What I've just described is my thought experiment

for this world called Planet City,

an imaginary city for 10 billion people.

The projected global population of the world in 2050.

가상 세계를 창조하는 것은

I design environments for the film and television industry,

and I believe that by creating imaginary worlds,

we can connect emotionally to the ideas and challenges of our future.

심화되는 기후 변화 문제에 대응하고자

이 행성 도시를 만들게 되었는데요.

새로운 세상을 창조하고 스토리 텔링을 전개하는 것은

So we've been creating Planet City

데이터의 시각화 그 이상이기 때문입니다.

in response to the rising red line on the graph of climate change

데이터를 각색 가능하게 도와주죠.

because world building and storytelling

can do so much more than just visualize this data.

그래서 가상의 도시에서는

오늘 날 우리가 마주하는 결정이 불러올

They can help us to dramatize data.

다양한 미래의 결과들을 미리 경험해 볼 수 있습니다.

그 경험은 경고의 내용일 수도 있고, 우리가 염원하는 미래 로드맵이 될 수도 있죠.

So in speculative cities,

we can immerse ourselves in the various consequences

of the decisions we face today.

They can be both cautionary tales or road maps to an aspirational future.

So I invite you all to join me as we journey along the canals of Planet City.

도시의 밭 하류를 비추며 내는

If we listen, we can hear the hum and crackle

흙과 하드 드라이브,

of flickering blue and red LEDs

as they illuminate the lower reaches of the city's farm fields.

새로운 야생을 뒤덮는 보랏빛 일출은 또 어떻고요.

It smells of soil and hard drives

and sweet fruit.

5년 전, 생물학자 에드워드 윌슨은

A purple sunrise over a new kind of wild.

‘지구의 절반’이라는 새로운 세상을 제안했습니다.

이는 대멸종을 피하기 위한 계획으로

So five years ago, seminal biologist Edward O. Wilson

지구 표면의 절반을 온전히 자연을 위해 헌신하고

proposed a new world he called Half-Earth,

남은 절반에 개발을 집중하는 계획입니다.

a plan to stave off mass extinction by devoting half the surface of the earth

바로 그 생각으로부터 행성 도시가 시작됐습니다.

completely to nature

and then consolidating human development to the other half that would remain.

And this is where the speculation of Planet City began.

And as we started to visualize and design

this radical reversal of our planetary sprawl,

we soon realized we could actually go much further.

Planet City could occupy as little as 0.02 percent earth.

Could we imagine coming to such a global consensus,

What would it take?

So our Planet City would allow us to surrender

세계를 위한 새로운 국립 공원이 생기고

almost the entirety of the globe to nature,

그것을 착취하고 개발하는 대신 돌보게 되는 것이죠.

to return stolen lands and rewild in our wake.

우리를 분열시켰던 보이지 않는 그 선은 이 숲 행성의 저편으로 사라지는 겁니다.

A new national park of the world to be visited and tended,

not engineered for extraction.

행성 도시의 거리에서는

The invisible lines that once divided us would fade beneath this planet of trees.

인류 지속을 위해 필요한

생활 방식의 변화가 시도되겠죠.

In the streets of Planet City

이 신세계로의 전환은

we can prototype some of the necessary lifestyle changes that might be required

강제적인 한 번의 변화가 아니라

천천히, 몇 세대에 걸친 한때 알고 있던 세상으로부터의 철수입니다.

in order for us to sustain human life.

We can explore how such a new world could evolve,

not in a singular forced move,

비오염 지역을 찾는 것이 아닌, 오래된 도시를 재개발하여 행성 도시를 만드는 것이죠.

but perhaps in a slow, multigenerational retreat from the world we once knew.

이 도시를 짓기 위해 새로운 자원을 소비하거나 착취할 필요는 없습니다.

To build Planet City, we could remine our old cities rather than virgin ground.

지구로부터 착취한 자원을 세계 이곳 저곳,

No new resources would need to be consumed or extracted to build this city.

쇼핑몰과 상점으로 실어나르고 있는

The world's shipping fleet that currently scatters matter ripped from the earth

그 자원을 우리가 만들고자 하는 이 새로운 도시의 지층으로

into our malls and storefronts

could be reversed

and repurposed to bring all this material back together again

into the geological strata of our new city.

The ghosts of nation states would give way to new neighborhoods

that could be formed around shared cultural practices

as we perform new myths of care, belonging and recreation.

행성 도시를 거니는 것은

If we were to map all the world's celebrations onto a calendar,

then we'd realize that running through Planet City

would be this continuous festival procession

dancing across a 365 day loop, each day amongst the flickering confetti.

새로운 축제 문화인 셈이죠.

It would intersect with the new carnival culture,

endlessly cycling through new colors, costumes and cacophonies.

대규모 재생 에너지 및 농업 부지를

And to design the systems of Planet City,

모하비 사막에 있는 세계에서 가장 큰 태양광 발전소,

we travelled to and filmed

all of the megascaled renewable energy and agriculture sites

시베리아의 잔혹한 겨울로부터 농작물을 지켜줄 따뜻한 조명이 비추는 실내 농장,

that currently exist around the world today:

중국 간쑤에 위치한 세계에서 가장 효율적인 풍력 에너지 네트워크,

the world's largest solar farm in the Mojave Desert,

the illuminated indoor farms protecting crops from harsh Siberian winters,

서호주에 있는 세계 최대 규모의 해조류 양식장까지요.

the most productive wind energy network in Gansu, China,

앞으로 우리 세대가 필요로 할

the world's largest algae farm in Western Australia.

