And in this video we are  going to talk about ‘puns’. 

그리고 이 동영상에서는 '말장난'에 대해 이야기할 것입니다.

Okay. Now puns are very difficult to understand. 

좋아요. 이제 말장난은 이해하기가 매우 어렵습니다.

Very difficult to hear. And very difficult to use. 

듣기가 매우 어렵습니다. 그리고 사용하기가 매우 어렵습니다.

So this video is an advanced video  and I don't expect my students to

start making their own puns very soon. So this video is more for fun just to understand

a little bit of English word play. Now, what is a pun?

Well, a ‘pun’ is kind of a word used in a joke. And the word has two meanings. 

음, '말장난'은 농담에 사용되는 단어입니다. 그리고 그 단어에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다.

Okay. So to help you,  

좋아요. 그래서 여러분을 돕기 위해

we're just going to jump into an example. And I have a very simple example here. 

바로 예를 들어 보겠습니다. 여기에 매우 간단한 예가 있습니다.

‘Korea has Soul’ This is a pun. 

한국에는 영혼이 있다'는 말장난이다.

The word that is a pun is soul because  soul has two meanings of course. 

말장난이라는 단어는 영혼입니다. 영혼에는 물론 두 가지 의미가 있기 때문입니다.

Now, when I say Korea has soul, this is s o u l. 

이제 내가 한국에 영혼이 있다고 하면 이것이 영혼이다.

That soul means, Korea has  some spirit or some energy. 

그 영혼은 한국에 정신이나 에너지가 있음을 의미합니다.

But of course it has another meaning. Because, soul, the spelling is different  

그러나 물론 다른 의미도 있습니다. 영혼아, 철자는 다르지만

but the sound is the same. Seoul is a city in Korea. 

소리는 같으니까. 서울은 한국의 도시입니다.

So when we say ‘Korea has soul’, it's kind of  a joke because the ‘soul’ has two meanings. 

그래서 우리가 '한국에는 영혼이 있다'라고 말할 때 '혼'에는 두 가지 의미가 있기 때문에 일종의 농담입니다.

Okay. Now pun jokes are kind of not really haha funny. 

좋아요. 이제 말장난은 별로 하하 웃기지 않습니다.

Usually when someone says a pun  joke, everyone is kind of quiet. 

일반적으로 누군가 말장난을 하면 모두 조용해집니다.

And maybe we hear crickets. So if I said ‘Korea has soul’,  

귀뚜라미 소리가 들릴 수도 있습니다. 그래서 내가 '한국에는 영혼이 있다'고 하면

maybe everyone's oh yeah. Okay. All right. 

아마 모두가 오 예일 것입니다. 좋아요. 괜찮은.

So let's take a look at a couple other  examples of pun jokes to help you understand. 

이해를 돕기 위해 몇 가지 다른 말장난의 예를 살펴보겠습니다. 말장난을 이해하는 데 도움이 되는

I have two more examples here to  help you understand the pun jokes.

Okay. The jokes, they use a pun.

Again, they're not really haha funny. You just kind of okay.

So the next one here. ‘My bicycle fell… my

All right. So the blue word, that's the pun.

And again, a pun has two meanings. So why is this funny? or not?

So funny, too tired. Alright. 

너무 재미 있고 너무 피곤합니다. 괜찮은.

So again, two meanings. The first meaning, my bicycle has ‘two tires’. 

다시, 두 가지 의미. 첫 번째 의미, 내 자전거에는 '두 개의 타이어'가 있습니다.

Okay. The front tire and the back tire. 

좋아요. 앞 타이어와 뒷 타이어입니다.

So has only two tires. So it fell. 

따라서 타이어가 두 개뿐입니다. 그래서 떨어졌다.

But there's also a second meaning. It's ‘two tired’ sounds like t-o-o, very tired. 

그러나 두 번째 의미도 있습니다. '두 피곤'은 t-o-o처럼 들립니다. 매우 피곤합니다.

So a bicycle fell because it's very tired. Alright. 

그래서 자전거가 너무 피곤해서 넘어졌습니다. 괜찮은.

So ‘two tired’ sounds like ‘too tired’. And too tired, very tired. 

