What is a gerund?

ما هو إسم الفعل ؟

Do you know?

هل تعرفون ؟

I can tell you that I didn't even know what a gerund was

يمكنني ان اخبركم انني لم اعرف ماذا كان إسم الفعل

before I started studying to be a teacher.

قبل ان ابدأ الدراسة لأٌصبح مُدرسة

But native English speakers use gerunds a lot in English.

لكن المتحدثين الاصليين يستخدمون اسم الفعل كثيراً في اللغة الانجليزية

All the time.

في كل وقت

Whether we realise it or not.

ان كنا ندرك ذلك او لا

So it's important that you understand them too

اذا من المهم ان تفهمهم ايضاً

and in today's lesson, I'm going to show you how.

وفي درس اليوم، سأشرح لكم كيف

Okay, I'm going to start by answering your question

حسنا، سأبدأ بالاجابة على سؤالكم

in the simplest way possible.

بأبسط طريقة ممكنة

What is a gerund?

ما هو اسم الفعل ؟

Gerunds look like a verb but they're actually a noun.

اسم الفعل يبدو مثل الفعل لكن في الحقيقة هو اسم .

Okay, perhaps you still don't know what that means.

حسنا، ربما لازلت لا تعرف ماذا يعني ذلك.

We all know that a verb is an action, right?

كلنا نعلم ان الفعل هو حركة، صحيح

We do a verb.

For example, 'I jog every morning'.

نقوم بالفعل

مثلا، انا اهرول كل صباح

But sometimes, I just want to talk about an action,

لكن احيانا، انا اريد ان اتكلم عن الفعل

not do it.

و ليس فعله

Jogging is one of my favourite ways to exercise.

الهرولة احدى تماريني المفضلة.

I love jogging.

انا احب الهرولة

I'm talking about 'jogging' as an action.

انا اتحدث عن"الهرولة" كأسم،

I'm not jogging right now,

انا لا اهرول الآن

I'm just talking about something that I love to do.

انا فقط اتحدث عن شيء احب ان أُمارسه

So in other words,

اذا بمعنى آخر،

I'm referring to the action of jogging as a noun.

انا أُشير الى فعل الهرولة كأسم

Or a thing.

او شيء

So I've just used the gerund.

لذلك استخدمت اسم الفعل

That's a gerund.

هذا هو المقصود

I used a word that looks like a verb, as a noun.

استخدمت كلمة تبدو مثل الفعل كأسم

So that's not too difficult, is it?

اذا الامر ليس بتلك الصعوبة، اليس كذلك ؟

So how can we recognise the gerund?

اذا كيف يمكننا ان نتعرف على اسم الفعل ؟

What does it look like?

كيف يبدو ؟

Well the gerund is formed by adding '-ing'

حسنا، اسم الفعل يتكون باضافة -ing

to the base form of a verb

لصيغة الفعل الاساسية

or the bare infinitive form.

او الصيغة المجردة

So the base form is 'jog'

اذا الفعل المجرد "jog" = يهرول

with '-ing'

مع -ing

'jogging'

يصبح "jogging" الهرولة

I love jogging.

انا احب الهرولة

'jog' is the base form, 'jogging' is the gerund.

jog هي الصيغة المجردة اما jogging هي صيغة اسم الفعل

So obviously, the reason why this is confusing

لذا بكل وضوح، سبب ان الامر مربك

is because this

لانه

looks a lot like the continuous form of the verb, right?

يبدو مشابها للصيغة المستمرة من الفعل، صحيح

So to recognise a gerund, you need to pay attention

اذا للتعرف على اسم الفعل، عليك الانتباه

to how it's used in a sentence.

عليه كيف يستخدم في الجملة

And I've got a test for you.

و لدي اختبار لكم

I absolutely love singing.

انا احب الغناء بالتأكيد

But performing in public makes me really nervous.

لكن الاداء امام العامة يجعلني متوترة

Standing on a stage in front of a crowd is terrifying.

