My passion for the poetics of everyday language

at a table full of loud, unstoppable women.

My five aunts plus my mom’s five aunts,

all smoking, some in their bras, some in their “rulos,”

みんな煙草を吸っていて ブラやカーラーを着けて

all complaining about the ineptitude of their husbands

夫の態度や食料品の値上がりについて

or the rising prices at the grocery store.

みんなで不満をこぼしていました

Some used grand gestures, pointing with their mouths.

口で指し示しながら 大げさなジェスチャーをする者もいれば

Others made up words.

新しい言葉を造り出す者もいました

Some yelled, some cried.

叫ぶ者もいれば 泣き出す者もいました

They were all narrating a similar experience,

みな似たような体験を 語っているにも関わらず

but each one of them put her own twist to her story.

それぞれが自分だけの ひねりを加えていました

Each one used a different word choice, a different rhythm.

それぞれが違う言葉を選び 違うリズムで話していたのです

My mom complained in silence,

母は首を振ってため息をつきながら

shaking her head and sighing.

無言で不満を表現しました

My Tía T used energized curse words,

Tおばさんは汚い言葉に魂を込めました

"That hijo de su madre," she would say.

「あの "hijo de su madre"（スペイン語）」

"That good-for-nothing son of a bitch."

「あの役立たず野郎」

(Laughter)

My great aunt shut her eyes, drank coffee and pointed at God.

大おばさんは目を閉じて コーヒーを飲み 神様を指差しました

"Diosito!

「主よ！

What is wrong with this man?"

あの男はどうしてこうなの？」

Each one putting a different tune, a different music to her story.

それぞれが異なる音色を 音楽をのせて話していた

As a kid, I sat among them in awe,

子どもだった私は圧倒されました

marveled at how elastic, how expansive,

言語のしなやかさ 拡張性 果てしなさに魅了され

how infinite language felt at the dining table, how fun.

なんて面白いのだろうと思いながら 座っていました

If my aunts didn't know a word, they would just make it up,

おば達は 言葉を知らなければ 勝手に編み出し

laugh about it,

その言葉に笑い合い

and stick it to their husbands' nicknames.

夫のあだ名にくっつけました

(Laughter)

The word would then be tossed around

その言葉はあちこち放り投げられ

and eventually become part of our intimate, familiar vocabulary.

やがて なじみのある親密な語彙の 一部になっていったのです

My family is originally from the coast of Colombia,

私の家族は コロンビアの沿岸部出身です

which is a region known for its magnificent storytellers,

素晴らしいストーリーテラーや 壮大な言葉で

its grand words,

よく知られる地域です

a region where made-up words are the norm,

造語は日常茶飯で 話すことには

where music and rhythm are essential to speaking.

音楽とリズムが欠かせない そんな地域です

I inherited the creative tongue from my aunts.

私は言葉の創造性を おば達から引き継ぎました

In Colombia, I was a loud, energized sucker.

コロンビアでの私は 騒がしく 活発でした

I wouldn’t shut up, I made up words, too.

黙るということを知らず 新しい言葉も造り出した

But the moment I moved to the States and landed in Miami,

でも アメリカに引っ越して マイアミに住むようになると

all that energy and love for language disappeared.

言語へのエネルギーと愛は たちまち消えてしまいました

It was here that I had my first encounter with language hierarchy.

初めて言語ヒエラルキーというものに 出会ったのです

I was 15 years old and we were reading "Romeo and Juliet" in English class.

15歳の時 英語の授業で 『ロミオとジュリエット』を読んでいました

I begged and prayed that I wouldn't be called to read Juliet's part

ジュリエットの台詞を読み上げなくて済むよう 心の中で懇願しました

because it was long and I didn't know what most of the words meant.

長い台詞で ほとんどの単語の意味が 分からなかったからです

But of course I was called to read Juliet's part.

しかし 願いも虚しく 当てられてしまいました

My heart sank.

心が沈みました

When I said I didn't want to, the teacher responded

読みたくないですと言うと 先生は

I will lose participation point if I didn't.

