began at 5 pm on Saturdays,

empezó a las cinco de la tarde los sábados,

at my abuela's dining room,

en el comedor de mi abuela,

at a table full of loud, unstoppable women.

My five aunts plus my mom’s five aunts,

Mis cinco tías más las cinco tías de mi mamá,

all smoking, some in their bras, some in their “rulos,”

todas fumando, algunas en sostén, algunas con sus rulos,

all complaining about the ineptitude of their husbands

todas quejándose de la ineptitud de sus esposos

or the rising prices at the grocery store.

o los precios en aumento de la tienda.

Some used grand gestures, pointing with their mouths.

Algunas usaban grandes gestos, señalando con sus bocas.

Others made up words.

Otras se inventaban palabras.

Some yelled, some cried.

Algunas gritaban, y algunas lloraban.

They were all narrating a similar experience,

Todas contaban la misma experiencia,

but each one of them put her own twist to her story.

pero cada una le ponía su propio giro a su historia.

Each one used a different word choice, a different rhythm.

Cada una usaba diferentes palabras, diferente ritmo.

My mom complained in silence,

Mi mamá se quejaba en silencio,

shaking her head and sighing.

sacudiendo la cabeza y suspirando.

My Tía T used energized curse words,

Mi tía T usaba malas palabras con efusión.

"That hijo de su madre," she would say.

“Ese hijo de su madre,” ella decía.

"That good-for-nothing son of a bitch."

“Ese bueno para nada hijo de puta.”

My great aunt shut her eyes, drank coffee and pointed at God.

Mi tía abuela cerraba sus ojos, tomaba café y le señalaba a Dios.

"Diosito!

“¡Diosito!

What is wrong with this man?"

¿Qué le pasa a este hombre?”

Each one putting a different tune, a different music to her story.

Cada una la ponía una melodía diferente, una música diferente a su historia.

As a kid, I sat among them in awe,

Como infante, me sentaba entre ellas con asombro,

marveled at how elastic, how expansive,

y me maravilló lo elástico, expansivo,

how infinite language felt at the dining table, how fun.

e infinito que se sentía el lenguaje en la mesa de comedor. Qué divertido.

If my aunts didn't know a word, they would just make it up,

Si mis tías no sabían una palabra, se la inventaban,

laugh about it,

se reían de ella,

and stick it to their husbands' nicknames.

y se la adjuntaban al apodo de sus esposos.

The word would then be tossed around

La palabra entonces sería lanzada alrededor

and eventually become part of our intimate, familiar vocabulary.

y eventualmente se volvería parte de nuestro vocabulario íntimo y familiar.

My family is originally from the coast of Colombia,

Mi familia es originalmente de la costa de Colombia,

which is a region known for its magnificent storytellers,

una región conocida por sus magníficos narradores,

its grand words,

sus palabras grandes,

a region where made-up words are the norm,

una región donde las palabras inventadas son la norma,

where music and rhythm are essential to speaking.

donde la música y el ritmo son esenciales para hablar.

I inherited the creative tongue from my aunts.

Yo heredé la lengua creativa de mis tías.

In Colombia, I was a loud, energized sucker.

En Colombia, era un ruidoso y enérgico.

I wouldn’t shut up, I made up words, too.

No me callaba. Yo también inventaba palabras.

But the moment I moved to the States and landed in Miami,

Pero el momento que me mudé a los Estados y aterricé en Miami,

all that energy and love for language disappeared.

Toda esa energía y amor por el lenguaje desapareció.

It was here that I had my first encounter with language hierarchy.

Fue aquí la primera vez que me encontré con la jerarquía del lenguaje.

I was 15 years old and we were reading "Romeo and Juliet" in English class.

Tenía quince años y estábamos leyendo “Romeo y Julieta” en la clase de inglés.

I begged and prayed that I wouldn't be called to read Juliet's part

Yo rezaba y suplicaba que no me llamaran para leer la parte de Julieta

because it was long and I didn't know what most of the words meant.

porque era larga y no sabía que significaban la mayoría de la palabras.

But of course I was called to read Juliet's part.

Pero claro, me llamaron para leer la parte de Julieta.

My heart sank.

Se me encogió el corazón.

When I said I didn't want to, the teacher responded

Cuando dije que no quería, el profesor respondió

I will lose participation point if I didn't.

perdería un punto de participación si no lo hacía.

OK, I had to read it.

Bien, tengo que leerlo.

