This is likely different from what you learned in English class.

You see, in American English, we have all sorts of words that are unstressed or even reduced:

アメリカ英語には、弱く読んだり音を落としたり

that means we change the pronunciation.

発音を変化させて読む言葉がたさくんあります。

The set of the 100 most common words in American English

このシリーズでご紹介する 100個の頻出英単語には

contains many, many words that reduce.

そんな風に弱く読む単語がたくさん登場します。

Today, we start with number seventy-one, and that’s the word ‘than’.

今日はNo.71THANからです。

Fully pronounced, we have voiced TH, AA as in BAT, followed by the M consonant.

きちんと読むと TH、BATと同じAA、そして子音のMです。

Than.

THAN

Than.

THAN

When AA is followed by N, we relax the back of the tongue and change the sound: thaaa— thaa— than.

AAのあとにNがくる場合 舌の後ろ部分をだらーんとさせて

Than.

こんな風に発音します。

Aa-uh, aa-uh.

So it’s not aahh thaaan, thaaan, but ‘than’, aa-uh, aa-uh, aa-uh.

こうではなく、こうです。

There’s an extra sound in there from relaxing the back of the tongue, sort of like an UH vowel.

舌の後ろ部分の力を抜くことで

こんな音が加わります。

Thaaaa— Than.

Than.

Than.

But we don’t need to focus too much on the full pronunciation of this word

でもそんなに気にする必要はありません。

since it is a word that reduces.

リダクションになる単語だからです。

Remember, when a word reduces, that’s called a reduction,

覚えていますか？

and that’s when we change or drop a sound.

音が変化または脱落する現象を 「リダクション」と言います。

So rather than saying ‘than’ in a conversation, it will be ‘thn’.

こんな風にはっきり読むのではなく

母音はシュワ（あいまい母音）にして そのままNに吸収させます。

We change the vowel to the schwa, which is absorbed by the N,

so you don’t even need to think about making a vowel there.

ですから、母音はほとんど発音しないのです。

Than, than, than, from the TH to the N.

THのあとはすぐにNです。

Very fast.

素早く！

Than.

We use this with comparisons: she’s taller than I am, than, than, than I am.

この単語は何かを比較するときに使います。 She's taller than I am. （彼女は私よりも背が高い）

They’re older than we are.

They're older than we are. （彼らは私たちよりも年齢が上だ）

Than, than, older than.

Taller than, older than, than, than, than.

Taller than, older than, than, than, than.

A reduction, not a fully pronounced word.

きちんと読むのではなく音を減らして読みます。

If you go around fully pronouncing every word, it will not sound natural,

単語を全てきちんと発音したら 自然な英語には聞こえません。

so you need to know and use these reductions.

リダクションのルールを知って 実際に使えるようになることがとても大事です。

Number seventy-two, a very similar word, ‘then’.

No.72はTHENです。 先ほどのTHANに似ていますね。

THAN is used with comparisons, and THEN is used with timing,

THANは比較に、THANは「～の時」

sequences, and if/then statements.

「～のあと」、「もし～だったら～」 というときに使います。

It got really dark, then it stormed all night.

It got really dark, then it stormed all night. （ものすごく暗くなったかと思ったら、 それから一晩嵐だった）

Or: if we go grocery shopping, then we can cook dinner.

If we go grocery shopping, then we can cook dinner. (食料品の買い出しに行けば夕飯が作れる)

You won’t always hear it reduced, but often you will.

必ずではないのですが かなりの確率でリダクションになります。

I reduced it in both of those sentences.

私なら今の例文はどちらもリダクションにしますね。

Fully pronounced, it has the EH vowel.

きちんと発音すればEHという母音が入ります。

Theh— THEN.

But reduced, we change it to the schwa.

リダクションのときはシュワです。

Then it sounds just like ‘than’ when we reduce it.

THANと同じような音になってしまうのです。

Then, then.

It was really dark, and then it stormed all night.

