I was born in Terengganu,

a beautiful coastal state in Peninsular Malaysia.

Growing up in a superstitious, conservative community,

저희가 자란 공동체는 미신적이고 보수적이서

my siblings and I always had to follow the strangest rules

저와 제 형제들은 이상한 규칙을 따라야 했고,

that usually didn't make sense to me.

저는 그런 규칙이 이해가 되지 않았습니다.

Things like: don't whistle in the house,

예를 들면, 집에서 휘파람을 불지 말아라.

no nail clipping at night.

밤에 손톱을 자르지 말아라 같은 것들이죠.

And whenever we went out to play,

그리고 밖으로 놀러 나가면

we had to return home before sunset

해가 지기 전에 집으로 돌아와야 했어요.

or before it got dark.

어두워지기 전에 말이죠.

This particular rule made the night seem mysterious to me.

이 특이한 규칙 때문에 저에게 밤은 신비의 대상이었습니다.

I spent my school year admiring the dark,

저는 학창 시절을 어둠에 감탄하며 보냈지만,

but never got around to really exploring it.

어둠을 제대로 탐험해 보지는 못했어요.

As I got older, I was really drawn to beautiful nature.

나이가 들면서 아름다운 자연에 정말 끌렸어요.

While in mangrove forests,

맹그로브 숲에 있을 때

a forestry officer told me about kelip-kelip.

한 임업 담당관이 켈립-켈립에 대해 이야기해 줬어요.

A group of insects that can produce light

빛을 내는 곤충 무리들인데

that are easiest to see at night.

밤에 쉽게 볼 수다고 했죠.

Given my limited experience with darkness --

어둠에 대한 경험이 많지 않았던 저는,

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I decided to take a boat ride across the mangrove estuary one night

어느 날 밤 마음먹고

보트를 타고 맹그로브 하구를 건너

just to see what they look like.

그것들이 어떻게 생겼는지 보러 가기로 했습니다.

Well, the first 15 minutes of the journey was frightening.

글쎄요, 여행의 처음 15분은 정말 무서웠어요 .

It was pitch-black out there, and the river was choppy.

밖은 칠흑같이 어두웠고 강은 고르지 않았어요.

All I could hear was a faint breeze.

들리는 건 희미한 산들바람뿐이었어요.

As the river began to narrow,

강이 좁아지기 시작하자,

it was then that I noticed a mesmerizing sight.

그제서야 저는 매혹적인 광경을 발견했습니다.

Countless tiny flashes of light started to flicker on the trees,

셀 수 없이 수많은 작은 섬광이 나무 위에서 깜박이기 시작했고,

all flashing in almost perfect unison.

모든 것이 거의 완벽하게 동시에 반짝이고 있었습니다.

It was as if they were dancing to their own beat.

마치 각자의 박자에 맞춰 춤을 추는 것 같았어요.

That is the moment I will never forget.

그 순간을 절대 잊을 수 없을 거예요.

The moment I officially fell in love with kelip-kelip,

바로 그 순간 저는 '켈립-켈립'과 사랑에 빠지게 되었습니다.

known as fireflies in English.

여러분은 '반딧불이'라고 하죠.

The rest is history.

그다음은 말 안 해도 아실 거예요.

Now, I have been researching fireflies for more than 17 years,

저는 17년 넘게 반딧불이를 연구해왔고,

and I plan to spend my life

앞으로 평생을 바쳐

uncovering and supporting the worlds of these creatures.

이 생물들의 세계를 발견하고 지원할 계획입니다.

There are more than 2,000 firefly species that we know of,

지금까지 알려진 반딧불이는 2,000종 이상이며,

and they live all over the world.

전 세계에 걸쳐 살고 있습니다.

They are found in every continent except for Antarctica.

남극 대륙을 제외한 모든 대륙에서 볼 수 있죠.

Most of them have wings, and most species can emit light.

이들 대부분은 날개를 가지고 있으며, 대부분의 종이 빛을 낼 수 있습니다.

The light is produced by special organs under their abdomens,

빛은 복부 아래의 특수 기관에서 나오며,

and each species has its own unique light pattern.

각 종마다 고유한 빛 패턴이 있습니다.

Some glow continuously,

어떤 것들은 계속 빛을 내고,

while others emit discreet flashing patterns,

어떤 것들은 은은하게 깜빡이는 빛을 내기도 합니다.

almost like a secret code.

마치 비밀 암호를 보내는 것처럼요.

Fireflies are so much more than just pretty lights.

반딧불이는 단순히 예쁜 빛 이상의 의미가 있습니다.

They are an essential part of a healthy ecosystem.

반딧불이는 건강한 생태계의 필수 요소라고 할 수 있죠.

The life cycle of fireflies

반딧불이의 생애주기는

keeps the ecosystem balanced.

생태계의 균형을 유지합니다.

Each firefly species in its [respective] life stage

반딧불이는 각 생애 단계마다

has specific needs for a habitat to thrive.