I tried to push my tongue in impossible ways,

Traté de empujar mi lengua de formas imposibles,

tried to echo the sound that I have been listening around me.

traté de hacer eco del sonido que había estado escuchando a mi alrededor

But I butchered all the words.

pero destrocé todas las palabras.

Everyone around me laughed

Todos a mi alrededor se rieron

and the teacher just stood there silently.

y el profesor se quedó ahí en silencio.

I remember clenching that desk, wanting to disappear,

Recuerdo agarrarme fuerte del escritorio, queriendo desaparecer,

wishing to be made small, invisible.

deseando hacerme pequeño, invisible.

I went home that day and told my mom I wasn't going back to school.

Ese día regresé a casa y le dije a mi mamá que no volvería a la escuela.

The laughter and ridicule in school created deep fear and anxiety inside me.

Las risas y el ridículo de la escuela me crearon un miedo y ansiedad profunda.

I spoke differently and this clearly was wrong.

Hablaba diferente y eso evidentemente estaba mal.

It saddened me that I couldn’t access that part of myself

Me entristecía no poder acceder a esa parte de mí mismo

that was so excited about language

que se emocionaba por el lenguaje

because my way of speaking, with an accent

porque mi forma de hablar con un acento,

or inventing words or pronouncing words as I heard them,

o inventando palabras, o pronunciando como escuchara,

was deemed wrong.

se consideraba incorrecto.

I said "sans giving" instead of Thanksgiving.

Decía “día de grasas” en lugar de “día de gracias.”

I mix both languages:

Combinaba los dos idiomas:

"I have to 'plancha' it."

“Tengo que ‘plancha’ eso.”

"Give me the 'trapo.'"

“Pásame el ‘trapo.’”

"Mom wants her 'chanclas.'"

“Mamá quiere su ‘chancla.’”

"'Oye ye estas' ready?"

“Oye, ¿estás ‘listo’?”

(Laughter)

I remember staying up late to practice pronouncing words

Recuerdo quedarme hasta tarde para practicar mi pronunciación

so the kids at school wouldn't make fun of me.

y así en la escuela no se burlaran de mí.

I hated myself for not fitting in,

Me odiaba por no encajar,

not realizing that there was a hierarchy much bigger than me at play here.

sin darme cuenta que había una jerarquía mucho más grande que yo de por medio.

I felt I was the one who was wrong.

Sentía que yo era quien estaba mal.

And it wasn't only me who was being corrected and laughed at.

Y no era sólo yo a quien corregían y de quién se reían.

I saw teachers correct some of my peers,

Vi a maestros corregir a compañeros.

usually anyone who wasn't white,

Usualmente a todos los que no eran blancos

shaming immigrant kids for saying "quota" instead of "quarter,"

Humillando a niños inmigrantes por decir “cuota” en vez de “cuarto,”

“la pena bota” instead of “peanut butter,”

“la pena bota” en vez de “mantequilla de maní”

“con flae” instead of “cornflakes.”

“serial” en vez de “cereal”

It seemed all of us were crossing an invisible language boundary.

Parecía que todos estábamos cruzando una barrera invisible del lenguaje.

A boundary policed by the teacher and maintained by the students' laughter.

Una barrera vigilada por el profesor y mantenida por las risas de estudiantes.

Now let's take a step back and see what's really happening here.

Ahora retrocedamos un paso y veamos ¿qué está pasando realmente aquí?

We tend to think of language, in this case English, as a closed circle,

Solemos pensar que el idioma inglés es como un círculo cerrado

where all of us English speakers exist.

donde todos los angloparlantes existimos.

A closed circle where correct English is elevated at the center.

Un círculo cerrado donde el inglés bueno se encuentra al centro.

When someone says something in another language,

Cuando alguien dice algo en otro idioma,

we know it is outside of that circle.

sabemos que está fuera de ese círculo.

When someone speaks English with an accent or without proper grammar,

Cuando alguien habla inglés con un acento, o sin la gramática adecuada,

we know it is inside the circle,

sabemos que está dentro del círculo

but not correct, not at the center.

pero no en lo correcto, no en el centro.

So we push both the language and the people who speak it

Así que orillamos tanto al lenguaje como a la gente que lo habla

to the margins.

a los márgenes.

We really don't consider

Realmente no tomamos en cuenta

how looking at language as a closed circle with a solid center

que ver al lenguaje como un círculo cerrado con un centro sólido

excludes so many people,

excluye a tanta gente,

so many ways of speaking and making sense of the world.

a tantas formas de hablar y de darle sentido al mundo.

How this in turn creates a hierarchy of language.

Como es que en cambio esto crea una jerarquía del lenguaje.

