We are coming to you live today to celebrate 18 years of doing all of this on YouTube.

My video, English lessons, and of course my live streams.

I hope you will stay with us today.

Oh my goodness.

I wasn't expecting you to appear so quickly. Hi, everybody.

This is Mr. Duncan in England. How are you today?

Are you okay? I hope so.

Are you feeling happy today?

I hope you have a spring in your step and a smile on your face today.

Because we are together with you.

Very unusual.

I know what you're going to say, Mr. Duncan. Why are you here on Thursday?

Because it is very strange. We don't normally see you on Thursday.

Well, I'm here for a very special reason.

Because today is the anniversary of my YouTube channel being created many, many years ago.

One afternoon I was wondering what shall I do to pass away my free time?

And then I decided to create my own YouTube channel on what was then a very new social media platform.

Way back in 2006.

So that is when I created this YouTube channel a long, long time ago.

The world was a very different place in 2006.

That's all I can say. And here we are

18 years later and I'm still doing it.

I've had such a busy month. I've been producing lots of new content.

I've been doing lots of new live streams.

All I can say is October has been a very busy month.

Fortunately, we have November just around the corner and of course November

is always a quiet, peaceful, relaxing month.

Nothing dramatic will happen in November, so I think we will all

have the opportunity to take it easy during November and have a lovely rest.

Nothing too dramatic is going to happen during November

as far as I'm aware.

Anyway, if you know different please let me know.

Can I first of all say happy Diwali to all those celebrating today?

So not only is it the anniversary of my YouTube channel, it's also Diwali.

So happy Diwali to all those celebrating in India and across the world as well.

In many parts of the world, that particular festival is always celebrated.

So Happy Diwali to you!

If you are celebrating the festival of lights.

Of course, today lots of things happening.

I have the anniversary.

I also have to mention.

That we have Mr. Steve coming a little bit later on.

And this is no ordinary day to day because of course it is that day

when everyone runs around the streets trying to scare their neighbours.

Today it is Halloween.

Did it get colder in here or is it just me?

I think it's just you, Mr. Steve.

And there he is.

He will be with us later on. Mr. Steve will be joining us.

It is Halloween.

You might notice over there in the corner of my studio. Just there.

If you look, there is a little flashing pumpkin.

Lots of things happen during Halloween.

I have to say, here in the UK we don't

celebrate Halloween in quite the same way as they do in the United States.

I think it is fair to say that we don't do it quite as much.

We do it a little bit, but not a lot.

Of course, there are many traditions connected to Halloween.

First of all, many people will dress up as scary creatures in their specially made costumes.

Mr. Steve is here today.

Although I have to say,

we did have a rather dramatic moment a couple of days ago

because we decided to go off to a place in North Wales by the sea.

We don't often go to the seaside, so we decided to do it.

And Mr. Steve decided to go for a swim.

He took a dip.

So if you take a dip, it means you are going for a swim.

You will take a dip.

Maybe you will take a dip in the swimming pool.

Or perhaps you will take a dip in the ocean.

So there are many ways of expressing the action of going for a swim.

So Mr. Steve went into the sea.

I thought he had vanished.

I thought he had decided to swim away to another place.

What happened to Mr. Steve?

Did he make it out of the sea without having to be rescued by a lifeboat?

And did he have to have the kiss of life?

And who would volunteer for such a strenuous task?

Find out about that later on.

As I said, it is Halloween today, the day when everyone decides to scare each other.

Well, you might scare your neighbours. Maybe a friend or relative.

Today is All Hallows Eve and

there are lots of things that people do besides dressing up in costumes.

People will also do other things as well.

They might display something outside their house, something to scare the neighbours, perhaps.

So there are other things that people do normally at Halloween.

Every year we have it on the 31st of October.

But of course, the big thing that I want to talk about today, it is a pretty big subject.

The anniversary of this YouTube channel being created.

Today we are celebrating 18 years right here on YouTube.

English addict.

And, of course, my YouTube channel today celebrating 18 years on YouTube.

Okay. Can you believe it?

Can you believe I've been doing this for 18 years?

I have to be honest with you.

I have to be honest.

If I can be completely, 100% honest with you.

I can't believe I've been doing this for 18 years as well.

Lots of things to talk about. Today we have Mr.

Steve coming up in a few moments in his scary corner because of course it is Halloween today.

We will also see what happened when Mr. Steve tried to come out

of the water

during our little trip to the coast.

Hello Mr. Duncan. Hello.

Wonderful viewers, beautiful viewers, loyal viewers from across the globe.

I'm feeling effervescent today. Mr. Duncan, as you.

What did you describe me as?

Feeling as, effervescent. Effervescent? Yes.

I'm foaming at the mouth.

Well, something.

