Do we say: Prices have risen or prices have raised?

¿Decimos: los precios han subido o los precios han subido?

It's easy to confuse 'lie' and 'lay' and 'rise' and 'raise'.

Es fácil confundir 'recostarse' y 'recostarse' y 'levantarse' y 'aumentar'.

Especially because they're used differently in British and American English.

Especialmente porque se usan de manera diferente en inglés británico y americano.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these verbs and make sure that you have no confusion in how to use them correctly.

Por lo tanto, en esta lección vamos a revisar estos verbos y nos aseguraremos de que no tenga dudas sobre cómo usarlos correctamente.

So, now let's look at these four confusing verbs starting with.... 'lie' and 'lay'.

Entonces, ahora veamos estos cuatro verbos confusos que comienzan con... 'lie' y 'lay'.

What sounds right to you: I lie on my bed or I lay on my bed?

¿Qué te suena bien: me acuesto en mi cama o me acuesto en mi cama?

Well actually, they're both correct!

Bueno, en realidad, ¡ambos son correctos!

In British English we say: I lie on my bed.

En inglés británico decimos: I lie on my bed.

Whereas, in American English we say: I lay on my bed.

Mientras que, en inglés americano decimos: I lay on my bed.

So, let's look at the verb 'lie' in British English,

Entonces, veamos el verbo 'lie' en inglés británico

and figure out what the Past tense and the Past Participle are.

y averigüemos qué son el tiempo pasado y el participio pasado.

For example: Yesterday  I ..... on my bed. What's the Past Simple form.

Por ejemplo: Ayer  yo ..... en mi cama. ¿Cuál es la forma Pasado Simple?

And, the Past Participle in a sentence like: I  haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

Y, el Participio Pasado en una oración como: No he ..... en el sol durante los últimos cinco años.

Let's see if you can fill in these two blanks.

Veamos si puedes llenar estos dos espacios en blanco.

Let's look at the answers.

Veamos las respuestas.

Yesterday, I lay on my bed.

Ayer, me acosté en mi cama.

And, I haven't lain in the sun for the past five years.

Y no me he tumbado al sol en los últimos cinco años.

So, It's lie, lay (past simple), and lain (past participle).

Entonces, es lie, lay (pasado simple) y lain (participio pasado).

So, how about American English?  What are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms in American English? 

Entonces, ¿qué hay del inglés americano? ¿Cuáles son las formas del pasado simple y del participio pasado en inglés americano?

Look at the two sentences again:

Mire las dos oraciones nuevamente:

Yesterday I ..... on my bed. And I haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

Ayer yo ..... en mi cama. Y no me he expuesto al sol durante los últimos cinco años.

And the answers are laid and laid.

Y las respuestas están puestas y puestas.

Yesterday I laid on my bed.

Ayer me acosté en mi cama.

And: I haven't laid in the sun for the past five years.

Y: no me he puesto al sol en los últimos cinco años.

So, we have lay, laid, laid.

Entonces, tenemos lay, lay, lay.

So, 'lie' in British English, and 'lay' in American English are intransitive verbs.

Entonces, 'lie' en inglés británico y 'lay' en inglés americano son verbos intransitivos.

We don't need an object after them.

No necesitamos un objeto después de ellos.

I lie or I lay on my bed.

Miento o me acuesto en mi cama.

But there's also a transitive version of this verb.

Pero también hay una versión transitiva de este verbo.

For example,  if you want to put your clothes on your bed, what should we say now?

Por ejemplo, si quieres poner tu ropa en la cama, ¿qué deberíamos decir ahora?

I ..... my clothes on the bed.

Yo..... mi ropa sobre la cama.

And the answer is again the verb 'lay'. I lay my clothes on my bed,

Y la respuesta es de nuevo el verbo 'lay'. Pongo mi ropa en mi cama,

both in British and in American English.

tanto en inglés británico como en inglés americano.

And the Past and Past Participle forms are the same: lay, laid, laid.

Y las formas Pasado y Participio Pasado son las mismas: lay, lay, lay.

Other examples:

Otros ejemplos:

Our hen laid five eggs yesterday. Or: I've laid the table.

Nuestra gallina puso cinco huevos ayer. O: he puesto la mesa.

And coming back to 'lie', don't forget that the verb 'to lie' has a second meaning,

Y volviendo a 'mentir', no olvides que el verbo 'mentir' tiene un segundo significado,

which is say something that's not true.

que es decir algo que no es cierto.

For example: He always lies about his age.

Por ejemplo: siempre miente sobre su edad.

And the Past tense and Past Participle are regular: lie, lied, lied. 

Y el tiempo pasado y el participio pasado son regulares: mentir, mentir, mentir.

Right! That's all for the verbs 'lie' and 'lay'.

¡Derecho! Eso es todo por los verbos 'lie' y 'lay'.

Let's have a look now at the verbs 'rise' and 'raise'.

Echemos un vistazo ahora a los verbos 'subir' y 'elevar'.

To rise is to go up. So, in both British and American English, it's an intransitive verb.

Subir es subir. Entonces, tanto en inglés británico como americano, es un verbo intransitivo.

For example: His salary rises once a year.

Por ejemplo: Su salario aumenta una vez al año.

So, let's see what the Past Simple and Past Participle forms are.

Entonces, veamos cuáles son las formas Pasado simple y Pasado participio.

For example: His salary ..... last year.

Por ejemplo: Su salario ..... el año pasado.

Or: His salary has just .....

O: Su salario acaba de...

The answers are 'rose' and 'risen'.

Las respuestas son 'rosa' y 'resucitado'.

His salary rose last year. And: His salary has just risen.

Su salario aumentó el año pasado. Y: Su salario acaba de subir.

So, we have rise, rose, risen.

Entonces, tenemos subida, rosa, subida.

And the transitive version of this verb is 'raise'.

Y la versión transitiva de este verbo es 'elevar'.

They raise his salary once a year.

Le suben el sueldo una vez al año.

So, what are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms?

Entonces, ¿cuáles son las formas Pasado Simple y Pasado Participio?

And the answer for both forms is 'raised'.

Y la respuesta para ambas formas es 'elevado'.

They raised his salary last year.

Le subieron el sueldo el año pasado.

And: They've just raised his salary.

Y: Acaban de aumentar su salario.

So, it's a regular verb: raise, raised, raised.

Entonces, es un verbo regular: aumentar, aumentar, aumentar.

And I'd like to end with just one other point,  which is about 'rise' and 'raise' as nouns.

Y me gustaría terminar solo con otro punto, que se trata de 'subir' y 'subir' como sustantivos.

In British English we say: He's got to pay rise.

En inglés británico decimos: He's got to pay rise.

But, in American English they say: He's got a pay raise.

Pero, en inglés americano, dicen: Tiene un aumento de sueldo.