I learned about how this hierarchy isolates people the hard way,

Aprendí que esta jerarquía aísla personas de mala forma.

by watching the condescension of cashiers at the grocery store

Al ver la condescendencia de los cajeros en la tienda

every time my mom wouldn't pronounce things right.

cada vez que mi mamá no pronunciaba bien.

By watching my mother shrink at every joke at her mispronunciation

Al ver a mi mamá encogerse con cada broma sobre su mala pronunciación

until she stopped trying to speak English altogether

hasta que dejó de intentar hablar inglés

and would just sit quietly in shame.

y sólo se sentaba en silencio avergonzada.

My mother, who back in Colombia will call the manager,

Mi madre, quien en Colombia le hablaba al gerente,

the owner if needed,

al dueño si era necesario,

when her coupons wouldn't scan because

cuando sus cupones no pasaban porque

“This rice is two for one, señorita, it says it right here.

“el arroz es dos por uno, señorita, ahí dice.

Llámame el manager.”

Llámeme al gerente.”

(Laughter)

(Risas)

I can still see her, hand on hips, negating with her head,

Aún puedo verla, las manos en la cintura, negando con la cabeza,

articulating like homegirl got a degree in bargaining studies.

articulando como si la chica tuviera un título de negocios.

(Laughter)

(Risas)

My mom, the discounts queen,

Mi madre, la reina de los descuentos,

would not leave until she felt justice was served

no se iba hasta que se sirviera justicia

between coupons and rice.

entre cupones y arroz.

Proudly bragged to her sisters about it later over coffee.

Le presumía orgullosa a sus hermanas más tarde en el café.

I walked alongside her with a warm grounding feeling.

Caminaba junto a ella con un sentimiento de calidez y calma.

My mom could take anyone.

Mi madre podía con cualquiera.

When we moved to the States,

Cuando nos mudamos a Estados Unidos,

her sense of being a valued human being deserving of respect was destroyed

su noción de ser un ser humano valioso, digna de respeto, fue destruida

by ridicule and condescension.

por el ridículo y condescendencia.

As I slowly became aware of this hierarchy,

Mientras me daba cuenta de esta jerarquía,

I realized that my mom, my sister, my friends and me,

noté que mi mamá, mi hermana, mis amigos y yo

we were all close to the bottom.

estábamos cerca del fondo.

We were on the margins of this circle and therefore of society.

Estábamos en los márgenes del círculo y, por lo tanto, de la sociedad.

We couldn't reach the center

No podíamos llegar al centro

because of our ethnic and cultural background.

por nuestro trasfondo étnico y cultural.

We sat in shame because our way of speaking wasn't as "refined."

Nos sentamos avergonzados porque nuestra forma de hablar no era “refinada.”

I realize also that this hierarchy permeates all spaces

También noté que esta jerarquía permea en todos los espacios,

and it's a gatekeeper when it comes to accessing resources and opportunities.

y cuida la puerta cuando se trata de acceder a recursos y oportunidades.

I wasn't hired on several jobs

No me contrataban

because I couldn’t speak “correct English,”

porque no hablaba el “inglés correcto.”

the managers letting me know,

Los gerentes me hacían saber,

"We're just a little worried the customers won't understand you."

“Nos preocupa que los clientes no te entiendan.”

My writing also hasn't been published in many places

Mis textos tampoco han sido tan publicados

because it mixes both languages and this is seen as less than, not pure.

porque combinan ambos idiomas y eso es visto como menos, no puro.

My writing has been ridiculed in many academic workshops

Mis textos han sido ridiculizados en talleres académicos

where several times white writers have made fun

donde muchas veces escritores blancos se han burlado

of my use of Spanglish out loud,

de mi spanglish en voz alta,

rereading the text for all to hear,

releyendo el texto para que todos escuchen

questioning its legitimacy as real literature.

cuestionando su legitimidad como literatura de verdad.

My abilities as a student, a worker,

Mis habilidades como estudiante, como trabajador,

my value as a human being, has been questioned over and over again.

mi valor como humano, han sido cuestionados una y otra vez.

And yet.

Y aun así...

There's beauty and connection in these marginal spaces.

Hay belleza y conexión en estos espacios marginales.

For people in the margins, language creates cohesion between us.

Para la gente de los márgenes, el lenguaje crea cohesión entre nosotros.

That "different" way of speaking is a secret door

Esa forma “diferente” de hablar es una puerta secreta

only some of us have access to.

que solo algunos de nosotros podemos acceder.

A door to an underworld of language freedom.