Something effervescent is clear and sparkly, so I do.

I do like that. So.

So you do look very clean and sparkly energy. Yes.

Why is it a scary corner?

Why have you described me as being in a scary corner? Because. Well, if you look on your monitor.

Oh, I see what you mean. Yes.

Oh, one of the things I love about Mr.

Steve is there is a giant monitor showing what is happening, but but Steve, very rarely looks at it.

I like to look at the camera.

I like to look at my viewers rather than over there at the monitor, see if it was sort of above the camera.

I could see it. Maybe it needs repositioning, Mr. Duncan. No, a job for another day. Maybe.

I can tell you now that that camera is in the most perfect position.

And also your monitor as well.

They are.

And I'm the absolute the absolute 100% best position now, we went away the other day.

We decided to go to the coast.

We went away to a lovely place called Hollick, which is kind of on the north coast of Wales, a wonderful place.

We had a very interesting

drive to Hollick, didn't we, Steve?

Because, you decided to take a very special route.

Well, this is the problem when you follow your satnav.

Yeah.

This is the problem that, lorry drivers get into and they follow satnav, and then the satnav takes them down roads

which aren't suitable for the lorries.

Well, we had a similar experience, in that we ended up on some roads

which, let's just say probably weren't suitable for, us to go on.

We should have stuck to the main route.

So all the sat nav, you see was taking me on the most direct route.

But in Wales you get lots and lots of very narrow roads,

which are really designed for access for the farmers to the, the sheep fields. So.

Yeah.

Yeah. Anyway, okay, I've got some footage here.

So this is what we actually recorded.

So there, there we go.

And this is us driving down some of the most, well, the narrowest lanes we've ever actually been on in the UK.

And you can see the beautiful surroundings.

We have the Welsh countryside all around us, but we were literally in the middle of nowhere.

There was no internet connection, there was no 4G or 5G or even 3G connection.

But you can see going along the road, that particular road was only wide enough to take one car,

so if anything was coming the other way, we would have had some rather difficult moments.

But at least one of the things we did do Steve, we were able to enjoy

some of the wonderful landscape around us because everything at the moment is looking well.

It looks as if autumn has arrived as we went along some very interesting roads.

But as Steve just said, the roads were not really designed for lots and lots of traffic,

especially traffic that was going both ways because it wasn't that wide.

And you will see in a moment this is the one that Steve loved. Look at this.

Now this was my favourite moment. Steve.

I know it was, yeah.

The problem was, I think you were all right if you were in a farm vehicle.

Yeah, but, if we had to, if there were passing places, little you can see little areas there

where they call them passing places for, you have to wait while another vehicle, so that you can pass.

But there weren't very many of them.

And if, for example, where we are now, if we were to have met somebody coming up that hill where would we have gone?

Because, well, we would have ended up. There is a passing space there. See, we had nowhere to go.

And what you can't tell from that video is that that particular road is only as wide as the car.

So we could just about fit on that road.

So if anything was coming the other way, we would have had, let's just say we would have had a slight spot

of bother to have a if you have a spot of bother, it means you have a difficult situation.

We call it a spot of bother.

Yes, but it was absolutely, absolutely spectacular.

I couldn't really look at the view because if I had concentrated on the view and not on the driving,

we might have gone down the side of that hill.

Yes.

Giovanni says, what about a Ford Mustang down that road?

See, the problem was that would have been great, but being only two wheel drive,

it would have been a bit of an issue, I think, had we, had to move over into the, onto the side.

Anyway, now now we are on the normal road. So this is going towards the coast.

And we were now back on the what I call the the road.

That is normal.

But you will see some lovely sights even at this point.

We saw some lovely sights now I think.

I'm not sure, Steve, but this might be Snowdonia.

Or at least parked. Yes, it is Mr. Duncan, part of Snowdonia. Look at that.

So that is actually the highest point one of the highest points across Wales.

And I would even say England as well.

It is a lovely place and this is where we arrived. Steve.

We arrived in a place called Harlech and there is the famous castle, a very old fortress and of course we went down to the sea.

Mr. Steve

was feeling rather adventurous because Steve went into the sea.

I don't know if you watched the video we made a couple of days ago, but we were actually by the seaside.

Mr. Steve went into the sea.

But I suppose the big question was how did Mr. Steve get out?

How did he come out of the sea?

Well, for those who are wondering what happened after I stopped recording the other day,

this is what happened next.

Oh, Mr.

Steve, all I can say is you are a much braver person than me.

I don't think I have to say.

I don't think I could do that.

I could not go into the sea like that.

Well, Louis says, you shouldn't take a swim at your age into cold water.

Well, you're probably right, Lewis.

But that's what.

In fact, that's what you said, wasn't it, Steve?

