English Vocabulary: Fun vs Funny

Hey, hey. My name is Molly.

And in this video, we will be talking  about the difference between fun and funny.

Now, my students are always  getting these two words confused.

And today, we are going to fix that problem. Let's look at the board.

Our first word is ‘fun’. Now, ‘fun’ can be used as an adjective or a noun. 

nostra prima parola è "divertimento". Ora, "divertimento" può essere usato come aggettivo o sostantivo.

It means you enjoy yourself  and you have a good time. 

Significa che ti diverti e ti diverti.

Maybe you go to the pool friends on a nice day. 

Forse vai in piscina con gli amici in una bella giornata.

You had a good time. You had fun. 

Ti sei divertito. Ti sei divertito.

Let's look at our second word, ‘funny’. ‘funny’ has two meanings. 

Diamo un'occhiata alla nostra seconda parola, "divertente". "divertente" ha due significati.

And it can be used as an adjective. The first meaning is, it makes you laugh. 

E può essere usato come aggettivo. Il primo significato è, ti fa ridere.

Hahaha Okay. Your friend tells  

Ahahah Va bene. Il tuo amico racconta

a funny joke and the joke is funny. Okay. Our second, less common,  

una barzelletta divertente e la barzelletta è divertente. Va bene. Il nostro secondo significato, meno comune,

meaning is it's strange. Something is a little strange.

So let's keep practicing  and look at some examples.

Now, I'm going to tell you about  a party I went to last weekend. 

Ora ti parlerò di una festa a cui sono andato lo scorso fine settimana.

The party was fun. I had a good time. 

La festa era divertente. Mi sono divertito.

I had a lot of fun. Now, the first ‘fun’ is used as an adjective. 

Mi sono divertito molto. Ora, il primo "divertimento" è usato come aggettivo.

And in the second sentence, it's used as a noun. They both mean the same thing. 

E nella seconda frase, è usato come sostantivo. Entrambi significano la stessa cosa.

That I had a good time. Next, ‘funny’ has a different meaning. 

Che mi sono divertito. Successivamente, "divertente" ha un significato diverso.

John was funny. John told a joke and I laughed, “hahaha.” 

Giovanni era divertente. John ha raccontato una barzelletta e io ho riso, "hahaha".

He is a funny guy. Next, “He smelled funny.” 

È un ragazzo divertente. Successivamente, "Aveva un odore strano".

Now, remember there's two meanings to ‘funny’. Laughing like “ha ha ha”.

And funny like strange. “He smelled funny.” 

E divertente come strano. "Aveva un odore strano."

He smelled a little strange. So let's keep practicing with some more examples.

A comedian is someone who  makes you laugh “ha ha ha”.

He's telling some good jokes. He is funny. 

Sta raccontando delle belle barzellette. Lui è divertente.

Have a good time at the beach. I want you to have a good time. 

Divertiti in spiaggia. Voglio che tu ti diverta.

Have fun at the beach. His hat looks fun or funny? 

Divertiti in spiaggia. Il suo cappello sembra divertente o divertente?

His hat looks funny. Now, funny can have two meanings. 

Il suo cappello sembra divertente. Ora, divertente può avere due significati.

Funny like laughing “ha ha  ha” or funny like strange. 

Divertente come ridere "ah ah ah" o divertente come strano.
