인구 만 오천 명밖에 안 되는 아주 작은 마을이에요.

To start, I want to share with you guys something about my hometown

노워크에서는 놀 거리를 찾으려면

of Norwalk, Ohio.

월마트에 가거나 다른 지역에 가야 해요.

Now, as this video stated, I am from Norwalk,

which is an extremely small town, about 15,000 people.

저는 평생 거기서 살았고요.

And really, in Norwalk, if you want to do something fun,

지금 공립 고등학교 3학년입니다.

you go to Walmart or drive half an hour to something more interesting.

저는 저희 마을이 좋아요.

And for Norwalk, I've lived there for my entire life,

그리고 저는 평범한 학생입니다.

I'm a senior at the local public high school,

토론 클럽 부장을 맡고 있고, 교회에서 봉사도 하고요.

2018년 11월,

and you know, it's something to where I really enjoy my small town.

And I'm just a normal kid, you know,

저는 레딧에 조언을 구하는 글을 썼어요.

I lead debate clubs, I volunteer at my church.

제가 겪고 있는 문제에 대한 설명이 필요해서였죠.

And back in November of 2018,

I made a small Reddit post asking for advice

예방접종에 대한 것이었고

on an issue that I was encountering that I needed some clarification on.

남들은 제 나이에 이미 맞은 기본적인 백신,

소아마비, 홍역, 독감, HPV, 간염을 비롯한

And this issue, as was stated in the introduction,

was something towards vaccinations

여러 질병에 면역이 되어 있지 않다는 내용이었어요.

and how I was not immunized against various diseases,

제 질문은 단순하고 이상했는데

including polio and measles, as well as influenza, HPV, hepatitis --

예방접종을 받고 싶다고 했기 때문이죠.

the standard vaccine someone my age would receive.

이상하지만 그런 일이 있었고,

Now, this question I asked was simple and pretty strange,

제 이야기는 널리 퍼졌어요.

제가 백신을 맞고 싶어 한다고요.

because, you know, I wanted to get vaccinated.

이상하게도 일은 더 커졌고

That's kind of weird, but it happened,

인터뷰를 하고 많은 사람들과 이야기를 했죠.

and then this turned into a public story,

다시 말씀드리자면 전 평범한 학생이지 과학자가 아니에요.

because I wanted to get vaccinated.

비영리단체 운영자도 아니고, 그냥 평범한 사람이거든요.

So that was kind of strange, and then it blew up more,

and I was doing interviews and talking to more people,

보세요. 후드티 입고 있잖아요.

(웃음)

and again, I'm a normal kid, I'm not a scientist,

이 질문과 이야기 때문에

I don't lead a non-profit, I am a pretty casual person,

백신을 맞고 싶다고 한 것 때문에

I'm wearing a hoodie.

그리고 제가 처한 흥미로운 상황 때문에

(Laughter)

저는 순식간에 굉장히 중요한 논란의 중심에

Because of this question and this story,

놓이게 됐다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

because I wanted to get vaccinated

매체가 다룬 제 이야기와 헤드라인은 대부분 정확했어요.

and this interesting situation I was in,

I saw that I quickly was in this public setting

"백신에 반대하는 어머니를 거역한

of an extremely important controversy and discussion taking place.

오하이오의 고교생이 왜 백신을 맞았는지 털어놓다.”

Now, I saw that the stories and headlines were pretty accurate for most part,

아주 정확한 사실입니다.

저는 상원 위원회에서 증언도 했는데요.

you know, "After defying anti-vax mom,

거기서 말하길,

Ohio teen expresses why he got vaccinated."

"백신 접종을 자원한 이 학생은

방금 의회에서 모친의 반백신 사상을 비난했습니다.”

Pretty accurate, pretty true.

And, as stated, I testified in front of a Senate committee,

네, 저는 그러지 않았지만 괜찮습니다.

so there, they said,

"This teen who self-vaccinated

어떤 뉴스 매체는 더 심하더라고요.

just ripped his mom's anti-vaxer beliefs in front of Congress."