Well, I was a bit concerned because, I mean, I always do go in the sea,

when we're by the seaside, wherever we go, whenever we've been on holiday, I was going to say,

And at this time of the year, the water is almost at its warmest because it's been heated up through the summer.

So, yeah, I was a little concerned because you can get a heart attack if you go into cold water.

But I was reasonably confident that that would be all right.

But, I, I if I felt at any point ill, I would have come straight out.

I didn't, so I stayed in. I was only in that about ten minutes. But yes, I do.

And there is a risk that you can immerse yourself in cold water like that and get a heart attack.

But luckily I'm here to tell the tale.

I did have 1 or 2 moments where I suddenly lost sight of Steve.

He seemed to vanish into thin air and then suddenly I could see him again waving.

I think he was waving.

He could have been drowning.

Of course, there are many things you should not do before going into the water or into the sea or swimming pool.

In fact, one of them, of course, is eating, isn't it, Steve?

Yeah. You shouldn't eat.

Apparently, before you go into any water, it's always advised because you can get cramp.

And the thing about that, that sea as well, is that, even though I went out a very long way, it's incredibly shallow.

So at no point, even though I went quite a long way out, I was the water was never.

Yeah, I was never the point where I couldn't my feet couldn't touch the bottom.

In fact, if I stood up at any point, the water came up to here.

Yeah.

Because it's a very, very gradual group gradually gets deeper over a long period of time

because some seas I've been in, you go in and suddenly it drops down and you're out of your depth straightaway.

But not on this particular beach.

It's a slow decline in as you walk. As you walk, you slowly go down. Yeah.

So I was never I was always able to put my feet on the bottom, and I didn't want to go out of my depth.

As you say, if you go out of your depth, it means you go into water, which is

higher than yourself.

And I wasn't going to do that because that would have been risky, because I didn't know what the tide was doing.

In fact, there is a phrase that relates to that a person might go out of their depth.

So if you are out of your depth, it means you are doing something that you are unable to do.

You don't have the skills or the training to do it, so you are trying to do something

that you are not qualified to do, or something or something you you can't handle.

So it is a thing that you are trying to do, but it is beyond your capability.

You are out of your debt. Yeah.

So literally you can be out of your depth in the sea, or figuratively, as Mr.

Duncan says, your attempt to do something which you haven't got the necessary skills to do.

For example, if somebody said to me, will you do a presentation on, on on Excel spreadsheets?

I would say, and no, I don't want to do that because I would be out of my depth.

In other words, I don't have sufficient, sufficient knowledge to do that particular, presentation.

Yes, but it could be anything. Could be anything.

Can I just answer some questions about those roads and on the live chat, Mr.

Duncan?

Giovanni, I haven't got a Ford Mustang.

But, that would have been, quite good to take the car down there.

Although I think it would have suffered, with it being only rear wheel drive.

Mind you, my car's only rear wheel drive.

Yes, it's called a single track road.

Giovanni, I somebody asked that question, but Maurizio, has answered it

and said that he used to drive, in Scotland down single track roads as well.

Yeah.

So those roads there, those are not like main roads.

No, those are just really for.

Their direct routes to places

that you would only really farmers would use because in Scotland there main thing you have, there is lots of sheep

and over vast distances the sheep all graze on the hills because the land isn't much use for anything else.

You can't grow crops on it.

And so the farmers use those single track roads to go from the farms to wherever that that the sheep are.

So probably I shouldn't have used that road.

We were lucky the other traffic wasn't on it.

There is a route to get to where we wanted to go.

It would have taken 20 minutes longer, but it would have kept us on the main road.

Yeah, but, I suppose exciting.

I suppose you would describe them as access roads.

So maybe for getting from one place to another within the local area, we often describe those sorts of roads, access roads.

But to be honest with you,

it was kind of

terrifying and exciting hit the same time, I will be honest.

So there were a few moments where we weren't sure what was going to happen next, especially if something was coming the opposite way.

We would have had quite a few problems anyway. We we made it.

We made it to that.

We made it

through all of our adventures on the beach, including Mr.

Steve going into the ocean and having a splash around.

Can I just add as well that,

if we had met

a Welsh farmer along those roads, I don't think he would have been too pleased to give way to an English person.

Yeah. I won't go any further.

Let's just say he wouldn't have been too pleased to see us along that road.

It isn't.

It is interesting to note that for some reason. Well, there is a good reason.

A very good reason. The Welsh don't like

English people very much.

So there is a kind of a a long running feud, I suppose we could say,

because many of the Welsh, of course, were cast out from England and that's why they, they live in Wales.

So there is a kind of historic thing that goes back many, many, I suppose you, you might say centuries, but certainly the background,

the background of the relationship between the British or should I say the English and the Welsh is not great. No.

