FUN vs FUNNY Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

In this video, I am going to talk about two similar and sometimes confusing English words

Let’s start with the word ‘fun’.

「楽しい」という言葉から始めましょう。

It is an uncountable noun or an adjective.

数えられない名詞か形容詞です。

It means pleasure and enjoyment.

それは喜びと楽しみを意味します。

Let's take a look at some examples.

いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says,

最初の文は、

‘I hope you have fun.’

「楽しんでいただければ幸いです」という

In this case, it's an uncountable noun.

意味です。この場合、それは不可算名詞です。

It's something that you can have.

いただけるものです。

It means a good time.

楽しい時間を意味します。

‘I hope you have fun’ means I hope you have a good time.

「楽しんでいただければ幸いです」は、楽しい時間を過ごせますようにという意味です。

‘Studying English is fun.’

「Studying English is fun.

In this case, ‘fun’ is used as an adjective.

」この場合、「fun」は形容詞として使用されます。

It means an enjoyable time.

楽しい時間を意味します。

Studying English is an enjoyable time or it's very enjoyable.

英語を勉強することは楽しい時間であり、とても楽しい時間です。

Now I will talk about ‘funny’.

今回は「面白い」についてお話します。

It's an adjective which means causing laughter.

笑わせることを意味する形容詞です。

We don't use ‘funny’ to mean enjoyable.

楽しいという意味で「面白い」は使いません。

So ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ are a little different in meaning.

つまり、「楽しい」と「面白い」は意味が少し異なります。

So be careful.

ので注意してください。

Let’s look at some example sentences.

例文をいくつか見てみましょう。

‘He told a funny joke.’

「彼は面白いジョークを言いました。」

This joke is meant to be funny.

このジョークは面白いことを意図しています。

It's meant to make people laugh.

人を笑わせるのが目的です。

And so we describe it as funny.

そして、私たちはそれを面白いと表現しています。

‘That is a funny TV show.’

「それは面白いテレビ番組です。

A lot of comedy TV shows make people laugh. They have jokes.

And so again, we can describe it as funny.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

In one of the sentences, we should use ‘fun’.

And in the other sentence we should use ‘funny’.

そして、他の文では「面白い」を使用する必要があります。

Take a moment to think about where we use ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

Person ‘A’ says, ‘Did you have _blank_ at the circus?’

人物「A」は、「あなたはサーカスで _blank_ を持っていましたか?」と言います。

The word ‘have’ is a clue that we need a noun.

「持っている」という言葉は、名詞が必要であることの手がかりです。

Remember, ‘fun’ can be a noun.

「fun」は名詞になる場合があることを忘れないでください。

‘Did you have fun at the circus?’

「サーカスは楽しかったですか？」

or did you have a good time at the circus?

またはサーカスで楽しい時間を過ごしましたか?

Person ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, the clowns were so _blank_.’

人「B」は、「はい、ピエロはとても空白でした」と言います。

Clowns make people laugh. They do silly things.

ピエロは人を笑わせます。 彼らはばかげたことをします。

So here, the word to use is ‘funny’.

ここで使う言葉は「面白い」です。

‘Yes, the clowns were so funny.’

「はい、ピエロはとても面白かったです。」

Now you know the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

これで、「楽しい」と「面白い」の違いがわかります。

They can be confusing, so please take the time to use them correctly.