読まないと出席点をあげられない と言いました

OK, I had to read it.

どうやら やるしかないようです

I tried to push my tongue in impossible ways,

不可能に思える形で舌を押し付け

tried to echo the sound that I have been listening around me.

周りの人がいつも発している音を 再現しようとしました

But I butchered all the words.

どの言葉も失敗に終わりました

Everyone around me laughed

他の生徒たちは笑っていて

and the teacher just stood there silently.

先生は黙って立ったままでした

I remember clenching that desk, wanting to disappear,

消えてしまいたい 小さく 透明になってしまいたいと思いながら

wishing to be made small, invisible.

机をぎゅっとつかんでいたことを覚えています

I went home that day and told my mom I wasn't going back to school.

家に帰って もう学校へは行かない と母に言いました

The laughter and ridicule in school created deep fear and anxiety inside me.

学校で笑いものにされたことは 私に深い恐怖と不安を植え付けました

I spoke differently and this clearly was wrong.

私の話し方は周りと違っていて 明らかに場違いでした

It saddened me that I couldn’t access that part of myself

アクセントがついていること 新たな言葉を造ること

that was so excited about language

聞こえた通りに発音すること

because my way of speaking, with an accent

それらが間違いだとみなされたことで 言語の面白さや

or inventing words or pronouncing words as I heard them,

楽しさを 感じられなくなってしまったことが

was deemed wrong.

悲しかった

I said "sans giving" instead of Thanksgiving.

私は "Thanksgiving" ではなく "sans giving" と発音しました

I mix both languages:

英語とスペイン語を混合しました

"I have to 'plancha' it."

「"plancha" しないと」

"Give me the 'trapo.'"

「"trapo" を取って」

"Mom wants her 'chanclas.'"

「母さんの "chanclas" を 持ってきて」

"'Oye ye estas' ready?"

「"Oye ye estas" 準備できた？」

(Laughter)

I remember staying up late to practice pronouncing words

他の生徒に笑われないよう 遅くまで起きて

so the kids at school wouldn't make fun of me.

発音の練習をしたことを覚えています

I hated myself for not fitting in,

自分の経験が 大きなヒエラルキーの

not realizing that there was a hierarchy much bigger than me at play here.

一部であることも知らず 溶け込めない自分が嫌になりました

I felt I was the one who was wrong.

自分が間違っていると思ったのです

And it wasn't only me who was being corrected and laughed at.

直されたり笑われたりしていたのは 私だけではありません

I saw teachers correct some of my peers,

私の友達 たいてい白人以外の

usually anyone who wasn't white,

生徒の話し方を 先生が直しているのを見ました

shaming immigrant kids for saying "quota" instead of "quarter,"

移民の生徒たちに言って聞かせるのです 「"quota" ではなく "quarter"

“la pena bota” instead of “peanut butter,”

"la pena bota" ではなく "peanut butter"

“con flae” instead of “cornflakes.”

"con flae" ではなく "cornflakes" ですよ」

It seemed all of us were crossing an invisible language boundary.

私たちは 言語の 見えない境界線を越えているようでした

A boundary policed by the teacher and maintained by the students' laughter.

先生たちの監視のもと 生徒の笑いが維持している境界線です

Now let's take a step back and see what's really happening here.

ここで 実際に何が起きていたのか 俯瞰して見てみましょう

We tend to think of language, in this case English, as a closed circle,

私たちは言語を ここでは英語を 閉じた円と考えがちです

where all of us English speakers exist.

全ての英語話者が包含されている円

A closed circle where correct English is elevated at the center.

正しい英語が中心に掲げられている 閉じた円です

When someone says something in another language,

誰かが他の言語で話す時

we know it is outside of that circle.

その円の外側であるとされます

When someone speaks English with an accent or without proper grammar,

誰かがアクセントのついた英語や きちんとした文法でない英語を話す時

we know it is inside the circle,

円の内側ではありますが

but not correct, not at the center.

中心ではない 正しくないとされます

So we push both the language and the people who speak it

そうした時 私たちは 言語と話者の両方を

to the margins.

