Today I'm going to test you on your grammar

and I want you to comment below with your score out of 10.

و أريد منكم أن تكتبوا تعليقا مع مجموع نقاطكم من 10

And be honest and truthful

و كونوا صريحين وصادقين

because it's very unlikely that you'll get 10 out of 10.

لانه احتمال بعيد ان تحصلوا 10 على 10

So, get out a pen and paper,

أخرجوا قلم و ورقة

write down the answers,

وسجلوا الاجابات

and if you get any wrong, don't worry,

واذا اقترفتم أي خطأ, لا تقلقوا

There's an easy way to work out

توجد طريقة سهلة لتتدربوا عليها

if you need to use who or whom.

اذا كنتم تريدون استعمال who او whom

In the sentence, if he or she fits, use who,

في جملة, اذا كانت he او she تلائم, استعملوا who

and if him or her fits, use whom.

اذا كانت him او her تلائم , استعملوا whom

John saw whom last week?

جون رأى من الاسبوع الفائت؟

Number two, our politicians want to, change.

ثانيا , سياسيونا يريدون ’’’ التغيير

Our politicians want to, change.

Is it affect or effect?

هل هي affect أم effect

It is effect with an E. (dings)

انها effect

This is because to effect change is a set verb phrase.

لان احداث التغيير هو عبارة فعلية محددة

Our politicians want to effect change.

سياسيونا يريدون احداث التغيير

Number three, did you see the books, I bought her?

ثالثاة هل رأيت الكتب’’’ اشتريتها لها؟

Did you see the books, I bought her?

Is it that or is it which?

هل هي that او which

(ticking)

It is that. (dings)

انها that

Because that is used in defining clauses.

لأن that تستعمل لتحديد الشروط

Did you see the books that I bought her?

هل رأيت الكتب التي اشتريتها لها؟

Number four, neither of us, intelligent enough.

رابعا, لا أحد منا ’’’ ذكي كفاية

Neither of us, intelligent enough.

Is it are or is?

هل هي are او is

(ticking)

It is is. (dings)

انها is

And this is because if you think about it

لانه اذا فكرت فيها

like neither one of us is intelligent enough.

انها مثل ولا واحد منا ذكي كفاية

One goes with is 'cause it's singular.

واحد تستعمل مع is لانه مفرد

Neither of us is intelligent enough.

ولا واحد منا ذكي كفاية

Number five, bag is that?

خامسا, ’’’’ هذه الحقيبة

Bag is that?

’’’’ هذه الحقيبة

Is it whose or who's, they sound the same?

هل هي whoseاو who's

Is it who's with an apostrophe or whose with an S-E?

(ticking)

It is whose with an S-E. (dings)

انها whose

This is because whose S-E is a possessive pronoun

لان whose ضمير الملكية

and who's with an apostrophe is a contraction of who is.

و who's هي تقليص who is

Whose bag is that?

لمن هذه الحقيبة ؟

Number six, I wish I, studied harder!

سادسا, اتمنى لو ’’’’ درست بجد

I wish I, studied harder!

Is it had or is it would have?

هل هي had او would have؟

It is had. (dings)

انها had

I wish I had studied harder!

اتمنى لو انني كنت قد درست بجد

I wish I would have is a common mistake

اتمنى لو كنت سافعل هو خطا شائع

made by speakers of American English

مقترف من طرف المتحدثين بالانجليزية الامريكية

but it's not grammatically correct.

ولكنه نحويا خاطئ

Number seven, I think I need to, down and rest.

سابعا , اعتقد انني احتاج ان ’’’ و استريح

I think I need to, down and rest.

It is lay or is it lie?

هل هي اطرح ام اتمدد؟

(ticking)

It's lie. (dings)

انها اتمدد

To lie down means to recline

lie down تعني الاتكاء

and to lay down means to establish,

و lay down تعني ان تضع شيئا ما

like a rule or something.

مثل مسطرة او اي شيء

To lay down the law.

وضع القانون

I need to lie down and rest.

احتاج الى ان اتكئ و استريح

Number eight, you can stand between Will and.

ثامنا , تستطيع الوقوف بين ويل و’’’’

You can stand between Will and.

Is it I or is it me?

هل هي انا ام انا

(ticking)

It's me. (dings)

انها انا

A preposition such as between

حرف جر مثل بين

should be followed by an objective pronoun like me, him, us.

يجب ان يتبع بضمير مثل انا, هو, نحن

I, she, he, et cetera, are subjective pronouns.

انا هي , هو .. ضمائر شخصية

You can stand between Will and me.

تستطيع الوقوف بين ويل وانا

Number nine, I want, people in my kitchen!

تاسعا, أريد اشخاصا ’’’’ في مطبخي

I want, people in my kitchen!

Is it fewer or is it less?

هلا هي اقل اقل ام اقل

(ticking)

It's fewer. (dings)

انها اقل

Fewer is correct because people is a plural countable noun.

اقل هي الصحيحة لان الناس هو اسم جمع قابل للعد

I want fewer people in my kitchen!

اريد اشخاصا اقل في مطبخي

And the last one, number ten.

واخر واحدة , عاشرا

To, were you talking?

ل’’’ كنت تتحدث

To, where you talking?

Is it who or whom?

هل هي who او whom

(ticking)

It is whom. (dings)

انها whom

To whom were you talking?

لمن كنت تتحدث

When you use to with who at the beginning of a question,

عندما تستعمل to مع من في بداية السؤال

you use whom.

تستعمل whom
