This is Day 8 and we're studying "hit" phrasal verbs.

Hit back. If you hit back at someone, you’re responding to an attack with an attack.

After the paper ran a false story on her, she hit back with a lawsuit.

If you hit somebody up, you’re asking them for something.

“Hey, can I hit you up for a dollar?”

That is, if you ever need anything, just ask.

What if you hit it off with someone?

That means you get along really well right from the beginning.

Luckily, I hit it off with my mother-in-law.

If you hit on someone, well, that means you’re sexually interested in someone and want them to know it.

Se você deu em cima de alguém, bem, isso significa que você está sexualmente interessado em alguém e quer que eles saibam disso.

I’m not sure, but I think that guy at the bar is hitting on me.

Não tenho certeza, mas acho que aquele cara no bar está dando em cima de mim.

It means, you don’t think he was just talking to you for the sake of conversation.

Isso significa que você não acha que ele estava falando com você apenas para conversar.

You think he was talking to you to let you know he was interested.

So that’s if you hit on someone. But what if you hit on something?

That is, to find something. I think you hit on the answer there.

I think I hit on a solution to the problem.

Hit has the H consonant and the IH vowel,

Hit tem a consoante H e a vogal IH,

Hi-, hi-. To make the IH vowel, the tongue tip stays down,

Hi-, hi-. Para fazer a vogal IH, a ponta da língua fica para baixo,

but the front part of the tongue arches up towards the front of the roof of the mouth,

The jaw can drop just a little bit. Hi-.

Then we have the T. you can make this a Stop T if the next word begins with a consonant, like in ‘hit back’.

If the next word begins with a vowel or a diphthong,

then you can make it a Flap T, like in ‘hit on’.
