That’s the beautiful growl of the world’s longest venomous snake:

the king cobra.

They’re the only snakes that build a nest to incubate their eggs.

녀석들은 알을 품기 위해 둥지를 만드는 유일한 뱀입니다.

Apt to their scientific name, Ophiophagus hannah,

“뱀을 잡아먹는 것“ 이라는 뜻을 가진 “오피오파구스 안나“라는 학명 답게

meaning a snake-eater, they eat other snakes,

서로 다른 뱀들도 잡아먹습니다.

including their own kind.

심지어 동족들도 잡아먹죠.

Growing up to five meters,

최대 5m까지 성장하고

they possess enough venom to kill 10 people in a single bite,

한 번 물기만 해도 성인 10명을 죽일만큼 충분한 독을 가지고 있습니다.

or even an elephant.

코끼리 한 마리도 거뜬하죠.

King cobras might be intimidating to most people,

많은 사람들은 킹코브라를 두려워 할 것입니다.

but I was always fascinated by them.

하지만 저에게 녀석들은 항상 마음을 사로잡는 존재였어요.

I've been studying this legendary species for the last 20 years.

그래서 이 전설적인 동물을 지난 20년 동안 연구해왔습니다.

Fifteen years ago,

15년 전,

I was bitten by a king cobra while rescuing it from a house,

어느 가정집에서 나온 킹코브라를 구조하다가 물린 적이 있어요.

which otherwise would have been killed.

구조하지 않았다면 사람들이 죽었겠죠.

There is no antivenom for Indian king cobra,

인도킹코브라 독에 맞는 해독제가 없어서

so I was certain I would die in about 30 minutes.

저는 30분 후에 죽을 거라고 생각했습니다.

The bite was in my hand.

손에 물렸었는데요.

The pain was moving up my arm towards the heart.

고통이 팔을 타고 심장까지 올라왔어요.

The pain was so excruciating

고통이 너무 심해서

that I actually begged the team to just let me die

사람들한테 그냥 죽여달라고 빌었어요.

rather than stay in agony.

견딜 수 없을 만큼 괴로웠거든요.

I remembered I had stocked a few vials of antivenom from Thailand,

그때 태국에서 해독제 몇 개를 챙겼던 기억이 떠올랐어요.

meant for Thailand king cobra,

태국 킹코브라용 해독제였죠.

which I decided to experiment with on myself.

그 해독제를 제 몸에 실험해보기로 했습니다.

But the Thai antivenom failed,

그런데 해독제는 효과가 없었어요.

and we had to stop the treatment.

치료를 중지해야만 했죠.

But here I am, a ghost?

그럼 지금 이 자리에 있는 저는 귀신일까요?

No, the king was kind.

아니요, 사실 저를 문 킹코브라는 관대한 녀석이었어요.

It injected a very small quantity of venom into my hand,

녀석이 아주 소량의 독을 주입해서

which wasn't enough to kill me.

제가 죽을 정도는 아니었던 거죠.

My mother hoped

저희 어머니는

that this near-death experience would finally stop my snake obsession.

제가 죽을 뻔한 이 사건을 계기로 뱀에 대한 집착을 멈추길 바라셨어요.

But no.

하지만 전 그렇지 않았습니다.

For those three painful days at the hospital,

병실에 있었던 고통스러운 3일 동안

all I wondered was if the king cobra was one species, as science believed,

학계 말대로 킹코브라의 종류가 과연 하나 뿐일까 생각했어요.

then why didn't the Thailand antivenom work on me?

그렇다면 왜 태국에서 가져온 해독제는 효과가 없었을까요?

It became apparent that we were missing something.

우리가 뭔가를 놓치고 있는 게 분명했어요.

King cobra was first described scientifically in 1836,

킹 코브라는 1836년에 처음으로 학계에 보고되었습니다.

after which many speculated there could be different species,

이후 사람들은 다른 종들이 있을 거라고 예측은 했지만

but no one had ever established it.

아무도 직접 발견하진 못했어요.

This became my research topic.

그래서 제 연구주제로 삼았죠.

For seven years after the bite,

킹코브라에게 물린 후 7년 동안

I traveled across king cobra habitat in South and Southeast Asia.

저는 남아시아와 동남아시아의 킹코브라 서식지를 여행했어요.

And this is what I found.

제가 찾은 사실은 이렇습니다.

King cobras, despite being the most curious, majestic snakes

킹코브라는 가장 진기하고 장엄한 뱀이라는 사실이 무색하게

are disliked, feared and hated by most people on the planet.

지구 상의 많은 사람들은 이들을 몹시 싫어하고 두려워합니다.

They're killed on sight for food, poached for skin,

보자마자 죽여서 요리로 만들고

밀렵해서 가죽을 벗기거나

for traditional medicinal purpose and for pet trade.