That yeah, it's a bit like the Scottish people as well.

They, I mean, the Scottish people

wouldn't say they dislike the English, but because of historical reasons, battles that took place in the past,

between the Welsh and the English and the Scots and the English.

Then there are there, and it just goes to show how these silly, you know, it's passed down through generations.

I mean, we're all equal now.

It's the UK although Scotland and Wales and now what you call devolved countries.

So they do have their own parliaments which they didn't used to have until relatively recently.

But nevertheless these historical hatreds remain and it's certain ni much more evident with the Welsh than it is with the Scottish.

And I remember in the 1980s, even the late, the late 1970s and 1980s, there was,

there was quite the it did become quite what's the word I'm looking for fierce.

This, this strange hatred

for the English because the people were, were buying houses and property in Wales and they were English.

So English people were buying property in Wales and their houses were being burnt down.

Yes. That's how serious that became.

So you can see and I think that still exists now.

But but I don't think it is quite as bad as as it was a few years ago.

There are many English people now living in Wales, and I assume they are having a rather nice time.

It depends where you go in Wales.

If it's South Wales, they're very cosmopolitan.

If you go into more sort of mid Wales, then that's the much more sort of traditional Welsh villages.

And I remember years ago, going to Wales with some friends, we cycled there, which I used to do when I was younger.

And we went into a pub in the middle of nowhere in Wales, and this is very common.

I don't know if it, I think it's still is that it's sort of a village pub in Wales and you walk in as a British person

and literally you can be people will it will go quiet and they will ask you either to leave or go into another room.

That has actually happened to me.

And it has happened to friends of mine as well, because they just don't want you in there.

But anyway, we had a lovely time.

On the whole, then British people are welcome because English English

people are really welcome because it is a probably their greatest source of revenue for the economy.

Certainly one of the greatest is tourism from from British people going there, English, English or Scottish or whatever, going to Wales. So,

you know,

we bring a lot of income to the area, but you've just got to be respectful.

I suppose you will see all the signs in Wales.

We'll have the Welsh language first and then British will be second.

And in fact, in some cases you won't even see any English.

But I kind of, I don't think that's actually a problem, because if you're saying that that's your identity

and that's what you want to do and that's your part of the landmass, then I suppose that's all right.

But but it is true that there can be certain types of conflict, certainly between the Welsh and the English, a very patriotic and,

like road signs.

They'll be in Welsh first and then English second.

Yeah. It's, and that's all over Wales.

Which you would think probably for a lot of you watching, you would think that was quite strange because it's the UK.

You think it will be the same, but in fact it isn't. You don't get that in Scotland, I don't think.

But you certainly get that in Wales, a very, very patriotic and want to keep that culture, which is completely understandable.

So they see the

English people going in as, as trying to dilute their culture and destroy it.

So it very much in the schools in Wales then everyone has to speak Welsh very well.

She's like the first language, English is the second, I think in some places probably. Yeah.

But but yeah, it's Alice, Alice, Alessandra Alexander says, do the Welsh really talk Welsh?

Yes they do.

In fact, when you go into the shops like we did in Harlequin,

the everyone was there all speaking Welsh, all the local people were speaking Welsh at somebody.

And when we went to a tea shop, people, if they're Welsh, they're talking, they talk Welsh.

They do very much do that. Yeah.

Although some people say they only do it when the British, when the English people are there.

Yeah. That's that, that's but that's just a stupid thing to say there isn't it.

I know, but it's a but they do very much, it's very, very strong.

But again it depends where you are in Wales. Yes.

I don't think there's any problem if you're in Wales and you're Welsh and you speak Welsh, I don't think there's a problem.

I think it's just sometimes I think English people, we are the worst sometimes with other nations

we expect everyone to speak English wherever we go in the world.

And that this is this is a common criticism of the English because we often assume when we go abroad to any country,

especially around Europe, that everyone around us is going to speak our language.

So, I suppose a good example, Steve, is Spain, where there are many people who've moved to Spain to actually live,

but they often complain that there are certain types of food that they can't get.

Or maybe sometimes people refuse to speak English to them and they get annoyed.

And I always find that rather funny because you are in someone else's country, so

sometimes you you have to be careful not to come across or to seem arrogant.

But I would you say, for example, if I wanted to move a live, to move to another country, you see,

I would have no trouble moving thinking of moving to France or to Italy or to Spain, a huge expat community in Spain.

But I would never buy a house and live in Wales.

I just wouldn't do it.

Okay, Steve, because I know that a large proportion of the local people would not.

We would, it would, would, would not be very friendly towards me.

Depends where in Wales you go. Yeah.

If you, if you go to near Cardiff, that'll be fine because that's the capital.

But if you were to get a nice country cottage in the middle of Wales,

I think you would, in fact, we know friends that move to Wales, from England.

