And there's someone else in my life

who's equally shocked by this turn of events,

and that's my wonderful wife,

바로 아름다운 제 아내죠.

who literally has a degree in fashion.

아내는 말 그대로 패션 분야의 학위가 있답니다.

But here I am, standing with these two wallets.

여기 지갑 두 개를 가져왔습니다.

One of these is made out of leather,

하나는 가죽으로 만든 것이고 하나는 버섯으로 만든 것입니다.

one of these is made out of mushrooms.

And I'm not going to tell you which one is which.

어떤 게 어떤 것인지는 알려드리지 않을 겁니다.

보통 사람들은 구별할 수 없는데 그게 요점이라 할 수 있습니다.

The average consumer can't tell you the difference --

kind of the whole point.

Because even if you hate fashion,

패션을 싫어하는 사람도

you've got an entire room in your house devoted to it.

집에 패션 전용 공간이 하나쯤 있을 겁니다.

It's called your closet.

바로 옷장이죠.

And your closet is full of all kinds of materials --

다양한 재질로 된 옷이 많을 겁니다.

cotton, leather, nylon, polyester --

면, 가죽, 나일론, 폴리에스터 등 정말 다양하죠.

that list goes on and on.

And those materials matter,

옷의 재질은 중요한 요소입니다.

because those materials are the reason

옷의 재질 때문에 패션이 환경 문제에 부딪혔거든요.

fashion is in the midst of a sustainability crisis.

This is an industry that makes 100 billion plus items per year.

이 업계는 옷을 매년 천억 벌 이상 만듭니다.

When I started my journey, I thought this was going to be a really easy answer.

처음에는 아주 쉬운 문제라고 생각했죠.

We just consume less,

그저 옷을 덜 사는 겁니다, 더 좋은 옷을 더 조금씩 사는 거죠.

we have fewer, better things.

하지만 지난 10년간

But in the last decade,

I've come to believe that ignores fundamental realities

그런 해법은 패션과 인간의 본성에서

of both fashion and human nature.

근본적인 것을 충족하지 못함을 깨달았습니다.

You see, fashion is not purely functional.

패션은 기능성이 전부가 아닙니다.

It's about confidence, creativity, self-expression.

패션은 자신감과 창의성, 개성 등

It's a pure reflection of our innate desire, as humans,

사람의 원초적인 욕망을 나타내는 수단입니다.

to always want more.

욕망은 끝이 없죠.

And it satisfies our insatiable appetites

패션은 옷을 찾아내거나

to discover, buy, collect, show off.

구매, 수집하고, 자랑하고 싶어하는 우리들의 끝없는 욕구를 채워줍니다.

In truth, fashion is intrinsic to who we are.

사실 패션은 우리의 존재에 본질적인 것입니다.

There is a piece of good news, though.

그래도 좋은 소식이 있는데 패션을 환경에 이롭게 만들 수 있고

We can make fashion sustainable,

and we're going to do it with science,

과학으로 그렇게 할 것입니다.

and we're going to do it not by changing the humans,

사람의 본성을 바꾸는 게 아니고

but by changing those materials themselves.

재질을 바꿔서 그렇게 할 겁니다.

And lucky for us,

다행히도 이 문제를 해결할 방법은

the answers to all of fashion's materials problems

are available today, out there in nature,

자연 속에 있고 현재 사용할 수 있습니다.

and it's our job, as scientists,

저 같은 과학자가 할 일은

to go find the best inventions

from nature's four-billion-year catalog of greatest hits

and bring them to the world of design.

So I started a PhD,

and I actually fell in love with one of these materials from nature.

자연에서 나온 어떤 재질에 관심을 가지게 됐습니다.

And it's this -- it's spider silk.

바로 거미줄이죠.

It's this fine, elegant, tough fiber that spiders make.

거미가 만드는 가늘고 우아하지만 정말 튼튼한 섬유입니다.

You've probably seen a Spider-Man movie, you know.

영화 스파이더맨을 보셨겠죠.

You may have wanted to make Peter Parker's web slinger.

거미줄 발사기를 갖고 싶었을 겁니다.

It's OK -- I did, too; it's badass.

저도 그렇습니다, 멋지잖아요.

I wanted to recreate that material in a lab,

거미줄을 실험실에서 만들어보고 싶어서

회사를 설립했고 최근에 연구를 마쳤습니다.

so I started a company, and we did just that.

