Today is Day 11 and we’re studying phrasal verbs with “die”.

Are you dying to know what today’s phrasal verb is?

It’s die.

First, die away.

Для начала [DIE] [AWAY]

This means to fade away, to fade to nothing.

Значит угасать, постепенно исчезать.

We use it a lot with sounds.

Мы часто говорим так о звуке.

The sound of the train died away as it left town.

— Звук уходящего поезда [DIED] [AWAY].

Or, the laughter of the crowd died away as they realized how serious the situation was.

— Смех толпы [DIED] [AWAY], когда люди поняли, как всё серьёзно.

It can also mean to become weaker.

Ещё значение — ослабевать.

The excitement of Christmas died away as the kids got older.

— Волнение от Рождества [DIED] [AWAY], пока дети взрослели.

The new paint smell should die away over time.

— Со временем запах краски [DIE] [AWAY].

Die back is used with plants.

О растениях говорят [DIE] [BACK].

Our yard dies back in the winter.

— Зимой наш двор [DIES] [BACK].

This means, the plants don’t die, but they loose leaves. They loose color.

С деревьев облетает листва. Растения блёкнут.

But they will come back in the spring.

Но весной они снова расцветут.

Die down has a meaning must like to die away:

[DIE] [DOWN] очень похоже на [DIE] [AWAY].

to fade or lose strength or intensity:

Ослабевать и тускнуть.

Put another log on the fire, it’s dying down.

— Подкинь дровишек в костёр, иначе он [DYING] [DOWN].

When the rain dies down, let’s to for a walk.

— Пойдём гулять, как только дождь [DIES] [DOWN].

To die for: this means to want something a lot,

Мы [DIE] [FOR], когда очень хотим чего-нибудь.

or for something to be amazing.

Или восхищаемся чем-нибудь.

I’d die for a chance to go to the big game.

— Я готова [DIE] [FOR] билет на эту игру.

This chocolate cake is to die for.

— Этот шоколадный торт достоин [to DIE] [FOR].

I’m dying to go to Europe.

— Я готова [DIE] [FOR] поездку в Европу.

To die out is to be extinct, for every one of a species or family to be gone.

Виды животных и растений [DIE] [OUT], когда все их представители умирают.

The dinosaurs died out millions of years ago.

— Динозавры [DIED] [OUT] миллионы лет назад.

We have to prevent rare species from dying out.

— Мы обязаны спасти редкие виды от [DYING] [OUT].

Old family traditions have died out with the younger generations.

— У молодых поколений семейные традиции [DIED] [OUT].

Die away, die back, die down, die for, die out.

Die away — die back — die down — die for — die out

‘Die’ is a simple word. It has the D consonant and the AI diphthong. Die.

[DIE] — простое слово. В начале согласный [d], за ним двугласный [aɪ].

To make the D consonant, the tongue comes to the roof of the mouth

Для звука [d] кончик языка вверх к нёбу.

and the vocal cords engage a bit to make this sound, ddd.

Работают языковые связки. [d] — [d] — [d]

We make that as we release the tongue, d-, d-.

Отпускаем язык — получаем звук. [d] — [d] — [d]

Then right into the AI as in BUY diphthong, die.

И сразу переводим на [aɪ], как в слове [BUY]. — [daɪ]

Jaw drops, back of the tongue lifts, da-ah...

Челюсть вниз. Корень языка вверх. [da] —[daɪ]

Die. Then the front of the tongue arches towards the front of the roof of the mouth

Затем спинку языка тянем к нёбу.

while the tip of the tongue stays down behind the bottom front teeth.

If the next word begins with a vowel or diphthong,

you can think of putting a quick Y sound between the two words

можно втиснуть И-краткий между словами

to glide between the sounds and connect them.