الوقوف على منصة امام جمهور امرٌ مرعب

So did you hear all of those gerunds?

اذا هل لاحظت اسماء الافعال تلك ؟

Did you recognise them?

هل تعرفت عليهم ؟

Let's take a closer look.

لنأخذ نظرة اقرب

I absolutely love singing.

انا احب الغناء بالتأكيد

But performing in public makes me really nervous.

لكن الاداء امام العامة يحعلني متوترة

Standing on a stage in front of a crowd is terrifying.

الوقوف على منصة امام جمهور امرٌ مرعب

Okay. So far, we've learned so far generally

حسنا، حتى الان تعلمنا بشكل عام

what a gerund is

ما هو اسم الفعل

and how to make a gerund.

وكيف تكونه

So here's the next question.

اذا السؤال التالي

When

متى

and how

وكيف

do we use gerunds?

نستخدم اسم الفعل ؟

Just like nouns,.

مثل الاسماء

gerunds can be used in many different situations.

اسم الفعل يمكن ان يستخدم في مواقف كثيرة

They can be used as the subject of a sentence.

يمكن ان يستخدم كفاعل الجملة

The object of a sentence.

كمفعول به في الجملة

They can be used after prepositions.

يمكن ان يستخدم بعد حروف الجر

They can be used with fixed expressions.

يمكن ان يستخدم في المصطلحات الثابتة

And we can sometimes use a gerund

ويمكننا احيانا استخدامه

after another verb.

بعد فعل اخر

That's a lot of different possibilities!

هنالك الكثير من الاحتمالات المختلفة

So let's break them down together.

اذا لنشرحهم سوياً

Firstly, you can use a gerund when you want to

اولا، يمكنك استخدام اسم الفعل عندما تريد

use a verb as the subject of a sentence or a phrase.

استخدام الفعل كفاعل للجملة

Volunteering is a great way

التطوع طريقة رائعة

to give back to your community.

لرد الجميل الى مجتمعك

Eating fruits and vegetables

اكل الفواكه والخضار

is important for a healthy diet.

مهم لنظام غذائي صحي

Studying gerunds doesn't have to be frustrating!

دراسة اسماء الافعال ليس من الضرورة ان تكون محبطة

Next you can use a gerund as the object of a sentence.

بعدها يمكنك استخدام اسم الفعل كمفعول به في الجملة

Now there are some very common verbs

الان هنالك العديد من الافعال

that take gerunds as objects.

التي تأخذ اسم الفعل كمفعول به، يحب، يعجب، يستمتع، يفضل، لا يعجب و يكره

All of these verbs can be followed by a gerund.

كل هذه الافعال يمكن ان تتبع باسم الفعل

I really like cooking,

انا حقا احب الطبخ

but my fiance is a much better cook than me!

لكن خطيبي طباخ افضل مني بكثير

She really enjoys taking pictures of sunsets.

هي حقا تستمتع بالالتقاط الصور لغروب الشمس

I prefer buying meat from my local butcher.

أُفضل شراء اللحم من الجزار المحلي

Okay? It's your turn now!

When you see a verb after a preposition,

عندما ترى فعلا بعد حرف جر

it's actually often a gerund.

في الحقيقة غالبا ما يكون اسم فعل

You remember prepositions, right?

تتذكر حروف الجر، صحيح ؟

I talked about them here in this lesson

تحدثت عنهم في هذا الدرس

if you need a refresher.

اذا اردت استذكارهم

They're words like: on, at, in, under,

انها كلمات مثل: على، عند، في، تحت

behind, without.

خلف، بدون

She walked out of the room without saying a word.

خرجت من الغرفة من دون قول كلمة

And so these rules about prepositions include

وهذه القواعد عن حروف الجر تتضمن

expressions that end in prepositions like

تعبيرات تنتهي بحروف جر مثل

'in spite of'

'على الرغم من'

In spite of training for years, she got

على الرغم من تدربها لسنين،

knocked out of the tournament in the first round.