We really don't consider

言語を 強固な核をもつ

how looking at language as a closed circle with a solid center

閉じた円とみなすことで どれほど多くの人々を

excludes so many people,

話し方を 世界の見方を

so many ways of speaking and making sense of the world.

排除しているか考えないのです

How this in turn creates a hierarchy of language.

言語ヒエラルキーを つくり出すということもです

I learned about how this hierarchy isolates people the hard way,

母が正しく発音しないと その度に 食料品店のレジ係が

by watching the condescension of cashiers at the grocery store

横柄な態度をとるのを見て 言語ヒエラルキーがいかに

every time my mom wouldn't pronounce things right.

経験を通して 人を孤立させるかを知りました

By watching my mother shrink at every joke at her mispronunciation

母は自分の発音への冷やかしを聞いて 縮み込み

until she stopped trying to speak English altogether

ついには英語を発するのをやめ 恥じ入るように

and would just sit quietly in shame.

静かに座っているようになりました

My mother, who back in Colombia will call the manager,

コロンビアでは クーポンが読み取れないとマネジャーを

the owner if needed,

必要とあらば

when her coupons wouldn't scan because

オーナーを呼んで説明していたのに

“This rice is two for one, señorita, it says it right here.

「２個目の米は無料でしょ 店員さん ここに書いてある

Llámame el manager.”

マネジャーを呼んで」

(Laughter)

I can still see her, hand on hips, negating with her head,

今も目に浮かぶようです 腰に手を当てて 首を振って

articulating like homegirl got a degree in bargaining studies.

交渉術の学位を取得したのかと思うほど はきはきしていました

(Laughter)

My mom, the discounts queen,

値引きの女王である母は

would not leave until she felt justice was served

クーポンとお米の 正義が果たされたと納得するまで

between coupons and rice.

立ち去ることはありませんでした

Proudly bragged to her sisters about it later over coffee.

あとから コーヒーを飲みながら 姉妹に誇らしげに話したものです

I walked alongside her with a warm grounding feeling.

私はいつも 母の横で温かな 安心した気持ちで歩いていました

My mom could take anyone.

母は誰でも相手にすることができたのです

When we moved to the States,

アメリカへ移って

her sense of being a valued human being deserving of respect was destroyed

嘲笑され 横柄な態度をとられたことで 尊重に値する 価値ある人間であるという

by ridicule and condescension.

彼女の感覚は壊れました

As I slowly became aware of this hierarchy,

このヒエラルキーに 少しずつ気がつくと

I realized that my mom, my sister, my friends and me,

家族 友達 そして私自身が

we were all close to the bottom.

底辺に近いことを理解しました

We were on the margins of this circle and therefore of society.

私たちは言語の円の周縁 つまり社会の周縁にいたのです

We couldn't reach the center

民族的 文化的背景のせいで

because of our ethnic and cultural background.

円の中心に行けなかった

We sat in shame because our way of speaking wasn't as "refined."

I realize also that this hierarchy permeates all spaces

また このヒエラルキーは あらゆるところに浸透していて

and it's a gatekeeper when it comes to accessing resources and opportunities.

資源や機会へのアクセスを見張る 門番なのだと気がつきました

I wasn't hired on several jobs

「正しい英語」を話せないから

because I couldn’t speak “correct English,”

雇えないと言われたことが 何度かあります

the managers letting me know,

"We're just a little worried the customers won't understand you."

「お客様があなたの話を 理解できないか少し心配なだけです」

My writing also hasn't been published in many places

私の著作物は２言語が混ざっているので

because it mixes both languages and this is seen as less than, not pure.

My writing has been ridiculed in many academic workshops

where several times white writers have made fun

of my use of Spanglish out loud,

rereading the text for all to hear,

questioning its legitimacy as real literature.

My abilities as a student, a worker,

my value as a human being, has been questioned over and over again.

And yet.

There's beauty and connection in these marginal spaces.

この周縁の空間には 美しさとつながりが存在しています

For people in the margins, language creates cohesion between us.