They retired, moved to Wales.

He was English, she was half Welsh.

And they spent the next 20 years having feuds with neighbours and being treated really badly.

I think so, yeah.

I think that may have been slightly self-inflicted, to be honest.

But do we understand Welsh? No.

Only Welsh people would ever learn Welsh like Steve.

Okay, let's let's not turn it into.

No one else would learn Welsh. Yeah, apart from Welsh people.

Well, yeah, it's. Well, again,

they are Welsh. If they want to speak Welsh, let them know. Yeah.

I'm not saying they shouldn't. I'm not. Nobody's saying they should, but they shouldn't.

But so if you are well sure you are watching now and you are learning English.

Welcome.

Well, they do have to learn English in Wales. Yeah.

And of course,

a lot of people are learning English now around the world, which is going to.

Okay, Steve, are there sharks in the water? Says Giovanni.

There aren't,

but we sometimes get sort of species of sharks,

in British waters, but they're not sort of the man eating variety.

I don't think I've ever heard of anybody being attacked by a shark in the UK.

You might get jellyfish.

But not big ones. That would kill you.

I've never heard of anyone dying by being attacked by a sea creature in the UK.

Have you, Mr. Duncan,

I don't think.

I don't think so. The people die in in, in the sea in England. Because.

Because they they drown or they go when the tide, the tide is pulling them out of the currents.

And we don't we don't have we don't have, sea creatures that killed people on the on the English coast.

Fortunately, I like water.

Temperate temperatures 13.3 degrees as they test. Thank you for that.

So that's about the same temperatures it would come out of your tap,

in winter.

So yes, it wasn't freezing cold.

But it was, took me a while to get used to it.

Anyway, I know Mr. Duncan wants to move on.

Wow. And, so I think that's, fantastic.

So Vitus was, from the beginning as well.

So you were watching me when I was in China because 18 years ago

today, I was actually living in China, working as an English teacher,

and I decided to start a YouTube channel on this day whilst I was still living in China.

So I'm just wondering now, so you were watching when I was still in China, making some of my very early lessons,

some of my rather, I would say now not so good lessons

to be honest, the the quality and also the fact that I was a little bit nervous as well, doing it all those years ago.

I know it doesn't seem possible.

I know what you're going to say, Mr. Duncan. You can't be nervous.

We don't believe that. You could be nervous.

Everyone, everyone at some point can be nervous, especially when you are trying something new.

It is Halloween today, and I remember

a few years ago, I think it was actually way back in 2017.

You might not believe this, Steve, but way back in 2017,

we celebrated Halloween

and we decided to dress up in some costumes.

So this is what I was doing.

I was dressed as Frankenstein's monster.

So yes, it was 2017. That's incredible.

Wow. Now I do feel.

But do you want to see what Mr. Steve was wearing?

So here is Mr. Steve.

He looks like that guy, that rapper.

There is a rapper who looks like that.

We were going to dress up today, but I didn't think, we both thought that we couldn't top what we did in 2017.

And of course, the effort involved, because we've had a very busy week, we've been away.

We had a lovely little trip. We went all the way to the coast.

We had a very nice time.

Mr. Steve went for a swim in the sea, and he also had a rather nice time.

I still can't believe it.

It doesn't seem as if I've been doing it for all of those years.

But apparently, apparently, according to YouTube,

I have been doing it since 2006 and today is the birthday of my YouTube channel.

It's not the only that, video of the, the farmer there ploughing, his field,

which, of course they do at this time of the year, preparing the ground for sowing, the crops that will grow,

in the spring reminds me of, of a hymn that we always used to sing at school.

And sometimes if you went to church when I was younger, at this time of the year, they would.

They would get you to sing this hymn.

I will plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the ground.

I don't remember the rest of it, but we always used to sing that hymn.

It was a obviously a sort of a, sort of a celebration of, of of winter

And it is kind of, fitting that we have that mentioned, because you mention that and of course, the harvest has just taken place

and many religious celebrations, many special holidays occur at this time of year because it is the end of the harvest season.

So a lot of people, many years ago, they used to give thanks for their their wonderful abundant crop. Yes.

So it is.

That's why we have holidays I suppose.

We've decided to do it there. It's a nice central location in Europe.

A very easy place to get to for anyone who wants to fly to Paris.

So that is where it's going to be.

We can officially confirm that the English Addict Rendezvous

will be in Paris 2025 is where it will be.

We haven't got the date yet, but at least now you know

where it will be, so that will give you some idea.

I think it will be around June next year.

Yeah, we'll go for the probably the first or second week of June.

So we have nothing confirmed yet, but we are letting you know that it will be in Paris.

So don't book any holidays, you know, in the first or second week of June.