잘 자라기 위해 특정한 서식 조건이 필요합니다.

They act as bioindicator

일종의 생물학적 지표로서

to ascertain whether a particular habitat is healthy or not.

특정 서식지가 건강한지 아닌지 확인할 수 있게 해주죠.

For example, in a mangrove forest,

예를 들어 맹그로브 숲에서

when you see a population of fireflies decreasing,

반딧불이의 개체수가 줄어드는 것으로 나타난다면

that could be due to water quality degradation,

수질 악화가 원인이 될 수 있으며,

which can be a sign of a collapsing food chain.

이는 먹이사슬의 붕괴를 보여주는 신호일 수 있습니다.

Why? Because firefly larvae eat snails,

그 이유는 반딧불이 유충은 달팽이를 먹기 때문에

and snails need good water quality to thrive.

달팽이가 잘 자라려면 수질이 좋아야 하기 때문이죠.

In terrestrial habitats,

육상 서식지의 경우에는

firefly population declines can be attributed to light pollution.

반딧불이 개체수 감소는 빛 공해가 원인일 수 있습니다.

They are extremely sensitive to artificial light

반딧불이는 인공 조명에 극도로 민감합니다 .

because this type of light

이런 유형의 빛은

can disorient, repel

방향을 혼동시키거나

or blind them.

눈을 멀게 할 수 있기 때문이죠.

So most of the time when you see a decline in firefly population,

따라서 대부분의 경우 반딧불이 개체수가 감소하면

you can bet other species that live in the same habitat

반딧불이 서식지에서 함께 살고 있는 다른 종들도

in which fireflies are found are also declining.

감소하고 있다고 볼 수 있습니다.

This is indicative of an unhealthy ecosystem.

생태계가 건강하지 않다는 뜻이죠.

This is bad for us, humans, too.

이는 우리 인간에게도 좋지 않습니다.

It is a sign of overdevelopment

이는 과잉 개발의 신호로서

that can induce climate effects such as flood and drought.

홍수나 가뭄과 같은 기후 영향을 유발할 수 있음을 나타냅니다.

As I delve deeper into the world of fireflies,

반딧불이의 세계를 더 깊이 파고들다 보면

I can't help but wonder

궁금증을 떨칠 수가 없습니다.

the fascinating mysteries that unfolded before me.

더욱 매혹적인 신비로움이 계속 드러나기 때문이죠.

It amazed me to learn that some firefly species

정말 놀랍게도

어떤 반딧불이는 숲을 혼자 날아다니며

prefer to fly solo in forests,

searching for light signals from their nonwinged mates,

날개 없는 짝이 내는 빛의 신호를 찾아 다닙니다.

while others choose to gather amongst trees

또 어떤 반딧불이 종은

바다와 육지가 만나는 곳의 나무 사이에 모여 있죠

where the ocean meets the land.

Equally intriguing is the fact that some firefly species have larvae

또 하나 흥미로운 사실은

일부 반딧불이 종의 유충은

that dwell in slow-moving rivers and ponds,

느리게 움직이는 강과 연못에 서식하는 반면

while others have larvae that stay on land.

어떤 종의 유충은 육지에 머문다는 것입니다.

I find it inspiring.

영감을 주는 것 같아요.

I find it inspiring to know

아직 발견되지 않은 종들이 정말 많을 거라는 걸 깨닫게 해주죠.

that there are so many undiscovered species hiding within them.

Imagine how many more remarkable firefly species

더 많은 놀라운 반딧불이 종들이 발견되기를 기다린다고 상상해보세요.

are waiting to be found.

And I have always wanted to find them.

그리고 저는 항상 그들을 찾고 싶었어요.

(Laughter)

But it can be hard.

하지만 힘들 때도 있죠.

There are other dangerous animals, too, at night.

밤에는 다른 위험한 동물들도 있거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

On one occasion, when I was in a place called Linggi,

한번은 링기라는 곳에 있을 때

I stopped at a tree with firefly colonies to collect a few specimens.

반딧불이 군락이 있는 나무에서 표본 몇 개를 채집한 적이 있는데요.

When we turned on our headlamps,

헤드램프를 켜자

we saw a row of red eyes.

빨간 눈이 줄지어 있는 게 보였습니다.

And soon we realized

그리고 곧 우리가 악어 떼에 둘러싸여 있다는 걸 알았죠.

that we were surrounded by crocodiles.

Sometimes the discovery of new species

때로는 새로운 반딧불이 종을

can be prompted by examining collections

자연사 박물관의 소장품들 중에서 우연히 발견하기도 합니다.

in the Natural History Museum.

In 2016, I went to Singapore

2016년 저는 싱가포르에 가서

and studied a firefly collection from Southeast Asia

리콩치안 자연사 박물관에서 동남아시아의 반딧불이 표본들을 연구했습니다.

at Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

I saw a firefly specimen lying in the collection

수집품 가운데 놓인 어느 반딧불이 표본을 보았는데

that did not match any of the descriptions that I knew of.

