Practice Speaking English: How to give short answers about yourself

Do you feel stressed out when people start asking you questions about you in English?

Well, sometimes it's because suddenly the attention is on you and you have to respond.

حسنا، أحيانا يكون بسبب الأنتباه المفاجئ المتوجه إليك ، كما عليك أن تجيب

So, my name is Rebecca, and in this lesson I'll show you how to solve that problem very easily.

حسنا، إسمي Rebecca، وفي هذا الدرس سأوضح لك كيفية حل هذا المشكل بسهولة

Now, of course, there are all kinds of questions in English, but in this lesson we'll focus

الآن، بالطبع في الإنجليزية هناك كل أنواع الأسئلة، لكن في هذا الدرس سوف نركز

on questions with the verb "to be" in the past, present, and future.

على أسئلة الفعل "to be" في الماضي، الحاضر والمستقبل

Why only the verb "to be"?

لماذا فقط الفعل "to be"؟

Because the verb "to be" is a very common verb in English, and lots of questions are

لأن الفعل "to be" فعل شائع الأستعمال في اللغة الإنجليزية، وكثير من الأسئلة

asked to you using this verb.

تتطلب منك استعمال هذا الفعل

Now, because people ask you a lot of questions, in this lesson I'm only going to focus on

الآن، والأن الناس يطرحون عليك الكثير من الأسئلة، فسأركز في هذا الدرس على

questions that people ask you, so you know exactly how to answer.

الأسئلة التي يطرحها الناس عليك، حسنا أنت تعلم كيف تجيب تحديدا

These are not how to answer questions about him, or her, or us, or them.

هذه ليست كيفية الإجابة عن الأسئلة عنه، أو عنها، أو عنا أو عنهم

So by the end of this lesson you will know how to answer these questions, and feel much

Let's get started.

So, first of all, the thing to remember that in English when somebody asks you a question,

حسنا، قبل كل شيء ، الشيء الذي نتذكره في اللغة الإنجليزية أن شخصا ما حين يسألك سؤالا

especially when it's a yes or no question, you don't usually just say: "Yes." or: "No."

خاصة عنذما يكون جواب السؤال "نعم" أو "لا " ، فأنت عادة لا تجيب بـ "نعم" أو "لا" فقط

because it sounds a little too short, and could be a little rude, could sound nervous,

لأنه يبدو قصيرة جدا نوعا ما ، ويمكن أن يكون وقحا بعض الشيء ، قد يبدو متوتر

could sound angry.

وقد يبدو عصبيا

So usually we say a little bit more.

حسنا فعادة ما نجيب بزيادة قليلا

Why?

لماذا؟

Just because then it sounds a little bit more like a sentence.

فقط ليبدو بعدها كجملة

And these...

و هذا

This little bit more are...

هذا أكثر قليلا ...

This is called short answers.

وهذا ما يسمى بالإجابات القصيرة

Okay?

حسنا؟

That's what we'll learn now.

هذا ما سنتعلمه الآن

So, for example, the question will start something like this: "Are you something?" and we're

حسنا مثلا سيبدا السؤال بشيء كهذا: " هل أنت شيء؟"

going to practice many times so you get it, and your answers...

سوف نتدرب مرات عدة لتتمكن منها وإجابتك

The options are: "Yes, I am." or: "No, I'm not."

الخيار: "نعم أنا كذلك" أو " لا أنا لست كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

This and this, these are called short answers with the verb "to be".

هذه وهذه يدعيان بالأجوبة القصيرة للفعل "to be"

"Yes, I am.", "No, I'm not."

: "نعم أنا كذلك" " لا أنا لست كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

This is, of course, contracted a little bit, but don't analyze it.

هذه طبعا مركزا قليلا، لكن لا تحللها

Okay?

حسنا؟

Just repeat it after me so that it comes out of your mouth very easily.

فقط رددها بعدي لتخرج من فمك بسهولة جدا

So, now I'm going to ask you some questions about you, and wherever you are, I want you to answer.

حسنا، الآن سأسألك بعض الأسئلة عنك، وفي كل حالة أريدك أن تجيب

If you're in a library, say it quietly.

إذا كنت في المكتبة فأجب بهدوء

Okay?

حسنا؟

Or say it in your mind, but better if you can actually pronounce it and say it.

أو قلها في عقلك، لكن إذا استطعت ان تنطقها وتقولها فهذا أحسن

So I'm asking you: Are you married?

حسنا، أنا أسألك: هل أنت متزوج؟

You could say: "Yes, I am." or: "No, I'm not."

عليك أن تقول : "نعم، انا كذلك"أو "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

So say it.

حسنا، قلها

Really, tell the truth about you.

حقا، قل الحقيقة عنك

Okay?

حسنا

Next: Are you American?

بعدها: هل أنت أمريكي؟

So you probably said: "Yes, I am." or: "No, I'm not."

من المحتمل أنك قلت: "نعم، انا كذلك"أو "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Are you having dinner right now?

هل أنت تتعشى حاليا؟

"Yes, I am.", "No, I'm not."

"نعم، انا كذلك" "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Okay.

حسنا

Are you a student?

هل أنت طالب؟

"Yes, I am.", "No, I'm not."

"نعم، انا كذلك"أو "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Are you at the library?

هل أنت في المكتبة؟

What did you say?

ماذا قلت؟

"Yes, I am."

