FUN vs FUNNY Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

In this video, I am going to talk about two similar and sometimes confusing English words

‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

fun과 funny에 대해 이야기해보려고 합니다.

My students always confuse these two words,

제 학생들은 항상 이 두 단어를 혼동하기

so I hope to clarify their meanings and usage in this video.

Let’s start with the word ‘fun’.

'재미'라는 단어부터 시작하겠습니다.

It is an uncountable noun or an adjective.

셀 수 없는 명사나 형용사입니다.

It means pleasure and enjoyment.

기쁨과 즐거움을 의미합니다.

Let's take a look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘I hope you have fun.’

'재미있길 바래요'입니다.

In this case, it's an uncountable noun.

이 경우 셀 수 없는 명사입니다.

It's something that you can have.

가질 수 있는 것입니다.

It means a good time.

좋은 시간을 의미합니다.

‘I hope you have fun’ means I hope you have a good time.

'I hope you have fun'은 즐거운 시간을 보내길 바란다는 뜻입니다.

‘Studying English is fun.’

'영어 공부는 재미있다.'

In this case, ‘fun’ is used as an adjective.

이 경우 '재미있다'는 형용사로 쓰입니다.

It means an enjoyable time.

즐거운 시간을 의미합니다.

Studying English is an enjoyable time or it's very enjoyable.

영어 공부는 즐거운 시간이거나 매우 즐겁습니다.

Now I will talk about ‘funny’.

이제 '재미'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It's an adjective which means causing laughter.

웃음을 자아낸다는 뜻의 형용사입니다.

We don't use ‘funny’ to mean enjoyable.

즐겁다는 의미로 '재미있다'를 사용하지 않습니다.

So ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ are a little different in meaning.

그래서 '재미있다'와 '재미있다'는 의미가 조금 다릅니다.

So be careful.

그러니 조심해.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

‘He told a funny joke.’

'재미있는 농담을 하더군요.'

This joke is meant to be funny.

이 농담은 웃기기 위한 것입니다.

It's meant to make people laugh.

사람들을 웃게 하려는 것입니다.

And so we describe it as funny.

그래서 우리는 그것을 재미있다고 묘사합니다.

‘That is a funny TV show.’

'재미있는 TV 쇼구나.'

A lot of comedy TV shows make people laugh. They have jokes.

많은 코미디 TV 쇼가 사람들을 웃게 만듭니다. 그들은 농담이 있습니다.

And so again, we can describe it as funny.

다시 말하지만 우리는 그것을 재미있다고 표현할 수 있습니다.

Now, let's do a checkup.

이제 점검을 해보겠습니다.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we should use ‘fun’.

문장 중 하나에서 '재미'를 사용해야 합니다.

And in the other sentence we should use ‘funny’.

그리고 다른 문장에서는 '재미있다'를 사용해야 합니다.

Take a moment to think about where we use ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

우리가 '재미있다'와 '재미있다'를 어디에 사용하는지 잠시 생각해 보십시오.

Person ‘A’ says, ‘Did you have _blank_ at the circus?’

A라는 사람이 '서커스에서 _blank_ 했어?'라고 합니다.

The word ‘have’ is a clue that we need a noun.

'have'라는 단어는 명사가 필요하다는 단서입니다.

Remember, ‘fun’ can be a noun.

기억하세요, '재미'는 명사가 될 수 있습니다.

‘Did you have fun at the circus?’

'서커스에서 즐거웠어?'

or did you have a good time at the circus?

아니면 서커스에서 즐거웠니?

Person ‘B’ says, ‘Yes, the clowns were so _blank_.’

B라는 사람은 '그래, 광대들이 너무 _멍하니'라고 말한다.

Clowns make people laugh. They do silly things.

광대는 사람들을 웃게 만든다. 그들은 어리석은 짓을 합니다.

So here, the word to use is ‘funny’.

그래서 여기서 사용할 단어는 '재미있다'입니다.

‘Yes, the clowns were so funny.’

'네, 광대들이 너무 웃겼어요.'

Now you know the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘funny’.

이제 '재미'와 '재미'의 차이를 알 것입니다.

They can be confusing, so please take the time to use them correctly.
