falls.

We can also have the word freeze, freeze,

frozen.

A great word also, I believe a very popular Disney movie.

I think there were two of them when they

there was frozen. One,

which was very popular.

And then there was the second movie, frozen two, which was not quite as popular as the first one.

Also, we have Frost as well.

Chill, chill.

Now there is an interesting word.

The word chill can actually be used in more than one way.

Also, we have the word thaw,

so you can see there my tongue is making a little sound thaw.

When we talk about soul, we are talking about

snow or ice.

Slowly melting away.

And then of course we have the word melt as well.

So there are some words that we often use in connection to snow and ice.

Snowfall. The occurrence.

The occurrence or the event of snow.

Falling snow fall.

We often talk about snowfall if it's happening, or maybe if there has been snowfall.

So perhaps the landscape

is covered with snow.

We can say there has been snowfall.

The snow has fallen.

There is no snow on the ground.

It is lying on the ground.

The snow has fallen,

snowfall has occurred.

So we can use the word snowfall as a general term to name the event of snow falling.

Freeze.

Another good word because this can be used in many different ways as well.

Freeze the extreme lowering of temperature.

But when the temperature begins to drop, when it starts to go down, everything will freeze.

It will become cold.

It might be surprising to some of you to find out there are many countries that appear to be hot all the time,

but even in those countries it can be very cold, especially at night.

I'm not sure if it actually freezes, but it certainly gets very cold.

The extreme lowering of temperature, the action of freezing

to freeze something you are freezing

something so we can use it as an action as well.

Also, to become.

Motionless to

freeze.

The reason why we use this particular term.

Because of course, if you are still,

it looks as if you have frozen, you have frozen solid.

So that is the reason why we can use the word freeze to mean motionless to be still.

Something appears to have

frozen.

Maybe your internet connection isn't very good, so sometimes the picture

will freeze.

The picture will stop moving because your internet speed is very slow to freeze.

Also, we have frozen frozen,

an interesting word past participle of freeze, used as a verb.

So the past participle of freeze is frozen.

Something has frozen, it has frozen solid.

Maybe the action or the process of becoming cold to the point where you freeze

is frozen to have become solid or congealed.

Now there is a good word congeal.

To congeal is to go solid, to stiffen and go solid

blurred when you cut yourself,

or if you have a wound on your skin, quite often the blood will come out and then it will congeal.

It will slowly go solid, it will dry out and become solid

to have become solid or congealed by cold, to have frozen.

Something looks frozen.

A person might look cold.

A lot of people said yesterday, Mr.

Duncan, in your video, you looked frozen and I was my face and my throat was very cold.

Something is rigid or stiff.

Something must remain unchanged.

We can say that it is frozen.

Maybe a certain thing, maybe the price of things.

All of the prices are frozen.

So if you have frozen the prices, if you have frozen the cost of something, something is frozen.

It means it can't rise anymore.

The prices will not go up.

They are frozen.

Moving on.

Frost in the morning.

Quite often on a chilly morning you will wake up and you will find frost on the ground covering the landscape.

A degree of low temperature causing water to freeze.

So quite often frost is the appearance

of water, quite often on the surface, or maybe on the surface of plants or trees or the grass.

It will freeze and it will form into tiny spikes.

So if you look closely at frost, it has a very interesting shape.

It is like lots of little needles.

Frost because of the way it forms as it freezes.

You might have frozen due.

Frozen dew is often described as frost

the freezing process.

You can frost something, so if you frost something it means you are freezing. It.

You frost something.

Also, if you look inside your freezer, if you open the door of your freezer, you will see inside fine white coating.

There is a fine white coating inside the freezer that is also described as frost as well.

Frost

to freeze something as a verb.

To freeze something, you frost that particular thing to lower the temperature, to cause freezing.

So quite often these days, if you go to the supermarket, a lot of people will buy their fruit for their food,

their vegetables. They will buy it frozen.

It has been frosted to frost.

Something is to freeze it.

And then of course we have the opposite.

So I thought I would include this.

The opposite is defrost.

You defrost something.

To defrost is to allow something to warm up

instead of being frozen.

