EVERY DAY vs EVERYDAY What is the Difference? Learn English Vocabulary

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English words

These two words are commonly confused in English

especially in writing,

Let’s start with ‘everyday’.

'일상'부터 시작해보자.

It's one word and it's an adjective.

그것은 하나의 단어이고 형용사입니다.

It means something that is commonplace or usual.

평범하거나 일상적인 일을 의미합니다.

It's something that's suitable to be used on ordinary days.

평상시에 사용하기 적합한 제품입니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘Since we're just walking around town, I think I’ll wear my everyday shoes.’

'우리는 동네를 산책하고 있으니 일상용 신발을 신을 것 같아요.'라고 말합니다.

In this case, the word ‘everyday’ is used to describe these shoes.

이 경우 'Everyday'라는 단어는 이 신발을 설명하는 데 사용됩니다.

Here it means these are my usual shoes - you know shoes I wear on a normal day.

여기서는 이것이 제가 평소에 신는 신발이라는 뜻입니다. 제가 평소에 신는 신발이잖아요.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘The worries of everyday life can drag you down.’

'일상생활의 걱정이 당신을 끌어내릴 수 있다'입니다.

Here ‘everyday’ is used to describe worries.

여기서 '매일'은 걱정을 표현하는 데 사용됩니다.

What kind of worries?

어떤 걱정이 있나요?

Common worries.

일반적인 걱정.

Worries that are usual for many people.

많은 사람들에게 일반적인 걱정입니다.

Now, I will talk about ‘every day’.

이제 '매일'에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.

These are two words.

이것은 두 단어입니다.

It is an adverbial phrase about time.

시간에 관한 부사문입니다.

It means each day or daily.

매일 또는 매일을 의미합니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I need to start going to the gym every day.’

'나는 매일 체육관에 가야 해.'라고 말합니다.

Here, it means Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday all the way up till Sunday

여기서는 월요일, 화요일, 수요일, 목요일부터 일요일까지

- every single day.

매일을 의미합니다.

And the next sentence says,

그리고 다음 문장은

‘You need to study English every day.’

'너는 매일 영어 공부를 해야 해'라고 하더군요.

Just like the first sentence,

첫 번째 문장과 마찬가지로

this is saying you need to study English every day of the week.

일주일 내내 영어를 공부해야 한다는 뜻입니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we should use the two words’ every day’.

문장 중 하나에서는 '매일'이라는 두 단어를 사용해야 합니다.

In the other sentence, we should use the one word ‘everyday’.

다른 문장에서는 '매일'이라는 한 단어를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about where we use these words.

잠시 시간을 내어 이 단어를 어디에 사용하는지 생각해 보세요.

‘A’ says, ‘Are you busy _blank_?’

'A'가 '바빠요 _blank_?'라고 말합니다.

‘A’ is asking if ‘B’ is busy every day of the week.

A는 B가 일주일 내내 바쁜지 묻고 있습니다.

And so we use the two words ‘every day’.

그래서 우리는 '매일'이라는 두 단어를 사용합니다.

‘B’ says, ‘Yes, my _blank_ life is very busy.’

'B'는 '네, 제 _blank_ 생활은 매우 바쁩니다.'라고 말합니다.

We need to find an adjective to describe B's life.

B의 삶을 설명하는 형용사를 찾아야 합니다.

Something that means common or usual,

흔하다, 평범하다라는 뜻이 있으므로

so we need to use the one word ‘everyday’.

'매일'이라는 한 단어를 사용해야 합니다.

Let's look at it again.

다시 살펴보겠습니다.

A: Are you busy every day?

A: 매일 바빠요?

B: Yes, my everyday life is very busy.

B: 네, 일상생활이 너무 바빠요.

Now you know the difference between ‘every day’ and ‘everyday’.

이제 '매일'과 '매일'의 차이를 아셨나요?