It got really dark, then it stormed all night. （ものすごく暗くなったかと思ったら、 それから一晩嵐だった）

Then, then, then.

And then it, and then it, and then it.

And then it, and then it, and then it.

And then it stormed.

And then it stormed.

Those three unstressed words together are not very clear:

これら全てあいまいに読みます。

and then it.

and then it.

And then it.

And then it.

and then it.

and then it.

‘And’ reduces, ‘then’ reduces, ‘it’ is said quickly with a Stop T.

ANDとTHENがリダクションで、 ITはものすごく速く読んでTで止めます。

Some people might think, that’s very unclear, that’s not good English,

「そんなに適当に読んでいいの！？」 と思う人もいるでしょう。

but I want to stress that it is.

でもこれこそが正しい英語なのです。

Good English is made up of a contrast

強弱のコントラストがあるのが良い英語です。

between stressed words and unstressed words.

You have to have the unstressed words for this contrast.

弱く読む単語が必要なのです！

Do you hear that ‘can’ reduction?

No.53でやったCANのリダクションに気づきましたか？

That was number 53.

It’s interesting that our first two in this video,

この動画の最初の二つの単語が

two different words, sound exactly the same when they reduce.

リダクションになると全く同じ音になってしまうとは

THAN and THEN both become ‘thn’.

面白いですね。

That’s okay.

This is true of a few other reductions as well.

他にもそんな風に同じ発音になる単語はありますが、

Because of the context of the sentence, there isn’t confusion.

文脈でどちらかわかりますので問題はありません。

Number 73, the word ‘now’.

No.73はNOWです。

This is one word that doesn’t reduce.

この単語はリダクションにはなりません。

It’s an adverb, and adverbs are one of four kinds of content words:

これは副詞なので内容語になります。

adverbs, verbs, nouns, and adjectives.

副詞、動詞、名詞、形容詞は内容語です。

We generally don’t reduce content words, or make them sound unstressed.

リダクションにしたり弱く読むことは 基本的にはありません。

Generally, these are stressed in a sentence.

文章の中ではたいていの場合、強調して読みます。

This is what provides that contrast that I was talking about

これが先ほどお話した 強弱のコントラストを生むのです。

being so important in American English.

アメリカ英語にはコントラストが欠かせません。

Stressed and unstressed or reduced.

強調する、しない、そして音の脱落。

Long and short.

長い、短い。

NOW has the N consonant and the OW diphthong.

NOWは子音のNと二重母音のOWからなっています。

For the diphthong, we start by dropping the jaw,

then let the jaw come up as you round the lips, ow, now.

唇をすぼめながら上げて発音します。

Now.

For the N, keep the tongue nice and wide as it lifts for the sound, nnn, now.

Number 74, the word ‘look’.

No.74はLOOKです。

What part of speech is the word ‘look’?

LOOKの品詞はなんでしょうか？

It’s a verb most of the time.

ほとんどの場合は動詞です。

Look at me!

Look at me! （私を見て！）

It can also be a noun: She gave me a look.

でも名詞のときもあります。 She gave me a look. （彼女は私をちらっと見た）

Noun, verb, these are both content words.

名詞と動詞はどちらも内容語です。

Stressed words.

強調して読みます。

And yes, this word will be stressed in a sentence.

文章の中では必ず強調して読むのです。

There are six different pronunciations possible for the letters O-O.

OOの発音には6種類あるのですが、

In this word, the pronunciation of OO is ‘uh’ like in ‘push’.

この単語ではOOの発音はPUSHと同じ発音です。

Uh, uh, luh, look, look.

It’s not ‘Luke’, oo, oo, where your lips round more.

唇をすぼめすぎてLUKEにならないように。

Luke.

The lips are more relaxed: uh, look, look.

唇の力を抜いてください。

Number 75: the word ‘only’.

No.75はONLYです。

This is another content word.

これは内容語です。

At the beginning of this 100 word series, most of the words we were covering were reductions.