It will slowly warm up.

It will defrost before cooking certain types of food that has been frozen.

You have to allow it to defrost before you cook it, or else it might give you a rather unwell stomach.

Then we have the word thaw.

So this is the word I mentioned a few moments ago. Thaw.

The word thaw is the process of unfreezing

to unfreeze is to thaw, to become warm.

After snow has fallen is thaw.

We will often look outside as the snow begins to disappear.

You can describe that view as the thaw.

It is

the landscape changing once again as the snow begins to melt.

To unfreeze something is thaw.

You saw something or you thaw out something.

The snow and ice begins to melt away.

It begins to thaw,

thaw out.

As I said a few moments ago, something that will thaw out.

It will slowly

become unfrozen.

Melt an interesting word.

Melt something that melts.

Something that slowly begins to thaw out.

Or maybe

a block of

ice or the snow as it begins to become warm,

the snow and the ice will melt.

The slow dissolving of ice and snow, the softening of something due to the addition of heat.

You can melt anything really.

I suppose you can melt butter.

You can melt plastic,

you can melt

your hair.

I don't like the sound of that.

You can also melt your skin.

Of course, if you get burned badly, your skin will melt.

I don't like the sound of that at all.

And of course, certain types of material as well material that you wear can also melt.

Nylon.

Who remembers nylon now?

Growing up in the 1970s, everyone

was wearing nylon nylon shirts

on the on our beds, we would have nylon sheets.

Everything was nylon.

The only problem with nylon is if it catches fire, it will melt.

So imagine if you are wearing your pyjamas made of nylon

and something nearby catches fire.

Not very pleasant.

And the other problem with nylon, of course, is if you wear nylon pyjamas in bed with nylon sheets,

as you move around in the bed, you will get lots of.

Sparks.

Electric static will fly around as you move in bed.

So there are some words that we can use connected to snow and ice.

The arrival of snow and of course, the slow departure of snow as it falls,

as it lies or lays on the ground

and as it slowly melts away, it slowly disappears.

Static electricity can be very annoying.

Something I remember from my childhood wearing my nylon pyjamas inside

my nylon sheets underneath and on top of nylon.

So when you moved around you would get lots of sparks literally flying around.

It was kind of fun, to be honest.

It was a little bit fun.

There is a place actually you can go to.

I don't know if you've heard of it, but there is a place you can go to and if you stand in a certain area

now, I can't remember where it is, but of course I'm sure you will find out with your googling.

But there is a place that you can go to and there is a certain.

I don't know why, but there is a certain field of static electricity and if you stand, then your hand, this will go up.

It will stand up because of the static electricity.

I can't remember the name of the place now, but it is something I've seen a few times on YouTube with people standing and

being quite amazed because their hair is sticking upwards.

Do you like watching detective shows now?

I'm going to be honest with you.

There are two TV shows that I absolutely love and I know

that you already have probably guessed what one of them

is, but my two favourite.

Investigation

detective police procedural programs.

Columbo.

You see, you were right, I love Columbo.

If you've never seen Columbo, then

you are really missing out.

And I also like another show that is made here

in the UK called Inspector Morse.

It's not made anymore, but there are many, many series and many, many episodes of that particular show as well.

I do like detective programs or any film or TV show where a certain crime has to be solved,

and I suppose we are all interested in that type of thing, because all of us,

from time to time, might find ourselves having to become a detective.

Maybe something you are trying to find out, maybe something you are trying to discover,

something that you want to follow.

Something you want to find out you are trying to make connections or follow clues.

So quite often, if you want to know more about a certain thing, maybe there is something happening.

Or maybe you feel as if something is happening.

You want to follow the clues.

You want to make those connections.

You want to find out what is going on.

I think that's one of the reasons why

detective movies or

detective TV shows are so popular, because it is interesting seeing how

a terrible act or horrible situation can be solved

just by looking for clues.

And I'm sure you've done it.

I'm sure you've seen something and you've tried to find out more about it.

We we can say that you are looking for clues,

so here are some phrases you might use when we are talking about trying to make connections.

Or maybe you are trying to find out what is really going on.

We can say that you try to spot things.