제가 알고 있는 어떤 설명과도 일치하지 않았어요.

There’s no name attached to it, and nobody knew what it was.

이름도 붙어 있지 않았고, 아무도 그게 뭔지 몰랐어요.

In fact, the first specimen of this unknown species

사실, 이 알 수 없는 종의 첫 표본은

was collected in 1989.

1989년에 채집되었습니다.

That is akin to a human adult living up to 30 years

이는 마치 한 사람이 이름도 없이 30년을 살았고

without a name

and without a proper description of this person.

이 사람에 대한 적절한 설명도 없는 것과 같죠.

(Laughter)

So my colleagues and I in 2018 went on a mission.

그래서 제 동료들과 저는 2018년에 임무에 착수했습니다.

We coordinated the first night survey to the habitat of this unknown firefly,

이 미지의 반딧불이 서식지를 찾기 위한 첫 번째 야간 조사를 시작했어요.

which happens to be the last remaining freshwater swamp in Singapore.

싱가포르에 마지막으로 남은 민물 늪지대에서 말이죠.

We spent three hours exploring

우리는 세 시간 동안 탐험을 했지만

only to be greeted by the empty darkness.

텅 빈 어둠만 우리를 맞이했습니다.

We went home disappointed and tired.

우리는 실망하고 피곤에 지쳐 집으로 돌아갔습니다.

Not to mention dirty and smelly from the mud.

더러운 진흙에서 나는 냄새는 말할 것도 없고요.

We went in again three months later.

그리고 3개월 후에 다시 들어갔지만

Still nothing.

여전히 아무것도 없었습니다.

At this point we thought, this is it.

그때 우리는 이게 끝이라고 생각했어요.

The species is gone for good.

이 종은 영원히 사라졌다고 생각했죠.

However,

하지만,

the third time's the charm.

세 번째에 행운이 찾아왔습니다.

During the third time visit to this swamp,

이 늪지를 세 번째 방문했을 때,

we saw a few tiny flashes

작은 반짝임을 볼 수 있었습니다.

start to show up and perch on ferns.

몇 마리가 나타나서 양치류 위에 내려 앉았죠.

It was such an amazing feeling

정말 놀라운 기분이었습니다.

despite having to wade through the muddy, swampy waters

진흙투성이의 늪지대를 헤쳐나가야 하고

and being feasted on by mosquitoes.

모기에게 물리는 와중에도 말이죠.

The itchiness was still worth it.

가려움도 그만한 가치가 있었죠.

(Laughter)

After two years of additional data collection and analysis,

2년 간의 추가 정보 수집과 분석 끝에

we confirmed that this unknown firefly species was new to science.

우리는 이 미지의 반딧불이 종이 새로운 종이라는 것을 확인했습니다.

(Applause)

It was also the first time since over a century

100년만에 처음으로

that a new species of firefly,

새로운 종의 반딧불이가 발견되었고,

a luminous firefly from Singapore, was found.

그것도 싱가포르에서 빛나는 반딧불이가 발견된 것이죠.

And so we named it Luciola singapura.

그래서 우리는 그것의 이름을 루시올라 싱가푸라라고 지었습니다.

There is a Malay saying.

이런 말레이 속담이 있어요.

(Speaks Malay)

(말레이어로 말함)

"If you are going to reach into the pickle jar,

“피클 병에 손을 뻗으려면

might as well put your whole arm in."

팔 전체를 넣는 것이 좋다.”

The further I have gone into this work as researcher and educator

이 연구에 더 깊이 빠져들수록,

말레이시아 모나쉬 대학교의 생물 다양성 보존 분야의

in the field of biodiversity and conservation

at Monash University Malaysia,

연구원이자 교육자로서

the more passionate I have become.

저의 열정은 더 커져갑니다.

I have transformed from a girl, a curious girl,

켈립-켈립이 무엇인지 궁금해하던 호기심 많던 작은 소녀가

wanting to know what kelip-kelip is,

to a driven scientist

전 세계 반딧불이 보호에 헌신하는 의욕 넘치는 과학자로 바뀌었습니다.

committed to safeguarding the fireflies of the world.

The problem is that firefly habitats are disappearing fast.

문제는 반딧불이 서식지가 빠르게 사라지고 있다는 것입니다.

We are now in a race against time to name species before they disappear.

종이 사라지기 전에 이름을 붙이려고 우리는 시간과 경쟁하고 있습니다.

I am a cochair of the IUCN Firefly Specialist Group,

IUCN 반딧불 전문가 그룹의 공동 의장으로서뿐만 아니라,

but it is also my personal mission

개인적으로도 제게 주어진 사명이 있습니다.

to collaborate, to work together with firefly lovers and stakeholders

반딧불이 애호가 및 이해 관계자들과 협력하여

to identify and conserve threatened firefly species everywhere.

멸종 위기에 처한 반딧불이 종을 식별하고 보존하는 것입니다.

Here's a flash of hope.

그래도 희망은 있습니다.
