Growing up in Mississippi,

Looking good made us feel rich, even if we weren't.

So it was interesting

because I remember having a myriad of conversations

about prison reform, the education system,

voter rights,

but a candid conversation about money,

돈에 대해 진지하게 이야기 한 적은 한 번도 없었다는 겁니다.

it never happened.

When I went to graduate school, my world expanded.

대학원에 진학하자 제 세계가 넓어졌어요.

Hearing my friends talk about their overseas adventures

친구들이 해외로 모험을 떠난 이야기들을 듣고 있자니 부러웠습니다.

made me envious.

I didn't even have a passport at the time.

그때 전 여권조차 없었습니다.

When I got my first job post graduate school,

대학원을 졸업하고 첫 직장을 얻었을 때

I was making 70,000 dollars.

제 연봉은 7만 달러였습니다.

I was rich.

부자였죠.

But that shopping spree at JCPenney's was no longer going to scratch that itch.

I needed to do whatever I could to be legit wealthy.

I think that’s why one of the many Oprah Winfrey episodes that I watched

On this particular episode, Suze Orman was the guest.

And for those of you who don't know,

Suze is an American author and financial advisor,

and she has the most perfect white teeth I've ever seen.

Well, Suze was talking about 401(k)s,

and I got the basic gist of what she was saying.

Save a little money now, have a lot of money in the future.

Sounded great, amazing, sign me up.

So I went to meet a wealth advisor, somebody I met off the internet.

그래서 저는 인터넷에서 찾은 어느 자산상담사를 만나러 갔어요.

I just knew that this random person was going to unlock some magical room

저는 이 사람이 어떤 마법의 방을 열어서

and give me all the tricks I needed to be wealthy.

부자가 되는 데 필요한 모든 비법을 알려줄 거라고 생각했어요.

I mean big house, fancy cars, luxurious vacation.

멋진 차, 호화로운 휴가, 큰 집, 이런 것 말이죠.

I was excited until I wasn't.

기대하고 있었는데 그 기대가 식어버렸습니다.

상점가에 있는 이 건물은 평범하기 짝이 없어서

The nondescript building in a strip mall

did not boost my confidence

that this was how the wealthy managed their affairs.

I was placed in a small white waiting room

저는 하얗고 자그마한 대기실에 앉아 있었는데

and I stayed there for what felt like forever.

기다리는 그 시간이 굉장히 길게 느껴졌어요.

Finally, a man came in who could not even bother

마침내 한 남자가 들어와서는

제 이름을 똑바로 발음해 보려는 시늉조차도 하지 않으면서

to learn the correct pronunciation of my name

and asked me what my goals were for the future.

앞으로의 목표가 무엇인지 물었습니다.

OK, I'm excited again.

이 질문에 답을 알고 있었기에 저는 다시 기대됩니다.

I know the answer to this.

Number one, I would like to retire comfortably by the age of 60.

첫째로, 저는 60살이 되면 걱정 없이 은퇴하고 싶습니다.

Number two, I would like to be able to take care of my mom.

둘째로는 엄마를 돌볼 수 있으면 좋겠고요.

His response,

그 남자의 대답은 이랬어요.

"I don't know why taking care of your mother is your responsibility."

He then went on to speak in some financial jargon

I could not understand.

The entire interaction took me so aback

남은 상담 시간 동안 최소한의 정보만 줘야겠다고 생각했어요.

that I vowed to share the bare minimum the rest of the meeting.

I could not figure out what I was missing,

제가 놓치고 있는 게 뭔지 알 수는 없었지만

but it made me question everything.

모든 것에 의문을 품게 되었죠.

Maybe I did not know what wealth was.

어쩌면 저는 부라는 게 뭔지 몰랐던 걸지도 몰라요.

Maybe wealth was not intended for people like me.

어쩌면 부는 저 같은 사람들을 위한 게 아니었을지도 모르죠.

어쩌면 제가 분에 넘치게 많은 걸 바랐던 걸 수도 있고요.

Maybe I was reaching for too much.

So I find it funny, or maybe serendipitous

재미있게도 제가 이제 항상 현금과 부에 대해 생각하는 게

that I think about cash and wealth all the time now.

바로 이 상담 때문이지 않나 싶어요.

For the last ten years,

지난 10년간 저는 미시시피주 잭슨에서 한 단체를 이끌어 왔습니다.

I've led an organization in Jackson, Mississippi,

that takes a radically community-driven approach to supporting families,

철저히 지역 사회를 바탕으로 한 방식으로,

mainly Black women,

that live in federally subsidized affordable housing.

Our programs are strategic and holistic.

A few years ago,

we became concerned that we were not moving the needle on poverty.

So we went to the women that we work with and we said, "What are we missing?"

Unexpected car repairs were leading to unemployment

because people could not get to and from work.

So we began to research how do you give money,

not another program, to people experiencing poverty?

매그놀리아 마더스 트러스트가 2018년에 출범했는데

In 2018, we launched the Magnolia Mother's Trust,

this country's first modern guaranteed-income program,

and the first in the world to center its efforts on Black women.

흑인 여성에 초점을 맞춘 세계 최초 사업입니다.

Quickly, for the uninitiated,

a guaranteed income is a specific amount of money

given to a specific population over a set amount of time.

It's typically funded by private philanthropy

대개 민간 자선 단체가 자금을 대는데

or in some instances, the public sector.

때에 따라 공공 부문에서 자금이 조달됩니다.

It's not a new idea.

이건 전에 없던 아이디어가 아닙니다.

Jenny Tillman, a mom and welfare activist,

엄마이자 복지 운동가인 제니 틸맨은

called for a guaranteed income way back in 1972,

and even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Nixon indicated

It's not a new idea,

but like I said, we are pioneers and our efforts are working.

