Hi everybody, welcome to  another Full English lesson.

Before I begin I would like to  give you a little brainteaser,

What word can be used alongside  the following five words?

As you know I love food.

Como saben me encanta la comida.

And I couldn’t resist mentioning  an expression that is used

Y no pude resistir mencionar una expresión que se usa

before we think about something we’ve just heard.

antes de pensar en algo que acabamos de escuchar.

The phrase is…‘Food for thought’.

La frase es... 'Alimento para el pensamiento'.

A thing heard or read that  resonates or lingers in your mind,

Una cosa escuchada o leída que resuena o permanece en su mente,

or has the possibility to  change your view of something

o que tiene la posibilidad de cambiar su visión de algo,

might be described as ‘food for thought’.

podría describirse como "alimento para el pensamiento".

“That speech of yours has given  me lots of food for thought.”

"Ese discurso tuyo me ha dado mucho que pensar".

The thing said has given you something  new or challenging to think about.

Lo dicho te ha dado algo nuevo o desafiante en lo que pensar.

It has fed some new information into your brain.

Ha introducido nueva información en su cerebro.

It has made you think deeply  about a certain idea or topic.

Te ha hecho pensar profundamente sobre una determinada idea o tema.

You might even change your opinion because of it.

Incluso podrías cambiar de opinión por eso.

That new idea or opinion has given you  something to chew over in your mind.

Esa nueva idea u opinión te ha dado algo para meditar en tu mente.

It has given you some ‘food for thought’.

Te ha dado algo de "alimento para el pensamiento".

Can you see what is behind me?

¿Puedes ver lo que hay detrás de mí?

It is something that is hidden  away, so it might be hard to see.

Es algo que está oculto, por lo que puede ser difícil de ver.

Oh there it is.

Ahí está.

This is a nest box.

Esta es una caja nido.

It is an artificial space  where bird eggs can be nurtured

Es un espacio artificial donde se pueden criar huevos de aves

until the chicks growing inside  them are ready to hatch out.

hasta que los polluelos que crecen dentro de ellos estén listos para salir del cascarón.

So this nest box will allow a pair  of birds to add their own bedding,

Por lo tanto, esta caja nido permitirá que un par de pájaros agreguen su propia ropa de cama

such as grass and moss to the inside of the box.

, como hierba y musgo, al interior de la caja.

The word nest can be used in many ways.

La palabra nido se puede usar de muchas maneras.

To hide something away in a  safe place as a verb is nest.

Esconder algo en un lugar seguro como verbo es anidar.

You nest; you place something  away for safe keeping.

Tú anidas; coloca algo lejos para su custodia.

You can have a nest egg, which is a sum of  money that is saved over a number of years.

Puede tener ahorros, que es una suma de dinero que se ahorra durante varios años.

The money is often invested  so as to gather interest.

El dinero a menudo se invierte para recaudar intereses.

You want your money to be worth more  in the future for when you retire.

Quiere que su dinero valga más en el futuro para cuando se jubile.

So a nest egg is something that  will be used at a later date.

Entonces, un nido de ahorros es algo que se usará en una fecha posterior.

A large quantity or number of animals living in  a certain location can be described as a nest.

Una gran cantidad o número de animales que viven en un lugar determinado se puede describir como un nido.

A collection of furniture that belongs together  

Una colección de muebles que van juntos

and is easy to pack away and  store can be described as a nest.

y son fáciles de empaquetar y almacenar puede describirse como un nido.

For example, you can have a nest of tables.

Por ejemplo, puede tener un nido de tablas.

All the different sized tables  can be store inside each other.

Todas las mesas de diferentes tamaños se pueden guardar unas dentro de otras.

A place where a person likes to rest and  relax so as to feel cosy and safe is a nest.

Un lugar donde a una persona le gusta descansar y relajarse para sentirse cómoda y segura es un nido.

Hopefully soon there will be a family  of birds nesting inside this nest box.

Esperemos que pronto haya una familia de pájaros anidando dentro de esta caja nido.

A pair of birds will build a nest together  and raise their own brood of chicks.

Un par de pájaros construirán un nido juntos y criarán su propia cría de polluelos.

I wonder what type of bird  will be living in there.

Me pregunto qué tipo de pájaro vivirá allí.

Could it be a pair of blue tits perhaps?

¿Podría ser un par de tetas azules tal vez?

We will have to wait and see.

It’s time to take a look at another buzzword.

Es hora de echar un vistazo a otra palabra de moda.

