It's easy to confuse 'lie' and 'lay' and 'rise' and 'raise'.

'거짓말'과 '누르다', '일어나다'와 '들어오다'를 혼동하기 쉽습니다.

Especially because they're used differently in British and American English.

특히 영국식 영어와 미국식 영어에서 다르게 사용되기 때문입니다.

So, in this lesson we're going to review these verbs and make sure that you have no confusion in how to use them correctly.

따라서 이번 강의에서는 이러한 동사를 검토 하고 올바르게 사용하는 방법에 대해 혼란이 없는지 확인하겠습니다.

So, now let's look at these four confusing verbs starting with.... 'lie' and 'lay'.

이제 .... '거짓말'과 '놓다'로 시작하는 혼란스러운 네 가지 동사를 살펴보겠습니다.

What sounds right to you: I lie on my bed or I lay on my bed?

당신에게 맞는 소리는 무엇입니까? 침대에 누워 있습니까 아니면 침대에 누워 있습니까?

Well actually, they're both correct!

사실 둘 다 맞습니다!

In British English we say: I lie on my bed.

영국식 영어로는 I lie on my bed라고 합니다.

Whereas, in American English we say: I lay on my bed.

반면 미국식 영어에서는 I lay on my bed라고 말합니다.

So, let's look at the verb 'lie' in British English,

그럼 영국식 영어로 '거짓말'이라는 동사를 살펴보고

and figure out what the Past tense and the Past Participle are.

과거 시제와 과거 분사가 무엇인지 알아봅시다.

For example: Yesterday  I ..... on my bed. What's the Past Simple form.

예: 어제 나는 ..... 내 침대에. 과거 단순 형식은 무엇입니까?

And, the Past Participle in a sentence like: I  haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

그리고 다음과 같은 문장의 과거 분사: I n't ..... in the sun for the last five years.

Let's see if you can fill in these two blanks.

이 두 빈칸을 채울 수 있는지 봅시다.

Let's look at the answers.

답변을 살펴보겠습니다.

Yesterday, I lay on my bed.

어제는 침대에 누워 있습니다.

And, I haven't lain in the sun for the past five years.

그리고 지난 5년 동안 햇볕에 눕지 않았습니다.

So, It's lie, lay (past simple), and lain (past participle).

그래서 거짓말, 누워(과거형), lain(과거분사)입니다.

So, how about American English?  What are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms in American English? 

그렇다면 미국식 영어는 어떨까요? 미국 영어의 과거 단순 및 과거 분사 형식은 무엇입니까?

Look at the two sentences again:

두 문장을 다시 보십시오:

Yesterday I ..... on my bed. And I haven't ..... in the sun for the past five years.

어제 I ..... on my bed. 그리고 나는 지난 5년 동안 ..... 태양 아래서 본 적이 없습니다.

And the answers are laid and laid.

그리고 대답이 놓여 있습니다.

Yesterday I laid on my bed.

어제 나는 침대에 누웠다.

And: I haven't laid in the sun for the past five years.

그리고: 나는 지난 5년 동안 햇볕에 눕지 않았습니다.

So, we have lay, laid, laid.

그래서 우리는 눕고, 눕고, 눕습니다.

So, 'lie' in British English, and 'lay' in American English are intransitive verbs.

따라서 영국 영어의 '거짓말'과 미국 영어의 '레이'는 자동사입니다.

We don't need an object after them.

I lie or I lay on my bed.

나는 누워 있거나 침대에 누워 있습니다.

But there's also a transitive version of this verb.

For example,  if you want to put your clothes on your bed, what should we say now?

예를 들어 옷을 침대 위에 놓고 싶다면 지금 무엇을 말해야 할까요?

I ..... my clothes on the bed.

나는 ..... 침대 위의 내 옷.

And the answer is again the verb 'lay'. I lay my clothes on my bed,

그리고 대답은 다시 동사 'lay'입니다.

both in British and in American English.

영국식 영어와 미국식 영어로 된 옷을 침대에 눕힙니다.

And the Past and Past Participle forms are the same: lay, laid, laid.

그리고 과거형과 과거 분사형은 동일합니다.

Other examples:

다른 예:

Our hen laid five eggs yesterday. Or: I've laid the table.

우리 암탉은 어제 다섯 개의 알을 낳았습니다. 또는: 내가 테이블을 마련했습니다.

And coming back to 'lie', don't forget that the verb 'to lie' has a second meaning,

'거짓말'로 돌아가서 '거짓말하다 '라는 동사

which is say something that's not true.

에는 사실이 아닌 것을 말하는 두 번째 의미가 있다는 것을 잊지 마세요.

For example: He always lies about his age.

예: 그는 항상 나이에 대해 거짓말을 합니다.

And the Past tense and Past Participle are regular: lie, lied, lied. 

그리고 과거 시제와 과거 분사는 규칙적입니다: 거짓말, 거짓말, 거짓말.

Right! That's all for the verbs 'lie' and 'lay'.

오른쪽! 이것이 동사 '거짓말'과 '누르다'의 전부입니다.

Let's have a look now at the verbs 'rise' and 'raise'.

이제 동사 '상승'과 '상승'을 살펴보겠습니다.

To rise is to go up. So, in both British and American English, it's an intransitive verb.

상승하는 것은 상승하는 것입니다. 따라서 영국식 영어와 미국식 영어 모두 자동사입니다.

For example: His salary rises once a year.

예: 그의 월급은 1년에 한 번 인상됩니다.

So, let's see what the Past Simple and Past Participle forms are.

자, 과거 단순형과 과거 분사형이 무엇인지 봅시다.

For example: His salary ..... last year.

예: 그의 월급 ..... 작년.

Or: His salary has just .....

또는: 그의 월급은

The answers are 'rose' and 'risen'.

..... 대답은 '장미'와 '상승'입니다.

His salary rose last year. And: His salary has just risen.

그의 급여는 작년에 상승했습니다. 그리고: 그의 급여가 방금 올랐습니다.

So, we have rise, rose, risen.

그래서 우리는 상승, 상승, 상승했습니다.

And the transitive version of this verb is 'raise'.

그리고 이 동사의 타동사는 '키우다'입니다.

They raise his salary once a year.

그들은 1년에 한 번 그의 월급을 올립니다.

So, what are the Past Simple and Past Participle forms?

그렇다면 과거 단순형과 과거 분사형은 무엇인가요?

And the answer for both forms is 'raised'.

그리고 두 형태 모두에 대한 대답은 '제기'입니다.

They raised his salary last year.

그들은 작년에 그의 급여를 인상했습니다.

And: They've just raised his salary.

그리고: 그들은 방금 그의 월급을 인상했습니다.

So, it's a regular verb: raise, raised, raised.

따라서 일반 동사입니다. 인상, 제기, 제기.

And I'd like to end with just one other point,  which is about 'rise' and 'raise' as nouns.

그리고 명사로서의 '상승'과 '상승'에 관한 한 가지 다른 요점으로 마무리하고 싶습니다.

In British English we say: He's got to pay rise.

영국식 영어로는 He's got to pay rise라고 합니다.

But, in American English they say: He's got a pay raise.