We provide 1,000 dollars a month for 12 months to Black mothers.

There are over 100 guaranteed income programs

currently being implemented in this country,

and many were inspired by what we started

in Jackson, Mississippi, of all places.

Black women have ushered in a movement and it has been beautiful,

Now, I understand that the most basic definition of wealth

is what you own, minus what you owe.

And I also know we typically define it as having big cars,

One day I was having a conversation with Coco,

my family would have the money to cover my burial expenses."

Asking more and more women the same question,

I have come to learn that wealth is dignified funerals,

저는 부가 품위 있는 장례식이거나

the privilege of privacy,

the ability to complete school, own a business,

학업을 끝마칠 여력이 된다는 것, 자신의 사업을 가진다는 것,

or the thrill of being the extravagant auntie.

All of these are definitions of wealth to them.

Wealth is about a sense of agency, a sense of freedom,

부는 주체성, 자유 의지,

the collective well-being of the whole.

It is not an individual pathological pursuit.

한 개인의 비정상적인 열망이 아니라요.

For too long, we have allowed financial institutions

우리는 너무 오랫동안 금융 기관에게

to define wealth and the process by which we build it.

부의 뜻이나 부를 쌓는 방법을 정하도록 내버려 두었습니다.

I have never had a mother say to me,

제게 그 어떤 엄마도

wealth is having stocks and bonds,

부란 주식과 채권이 있고, 집 소유권에 내 지분이 있다거나,

equity in her home, or even a retirement account.

은퇴 계좌가 있는 거라고 말하지 않았습니다.

Instead, they dream about what a life of ease and care would look like.

Another case in point.

또 다른 사례도 있습니다.

I was having a conversation with a mom I work with,

and I asked if she had six months’ worth of savings

to cover an emergency.

She started laughing.

She could not even see herself in the equation that I was offering.

She said that "Before the Magnolia Mothers Trust,

I didn’t even have a savings account, let alone one month’s worth of savings.”

한 달 치 저축은커녕 저축 계좌조차도 없었는걸요.”

I said, "OK, let me ask the question differently.

그래서 제가 말했죠, “그럼 질문을 다르게 해볼게요.

What is wealth to you?"

당신에게 부란 뭐죠?”

She said, "Oh, that's easy.

“아, 그건 쉬워요. 매달 청구서를 다 내고도

All of my bills paid every month

with a little left over for anything extra."

다른 데 쓸 돈이 좀 남는 거예요.”

She knew exactly what she needed.

그녀는 자신에게 뭐가 필요한지 정확히 알고 있었는데

Our narrow definition simply did not address her needs.

우리의 얄팍한 정의로는 그녀에게 필요한 걸 헤아릴 수 없었죠.

Hearing these responses, time and time again,

I began to realize that we have to redefine wealth,

and we actually can redefine wealth.

And a way we do that is by listening to others

and then by being brave enough to listen to ourselves.

So of course, y'all,

I had to ask myself, what is wealth?

And I will admit to each of you all because we're best friends now --

That when I first asked myself this question, I started crying.

I realized that for over 20 years,

I had been holding on to a definition that was not written for me,

My ability to gather my people, to nourish them, to spoil them,

to make sure that we were protected and cared for

before we go out into the world doing the hard work of caring for others.

Please hear my words.

I am not saying that women experiencing poverty simply need space to dream.

빈곤에 시달리는 여성들에게 필요한 게 그저 꿈을 꿀 공간이란 말이 아닙니다.

If you all walk out of this theater with that,

여러분이 그렇게 생각하면서 여길 나서면 정말 화날 거예요.

I am going to be very unhappy.

What I am saying

제가 하려는 말은,

is that the space to dream mixed with cash

꿈을 꿀 수 있는 공간에 현금이 더해지면

can lead to transformation that can lead to true wealth.

진정한 부를 가져다 줄 변화로 이어질 수 있다는 겁니다.

It is my belief that we, all of us in this room,

저는 이 자리에 있는 우리 모두가

누구든 자신의 가치를 증명해야 하는 이 나라를 묵인해 왔던 것이

are made less [wealthy]

by virtue of tolerating a country where anyone has to prove their worth.

우리의 가치를 해쳤다고 생각합니다.

We may have 500 different definitions of wealth,

but we can all agree that we are all degraded by normalizing immoral inequity.

After all these years, I have finally --

all those years ago with that random wealth advisor.

I am emboldened and empowered to manage my wealth

아니오, 돈을 말하는 게 아닙니다.

and no, I don't mean money.

I mean, I am a loving daughter,

제 말은, 저는 사랑스러운 딸이고,

I am a mom who takes their boys on vacation

아들을 휴가에 데려오는 엄마이며

and you best believe I am an extravagant auntie.

그리고 통 큰 이모입니다.

We have a poverty of imagination about what makes you wealthy.

우리는 부유함이라는 관념을 확장할 필요가 있습니다.

I mean the things that people say about you at your funeral.

즉, 내 장례식에서 사람들이 나에 대해 말하는 것들 말입니다.

I mean legacy.

삶의 자취 말이죠.

But here's the thing.

중요한 건 이겁니다.

From where I sit, we can offer that kind of wealth to everyone.

제가 보기엔, 이런 부라면 모두에게 베풀 수 있습니다.

And yes, I am going to play on the word here,

말을 좀 다르게 해볼게요.

I can guarantee it,

제가 장담하건대

if we are simply willing to understand

작은 액수의 금융 투자가

that a small financial investment can change someone's life,

누군가의 삶을 바꿀 수 있고,

giving them the flexibility,

그들에게 각자의 방식으로 부를 정의하고 일궈낼 유연성과

breathing room and space

to define and build wealth on their own terms.

And that may be wealth defined by equity, love, honor and delight.