“어떻게 살아남았는지 몰라요.

OK, I didn't really do that, but that's fine.

18세 청소년이 뒤늦게 백신을 맞고 반 백신파 부모를 공격.”

And certain news outlets took it a little further.

저는 부모님을 공격하지 않았고 이건 전혀 사실이 아닙니다.

"'God knows how I'm still alive':

Teenager, 18, finally gets vaccinated and attacks his anti-vax parents."

보시다시피 제 이야기는 논란에 대한 것이에요.

제 어머니는 나쁜 사람이고 저는 좋은 사람이고

So I did not attack my parents, that's not accurate at all.

제가 어머니를 비난했다는 거죠.

And you know, really, my story was more about controversy.

거짓입니다.

실제로 어땠냐면요.

저는 어머니께 버릇없이 대한 적이 없어요.

It was about how my mom was bad and I was good,

제가 어머니의 믿음이 잘못된 정보 때문이라는 것을

and I was ripping her a new one.

발언한 공적인 자리에서조차

저는 어머니가 다정한 분이고, 이 점이 중요한 포인트라고 말했어요.

Not true.

Not what was happening.

I never was rude towards my mother,

왜냐하면 제가 생각하기에 백신이 왜 중요한지 알고 있는

and even in public settings where I expressed

how her beliefs were misinformed,

과학적인 사회에서는 많은 사람들이

I said that she was a loving mother, and that's important to understand.

백신을 맞지 않는 사람을 오해할 수 있기 때문이에요.

아이를 응급실에 데려가지 않는 부모와 비슷하죠.

Because a lot of people, I think, in the scientific community

that understand why vaccines are so important,

굉장히 위험한 상황이고

어떤 측면에서는 자녀에게 애정이 없다고 볼 수도 있잖아요.

can really be confused by someone who would not vaccinate.

Really, we can compare it to someone not taking their child to the ER.

저는 이해할 수 있어요.

하지만 저희 어머니는 자녀를 사랑하는 부모라면

That's a very dangerous situation to be in

and it shows some lack of empathy towards your children in some regards.

백신을 맞히지 말아야 한다는 잘못된 정보에 넘어간 거예요.

And really, I can understand that, I can.

But my mom, she was misinformed and misled by sources that convinced her

제가 이 문제를 인식하고 어머니와 대화를 했을 때,

처음엔 물론 잘되지 않았는데

that if she was a loving parent, she wouldn't vaccinate.

어머니 입장에서는 제가 자폐증을 유발하거나

평생 장애를 갖게 될지도 모르는 일을

Now, when I encountered this and I talked to my mom,

하고 싶다고 말한 거라

it didn't obviously go well at first,

because I was wanting to do something

그랬던 거죠.

흥미로웠던 건

that she thought would either cause autism or maim me for the rest of my life,

제가 이 상황에 처음 마주했을 때,

and I said I wanted to do this -- didn't really fly,

인터뷰를 하면서

제기한 질문이 하나 있었어요.

didn't really go well.

긍정적인 건 아닌데요.

But the thing that I found interesting

내가 대체 무슨 일을 벌인 거지?

was that when I had started to get into this circumstance,

저는 꾸준히 이 질문을 던졌는데

다시 한번 말하지만 저는 전문가가 아니라 일반 학생인데,

do these interviews,

there was one question I proposed.

CNN이랑 Fox 뉴스에서 과학 논의에 대해 말하고 있잖아요.

Wasn't a positive one:

What in the world have I gotten myself into?

내가 여기 껴도 되는 건가, 내가 발언해도 되는 자리인가?

That's what I asked constantly,

because, again, I am not an expert, I am a normal kid,

많은 분들이 좋은 뜻으로 그런 질문을 하셨어요.

and now I'm talking to CNN and Fox News about a scientific discussion

하지만 저는 제가 모르는 것은 절대 말하지 않았고

that really, should I be facilitating, should I be commenting on?