Una puerta a un inframundo de libertad lingüística.

This world begins for me not in Miami,

Ese mundo para mi comienza no en Miami,

but in the former "Esta Noche" gay Latino bar here, in San Francisco.

sino en el bar gay latino “Esta Noche,” aquí en San Francisco.

Ten years ago, I moved to San Francisco in search of my freak tribe

Hace diez años me mudé a San Francisco en busca de mi tribu anormal

and found the “queenas” tucked in a dingy bar on 16th Street,

y me encontré a las “reinonas” escondidas en un bar lúgubre de la calle 16;

ironing their wigs and filling up their bras.

planchando sus pelucas y rellenando sus sostenes

Queena -- it’s a blend between “queen”

Queena, es una mezcla entre ‘reina’

and “reina,” Spanish for queen.

y su homóloga en inglés.

Queena.

Queena.

It was at "Esta Noche" that I learned

Fue en el “Esta Noche” que aprendí

about the long history of LGBT people creating new words

sobre el gran historial de la gente LGBT creando nuevas palabras

to reflect our own histories, our own realities.

para reflejar nuestras propias historias, nuestras realidades.

It was here that my passion for language bloomed again.

Fue aquí que mi pasión por el lenguaje volvió a florecer.

The story begins with the words.

La historia empieza con las palabras:

"Fierce,"

“Feroz,”

"perra,"

“perra,”

"sissy marica,"

“marica,”

"come here, butch papi."

“ven acá marimacho, papi.”

Here, Spanglish blends with queer slang

Aquí, el spanglish se mezcla con la jerga queer,

as drag queens take the center stage to the roar of the crowd.

mientras las reinas drag toman el escenario al rugido de la multitud.

Here, there's unapologetic invention and creativity.

Aquí, hay invención y creatividad sin disculpas.

It is not only a mix of two languages,

No es solo una mezcolanza entre dos idiomas,

but a constructing, a shaping of new words

sino una construcción, un esculpir de nuevas palabras

to reflect our own bodies, our own gender,

para reflejar nuestros cuerpos, nuestro género,

the ways that we come together.

las maneras en las que nos unimos.

Here, you don't have to be a man or a woman.

Aquí no tienes que ser hombre o mujer;

You don't have to be gay or straight.

no tienes que ser gay o heterosexual.

Here, the categories for gender are infinite,

Aquí las categorías del género son tan infinitas

as are the words to describe body parts,

como las palabras para describir el cuerpo,

sexual orientation, feelings.

la orientación sexual, los sentimientos.

Here, language lets her hair down,

Aquí el lenguaje se suelta el pelo,

Gloria Trevi plays in the background as the next drag queen gets introduced

as a non-binary femme daddy mermaid of the revolution.

We all snap our fingers,

"Get it! Mami!"

I stand next to someone with hot pink hair and a T-shirt that reads

"Gender queer cyborg."

“Cíborg queer del género.”

(Laughter)

(Risas)

Boys in crop tops yell, "Yes, perras."

Hombres en tops cortos que gritan, “¡Sí, perras!”

They sashay up and down, twirling on the dance floor.

Se pavonean de arriba a abajo, dando vueltas en la pista de baile.

"Serve," someone says,

“Sirve,” dice alguien.

“Bring it,” someone responds,

“Dalo todo,” le responde otro.

“¡Esa!” we all roar.

“¡Esa!” rugimos todxs.

We wear glitter on our bodies and glitter on our language.

Usamos brillantina en nuestros cuerpos y brillantina en nuestro lenguaje.

We feel seen.

Nos sentimos vistxs.

Our realities take up space

Nuestra realidad tiene lugar,

and therefore we experience a sense of belonging.

y por lo tanto, experimentamos un sentido de pertenencia.

We feel less alone, connected.

Nos sentimos menos solxs, conectadxs.

We add a sense of magic and possibility to the world.

Añadimos una sensación de magia y posibilidad al mundo.

We make it less boring and more inviting.

Lo hacemos menos aburrido y más atractivo.

Now think of the ways that you speak,

Ahora piensen en las formas en las que hablan,

the words that you use.

en las palabras que usan.

Think of how you have borrowed words from your parents, your friends.

Piensen en cómo han tomado prestadas palabras de sus padres, de amigos.

This is how you know you belong to those circles, right?

Así saben que pertenecen a esos círculos, ¿cierto?

By echoing back that language.

Haciendo eco de ese lenguaje.

The place where you grow up shows up in your accent, how you punctuate,

El lugar en el que crecieron se nota en su acento, en su puntuación,

how you use your vowels.

en cómo usan sus vocales.