خرجت من المسابقة في الجولة الاولى

'there's no point in'

"لا غاية من"

There's no point in taking your jacket,

لا غاية من اخذ سترتك

it's really hot outside!

الجو حار في الخارج !

'fed up with'

"طفح الكيل من"

I'm fed up with asking you to be quiet!

طفح كيلي من سؤالك لتكون هادئا !

There are some really common expressions

هنالك البعض من التعبيرات الشائعة حقا

that are followed by gerunds too.

التي تتبع باسم الفعل

Really

حقا...

you do just need to memorise these ones.

انت فعلا تحتاج لحفظ هذه التعابير

Like 'can't help'

مثل "لا يمكنني المساعدة"

I can't help being a perfectionist!

لا يمكنني التظاهر بكوني مثالية

'can't stand..'

لا يمكنني التحمل

I can't stand working with people

لايمكنني تحمل العمل مع الاشخاص

who always show up late!

الذين يأتون بوقت متأخر دائماً

'it's no use'

"لا فائدة"

It's no use leaving a message,

لا فائدة من ترك رسالة،

she never calls back anyway!

لن ترد ابداً على اي حال

'(to be) worth'

"ليستحق"

It's not worth spending so much money!

الامر لا يستحق صرف الكثير من المال !

These are all really common expressions

تلك كلها تعبيرات شائعة

that are followed by a gerund.

تتبع باسم الفعل

And guess what?

واحزر ماذا ؟

It's your turn again!

Now you may also see gerunds used

والان يمكنك ايضا ان ترى اسم الفعل مستخدماً

after another verb.

بعد فعل آخر

Now some verbs can be followed by a gerund

الان بعض الافعال يمكن ان تتبع بأسم الفعل

or the to-infinitive.

او to -مصدر

And this can be a little confusing.

وهذا يمكن ان يكون مربكاً قليلاً

Because actually,

لانه في الحقيقة

choosing one or the other

اختيار احدها دون الآخر

can change the overall meaning of a sentence.

يمكن ان يغير المعنى العام للجملة

Because in one sentence, the word is a noun

لانه في الجملة الاولى، الكلمة اسم

and in the other, it's a verb.

وفي الجملة الاخرى، انها فعل

So for example,

اذا مثلا،

I'll never forget driving along the coast of Sicily.

لن انسى ابدا القيادة على طول ساحل صقلية

It was truly stunning.

انه كان رائعا بحق.

Don't forget to take your grandma to the supermarket!

لا تنسى اخذ جدتك الى السوبر ماركت !

في الحقيقة فتحت علبة من الديدان هناك !

So

لذلك

He'll keep asking you until you say yes.

سيبقى يسألك حتى تقولين نعم

What's the gerund?

اين اسم الفعل ؟

'avoiding', right?

تجنبه، صحيح

And it's a gerund used with a common expression.

انه اسم فعل مستخدم مع تعبير شائع

'It's no use'

"لا فائدة من "

It's no use avoiding. It's no use asking.

لا فائدة من تجنب، لا فائدة من سؤال

Do you feel like watching a horror movie

هل تشعر بأنك تشاهد فلم رعب

or a romantic film?

ام فلماً رومانسي ؟

Which is the gerund?

هذا هو اسم الفعل

And it's a gerund used as an object, isn't it?

وهو اسم فعل مستخدم كمفعول به، اليس كذلك ؟

Not realising that one of my kids

عدم ادراكي ان احد اطفالي

is sick is one of my biggest fears!

مريض احد اكبر مخاوفي

So the gerund is

اذا اسم الفعل هو

'realising'

ادراك

And it's a gerund used as a subject.

وهو اسم فعل مستخدم كفاعل

In spite of being injured,

على الرغم من كونها مصابة

she still managed to finish the marathon!

لا زالت تنوي انهاء الماراثون

So the gerund is 'being'

اذا اسم الفعل هو "كونها"

and it's a gerund used after a preposition.

وهو اسم فعل مستخدم بعد حرف جر

So do you feel a little more confident

اذا هل تشعر بثقة اكثر الآن