この動画シリーズの前半では ほとんどの単語がリダクションになりました。

Now we’re getting down the list, we’re getting a lot more content words.

リストも後半に突入し、内容語が増えてきましたね。

I can tell you one mistake that I hear all the time with the pronunciation of this word.

この単語の発音でよく耳にする 誤った発音があります。

Instead of ‘only’, people will say ‘only’.

正しくはこうなのですが、

こんな風に読んでしまう人がいるのです。

Uh, uh, uh, uh.

The vowel is more like the AH as in Father or the AW as in Law.

FATHERのAやLAWのAと同じ発音はダメです。

But the correct pronunciation is a diphthong.

これは二重母音なので

That means we change the mouth position.

口の形を変えなければいけません。

Ohh.

Jaw drop then lip rounding.

下あごを下げて唇をすぼめます。

Oh, oh Only.

So make sure your mouth isn't staying stationary.

口が同じ形で止まったままにならないように。

Oh, oh, only.

Only, oh, oh.

There has to be that movement, jaw drop, then lip rounding.

必ず口を動かしてくださいね。 下あごを下げて口をすぼめてください。

Right after the Oh diphthong, a flat, wide tongue goes to the roof of the mouth for the N,

二重母音のあとは舌を平らに広げて 上あごに向けて持ち上げて

only, then light L, IH vowel, unstressed, only.

ライトLを出し、最後はYを軽く発音します。

Another possible mistake here is to make the unstressed syllable too relaxed.

もう一つよくある間違いはこれです。

最後のYが脱力しすぎているというものです。

Then it sounds like: only, ih, ih, ee, ee.

Yの音はこのように発音しましょう。

It should be ee.

The tip of the tongue is down but the front part is arched

舌の先端は下を向いていますが、 舌の前半部分はアーチを描くように

reaching towards the roof of the mouth.

上あごに沿わせます。

Ee.

If it's too far away from the roof of the mouth, then it sounds like IH instead of EE.

舌が上あごから離れていると ゆるい音になります。

正しくは、こうです。

Only.

Only.

You're the only one.

You're the only one. （あなただけよ）

If only it were true.

If only it were true. （本当だったらいいのに）

Number 76 the word ‘come’.

No.76はCOMEです。

This is a verb.

これは動詞なので内容語になります。

So yes, it's a Content word.

And generally, we don't reduce this or make it unstressed in a sentence.

一般的にはリダクションや弱形にはしません。

It's one of the stressed words.

はい、強調するタイプの単語になります。

Oh, Come on.

Oh, come on. （何言ってるの）

Why don't you come over for dinner?

Why don't you come over for dinner? （うちに夕飯食べに来ない？）

It's the K consonant, the UH as in butter vowel, and the M consonant.

子音のKにButterのUH、そして子音のM

Come.

Come by, later. 「あとで寄って」

Come by later.

Cuh, cuh, ahh

この母音は力を入れずだらーんと発音しましょう。

This vowel is very relaxed.

If there's any tension in the back of your tongue, it will sound different.

舌の後ろ部分に少しでも力が入っていると 違う音になってしまいます。

Cuh, uh, come.

Keep it relaxed.

力を入れないでくださいね。

Come on over.

Come on over. （さあ、こっちへ来て）

Number 77.

No.77はITSです。

It's.

Not with an apostrophe.

アポストロフィーなしの方です。

That's the contraction ‘it is’.

IT ISの縮約形ではなく

This word is showing possession.

「～の」という所有格のITSです。

It's pronounced just like IT apostrophe S but it has a different meaning

発音は同じなのですが、

and is grammatically different.

意味も文法的な側面も違います。

Where's the remote?

Where's the remote? （リモコンはどこ？）

It's in its usual place.

It's in its usual place. （いつもの場所よ）

Here, I used IT apostrophe S as a Contraction, it is,

最初のIT'Sはアポストロフィーありの方です。

あとのアポストロフィーなしの方は 「その」という所有格です。

and then also without the apostrophe showing possession, the usual place of the remote.