And the very first product we made was this:

거미줄로 처음 만든 제품은 끈입니다.

a tie.

I took the very first tie, and I sent it to Stan Lee himself,

cocreator of Spider-Man, idol to nerds around the planet,

all-around amazing human.

모든 면에서 대단한 사람이죠.

And he loved it.

아주 좋아하더군요.

He actually cold-called my phone from a blocked number,

사실 발신번호 미표시 번호로 제게 전화를 했고

우리는 기술을 찬양했습니다.

and we geeked out over the technology.

And back in those days,

당시에는 환경에 이로운 옷의 재질을 연구하는 사람이 거의 없었습니다.

almost nobody was working on sustainable materials in fashion.

So I excitedly ran off to go talk to designers and fashion executives.

그래서 흥분해서 디자이너와 패션 부서로 달려갔습니다.

And they thought this was fine, cool,

그들은 이게 아주 훌륭하다고 생각했는데

but they couldn't shut up about their problem with leather.

가죽 문제를 좌시할 수가 없었습니다.

And for really good reason.

Leather is one of the most pivotal materials in the fashion world.

In 2020 alone, the five biggest European luxury houses

2020년에만 해도 유럽 최대 명품점 다섯 곳에서

sold over 50 billion dollars of leather goods.

가죽 제품으로 500억 달러가 넘는 매출을 올렸습니다.

And the challenge with leather

가죽 제품의 문제점은

is that today, it's inextricably linked to raising cows,

이제 목축과 뗄 수 없는 관계라는 것입니다.

and not just a few -- like, lots of cows.

한두 마리가 아니죠.

And cows, at the global scale, are terrible for our environmental future.

세계적으로 보면 목축은 환경에 지대한 악영향을 미칩니다.

And so I left this conversation thinking,

나오면서 이런 의문이 들더군요.

"OK, what makes leather leather?"

“가죽이 인기 있는 이유가 뭘까?”

And the truth is,

소에서 가죽을 만들기 때문에

nobody loves leather because it comes from a cow.

가죽을 좋아하는 사람은 없을 겁니다.

We love it because it's strong, it's soft, it's beautiful.

튼튼하면서 부드럽고 멋지니까 좋아하는 거죠.

It plays from the runway in Paris to a rodeo in Texas.

그래서 파리의 패션쇼부터 텍사스의 로데오까지 쓰이죠.

So if we can take cows out of the equation,

소로 가죽을 만들지 않는다면

what's the thing we have to replicate to make a great material like leather?

가죽 대체품을 만들 때 어떤 특징에 주목해야 할까요?

And the answer is microstructure.

정답은 가죽의 미세구조입니다.

So this is a microscope image of the collagen in cowhide.

소가죽 콜라겐을 현미경으로 본 모습입니다.

And it looks like a mess,

복잡해 보이는 그저 뒤죽박죽 얽힌 섬유입니다.

it's just this jumble of fibers mixed together.

At its essence, that structure is why leather is both pliable and strong.

기본적으로 가죽이 부드러우면서도 튼튼한 이유죠.

Now, contrast that to your closet.

여러분의 옷장에 있는 것들과 비교해보죠.

All those materials are what we call knits or wovens.

그것들은 니트, 직물인데 현미경으로 관찰하면 이렇습니다.

They look like this under a microscope.

기본적으로 실 한 가닥으로 고리를 만들거나

Essentially, you take a single thread, and you loop it around itself,

엇갈리게 한 다음 직물을 만듭니다.

or you crisscross it over itself, and you make a fabric.

가죽처럼 놀라운 특징이 있는 새로운 재질을 만들려면

If we want to make a new material

with the same amazing properties as leather,

we need to go out and find a natural material

자연에서 소가죽의 콜라겐 같은 미세구조 재질을 찾아야 합니다.

with the same microstructure as the collagen in cowhide.

Now, my brain gets going with this,

이제 이 생각에 푹 빠집니다.

and I think, "OK, we can grow skin, we can grow pure collagen,

“피부를 배양할 수 있고, 순수 콜라겐만 추출할 수 있고,

we can use plant fibers ..."

식물 섬유질을 이용할 수 있고...”

Those all fail.

전부 실패했죠.

Quality, cost or scalability reasons tank those ideas.