周縁の者にとって 言語はお互いの間につながりを生むものです

That "different" way of speaking is a secret door

私たちの「違った」話し方は 限られた者だけが開けられる

only some of us have access to.

A door to an underworld of language freedom.

自由な言語の地下世界へつながる扉です

This world begins for me not in Miami,

私がこの世界に足を踏み入れたのは マイアミではなく

but in the former "Esta Noche" gay Latino bar here, in San Francisco.

ここ サンフランシスコにあった ラテン系ゲイバー "Esta Noche" です

Ten years ago, I moved to San Francisco in search of my freak tribe

10年前 私は自分の変わった民族性を 求めてサンフランシスコへやって来ました

and found the “queenas” tucked in a dingy bar on 16th Street,

そして16thストリートの薄汚いバーに集う "queena" たちに出会ったのです

ironing their wigs and filling up their bras.

彼女たちはウィッグにアイロンをかけ ブラに詰め物をしていた

Queena -- it’s a blend between “queen”

"Queena"ー "queen" とスペイン語で女王を意味する

and “reina,” Spanish for queen.

It was at "Esta Noche" that I learned

私は "Esta Noche" で LGBTの人々が

about the long history of LGBT people creating new words

to reflect our own histories, our own realities.

新たな言葉を生み出してきた 長い歴史を知りました

It was here that my passion for language bloomed again.

ここで 私の言語への熱が 再びよみがえりました

The story begins with the words.

全ては言葉から始まります

"Fierce,"

「獰猛だ」

"perra,"

"Perra"

"sissy marica,"

「シシー "marica"！」

"come here, butch papi."

「出てこい "Butch Papi"！」

Here, Spanglish blends with queer slang

スパングリッシュが クィア・スラングと混ざりあい

as drag queens take the center stage to the roar of the crowd.

観衆のどよめきに 女装したクイーンたちが 中央のステージに上がります

Here, there's unapologetic invention and creativity.

そこには 悪びれない発明と 創造性がありました

It is not only a mix of two languages,

それは単に２言語の混合である というだけではなく

but a constructing, a shaping of new words

私たち自身の身体やジェンダー

to reflect our own bodies, our own gender,

つながりを反映する 新しい言葉を

the ways that we come together.

Here, you don't have to be a man or a woman.

You don't have to be gay or straight.

Here, the categories for gender are infinite,

as are the words to describe body parts,

sexual orientation, feelings.

Here, language lets her hair down,

We all snap our fingers,

I stand next to someone with hot pink hair and a T-shirt that reads

"Gender queer cyborg."

Boys in crop tops yell, "Yes, perras."

They sashay up and down, twirling on the dance floor.

気取って前へ後ろへ歩き ダンスフロアをくるくる回る

"Serve," someone says,

「出せ」誰かが言うと

“Bring it,” someone responds,

「持ってこい」と誰かが答える

“¡Esa!” we all roar.

“¡Esa!” みんながほえる

We wear glitter on our bodies and glitter on our language.

私たちは身体にも言葉にも グリッターを纏います

We feel seen.

確かに存在していると感じられます

Our realities take up space

自分たちの存在感が

and therefore we experience a sense of belonging.

空間を満たし 一体感を経験します

We feel less alone, connected.

孤独感が薄れ つながりを感じます

We add a sense of magic and possibility to the world.

世界に 魔法のような 可能性の感覚を見出すのです

We make it less boring and more inviting.

世界が退屈なものではなく 魅惑的なものに見えてきます

Now think of the ways that you speak,

さて あなた自身の話し方 発する言葉について

the words that you use.

考えてみてください

Think of how you have borrowed words from your parents, your friends.

親や友達に影響されて 使っている言葉について考えてみてください

This is how you know you belong to those circles, right?

それらの言葉を通して くり返し用いることで

By echoing back that language.

帰属意識を感じるでしょう

The place where you grow up shows up in your accent, how you punctuate,

アクセントや間の取り方 母音の使い方などを通して

how you use your vowels.

生まれ育った場所が分かります

This is your very own language wardrobe.