그래서 '두 피곤하다'는 '너무 피곤하다'처럼 들립니다. 너무 피곤하고 매우 피곤합니다.

Alright. So that's what makes the pun funny. 

괜찮은. 그래서 말장난이 재미있습니다.

There's two meanings. The next one - 

두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 다음 질문 -

‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ ‘I used to be a banker but I lost interest.’ 

'나는 은행원이었지만 흥미를 잃었어.' ' 나는 은행원이었지만 흥미를 잃었어.'

Okay. This is the pun. 

알았어. 이것은 말장난입니다.

This word has two meanings. The first meaning is ‘interest’ - I'm interested. 

이 단어에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 'interest'입니다. 관심이 있어요.

Okay. So he lost interest. 

좋아요. 그래서 그는 흥미를 잃었다.

He's no longer interested in banking. So he's not a banker anymore. 

그는 더 이상 은행 업무에 관심이 없습니다. 그래서 그는 더 이상 은행가가 아닙니다.

That's one meaning. A second meaning is

‘interest’ is actually a bank term bank. Vocabulary when you put money in the bank.

Okay. Every year the bank will give you interest.

For example, six percent or 4 percent. They give you interest every year.

So he's not a banker anymore  because he lost interest.

Which would mean he lost money. All right.

So this is funny. ‘I used to be a bank but I lost interest’

Because ‘interest’ is a pun. It has two meanings.

First meaning, he's not interested  in the banking business anymore.

And the second meaning, he lost some money. Okay.

All right, let's move on to one last one. All right, the last joke.

I'm going to show you actually has two puns. And you can decide if it's funny or not.

All right, here's the joke. So there's a question and answer.

The question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ 

'연예인은 어떻게 멋져?'라는 질문 ' 연예인은 어떻게 멋져?'

Of course, celebrities are  famous people, stars, talents. 

‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans.’ 

'연예인은 어떻게 멋있게 지내?' '팬이 많다.'

Okay that's the joke. And as I said, there's actually two puns. 

그래 농담이야. 그리고 내가 말했듯이 실제로 두 가지 말장난이 있습니다.

So the question, ‘How do celebrities stay cool?’ Okay. 

그래서 '연예인은 어떻게 멋있게 지내나요?'라는 질문이요 .

So cool has two meanings. The first meaning is cool, cold. 

so cool에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 차갑다, 차갑다.

Okay. Not hot not warm. So how do they stay cold? 

좋아요. 덥지도 덥지도 않은. 그래서 그들은 어떻게 추위를 유지합니까? 두

The second meaning is, cool, you know  wearing sunglasses, they're cool. 

번째 의미는 ' 선글라스를 쓰면 멋지다'는 뜻입니다.

All right. Very good. Very cool. So the two meanings of cool.

They have many fans of course. There's the pun.

And the pun has two meanings. The first meaning is fan. 

그리고 말장난에는 두 가지 의미가 있습니다. 첫 번째 의미는 팬입니다.

When you're hot, you have the machine blowing air. That's the fan.

And of course, the other meaning, the second  meaning of fan is, when you're very famous

So this is funny because we can  recognize there's two meanings here.

So you could read this the first way, ‘How do celebrities stay cool (not hot)?’ 

그래서 첫 번째 방법으로 '연예인은 어떻게 쿨하게(덥지 않게) 지내나요?'를 읽을 수 있습니다

‘They have many fans,’  machines blowing to stay cool.

Or ‘How do celebrity stay cool?’ ‘They have many fans,’ people screaming. 

또는 '연예인은 어떻게 멋있게 지내?', '팬이 많다'고 외치는 사람들.

All right. Funny? 

괜찮은. 재미있는?

Okay, yeah, well, these are pun jokes. Some people like them - very advanced English. 

그래, 그래, 이건 말장난이야. 어떤 사람들은 그것들을 좋아합니다 - 매우 고급 영어입니다.

Okay because you have to know, you have to have  a very good vocabulary, you have to know the word  

좋아요, 왜냐하면 당신은 알아야 하고, 아주 좋은 어휘를 가지고 있어야 하고, 그 단어를 알아야

and it's two meanings to understand the joke. All right. That's it.