This is your very own language wardrobe.

Este es su propio guardarropa de lenguaje.

Each one of us has a different wardrobe depending on our background,

Cada quien tiene un guardarropa diferente dependiendo de nuestra historia,

our ethnicity, our access to education, our immigration status,

nuestra etnia, nuestro acceso a la educación, nuestro estado de inmigrantes,

the places that we come from.

los lugares de donde venimos.

Now consider how some of the most glittery,

Ahora piensen en como algunos de los más brillantes,

the most creative language wardrobes are erased,

de los más creativos guardarropas de lenguaje son borrados,

stigmatized or only seen as spectacles.

estigmatizados o vistos como espectáculos.

But what if,

Pero que pasa si,

alongside the language wardrobes we see and hear every day,

junto con los guardarropas de lenguaje que vemos y escuchamos diario,

we also allowed for the freaky, the weird,

también permitiéramos lo raro, lo extraño,

the ones that we don't understand.

aquello que no entendemos.

Wouldn't our world be that much more interesting?

¿No sería mucho más interesante nuestro mundo?

Wouldn't our notion of what it means to be human expand?

¿No se expandiría más nuestra noción de lo que es ser humano?

What would happen if these different ways of using language,

¿Qué pasaría si estas formas diferentes de usar el lenguaje,

of mixing English with other languages,

de mezclar el inglés con otros idiomas,

of making up words, were not considered less than,

de inventar palabras, no fuera considerado como menos,

but instead, manifestations of creative brilliance?

sino como manifestaciones de brillante creatividad?

People are, after all, inventing, creating, mixing.

La gente está, después de todo, inventando, creando, combinando.

What would happen if, for instance,

¿Qué pasaría si, por ejemplo,

we didn’t see English and Spanish as mutually exclusive,

no viéramos al inglés y español mutuamente excluyentes,

as two separate languages,

como dos idiomas separados,

but as open circles touching each other?

sino como dos círculos abiertos tocándose?

Imagine legislation written in Spanglish

Imaginen la legislación escrita en spanglish

or traffic signs written in queer slang.

o las señales de tráfico escritas con jerga queer.

"Men at Werk."

Imagine textbooks where children also learn words

Imaginen libros de texto en los que las infancias también aprendan palabras

such as “gender queer” and “queena,”

como “género queer” y “queena”.

where they learn how to write, “Ahí te guacho mami.”

Donde aprendan a escribir “Ahí te guacho, mami.”

That playfulness will seep into our own lives,

Esa alegría se filtraría en nuestras vidas

lighten our worlds.

y aligeraría nuestro mundo.

Maybe we would treat each other better.

Tal vez nos trataríamos mejor.

Our daily interactions will be kinder,

Nuestras interacciones diarias serían más amables,

less uncomfortable and fearful around those who speak differently.

menos incómodas y aterradoras para quienes hablan diferente,

Less isolating and damaging for those of us on the margins.

menos aislantes y dañinas para aquellos que estamos en los márgenes.

I want to invite us to suspend the idea of a "correct" way of speaking,

Quiero invitarnos a suspender la idea de que hay una forma “correcta” de hablar,

a "correct" way of using language.

una forma “correcta” de usar el lenguaje.

And let's allow for those rhythms,

Permitamos que esos ritmos,

those incorrect words at the margins to rise up.

que esas palabras incorrectas en los márgenes se levanten.

Let's listen.

Escuchemos.

Recognize the glitter in each other's way of speaking.

Reconozcamos la brillantina en las formas de hablar de lxs otrxs.

Activate that kid at the dining table

Activemos a ese niño en la mesa

who is in awe and curious about language and its world.

que está asombrado y lleno de curiosidad por el lenguaje y su mundo.

That child listening to her tías drop their

A esa niña que escucha a sus tías soltar sus

"Ay, my goodness,"

“Ay Dios mío,”

as they drop their “Ajá, baby, come pa acá.”

mientras sueltan sus “Ajá, bebé, ven pa’ acá.”

Their endless possibility to bring surprise and magic through language.

Su capacidad infinita de traer asombro y magia a través del lenguaje.

Let's dance "pegadito" with language.

Bailemos “pegadito” con el lenguaje.

Let's tune into the ways that each one of us speaks.

Sintonicemos las maneras en las que cada unx de nosotrxs habla.

The many different ways

La formas tan distintas

that each one of us make sense of the world.

en las que cada unx de nosotrxs le da sentido al mundo.