특성과 비용이나 확장성 등 여러 문제로 실패했습니다.

And that's what brought me to the world of fungi.

그래서 균류로 넘어갔습니다.

I'm going to assume you all know what mushrooms are.

버섯이 뭔지는 다들 아시겠죠.

죽은 나무에 핀 버섯 사진을 몇 장 보여드리겠습니다.

I'm going to show you some mushrooms on the side of a dead tree.

And I'm much more interested in what's happening

표면 밑에서 어떤 일이 일어나는지가 저는 훨씬 더 궁금했습니다.

just beneath the surface.

Inside that tree are millions of stringy little strands

나무 속에는 수백만 가닥으로 얽힌

that are called mycelium,

균사체가 자리 잡아 나무를 분해합니다.

that are eating away at it.

They look like this.

이렇게 생겼죠.

So you see those white fibrous roots underneath the mushroom --

버섯 아래에는 균사체라는 흰색 섬유질 뿌리가 있습니다.

those are mycelium.

균사체는 가지를 쳐서 뻗어나갑니다.

They’re these long branch networks.

And what they're doing is eating dead stuff in the soil

흙 속의 죽은 생물을 분해해

and releasing nutrients to the mushroom and to the ecosystem around it.

버섯과 주변 생태계에 양분을 공급합니다.

And so now, I'm going to show you side by side.

이제 둘을 비교해 보죠.

Collagen on the left, mycelium on the right.

We're looking at microstructure;

I'm saving you six years of getting a PhD.

We're on to something here.

여기 뭔가가 있습니다.

But to pull this off,

하지만 이를 이용하려면 규모가 더 커야 합니다.

we need to do this at the scale of fashion.

균사체가 훨씬 더 많이 필요하고 연구실이 아닌 공장이 필요하죠.

We need a lot of mycelium. Not a lab, but a factory.

So that's exactly what we did.

그래서 만들었습니다.

So here, what you're seeing is our first factory,

저희가 만든 첫 번째 공장으로

and you're seeing rows and rows of pure mycelium

각 선반에서 순수 균사체를 배양하고 있습니다.

growing in these trays.

And those mycelium are eating leftover sawdust,

균사체는 톱밥을 먹고

so they're doing what fungi do best in nature --

균류가 제일 잘 하는 일을 수행하고 있죠.

they eat something nobody wants, and they turn it into something useful.

쓸모없는 것을 분해해서 유용한 것으로 만드는 겁니다.

And instead of growing into the soil,

여기서는 흙 속에 뿌리내리지 않고

these mycelium are growing up in these big puffy clouds

푹신한 구름 같은 곳에서 자라 쉽게 수확할 수 있습니다.

that we can easily harvest.

And this is where science has to meet design.

과학과 디자인 모두를 이용했습니다.

We take that material and turn it into something leatherlike.

이걸로 가죽과 유사한 재질을 만들었는데

It has to be beautiful, has to be functional.

아름답고 기능성도 좋아야 하죠.

And designers need to be able to easily incorporate it

디자이너가 기존의 패션 제품과 어울리게 만들수 있어야 합니다.

into the world of fashion products.

The first prototypes were none of those things.

첫 시제품은 그렇지 못했습니다.

But after many thousands of iterations,

하지만 수천 번 시도한 끝에

we have a material, and we call it Mylo.

마일로라는 재질을 완성했습니다.

And Mylo does everything we set out for it.

마일로는 모든 사항을 충족했죠.

It's beautiful, it's functional,

아름답고 기능성도 좋으며

but most importantly, it's sustainable.

무엇보다도 환경에 이롭습니다.

So when you grow mushrooms,

버섯 일 킬로그램을 키울 때는

it takes about a little under one square meter of land

일 제곱미터가 조금 안 되는 공간이 필요합니다.

to grow one kilogram of mushrooms.

Contrast that to cows --

반면에 소는

takes about 97 square meters of land to grow one kilogram of cow.

소고기 일 킬로그램을 만들려면 토지가 약 97제곱미터 필요합니다.

And when we're growing Mylo,

마일로를 키울 때는 고밀도 수직 농경을 할 것이고

we're doing this in high-density vertical agriculture,

and we power it with 100 percent renewable energy.

재생 에너지만을 사용할 것입니다.

And this is technology.