It's not unusual for Americans to drop the vowel and just make this the TS cluster.

アメリカ人は「I」は読まずに TSだけを発音する人も少なくありません。

It's gone.

It's gone. （なくなっちゃった）

It's gone.

There I'm using the contraction ‘it is’.

It'sはこんな音になります。

Ts. Ts.

It's gone.

所有格のITSでも、頻度は少し下がるかもしれませんが 同じような現象が起きます。

This can also happen with the possessive ‘its’ though it might be a little less common.

Let's look at an example.

例を見ていきましょう。

Where's the remote?

Where's the remote? （リモコンどこ？）

Its usual place.

Its usual place. （いつものとこよ）

Its usual place.

There I'm just making the TS sounds.

ITSはTSだけで発音しています。

But usually, this word is not at the beginning of a sentence,

この単語は基本的には文頭には来ないので

then I would pronounce the vowel.

その場合は母音も発音します。

Its, its, its, its.

The watch is in its case.

The watch is in its case. （時計は所定の箱に入っている）

Its. Its. Its.

Said quickly.

素早く。

So even though I'm not dropping the vowel, It's still unstressed.

母音は完全に落としているわけではないのですが、

I'm saying it very quickly.

弱く、速く読みます。

This is not a stressed word.

強調はしない単語です。

Number 78, the word ‘over’.

No.78はOVERです。

This is usually a preposition.

これは基本的には前置詞です。

That's not a Content word.

前置詞は内容語ではないので

So usually this word won't be stressed.

たいていの場合、強調しません。

It will be unstressed.

弱く読みます。

But no sounds reduce.

ただ、リダクションにはなりません。

We don't change or drop anything.

音が変化したり脱落することはありません。

Just like ‘only’

ONLYと同じように

we start with the OH diphthong, jaw drop, then lip rounding.

二重母音のOHから始めて、 下あごを下げて、唇をすぼめます。

Oh. Oh.

Over.

A quick v schwa R, ver, ver, ver, ver.

素早くVを発音、シュワ、そしてR

Unstressed.

弱く読みます。

The schwa is absorbed by the R so you don't need to try to make a vowel in that second syllable.

シュワはRに吸収されますので ほとんど発音しなくて大丈夫です。

Just make a quick, low simple R sound.

低い音で素早くRの音を出せばOKです。

Ov— rrrrr— Over.

Over.

Vの発音は下の唇を上の歯に触れさせながら やわらかく振るわせます。

For the V sound at the bottom of the lip comes up to gently vibrate on the bottom of the top front teeth.

We jumped over the creek.

‘Jumped’ and ‘Creek’ are stressed.

強調するのはJumpとCreekです。

The rest of the words, including ‘over’ are unstressed.

OVERを含むほかの単語は弱く。

We traveled all over Italy.

We traveled all over Italy. （私たちはイタリアじゅうを旅した）

Over.

Overは軽く、Allよりも弱く読みます。

Over. Unstressed, less clear than ‘all’.

All over—

平たく、あいまいに。

Flatter in pitch, less clear.

Number 79, the word ‘think’.

No.79はTHINKです。

A verb, a Content word, a word that is usually stressed.

動詞で内容語なので基本は強調します。

Fully pronounced.

きちんと読みます。

This word is tricky to pronounce.

この単語は発音が少し難しいです。

It's got that unvoiced TH at the beginning.

THが入ってますからね。

The only way to make the sound is to bring the tongue tip through the teeth.

この発音をするには舌の先端を 上下の歯の間から少し出さなければなりません。

The air should flow, there should not be a stop. Th, th, th.

息はス、ス、ス、と止めずに。 スッと流れるように出しましょう。

But rather, thhh.

Flowing air.

空気の流れを意識してください。

Two common mistakes would be to make an S instead.

よくある間違い。 一つ目はTHではなくSになってしまうというもの。

Sink.

Or a tea instead: tink.