A buzzword is a word or phrase that  is often used during a certain period,

Una palabra de moda es una palabra o frase que se usa a menudo durante un período determinado

or is generally popular.

o que es popular en general.

Today’s buzzword is… ‘Generic’

La palabra de moda de hoy es... 'Genérico'

The word ‘generic’ can be used  as both an adjective and a noun.

La palabra 'genérico' se puede usar tanto como adjetivo como sustantivo.

As an adjective; ‘generic’ means to belong to a  group with no precise or exact classification.

Como adjetivo; 'genérico' significa pertenecer a un grupo sin una clasificación precisa o exacta.

The thing in question is named by its group,

La cosa de que se trata se nombra por su grupo,

without naming a singular characteristic.

sin nombrar una característica singular.

We are using its generic name. The overall  characteristics are being identified generically,

Estamos usando su nombre genérico. Las características generales se identifican de forma genérica,

as belonging to a certain group or ‘genus’.

como pertenecientes a un determinado grupo o "género".

Certain types of medicine with no clear brand  name are often referred to as ‘generic’.

Ciertos tipos de medicamentos que no tienen un nombre de marca claro a menudo se denominan "genéricos".

Something with no clear  individual identity is generic.

Algo sin una identidad individual clara es genérico.

As an insult, a person might  describe an uninspiring idea  

Como insulto, una persona podría describir una idea poco inspiradora

that lacks originality or thought as ‘generic’.

que carece de originalidad o pensamiento como "genérica".

As a noun, ‘generic’ refers  to an unbranded product

Como sustantivo, "genérico" se refiere a un producto sin marca

and is normally associated with types of medicine.

y normalmente se asocia con tipos de medicamentos.

Can you see what I’m doing over there?

I'm sitting on the fence.

Estoy sentado en la valla.

I am enjoying the view and  taking in some fresh air.

Estoy disfrutando de la vista y tomando un poco de aire fresco.

There is a phrase that exists  in English which refers  

Hay una frase que existe en inglés que se refiere

to the position in which I’m sitting right now.

a la posición en la que estoy sentado en este momento.

To; ‘sit on the fence’. This phrase  refers to a person who cannot,

A; 'Sientate en la cerca'. Esta frase se refiere a una persona que no puede

or will not express their own opinion or take  any particular side in a dispute or argument.

o no quiere expresar su propia opinión ni tomar parte en una disputa o argumento.

To remain neutral without  expressing your personal opinion  

Permanecer neutral sin expresar su opinión personal

can be described as ‘sitting on the fence’.

puede describirse como "sentarse en la valla".

You might be willing to listen to the discussion,  but you are unwilling to get involved directly.

Es posible que esté dispuesto a escuchar la discusión, pero no está dispuesto a involucrarse directamente.

We often use this expression negatively  

A menudo usamos esta expresión negativamente

when describing a person who seems  unwilling to express their own thoughts.

cuando describimos a una persona que parece no estar dispuesta a expresar sus propios pensamientos.

“You two can argue all day, but if you  don’t mind I would rather sit on the fence.”

"Ustedes dos pueden discutir todo el día, pero si no les importa, prefiero sentarme en la cerca".

“There you go again, avoiding the  problem by sitting on the fence.”

"Ahí vas de nuevo, evitando el problema sentándote en la cerca".

“You will have to get involved at some  point; you can’t keep sitting on the fence.”

“Tendrás que involucrarte en algún momento; no puedes seguir sentado en la valla”.

To sit on the fence is to remain  neutral. You don’t want to get involved.

Sentarse en la cerca es permanecer neutral. No quieres involucrarte.

You would rather keep your opinion to yourself.

Prefieres guardarte tu opinión.

You abstain, withhold, hold back, decline.

Te abstienes, retienes, reprimes, declinas.

You keep your feelings to yourself by not  expressing an opinion, decision or choice.

Te guardas tus sentimientos al no expresar una opinión, decisión o elección.

You have chosen to ‘sit on the fence’.

Has elegido "sentarte en la cerca".

You can have a ‘bean bag’,  which is a type of chair.

You can have a bean stalk, which is  the main support body of a bean plant.

Puede tener un tallo de frijol, que es el cuerpo de soporte principal de una planta de frijol.

Then there is ‘bean counter’, which  is a slang term for ‘accountant’.

Luego está el "contador de frijoles", que es un término del argot para "contador".

Then there is ‘runner bean’,  which is a type of creeping plant.

And of course there is ‘baked bean’,

which is a delicious type of food that  goes well with tomato sauce on toast.