게다가 이것은 기술이고 끊임없이 개선할 수 있죠.

We're constantly getting better. Contrast that to the cow.

It's about as good as it's going to get,

and the cows really don't like it

when you stack them up in high-density vertical agriculture.

And so the question remains:

How are we going to distribute this material at global scale

to meet the moment?

안타까운 소식도 있습니다.

I have bad news for you here.

Historically, it takes decades

역사적으로 수십 년이 걸려서야

for a new material to reach global-scale adoption.

새로운 재질이 전 세계적으로 널리 쓰일 수 있었습니다.

Take spandex, that stretchy fiber.

이를 테면 신축성 좋은 스판덱스는

It's in your blue jeans, your yoga pants.

청바지나 요가 바지에 들어가서 엉덩이를 돋보이게 하는 재질입니다.

Makes your butt look amazing.

That material was invented in the 1950s,

1950년대에 발명되고

and it wasn't until the athleisure megatrend 50 years later

50년이 지난 후에야 크게 유행을 탔습니다.

that it was truly everywhere on this planet.

현실은 이렇습니다.

And thank you, climate change --

이제 기후 변화 때문에 50년을 기다릴 수가 없죠.

we humans don't have 50 years to wait.

We need to solve this problem.

문제를 해결해야 하고 새로운 재질이 지금 당장 필요합니다.

We need new materials, and we need them now.

이걸로 패션계를 바꿀 수 있죠.

And this is where fashion can be transformational.

So I went out and constructed what we call the Mylo Consortium.

그래서 마일로 컨소시엄을 설립했습니다.

These are fashion brands you know.

이들은 패션 브랜드들이죠.

Stella McCartney, lululemon, Kering and Adidas.

스텔라 매카트니와 룰루레몬, 케링, 아디다스 등.

Normally, fashion brands are renowned for their competitive nature

패션 회사들은 대개 공격적인 마케팅과 독점욕으로 유명하지만

and their desire for exclusivity.

But I was able to convince these brands

절대 혼자서는 기후 변화에 대처할 수 없다고

that no one group can solve this problem alone.

이들을 설득할 수 있었습니다.

And to meet this moment,

그럴려면 경쟁이 아니라 협력을 할 때입니다.

it was time to act in collaboration instead of competition.

We did just that.

우리는 바로 그렇게 했죠.

With the idea that we're going to solve this really big problem really fast.

이 심각한 문제를 아주 신속히 해결한다는 생각이었죠.

And here's a taste of how they're supporting Mylo.

it's their most iconic style --

with Mylo.

And Stella McCartney designed the Frayme Mylo handbag,

and debuted it on the Paris runway.

And that little black handbag that you see right there,

that's now part of Stella's commercial collection.

And what that means is that this is not some far-off idea

that's a dream that may one day be real.

Mylo's commercially viable today.

We sell it for 30 dollars a square foot.

It's about the price of premium calf leather.

And this -- this is the tipping point.

This is the first tangible proof that the future of fashion

can and will be made with sustainable materials.

And this is our road map.

이제까지는 가죽의 대체품을 찾아다녔습니다.

We went looking to nature for a better alternative to leather,

and we found that mycelium.

균사체를 찾았는데 맨눈으로는 볼 수 없었죠.

It was hiding in plain sight.

And this story, Mylo's story,

is just one small example in a much broader movement.

앞으로 내디딜 발걸음에 비하면 아주 작은 한 걸음일 뿐입니다.

It's the one I know.

But in the last few years,

countless scientists have joined us

in this journey of a sustainable materials revolution.

And in the coming years,

I think we're going to see amazing advances

that replace all the harmful materials in your closet,

옷장과 집, 차에서

환경에 해로운 재질을 모두 대체할 겁니다.

in your home and your car.

And my hope is that, by sharing this journey with Mylo,

it can act as a blueprint that these others can follow

모든 사람들이 따라 할 수 있는 청사진으로 만들어서

세상을 더 나은 곳으로 만드는 계획을 더 빨리 이루고 싶습니다.

to more quickly improve this world for all of us.

Because in my heart,

But fashion has a golden opportunity to lead the charge,

to live with nature, instead of against it.

And now, and in the future,

fashion's not just about making yourself beautiful.

It's also about making this planet beautiful and livable for generations.

인류를 위해 지구를 꾸미고 보호하는 수단입니다.