言ってみれば自分だけの 言語のワードローブです

Each one of us has a different wardrobe depending on our background,

それぞれが バックグラウンド 民族性 教育へのアクセス 移住経験

our ethnicity, our access to education, our immigration status,

生まれ育った土地などによって 異なるワードローブを

the places that we come from.

持っています

Now consider how some of the most glittery,

最も輝き 創造的な 言語のワードローブのいくつかが

the most creative language wardrobes are erased,

存在しないものとされ スティグマを科され 見世物にされている

stigmatized or only seen as spectacles.

この状況について 考えてみてほしいのです

But what if,

反対に

alongside the language wardrobes we see and hear every day,

毎日見聞きする言語のワードローブとともに

we also allowed for the freaky, the weird,

型破りで奇妙な 理解できないものも受け入れたら

the ones that we don't understand.

どうなるでしょう

Wouldn't our world be that much more interesting?

世界はずっと面白くなると思いませんか

Wouldn't our notion of what it means to be human expand?

人間とは何かという概念が広がりませんか

What would happen if these different ways of using language,

英語を他の言語と組み合わせる

of mixing English with other languages,

新しい言葉を造る

of making up words, were not considered less than,

そうした言語の使用を 劣ったものではなく

but instead, manifestations of creative brilliance?

輝く創造性の表れと とらえたらどうなるでしょう

People are, after all, inventing, creating, mixing.

人間とは本来 発明し 創造し 組み合わせるものなのです

What would happen if, for instance,

例えば英語とスペイン語を

we didn’t see English and Spanish as mutually exclusive,

互いに排除する２つの言語ではなく

as two separate languages,

互いに重なり合う

but as open circles touching each other?

開いた円と考えてはいかがでしょうか

Imagine legislation written in Spanglish

スパングリッシュで書かれた法案や

or traffic signs written in queer slang.

クィア・スラングで書かれた標識

Imagine textbooks where children also learn words

子どもたちが言葉を習得する 材料である教科書に

such as “gender queer” and “queena,”

「ジェンダー・クィア」や "queena"

where they learn how to write, “Ahí te guacho mami.”

“Ahí te guacho mami.” といった 言葉が載っていたらどうでしょう

That playfulness will seep into our own lives,

その遊び心は日常生活に浸透し

lighten our worlds.

世界に灯りをともします

Maybe we would treat each other better.

お互いをもっと 尊重するようになり

Our daily interactions will be kinder,

日々の交流は優しいものになり

less uncomfortable and fearful around those who speak differently.

異なる話し方をする人の 居心地の悪さや不安が減るかもしれません

Less isolating and damaging for those of us on the margins.

周縁にいる人の孤独感と傷が 軽減されることになります

I want to invite us to suspend the idea of a "correct" way of speaking,

私は「正しい」話し方 言語の「正しい」使用という考え方を

a "correct" way of using language.

一時停止することを提案したいと思います

And let's allow for those rhythms,

そして周縁にある

those incorrect words at the margins to rise up.

リズムや間違った言葉が 立ち上がるのを受け入れるのです

Let's listen.

耳を傾けましょう

Recognize the glitter in each other's way of speaking.

お互いの話し方の中にある 輝きを見つけましょう

Activate that kid at the dining table

ダイニングテーブルで 言語とその世界に

who is in awe and curious about language and its world.

驚き 興味を示している子どもの 背中を押しましょう

That child listening to her tías drop their

おばさんが発する言葉に 耳を傾けている子どもです

"Ay, my goodness,"

"Ay, my goodness." や

as they drop their “Ajá, baby, come pa acá.”

“Ajá, baby, come pa acá.” に

Their endless possibility to bring surprise and magic through language.

そして 言語を通して驚きと魔法を 見せてくれる無限の可能性に

Let's dance "pegadito" with language.

言語で "pegadito" 踊りましょう

Let's tune into the ways that each one of us speaks.

ひとりひとりの話し方に 聞き入ってみましょう

The many different ways

ひとりひとりが

that each one of us make sense of the world.

どのように世界を見ているのか その異なる方法に