So this is an interesting

I suppose you would say it was a verb to spot to go spotting.

You are looking.

You are searching.

So if you spot something it means you see a certain thing to go looking.

You go spotting.

You try to see, you try to find,

you try to spot something.

The action of noticing something.

If you are looking for clues, quite often you will search and you will try to find that thing.

Of course, if you notice something, it means oh,

you observe a certain thing occurring, something happens, something

is happening.

You notice something.

If you are trying to find

what is going on, if you are trying to search for clues, you might have to observe or watch.

Not a very exciting thing to do.

You might have to look for clues.

Again, not an easy thing to do.

Maybe you believe that your husband is cheating on you.

Perhaps you think your wife

is seeing another man.

You start to look

for clues, things that might help you

in your search for answers,

to search for something that stands out,

to find clues, something that stands out.

Something that is clear or obvious.

Something that stands out.

Quite often when we watch these amazing detective shows, quite often there are things that the person investigating will notice.

They will notice something.

That is one of the reasons why I like watching Columbo.

It is a very good TV show

to investigate

the action of making inquiries,

to know who's around, if you are searching for clues,

if you are looking for something we can say that you know is around.

You are looking rather like a dog.

So imagine a dog trying to find a bone.

It will often use its nose.

And of course we can do the same thing. Not literally.

We are not literally sniffing or trying to find things using our nose,

but you can use it as an interesting phrasal verb you nose around.

You are searching for clues.

Of course you can hunt for anything, to look, to search, to forage.

You are trying to find something you hunt for, something to seek or seek out.

Seek means search.

You are seeking something you are looking for something you are trying to seek out a certain thing.

Of course,

if you are investigating something, maybe a serious crime,

maybe you are trying to find out whether your partner is cheating on you.

You look for clues, you look for connections.

So when we are trying to find out what is happening,

quite often we will try to find connections, things that seem to go together.

Maybe a certain person was in a certain place at a certain time.

Also, another person was in the same place at the same time.

Were they together?

Were they seeing each other?

Is there a connection?

Then?

You can follow the trail.

You follow the trail.

You try to piece together all of the clues,

the things you are trying to find, the clues, the things that you find or see.

And then you have to put those things together to see if they fit.

You can also

join the dots if you are trying to see if something has a connection,

or maybe more than one thing has a connection, you try to join the dots.

That means that you are trying to see how those things occurred.

Are those things connected to each other?

Do they have some sort of connection?

And if they do, you will try to follow the dots to see if something is happening.

You might put two and two together

to come to a conclusion about something.

You make a conclusion, you come to a conclusion.

You put two and two together and hopefully you have

an answer.

You might put the pieces of the puzzle together.

So rather like putting the pieces together, you put the pieces of the puzzle together.

I'm sure you've

in the past tried doing a jigsaw puzzle, putting those pieces of the jigsaw together.

It's a little bit like investigating a crime or trying to find out what is going on in a certain situation.

You have to put

the pieces of the puzzle together,

and of course you can use your nose.

As I mentioned a few moments ago, to use your nose is to

look around to ask questions.

You try and find out what is going on, but by using your nose, not literally.

We use that figuratively

to make connections between events.

By looking at the clues you put the pieces together through questioning and making inquiries.

Some people will hire an investigator to look for clues

they use subterfuge and close observation.

Now there is an interesting word subterfuge

is an interesting word that means to do something undercover

without other people seeing what you are doing, you do something secretly.

Oh, oh,

there is some subterfuge going on under my table.

So they are looking for clues.

They are trying to find out what is going on.

And that is the reason why I love those types of detective show,

when they are trying to put all of those clues together to try and work out what really happened.

A journalist might investigate by going undercover, so quite often, and this has happened a lot over the years.

A person who is investigating something, they are trying to find answers,

they will go under cover, they will infiltrate, they will blend in.

Maybe they will join a company and pretend to be one of their employees.

Maybe they will join a criminal gang and work undercover.

Of course a police officer can also work undercover as well.

A person might be followed or take called to tail someone is to follow them.

You are following someone.

You are tailing that person.

The word tail is often used in American English to mean follow.