제 개인적인 경험에 대해 얘기했어요.

상원 청문회에서도

And a lot of people questioned that, and for good reason.

전 그저 잘못된 정보가 얼마나 위험한지만 말했고요.

But I never claimed things I didn't understand,

저희 어머니가 믿는 것들은 소셜 미디어에서 접한 거예요.

I talked about my personal experiences.

페이스북이나 거짓을 퍼뜨리는 아주 위험한 기관들에서

And even at the Senate hearing,

I just talked about how misinformation is dangerous.

얻은 정보들이죠.

My mom got a lot of her beliefs from social media, from Facebook

저는 제가 이 활동을 하면서

아무리 점잖게 대처해도

and from organizations that were allowing their platforms to push lies

아무리 정확하게 말하려고 해도

분노한 사람들로부터 많은 비난을 받는다는 걸 알았어요.

that were very dangerous.

Now, I also saw that as I was doing this --

제가 증언을 하기 위해 워싱턴에 갔을 때

and I was doing this as respectfully as I could,

사무실 건물을 둘러보고 있었는데

as accurately as I could --

같은 엘리베이터에 탄 여자 분들이

I was getting a lot of criticism, a lot of very angry people.

제가 바로 아이들이 장애인이 되고 살해당하는 원인이며

When I was in DC for that testimony I gave,

히틀러나 다름없다고 하셨어요.

I was looking around the office building

재미있는 경험이었죠.

and three ladies got in an elevator with me

(웃음)

and said I'm the reason their children are being maimed and murdered

대부분의 상황에서 대부분의 사람들은

and I'm basically Hitler.

비난을 받으면 의심을 하게 돼요.

So that was fun.

(Laughter)

그 의심은 의문으로 이어지고 의문은 중단으로 이어지죠.

So really, for most circumstances, for most teenagers and most people,

왜냐하면 흥미 있는 주제가 있거나

when they get criticized, it leads to doubt.

참가하고 싶은 운동이 있을 때

And that doubt leads to questioning, and that questioning leads to quitting.

어떤 입장을 취하고 맞는 말을 해도

Because, when you have a topic that you're interested in,

비난은 피할 수 없거든요.

특히 나이가 어리면 그걸 감당하기가 어렵죠.

or a movement that you want to be a part of,

그리고 이렇게 젊은이들의 참여가 필요한 중요한 논의에는

and you're taking a stance and saying what's true,

good ideas don't avoid criticism.

큰 책임이 따릅니다.

And for especially young people, they have a hard time dealing with that,

제가 대단하다는 얘기가 아니고 중요한 건,

and these important discussions that need young people to take a part in,

제가 이 운동과 중요한 과학적 논의에 참여하게 되면서

무슨 일이 일어났냐면요.

it takes a lot of commitment.

I'm not saying that I'm amazing, but here's what's important:

페이스북이 플랫폼을 바꿨습니다.

반백신 컨텐츠에 접근하는 방식을 바꾼다고 해요.

through me joining this movement and this important scientific discussion,

아마존은 자폐증과 백신에 대한 잘못된 책들을 삭제했고요.

here's what happened.

고펀드미는 최근에 반백신 캠페인을 내렸습니다.

Facebook changed their platform.

They were going to change how they approach anti-vax content.

우리는 이런 운동이 어떻게 실제 변화를 가져오고

Amazon even removed misinformed books about autism and vaccines.

이런 게임의 방식과

사람들을 현혹시키고 위험한 생각을 불어넣는

And recently, GoFundMe took down anti-vax campaigns.

We're talking about how movements like this are causing actual change,

잘못된 정보에 영향을 미치는지 말하고 있습니다.

이제 시간이 얼마 남지 않았는데 끝내기 전에

actually impacting the way this game is played

꼭 알아두셔야 할 중요한 사실을 말씀드리고 싶어요.

and the misinformation that's lying to people

and convincing them of very dangerous ideas.

여기서 알 수 있는 중요한 교훈이요.

