And in this video we are  going to talk about ‘puns’.

Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand. 

Va bene. Ora i giochi di parole sono molto difficili da capire.

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

Molto difficile da ascoltare. E molto difficile da usare.

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to

start making their own puns very soon. So this video is more for fun just to understand  

inizino a fare i propri giochi di parole molto presto. Quindi questo video è più per divertimento, solo per capire

a little bit of English word play. Now, what is a pun? 

un po' di giochi di parole inglesi. Ora, cos'è un gioco di parole?

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

Bene, un "gioco di parole" è una specie di parola usata in uno scherzo. E la parola ha due significati.

Okay. So to help you,  

Va bene. Quindi, per aiutarti,

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

faremo solo un esempio. E ho un esempio molto semplice qui.

‘Korea has Soul’ This is a pun. 

"La Corea ha un'anima" Questo è un gioco di parole.

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

La parola che è un gioco di parole è anima perché anima ha ovviamente due significati.

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. 

Ora, quando dico che la Corea ha un'anima, questa è un'anima.

That soul means, Korea has  some spirit or some energy. 

Quell'anima significa che la Corea ha un po' di spirito o di energia.

But of course it has another meaning. Because, soul, the spelling is different  

Ma ovviamente ha un altro significato. Perché, anima, l'ortografia è diversa

but the sound is the same. Seoul is a city in Korea. 

ma il suono è lo stesso. Seoul è una città della Corea.

So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind of  a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. 

Quindi, quando diciamo "la Corea ha un'anima", è una specie di scherzo perché "l'anima" ha due significati.

Okay. Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny. 

Va bene. Ora le battute di gioco di parole non sono davvero divertenti ahah.

Usually when someone says a pun  joke, everyone is kind of quiet. 

Di solito, quando qualcuno fa un gioco di parole, tutti sono silenziosi.

And maybe we hear crickets. So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  

E forse sentiamo i grilli. Quindi, se dicessi "La Corea ha un'anima",

maybe everyone's oh yeah. Okay. All right.

So let's take a look at a couple other  examples of pun jokes to help you understand.

I have two more examples here to  help you understand the pun jokes.

Okay. The jokes, they use a pun.

Again, they're not really haha funny. You just kind of okay.

So the next one here. ‘My bicycle fell… my

All right. So the blue word, that's the pun.

And again, a pun has two meanings. So why is this funny? or not?

So funny, too tired. Alright.

So again, two meanings. The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’.

Okay. The front tire and the back tire.

So has only two tires. So it fell.

But there's also a second meaning. It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired.

Alright. So that's what makes the pun funny.

There's two meanings. The next one - 

Ci sono due significati. Il prossimo:

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ 

"Ero un banchiere ma ho perso interesse". " Ero un banchiere ma ho perso interesse".

Okay. This is the pun. 

Ok. Questo è il gioco di parole.

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

Questa parola ha due significati. Il primo significato è "interesse" - sono interessato.

Okay. So he lost interest. 

Va bene. Così ha perso interesse.

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

Non è più interessato alle banche. Quindi non è più un banchiere.

That's one meaning. A second meaning is

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank. Vocabulary when you put money in the bank.

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest.

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year.

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest.

Which would mean he lost money. All right.

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings.

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore.

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay. 

E il secondo significato, ha perso dei soldi. Va bene.

All right, let's move on to one last one. All right, the last joke. 

Va bene, passiamo all'ultimo. Va bene, l'ultima battuta.

I'm going to show you actually has two puns. And you can decide if it's funny or not. 

Ti mostrerò che in realtà ha due giochi di parole. E puoi decidere se è divertente o no.

All right, here's the joke. So there's a question and answer. 

Va bene, ecco lo scherzo. Quindi c'è una domanda e una risposta.

The question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ 

La domanda "Come fanno le celebrità a rimanere cool?" " Come fanno le celebrità a rimanere cool?"

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents. 

Naturalmente, le celebrità sono persone famose, star, talenti.

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’ 

"Come fanno le celebrità a rimanere cool?" "Hanno molti fan".

Okay that's the joke. And as I said, there's actually two puns. 

Ok, questo è lo scherzo. E come ho detto, in realtà ci sono due giochi di parole.

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

Quindi la domanda: "Come fanno le celebrità a rimanere cool?" Ok.

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

So cool ha due significati. Il primo significato è fresco, freddo.

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

Va bene. Non caldo non caldo. Quindi come fanno a rimanere freddi?

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

Il secondo significato è figo, sai indossi gli occhiali da sole, sono fighi.

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool. 

Va bene. Molto bene. Molto bello. Quindi i due significati di cool.

They have many fans of course. There's the pun. 

Hanno molti fan, naturalmente. C'è il gioco di parole.

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

E il gioco di parole ha due significati. Il primo significato è fan.

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan. 

Quando hai caldo, hai la macchina che soffia aria. Quello è il ventilatore.

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous  

E, naturalmente, l'altro significato, il secondo significato di fan è, quando sei molto famoso

and popular people like you, they're your fans. They're screaming and they want your signature,

Okay. So, ‘How do a celebrity stay cool?’

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here.

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’

Okay, yeah, well, these are pun jokes. Some people like them - very advanced English. 

Ok, sì, beh, queste sono barzellette. Ad alcune persone piacciono - inglese molto avanzato.

Okay because you have to know, you have to have  a very good vocabulary, you have to know the word  

Va bene perché devi sapere, devi avere un ottimo vocabolario, devi conoscere la parola

and it's two meanings to understand the joke. All right. That's it.