Yes, it's what we're telling you. Keep your whole month of June next year clear.

In fact, just keep the whole of 2025 clear.

Because here in the UK we also have lots of local celebrations in the communities around the UK celebrating Diwali as well.

Talking of celebrations, we have our own celebration today because

it is

an anniversary for me today.

Because it is the 18th anniversary of my YouTube channel.

Starting on this day.

This actual day, way back in 2006.

And of course, we do have Mr. Steve as well.

He is with us also.

We are talking about some words and phrases connected to anniversaries.

In a few moments.

So I think it would be rather suitable to do that, to be honest.

And Mr. Steve is with me now.

This is interesting thing because Mr.

Steve has not always been with me on my YouTube videos or my live streams.

Steve did not start appearing in my lessons until I think it was around

2008, when Steve started to pop up in my lessons.

And at first, when I first started doing my live streams in 2000 and, well, when was it?

2016 is when I started doing my live streams.

Steve also was not on there either, but over time, slowly

I started to introduce Steve and then lots of people kept asking, can we have more of Mr.

Steve?

So that is the reason why we have we have so much Mr.

Steve with us these days.

I'm sure some people want less.

But never mind.

But yes.

Well, I enjoyed coming on Mr.

Duncan because I'm, I feel as a part of, the channel, and, of course, made a lot of friends over the last few years,

not only just through the live chat, but also to meet in person, niche. I'm.

I'm sorry. We're not going to Prague.

Maybe we will one day.

But we just felt that that was

maybe a nice location that people could easily get to. Yeah.

And, well, Prague is very good.

A good suggestion as well.

In fact,

there are many places we would love to go to and do the rendezvous, but we also have to think about how other people are going to get there,

but also, well, many things when you think about it, you have to try to consider everything and everybody.

It isn't easy to do, but we try our best. But we hope that you can

We have some interesting words and ways of talking about the subject.

We are discussing quite a lot today.

Anniversaries, the anniversary and anniversary.

Well, first of all, the word relates to yearly something that happens every year.

So a yearly event or a yearly celebration, an annual celebration is an anniversary.

Of course, quite often we will define

anniversary as a special date marking a past event.

So something that happened in the past, something that happened on a specific or a certain date.

And then when that date comes around, you will celebrate it.

It will be the anniversary often marking something.

So when we talk about in this particular situation marking something, it means you are

commemorating a certain time, a certain moment.

You are marking a past event by celebrating it with its anniversary, a celebration or commemoration.

So there are two words we can use here, aren't there, Steve? We have celebration.

We often talk about an anniversary as being a celebration.

And of course, it can be a commemoration as well, even though those two words, those particular words are often grouped together.

However, quite often they are used in very different ways.

Different circumstances, aren't they? So what do you say? What do you want to say?

Yes, and we tend to use one rather than the other, that we're going to do that in a second.

Okay. That's fine.

So the anniversary can be a happy event quite often, Steve, we see an anniversary as a happy thing, a pleasant thing.

We often think of birthdays, although.

Next year.

I'm not looking forward to next year.

Do you know why?

I'm sure a few people know

there will be one birthday next year.

This will not be celebrated in any way whatsoever.

That's all I'm saying.

That is all I'm saying.

So a happy event. Birthdays.

Unless it's a very big one. Weddings as well.

So maybe a couple who's got married maybe the year before, or maybe five years before they will have an anniversary.

They will remember that particular date.

Maybe when the date comes around they will do something special.

I remember my parents sometimes, not always. Sometimes they would forget.

What about your parents, Steve?

Did they did they celebrate their anniversary?

They did, but they wouldn't say celebrate.

They used to. Of course,

there's lots of lots of, comedy written around, anniversaries.

And usually it's the the man who forgets the anniversary.

There's a lot of, sort of films.

A lot, a lot, a lot of times it's whenever you see anniversaries mention wedding anniversaries, it's usually the man is forgetting, isn't it?

In comedy?

Quite often I don't think the woman tends to forget, but I think the man sometimes can.

My parents, I yeah, I suppose they did.

I think when people have been together a very long time, their relationship changes and, particularly if certain events

have come along over the years to maybe spoil that relationship,

then maybe the inclination to want to celebrate that anniversary is reduced.

So I would say, yeah,

my parents would.

They would buy cards for each other, and maybe my father would buy my mother a box of chocolates.

Yeah,

or something like that. So, I would say that this is kind of traditional, isn't it? So.

So maybe a card maybe.

And you are right, Steve.

It is often the woman who remembers the wife who remembers the anniversary.

But the man will often forget all about it.

So I do think it it actually happens in real life. Definitely.

I think as time goes on, I mean, when you've been together, when you've just got married

and in the early years of your relationship, then maybe you would do more obvious things.