전통적인 약용으로 쓰거나 애완동물 거래에 팔기도 합니다.

And of course, their habitats are under severe threat,

당연히 그 서식지도 심각한 위협을 받고 있어요.

like many other species.

다른 동물들도 마찬가지고요.

But we also found an answer

하지만 저희는 해답을 찾았습니다.

to this 185-year-old question of species complex.

킹코브라 종 복합체에 대한 185년이나 계속된 의문에 대해서요.

My research has shown that king cobra is actually four distinct species,

킹코브라는 4가지 별개의 종으로 구성되어 있다는 사실을 알아냈습니다.

not one, as everyone thought.

모두가 생각했듯이 한 종이 아니었죠.

Now that is why the Thailand antivenom did not work on me.

그래서 태국 해독제가 제게 효과가 없었던 거였어요.

So what does this finding mean?

그러면 이것이 의미하는 바는 무엇일까요?

I found king cobras differed from each other

저는 킹코브라가 1에서 4%의 유전자 구성의 차이만으로

by one to four percent genetic makeup.

서로 종이 달라진다는 사실을 알아냈어요.

So what does this discovery mean for the king cobra?

이 사실이 킹코브라에게 어떤 의미가 있을까요?

Well, imagine there's a tsunami or an epidemic on an island

킹코브라 한 종이 서식하는 어느 섬에 쓰나미가 닥쳤거나

inhabited by a particular species of king cobra.

전염병이 퍼졌다고 상상해보세요.

We could lose that whole species.

우리는 그 종 전체를 잃는 겁니다.

In other words, one habitat destruction is the loss of an entire species

즉 서식지 한 곳이 파괴되면 종의 전체를 잃게 되는 것이죠.

we have yet to understand.

우리가 알아야 할 것이 또 있습니다.

Resolving species confusion is highly important

종의 보존 계획을 세우는 것과 생물학적 방제,

for the conservation planning, biological control,

질병 치료와 뱀에 물린 상처를 치유할 해독제를 위해서는

treatment of diseases and snakebite.

종 혼돈에 대한 문제를 푸는 것은 매우 중요합니다.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List

세계자연보전연맹의 레드리스트에 등록된

of Threatened Species,

멸종 위기종에 대한 자료에 따르면

king cobras are not given much attention.

킹코브라는 많은 관심을 받지 못하고 있습니다.

My discovery calls for an urgent reassessment of each species status

저의 연구결과는 이들이 처한 상황을 시급히 재평가하고

and conservation efforts.

종에 대한 보존 노력을 기울이길 촉구합니다.

As a direct conservation measure,

직접적인 보존 조치로서

we at Kalinga Foundation rescue king cobras from distressed situations.

저희 칼링가 재단에서는

위급한 상황에 처한 킹코브라를 구조합니다.

So far, we have rescued close to 375 king cobras,

저희는 이제까지 375 마리에 가까운 킹코브라를 구조했고,

monitored about 50 plus king cobra nests

50개 이상의 킹코브라 둥지를 추적 관찰했으며

and helped release over 500 hatchlings

500마리가 넘는 갓 부화한 새끼 킹코브라들이

back into their natural habitat.

자연 서식지로 돌아갈 수 있도록 풀어줬습니다.

We partner with communities

마을 주민들과 협력해서

and invest in creating awareness among local people,

사람들 사이에서 보존에 대한 중요성을 인식시키는 데 투자하고 있어요.

especially kids, who urge their parents to choose rescue over killing.

특히 킹코브라를 죽이지 말고 구조하자고

부모님께 설득할 수 있는 아이들과 협력합니다.

We encourage students to participate in our research

저희 재단의 연구에 참여할 수 있도록 학생들을 장려하고 있어요.

and conduct capacity-building training for snake rescuers and forest officials.

킹코브라 구조원들과 산림 공무원들에게 역량훈련을 시행하고 있고요.

King cobras are potential flagship species among snakes.

킹코브라는 뱀 중에서도 깃대종으로 지정될 가능성이 높습니다.

Declaring it as such will be a big win for the species,

깃대종에 지정되어 이 종을 살림으로써

연구를 이끄는 수석 과학자분들과

to my senior scientists and the forest they inhabit.

킹코브라가 서식하는 숲에 굉장한 도움이 될 것입니다.

What is interesting is these are the same tropical forests

흥미로운 사실은 이들의 서식지가 남아시아와 동남아시아의

of South and Southeast Asia,

모두 같은 열대 우림 이라는 것인데

which has seven of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots.

36곳의 생물다양성 핫스팟 지역 중 7곳이 이곳에 속합니다.

And these also contribute 68 percent to the global carbon sink.

이곳은 지구의 이산화탄소 흡수계에 68퍼센트나 기여하고 있어요.

In other words, my team and I are doing all we can

to say what we now know are four species,
