It's easy to confuse 'lie' and 'lay' and 'rise' and 'raise'.

È facile confondere "lie" e "lay" e "rise" e "raise".

Especially because they're used differently in British and American English.

Soprattutto perché sono usati in modo diverso nell'inglese britannico e in quello americano.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these verbs and make sure that you have no confusion in how to use them correctly.

Quindi, in questa lezione esamineremo questi verbi e ci assicureremo che tu non abbia confusione su come usarli correttamente.

So, now let's look at these four confusing verbs starting with.... 'lie' and 'lay'.

Quindi, ora diamo un'occhiata a questi quattro verbi confusi che iniziano con.... 'lie' e 'lay'.

What sounds right to you: I lie on my bed or I lay on my bed?

Cosa ti sembra giusto: mi sdraio sul mio letto o mi sdraio sul mio letto?

Well actually, they're both correct!

Beh, in realtà, hanno ragione entrambi!

In British English we say: I lie on my bed.

In inglese britannico diciamo: I lie on my bed.

Whereas, in American English we say: I lay on my bed.

Invece, in inglese americano diciamo: I lay on my bed.

So, let's look at the verb 'lie' in British English,

Quindi, diamo un'occhiata al verbo 'lie' in inglese britannico

and figure out what the Past tense and the Past Participle are.

e scopriamo cosa sono il passato e il participio passato.

For example: Yesterday  I ..... on my bed. What's the Past Simple form.

Ad esempio: ieri  io ..... sul mio letto. Qual è la forma del passato semplice.

And, the Past Participle in a sentence like: I  haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

E il participio passato in una frase del tipo: non ho ..... al sole negli ultimi cinque anni.

Let's see if you can fill in these two blanks.

Vediamo se riesci a riempire questi due spazi vuoti.

Let's look at the answers.

Diamo un'occhiata alle risposte.

Yesterday, I lay on my bed.

Ieri mi sono sdraiato sul letto.

And, I haven't lain in the sun for the past five years.

E non mi sono sdraiato al sole negli ultimi cinque anni.

So, It's lie, lay (past simple), and lain (past participle).

Quindi, è lie, lay (passato semplice) e lain (participio passato).

So, how about American English?  What are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms in American English? 

Allora, che ne dici di inglese americano? Quali sono le forme del passato semplice e del participio passato nell'inglese americano?

Look at the two sentences again:

Guarda di nuovo le due frasi:

Yesterday I ..... on my bed. And I haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

Ieri io ..... sul mio letto. E non mi sono ..... esposto al sole negli ultimi cinque anni.

And the answers are laid and laid.

E le risposte sono poste e poste.

Yesterday I laid on my bed.

Ieri mi sono sdraiato sul letto.

And: I haven't laid in the sun for the past five years.

E: non mi sono sdraiato al sole negli ultimi cinque anni.

So, we have lay, laid, laid.

Quindi, abbiamo posato, posato, posato.

So, 'lie' in British English, and 'lay' in American English are intransitive verbs.

Quindi, "lie" nell'inglese britannico e "lay" nell'inglese americano sono verbi intransitivi.

We don't need an object after them.

Non abbiamo bisogno di un oggetto dopo di loro.

I lie or I lay on my bed.

Mi sdraio o mi sdraio sul mio letto.

But there's also a transitive version of this verb.

For example,  if you want to put your clothes on your bed, what should we say now?

Ad esempio,  se vuoi mettere i vestiti sul letto, cosa dovremmo dire ora?

I ..... my clothes on the bed.

Io... i miei vestiti sul letto.

And the answer is again the verb 'lay'. I lay my clothes on my bed,

E la risposta è di nuovo il verbo 'lay'. Poso i vestiti sul letto,

both in British and in American English.

sia in inglese britannico che americano.

And the Past and Past Participle forms are the same: lay, laid, laid.

E le forme del participio passato e del participio passato sono le stesse: posare, posare, posare.

Other examples:

Our hen laid five eggs yesterday. Or: I've laid the table.

ieri la nostra gallina ha deposto cinque uova. Oppure: ho apparecchiato la tavola.

And coming back to 'lie', don't forget that the verb 'to lie' has a second meaning,

E tornando a 'mentire', non dimenticare che il verbo 'mentire' ha un secondo significato,

which is say something that's not true.

che è dire qualcosa che non è vero.

For example: He always lies about his age.

Ad esempio: mento sempre sulla sua età.

And the Past tense and Past Participle are regular: lie, lied, lied. 

E il passato e il participio passato sono regolari: lie, lied, lied.

Right! That's all for the verbs 'lie' and 'lay'.

Giusto! Questo è tutto per i verbi "lie" e "lay".

Let's have a look now at the verbs 'rise' and 'raise'.

Diamo un'occhiata ora ai verbi 'rise' e 'raise'.

To rise is to go up. So, in both British and American English, it's an intransitive verb.

Alzarsi è salire. Quindi, sia nell'inglese britannico che in quello americano, è un verbo intransitivo.

For example: His salary rises once a year.

Ad esempio: il suo stipendio aumenta una volta all'anno.

So, let's see what the Past Simple and Past Participle forms are.

Quindi, vediamo quali sono le forme del passato semplice e del participio passato.

For example: His salary ..... last year.

Ad esempio: il suo stipendio ..... l'anno scorso.

Or: His salary has just .....

Oppure: il suo stipendio è appena .....

The answers are 'rose' and 'risen'.

Le risposte sono 'è aumentato' e 'è aumentato'. Il

His salary rose last year. And: His salary has just risen.

suo stipendio è aumentato l'anno scorso. E: il suo stipendio è appena aumentato.

So, we have rise, rose, risen.

Quindi, ci siamo alzati, alzati, risorti.

And the transitive version of this verb is 'raise'.

E la versione transitiva di questo verbo è "alzare".

They raise his salary once a year.

Gli aumentano lo stipendio una volta all'anno.

So, what are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms?

Quindi, quali sono le forme Past Simple e Past Participle?

And the answer for both forms is 'raised'.

E la risposta per entrambe le forme è 'sollevata'.

They raised his salary last year.

Gli hanno aumentato lo stipendio l'anno scorso.

And: They've just raised his salary.

E: gli hanno appena aumentato lo stipendio.

So, it's a regular verb: raise, raised, raised.

Quindi, è un verbo regolare: alzare, alzare, alzare.

And I'd like to end with just one other point,  which is about 'rise' and 'raise' as nouns.

E vorrei concludere solo con un altro punto, che riguarda 'rise' e 'raise' come sostantivi.

In British English we say: He's got to pay rise.

In inglese britannico diciamo: He's got to pay rise.

But, in American English they say: He's got a pay raise.

Ma in inglese americano dicono: Ha un aumento di stipendio.