You might go on holiday, you might go out for a meal, you might celebrate in a more overt way,

obvious, overt way.

But when you've been together sort of 20, 30 years, then maybe you just give each other a kiss.

Yeah, by each other, a card.

So maybe there maybe there are certain anniversaries that are special.

Maybe your 10th anniversary, your 20th anniversary, or maybe, maybe your 50th 50.

Can you imagine

being married to the same person

for 50 years?

Well, yes.

And they've all got names associated with with precious stones, haven't they?

Or there's a silver wedding anniversary.

There's a golden. There's a ruby, platinum.

I can't remember which. Yeah.

They usually decades, they, So. Yes.

Maybe you would celebrate those in a more special way, just as you might celebrate

when you reached the age of 50, 60, 70, you would do the same, when your,

wedding anniversary is getting to be 20 years, 30 years, 40 years.

Yeah. But it it normally relates to the thing that you have to buy for your partner.

So maybe if it's I think it's 50 years.

50 years.

I think that might be gold anniversary.

50 golden anniversary, remember?

But then you give something to your partner, maybe a gold ring or something made of gold.

But it is. It is a lovely thought, isn't it?

Of course, any life event can be celebrated

as an anniversary, so you might be amazed at what people celebrate.

Maybe they have an animal, maybe their pet dog.

Or maybe I don't know anything. Really.

You can. You can actually have an anniversary for that particular thing.

So. So maybe the day when you, you bought your your pet dog, maybe you made a note of it,

or maybe when it was born, maybe you know exactly when your dog or your, your pet was actually born.

So some people do. They celebrate their their pets anniversary as well.

Your job?

You might. I'm not sure if people celebrate their job, to be honest.

Maybe the anniversary of finishing your job, maybe the anniversary of retiring from your job.

So maybe maybe that's better.

That's the sort of anniversary I think most people would enjoy, to be honest.

Look, yes, looking at Mr. Steve.

So the,

it'll be the third anniversary of the English addict meet ups next year.

Won't it'll be. That's an anniversary now.

And it looks like June is becoming the date when we, when we were, when we had that celebration.

And yeah.

So that anniversaries usually for things that are positive, things that, you want to celebrate in a good way.

Yeah.

And that are happy and, life affirming, shall we say.

So you might say that there are many things that you could celebrate as happening on a particular date or day.

And then, of course, we have commemoration, which is quite different.

So a lot of people do often forget that commemoration is not quite the same as celebration or anniversary.

They are quite different commemoration or to commemorate something, the action of actually doing that thing.

The commemoration is the noun to commemorate something is the verb, often a sad

or sombre anniversary will be described as a commemoration,

something that might be remembered, but it is not necessarily a pleasant thing.

Yes, like the, the ending of the Second World War, we commemorate that.

And, it could be a loved one that died.

You commemorate that, you would you would use the word commemoration.

It means that you are reflecting.

And, there will be, not celebrations as such, but there will be

maybe some formal way of marking that event, like we have,

marches, in London when on the, on the anniversary to commemorate the ending of the Second World, for example.

We do that every year.

And of course, we have the 80th anniversary coming up in a few days.

Yes. So that will be a commemoration.

There will be a commemoration service, church based service as well.

And, but yes, we commemorate Lockhart's various commemorate usually things that, as you say,

Maybe sad events,

or events that, you wouldn't normally you get fireworks out

and and, and, and have a party for, but you want to nevertheless Mark that period of time that has occurred.

Yeah.

It's quite often a battle or the, the end of a battle or of course quite often the beginning of a battle.

We often remember the lessons that were learned from that particular battle or war.

So commemoration normally for something that has a type of deeper sombre feeling, sombre.

Now there is a great word.

Something that is sombre is something that might be slightly sad or something that is mournful.

It is sombre, a sad anniversary, sombre, something that might be marked as an anniversary but not necessarily a nice thing.

Yes, somebody died or there was a terrible event, a tragic event that occurred

on a particular date and it could be, say, a year later or ten years later.

Like 911, for example, there a big significant event,

and that is, of course, commemorated, you don't celebrate events like that.

It's an anniversary, but it's a commemoration as well.

Although strangely enough and, you might you might celebrate the people.

You might celebrate their lives. Yes. In that situation.

So, again, it might seem strange, but you commemoration can sort of not exactly be a celebration.

We often celebrate a person's life or you think about those people.

So those two things can sometimes mix together or converge,

but we often keep them apart in general speech, another versary is seen as a milestone.

Imagine you're you're driving along in your car

across the Welsh mountains,

and you see a little sign on the side of the road that tells you how far you have to travel before you get back on to the normal road.

So a milestone is often seen as a point of time where something significant happened or is celebrated.

So a milestone physically is a thing that shows you information.