Now, before I leave, because I only have a short amount of time,

여러분이 무엇을 할 수 있고 제가 무엇을 했는지요.

저는 정보를 얻고 알리기 위해서

I want to give you one important thing to keep in mind.

엄청난 연구나 공부를 하지 않았어요.

One important takeaway from this all.

저는 심오하고 학구적인 과학 토론을 하지도 않았어요.

What you can do and what I did.

I didn't do amazing research and studies

전 그저 제 이야기를 했을 뿐이에요.

많은 사람들에겐 그거면 충분했어요.

and take information and present it to people;

실제 경험, 데이터 뒤에 숨은 진짜 사람들을 이해하는 데 말이죠.

I didn't have deep, intellectual, scientific debates with people.

All I did was share my story.

왜냐하면 데이터는 감명을 주지 못하거든요.

And that's enough for most people:

사람은 감명을 줄 수 있습니다.

to understand the anecdotal experiences, the real people behind the data.

그걸 기억하세요.

왜냐하면 어느 주제에 대해 말할 때,

여러분의 이야기를, 중요한 이야기를 할 때

Because data doesn't resonate with people.

사실을 말하게 되거든요.

People resonate with people.

And you have to keep that in mind,

데이터, 정보, 주제의 중요성을 말할 때

because when you are talking about a topic,

사실에 충실하게 된다는 겁니다.

and you're sharing your story, and sharing what is important,

제가 어떤 사람하고 대화하는데

그 사람이 백신이 왜 중요하냐고 묻는다면

you stay authentic.

전 다른 얘기는 하지 않을 거고,

Stay authentic to the data, to the information,

to the importance of this topic.

이것 외의 다른 답은 하지 않을 겁니다.

If I was talking to an individual

사람들이 죽어가고 있고, 이게 중요하다고요.

and they said, "Why are vaccines important?"

I would say nothing alongside any other answer,

아이들이 죽어가고 있고, 이게 중요합니다.

I would not in any way fathomably give them answer outside of:

그리고 있어서는 안될 질병이 발생하고 있으니까요.

존 보일이 말했듯,

people are dying, and that's important.

이런 질병은 역사책에 있어야지 우리 사회에 있어서는 안됩니다.

And that children are dying, and that's important.

이것 때문에 여러분은 진실의 편에 서야 해요.

And that we're having disease outbreaks that should not be here.

And I believe, as John Boyle put it,

직접 결정을 내리고 말하세요.

these diseases should be in history books and not in our communities.

"이게 맞아요, 이게 진짜예요,

So because of that, you need to make a personal decision to stand up for truth.

이런 거짓말은 잘못됐어요."

저는 그렇게 시작했거든요.

You need to make a personal decision for yourself

저는 한순간에 작은 마을에서 의회로 간 게 아니에요.

to say, "This is accurate, this is what's real,

자고 일어났더니 아이잭슨 상원의원이

and these lies are not OK."

백신에 대한 질문을 한 게 아니라고요.

Because it started with me doing that on a personal level.

모든 것은 느리게 진행됐고 이 한 마디로 시작됐어요.

I wasn't going from small town to Senate in a day.

"이건 사실이고,

It wasn't like, I go to bed, I wake up

우리 엄마는 믿지 않지만, 그래도 괜찮아요.”

and there's Senator Isakson, asking me questions about vaccines.

왜냐하면 이게 진실을 바꾸는 건 아니고

뭐가 맞고 뭐가 중요한가를 바꾸는 건 아니니까요.

It was a slow progression and it started with me saying,

"This is true,

그리고 솔직히 말해서 제일 중요한 건

my mom doesn't believe it, but that's OK."

무너지지 않는 것, 꺾이지 않는 것입니다.

Because that doesn't change the truth,

doesn't change what's accurate and what's important.

진실의 편에 서서 비난을 받았을 때,

And honestly, the biggest thing,

운동을 일으키려 한다면 흔들리지 마세요.

this whole idea of unbreakable: remain unbroken.