기술의 대부분이

These monumental infrastructures

are evidence that much of the technologies required

행성도시에서는 이 모든 것을 저지하는

to support the generation of our climate

정치적 장애물이 없을 겁니다.

are actually already here.

And in Planet City, we just remove the political roadblocks

or the lack of cultural investment that's currently holding them back

and we visualize them operating at these global scales,

but not forgotten out on an industrial periphery,

but woven through the very fabric and life of the city itself.

수 천 개의 자동 세척날 태양광 패널을 닦는 끼익 소리가 들릴 겁니다.

세계 곳곳에서 수집된 10억개의 태양 전지판이

So before dawn breaks in Planet City,

thousands of autonomous cleaning blades squeak along the solar fields.

마치 파도가 치는 것과 같은 모습으로 움직이는 빛을 쫓겠죠.

Waves of mirrors will ripple to rotate to chase the changing light.

행성 도시의 전지는 물고기와 분홍빛 해조류 틈에서 숨을 쉴 겁니다.

A billion panels collected from all over the world.

초과로 생성된 풍력과 태양열 에너지는

운하를 따라 도시 상류 지대의 호수로

And the batteries of Planet City will be alive with fish and pink algae,

물을 끌어올리는 데 사용될 겁니다.

잠재 에너지로 저장되어 있는 거죠.

as excess wind and solar power

will be used to pump water through the canals

자원 집약적인 리튬 배터리의 형태가 아닌 모습으로요.

to high-altitude holding lakes in the city's upper floors.

밀물과 썰물은 빛과 터빈의 흐름과 회전에 따라 춤출 겁니다.

Power will be stored here as potential energy

rather than resource-intensive lithium batteries.

말도 안되는 상상 같지만

And tides rise and fall as the lights glow and turbines spin.

가상 세계는 충분히 현존하는 과학과 기술에 근거하여

만들어질 수 있기에

그 속에서의 우리 모습을 상상하는 것도 충분히 가능합니다.

So although wildly provocative,

imaginary worlds can be grounded

이 곳에서의 삶은 어떤 모습일까요?

in the real science and technology of the present moment,

전지로 흘러가는 호수에서 낚시를 하고, 빌딩 속 계절을 만나고,

meaning we can project ourselves into these futures.

행성 도시 양봉가와 함께 꿀을 수집하고,

What would it be like to live here, to fish amongst the city battery lakes,

수확 전의 분홍빛 조류를 보며 사랑에 빠지는 경험을 할 수 있겠죠.

to follow the seasons up through the towers,

collecting honey with the Planet City beekeepers,

행성 도시는 제안이 아닙니다.

to fall in love amongst the pink algae blooms before harvest?

도발에 가깝죠.

지구의 미래의 소재를 너무 먼 곳에서 찾을 필요가 없다는 것을 보여주는

So Planet City is not a proposal.

사고실험입니다.

However, it's a provocation.

100억의 인구를 감당할 이 시스템을 구축할 수만 있다면

It's a thought experiment that shows us

현존하는 도시를 재고하고 통합하는 데 있어 유일한 장애물은

we don't need to tread so hard across the Earth

because if we can get these systems working at the scale of 10 billion,

우리 자신 뿐입니다.

정치적 견해의 차이, 선입견과 편견, 사각 지대 같은 것들이요.

then the only things stopping us

rethinking and consolidating our existing cities is ourselves,

또 어떻게 보면

우리가 살고 있는 도시도 결국 이 행성 도시와 다름 없는 곳입니다.

our own politics and prejudices, biases and blind spots.

우리는 우리의 행성 지구를

아주 작은 세포의 크기에서 거대한 지각판의 크기로 발전시켰습니다.

So in many ways,

all of us have been living in a planetary-scaled city all along.

그렇기에 행성 도시는 완전한 허구이기도 하지만

We have urbanized our planet

이미 존재하고 있는 것이기도 합니다.

from the scale of the cell to the tectonic plate.

동시에 도전적이지만 충분히 있을 법한 내일의 모습이기도 하고

Planet City is both entirely fictional,

우리가 오늘날 마주하고 있는 환경 문제에 대한

but also already here.

절박한 깨달음이기도 하죠.

Simultaneously, a challenging image of a possible tomorrow

그래서 이 여정의 끝에서

and an urgent illumination of the environmental questions

이 공상 과학 사파리 투어의 끝에서

that are facing us today.

So at the end of our journey,

우리는 다시 출발점으로 돌아와 우리가 지금 살고 있는 도시를

as we've been wandering through this sci-fi safari through Planet City,

새로운 시각으로 바라보게 될 겁니다.

we will return to where we first started to look back on our own cities again,

이 여정은 실현 가능한 미래의 모습을 보다 선명하게 그려보고자 하는 시도였습니다.

우리가 앞으로 가고 싶은 방향을

but with new eyes.

This journey has been a call to actively visualize our possible futures.

함께 모색할 수 있는 상상의 세계를요.

Imaginary worlds in which we can collectively shape

where we all might want to go next.