Try to avoid these substitutions and get comfortable with the TH sound. Th—th—

Now an IPA, this would be written phonetically with the IH vowel.

次の母音ですが、IPA発音記号では IHと書かれます。

Ih— But when IH it is followed by NG, it changes.

It becomes more like: ee-ih-ee.

こういった音になります。

THINとTHINKを比べてみましょう。

Let's compare this with the word ‘thin’.

The first two sounds are the same.

最初の二つの音は同じです。

TH, IH vowel.

In ‘thin’, it's followed by the N sound.

でもTHINはNが続き、

THINKはNGの音が続きます。

And in ‘think’, it's followed by the NG sound, which as I said, Changes the vowel.

先ほどお伝えしましたように 母音の発音が変化します。

So let's start with ‘thin’.

THINの発音はこうです。

Thin, ih, ih, ih.

Thin.

And now, ‘think’: thing, thi, thing, thing, thinnggg, thin.

THINKはこう。

違いがわかりますか？

Ee, ih, ee, ih.

Do you hear how the vowel sound is different?

Thiiiink. Think. Think.

So even though it says IH, it’s a lot more like EE in real life.

発音記号は同じですが THINKではこういった音になります。

You may say why is this letter N the NG sound?

なんでこれがNGなの？と 思っている人もいるかもしれません。

There's no letter G.

Gはどこ？と

That's true.

確かにそうですね。

When the letter n is followed by the letter K,

NのあとにKが続くときは

Then the pronunciation of n is usually the NG sound: nggg---

Nの音はNGになることが多いのです。

where the back of the tongue touches the soft palate.

舌の後ろの方が軟口蓋に触れて

This is also where the K sound is made.

Kの音もここで出しますが

Nnggkkk, nnggkkk.

このような音が出るのです。

Think.

Think.

Other examples. Sink. Siiinnggkkk.

ほかの例も見てみましょう。

Bank. Bannngggkkk.

So both of these words, the N represents the NG sound.

これらの単語はどちらもNがNGの音になっています。

Number 80, the last word for this video, the word ‘also’.

No.80はALSOです。

This is an adverb and generally it's stress in a sentence.

これは副詞なので一般的には強調します。

I also want to get coffee. （私もコーヒー飲みたいな）

I also want to get coffee.

Or, that was also a problem.

That was also a problem. （あれも問題だったわよね）

I want to make sure you know not to fully pronounce that L.

Lはきちんと発音しないでくださいね。

It's a dark L because it comes after the vowel in the syllable.

母音のあとのLはダークLといいます。

Don't lift your tongue tip for this L.

舌をあまり上げずに

Make a dark sound with the back of your tongue.

Ohhlll, ohhll, ohhlll.

舌の後ろの方を使ってこもった音を出しましょう。

Lifting the tongue tip it brings a sound forward and tends to mess people up.

舌を上げると音が前に出てきます。

It's a dark sound.

これはこもった音ですので

Ohhlll, ohhll.

舌の後ろ部分しか使いません。

Back of the tongue doing the work, tongue tip can stay down.

舌の先端は上げる必要がありません。

This word ends with an OH diphthong. It's an unstressed syllable.

最後は二重母音のOHです。 こちらは強調しない音節ですので

So there won't be as much jaw drop or lip rounding.

あごを下げたり唇をすぼめたりは そこまで必要ありません。

Still make sure your lips around a little bit to give us that feel.

ほんの少しだけすぼめるくらいで大丈夫です。

As we get to the end of the 100 most common words in American English,

we're finding more that are fully pronounced.

In this video, we had four words that are unstressed or reduced,

and six that generally are stressed.

一般的に強調する単語は6個でした。

Before this video, we had only eleven words of the first 69 that were always reliably stressed.

今までの動画では69個のうち きちんと読む単語はたったの11個でした。

Most of the words in the most common words in American English list are unstressed or reduced.

英語に最もよく登場する単語100個のほとんどは 強調しないかリダクションになるということです。

We have 20 words left.