But of course, figuratively it is a point of time when something happens, you've reached.

If you period of time has passed where you have sort of worked and toiled,

maybe, and, put a lot of effort into getting to that point and therefore it's it's like a milestone.

You've reached this point and there's all that period of time is you've put in a lot of effort.

It could be a relationship like you might reach 50 years of marriage or 40 years of marriage.

And that's a it's like a milestone.

Although some people might describe that is a milestone which is a completely different thing.

It's, it's a, it's a marker along a long a journey.

If you are travelling walking 50 miles to London for example.

There will be milestones along the way.

Literally there would be while they used to be in the in the olden days

and then you'd you'd know you'd reached a certain point and then you've got more effort to put in to get to the next point.

But at least it was you were getting there step by step by step.

To reach your goal. Yes.

It can also be a special date.

An anniversary is a special date.

For example, today's date, the 31st of October.

It is the anniversary of my YouTube channel being created.

All those years ago, 89 years ago. Can you believe it?

Maybe a holiday.

So holiday.

We mentioned this earlier because festivals, many festivals that take place are of course

religious holy days, hence the word holiday.

So we often have an anniversary or some sort of celebration on a particular day or during a particular time.

For example, at the moment we have Diwali taking place that will take place over.

I think it's around about three days.

It will build up and today is the is the peak of of that particular celebration.

And of course we can have a jubilee.

So in its basic definition, Jubilee just means celebration and anniversary.

Quite often that is celebrated is a jubilee.

I think it's a great word.

It's a very old fashioned word.

If you believe it's characterised by certain events like street parties and things like that.

That we have jubilees, don't we?

To celebrate, we used to have a lot of them with a queen to celebrate so many years of her reign.

When she was alive, Golden Jubilee, Silver Jubilee etc..

I think it was about every, was it every 20 years or every 25 years.

We had a jubilee, something like that.

I think it was every ten.

Was it every ten days.

And then when a significant one came along, I remember the silver Jubilee because my, my family and all of my neighbours lived nearby.

Of course they, we all got together and had a big street party to celebrate the silver

Jubilee of the Queen, Queen Elizabeth actually ascending to the throne and, it was a great time.

We don't do it very often anymore.

I think it's one of those things that has sadly faded away, where people used to have these wonderful celebrations,

but they they often don't do it anymore, which which is quite sad when you think about it.

And another example, can I just say another example of like a milestone?

To celebrate would be if you, if you were learning English and then you reached a certain level

in that, in that English, you passed a certain exam you were heading for,

you were trying to get to, I don't know, level ten, but but you reached level two or level three.

That would be like a milestone. It's pointing.

It's a it's a celebration that you've reached a certain point, but you've got further to go in your journey.

That's a good way of looking at it that I need to reach the second level says Vitesse.

I reached it.

So yes, you could say that was a milestone, a point along your journey

to wherever you're getting to

words connected or meanings connected to anniversary and annual celebration is an anniversary.

So something that is celebrated every year.

We often celebrate an anniversary each year that goes by.

Some of them, of course, are more significant.

For example, two years from now it will be 20 years that I've been on YouTube.

So we have to wait for two more years before that arrives.

We might also say on this day, on this day.

So we are looking back on this day.

Something happened in the past, on this day in 2006,

I created my YouTube channel a year ago today or a year ago.

Ten years in the past, or a year ago.

So something that happened in the past quite often we are looking back

one year ago, five years ago, ten years ago.

Quite often we will look back, but we will often signify that with

an annual celebration on this day or a year ago

today, or it is of course a year since we last celebrated that particular thing.

So there are many ways of looking at the word celebration and anniversary.

Some anniversaries are seen as more significant than others, and I think that's fair to say.

Even between people or individuals, some people might have a special anniversary that other people don't observe, as I said earlier.

So there might be some strange anniversaries, Steve, that people celebrate.

Yes, it might be.

I mean, Valentine's Day is a is a

is a is another anniversary that we celebrate isn't it.

Every year with that coming that in that category Mr.

Duncan I suppose it is a thing that happens every year.

It, I wouldn't call this an anniversary year anniversary.

No, but, but it could be an anniversary if you said it is one year

is Valentine's Day.

Yes. If you met the love of your life on Valentine's Day.

That would be, your anniversary.

But yeah, yeah, people can celebrate all sorts of things.

Imagine. Imagine how romantic that must feel.

Imagine falling in love on Valentine's Day and actually marrying that person.

And then every Valentine's Day, it will also be your wedding anniversary, I don't think.

I don't think it gets much more romantic than that, to be honest.

So there are many types of anniversary things we commemorate, things we remember

that happened on a particular date, normally celebrated on the actual date it happened.

It is almost time to go. Actually, we will be going in a few minutes.
