Do we say: Prices have risen or prices have raised?

It's easy to confuse 'lie' and 'lay' and 'rise' and 'raise'.

「嘘」と「寝る」、「上がる」と「上げる」を混同しがちです。

Especially because they're used differently in British and American English.

特に、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語では使用方法が異なるためです。

So, in this lesson we're going to review these verbs and make sure that you have no confusion in how to use them correctly.

So, now let's look at these four confusing verbs starting with.... 'lie' and 'lay'.

それでは、次の 4 つの紛らわしい動詞を見てみましょう .... 'lie' と 'lay'.

What sounds right to you: I lie on my bed or I lay on my bed?

私はベッドに横たわっていますか？それともベッドに横たわっていますか？

Well actually, they're both correct!

実は、どちらも正しいのです！

In British English we say: I lie on my bed.

イギリス英語では、「私はベッドに横たわっています。

Whereas, in American English we say: I lay on my bed.

一方、アメリカ英語では、「I lay on my bed.」と言います。

So, let's look at the verb 'lie' in British English,

それでは、イギリス英語の動詞「嘘」を見

and figure out what the Past tense and the Past Participle are.

て、過去形と過去分詞が何であるかを理解しましょう。

For example: Yesterday  I ..... on my bed. What's the Past Simple form.

例: 昨日、私は……ベッドの上で。 過去形とは？

And, the Past Participle in a sentence like: I  haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

そして、次のような文の過去分詞: 過去 5 年間、太陽の下で ... していません。

Let's see if you can fill in these two blanks.

この 2 つの空白を埋めることができるか見てみましょう。

Let's look at the answers.

答えを見てみましょう。

Yesterday, I lay on my bed.

昨日、私はベッドに横になりました。

And, I haven't lain in the sun for the past five years.

そして、私は過去 5 年間、太陽の下で横になっていません。

So, It's lie, lay (past simple), and lain (past participle).

つまり、嘘、lay（過去形）、lain（過去分詞）です。

So, how about American English?  What are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms in American English? 

では、アメリカ英語はどうでしょうか。 アメリカ英語の過去形と過去分詞形は何ですか?

Look at the two sentences again:

もう一度 2 つの

Yesterday I ..... on my bed. And I haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

文を見てください。 そして、私は……過去 5 年間、太陽の下で過ごしていません。

And the answers are laid and laid.

そして、答えは敷設されています。

Yesterday I laid on my bed.

昨日、私はベッドに横になりました。

And: I haven't laid in the sun for the past five years.

そして：私は過去5年間、太陽の下で寝ていません.

So, we have lay, laid, laid.

それで、私たちはレイド、レイド、レイドしました。

So, 'lie' in British English, and 'lay' in American English are intransitive verbs.

したがって、イギリス英語の「lie」とアメリカ英語の「lay」は自動詞動詞です。

We don't need an object after them.

それらの後にオブジェクトは必要ありません。

I lie or I lay on my bed.

私は横になるか、ベッドに横になります。

But there's also a transitive version of this verb.

しかし、この動詞の他動詞もあります。

For example,  if you want to put your clothes on your bed, what should we say now?

たとえば、服をベッドに置きたい場合、 今何を言うべきですか?

I ..... my clothes on the bed.

私は……服をベッドに。

And the answer is again the verb 'lay'. I lay my clothes on my bed,

そして答えは再び動詞「lay」です。

both in British and in American English.

イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の両方で、服をベッドに置きます。

And the Past and Past Participle forms are the same: lay, laid, laid.

また、過去形と過去分詞形は 同じです。lay、layed、layed です。

Other examples:

その他の例:

Our hen laid five eggs yesterday. Or: I've laid the table.

私たちの雌鶏は昨日 5 個の卵を産みました。 または: テーブルを配置しました。

And coming back to 'lie', don't forget that the verb 'to lie' has a second meaning,

「嘘をつく」に戻って、「嘘をつく」 という動詞には、真実ではないことを言うという 2 番目の意味があることを忘れないでください

which is say something that's not true.

For example: He always lies about his age.

例: 彼はいつも自分の年齢について嘘をついています。

And the Past tense and Past Participle are regular: lie, lied, lied. 

また、過去時制と過去分詞は規則的です。嘘、嘘、嘘です。

Right! That's all for the verbs 'lie' and 'lay'.

右！ 動詞「嘘」と「寝る」については以上です。

Let's have a look now at the verbs 'rise' and 'raise'.

それでは動詞「上昇」と「上昇」を見てみましょう。

To rise is to go up. So, in both British and American English, it's an intransitive verb.

上がることは上がることです 。 したがって、イギリス英語でもアメリカ英語でも、自動詞動詞です。

For example: His salary rises once a year.

例：彼の給料は年に一度上がります。

So, let's see what the Past Simple and Past Participle forms are.

では、単純過去形と過去分詞形が何であるかを見てみましょう。

For example: His salary ..... last year.

例: 彼の給与 ..... 昨年。

Or: His salary has just .....

または: 彼の給料はちょうど

The answers are 'rose' and 'risen'.

..... 答えは 'バラ' と '上昇' です。

His salary rose last year. And: His salary has just risen.

彼の給料は昨年上がりました。 And: 彼の給料は上がったばかりです。

So, we have rise, rose, risen.

それで、私たちは上昇、上昇、上昇しました。

And the transitive version of this verb is 'raise'.

この動詞の他動詞は「raise」です。

They raise his salary once a year.

彼らは年に一度彼の給料を上げます。

So, what are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms?

では、過去形と過去分詞形とは何ですか？

And the answer for both forms is 'raised'.

そして、両方のフォームの答えは「レイズ」です。

They raised his salary last year.

彼らは昨年彼の給料を上げました。

And: They've just raised his salary.

そして: 彼らはちょうど彼の給料を上げました.

So, it's a regular verb: raise, raised, raised.

したがって、これは通常の動詞です。上げる、上げる、上げる。

And I'd like to end with just one other point,  which is about 'rise' and 'raise' as nouns.

最後にもう 1 点だけ挙げておきたいと思います。 それは、名詞としての「上昇」と「上昇」に関するものです。

In British English we say: He's got to pay rise.

イギリス英語では、He's got to pay rise.

But, in American English they say: He's got a pay raise.

しかし、アメリカ英語では、「彼は給料が上がった」と言います。