"نعم، أنا كذلك"

And some of you said: "No, I'm not."

وبعضكم قال: "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

In case you realized, these are general questions, these are a little bit academic, and now we

في هذه الحالت قد أدركت أن هذه الأسئلة عامة، وهذه أكاديمية نوعا ما والآن

come to the more professional questions somebody might ask you at work.

سنأتي إلى الأسئلة الإحترافية، قد يسألك شخص في العمل

Are you a manager?

هل أنت مدير؟

And you could say: "Yes, I am." or: "No, I'm not."

وعليك قول: نعم أنا كذلك" أو "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

And last: Are you attending any meetings this week?

وفي الأخير: هل تحضر أي لقاء في هذا الأسبوع؟

Even if you're not, just pretend.

حتى لو لم تكن كذلك ، فقط ادعي.

Give me an answer.

اعطيني جواب

"Yes, I am.", "No, I'm not."

نعم أنا كذلك" "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

So, in the present tense these are the only two options you have, these are the only two

في زمن الحاضر لديك خيارين فقط، هناك فقط شيئين

things you have to learn: "Yes, I am.", "No, I'm not."

عليك تعلمهما: "نعم، أنا كذلك" "لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Next we'll look at how to answer these questions in the past.

بعدها سنرى كيفية الإجابة على هذه الإسئلة في زمن الماضي

So, in the past our question will be: "Were you something?"

حسنا، في زمن الماضي يكون أسؤالنا هو: "هل كنت شيء؟"

Okay?

And the answer will be: "Yes, I was." or: "No, I wasn't."

حسنا؟

والجواب سيكون: " نعم، كنت كذلك" أو "لا، لم أكن كذلك"

Say it after me: "Yes, I was.", "No, I wasn't."

ردد بعدي: " نعم، كنت كذلك" " لا، لم أكن كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

So, let's look at some imaginary questions.

حسنا، دعونا نرى بعض الأسئلة الإفتراضية

These are general, these are to do with the academic world, and this has to do with work

هذه عامة، هذه للعالم الأكاديمي، وهذه للعمل

or at your job. Okay?

أو في مهنتك، حسنا؟

So: Were you busy yesterday?

حسنا، هل كنت مشغولا أمس؟

So you could say: "Yes, I was." or: "No, I wasn't."

حسنا، عيك القول: "نعم كنت كذلك" أو "لا، لم أكن كذلك"

Were you in London last year?

هل كنت في لندن فس السنة الأخيرة؟

You could say: "Yes, I was."

عليك القول: "نعم، كنت كذلك"

Maybe you were.

ربما كنت

Or: "No, I wasn't."

أو "لا، لم أكن"

Okay, next: Were you ready for your last English test?

حسنا، بعدها: هل كنت مستعدا للامتحان الأخير في اللغة الإنجليزية؟

I hope you're saying: "Yes, I was because I watched engVid."

آمل أنك تقول: نعم، كنت كذلك لأنني شاهدة "إنقفيد"

Or: "No, I wasn't. I have to watch more engVid."

أو "لا، لم أكن كذلك. عليا مشاهدة "إنقفيد" أكثر"

Okay.

حسنا

Or: Were you doing your homework when I called?

أو: هل كنت تقوم بواجبك حين اتصلت بك؟

Okay?

حسنا؟

"Yes, I was." or: "No, I wasn't."

" نعم، كنت كذلك" أو "لا، لم أكن كذلك"

All right.

صحيح؟

Now: Were you on the phone?

الآن: هل كنت على الهاتف؟

"Yes, I was." or: "No, I wasn't."

"نعم، كنت كذلك" أو "لا لم أكن كذلك"

And last: Were you at the conference last week?

و أخيرا: هل كنت في المؤتمر في الأسبوع الأخير؟

And you're saying either: "Yes, I was." or: "No, I wasn't."

فإما أن تقول: "نعم كنت كذلك" أو "لا، لم أكن كذلك"

Okay?

حسنا؟

So you see how it's building, right?

حسنا، لقد رأيت كيف تبنى، صحيح،

How it changes, of course it changes because first we talked about the present tense.

وكيف تغيرت، طبعا لقد تغيرت لأن في البداية كنا نتحدث عن الزمن الحاضر

-"Are you?"

"هل أنت؟"

-"Yes, I am."/"No, I'm not."

"نعم، أنا كذلك"/"لا، أنا لست كذلك"

Then we talked about the past tense: "Were you?"

ثم تحدثنا عن الزمن الماضي: "هل كنت؟"

so your answer changes: "Yes, I was."/"No, I wasn't."

حسنا إجابتك تغيرت: "نعم، كنت كذلك"/ "لا، لم أكن كذلك"

And last we're going to talk about the future tense.

وفي الأخير سنتحدث عن الزمن المستقبل

So, in the future our question is: "Will you be something?"

حسنا، في زمن المستقبل تكون أسئلتنا: "هل ستكون شيء؟"

Okay?

حسنا؟

And the answer is: "Yes, I will."

وإجابتك: " نعم، سأكون"

or: "No, I won't."

أو "لا، لن أكون"

Again, don't analyze it.

مرة أخرى، لا تحللها

Just accept and remember that the positive answer is: "Yes, I will.", negative answer:

فقط تقبلها وتذكرها، الإجابة الإيجابية : "نعم سأكون" الإجابة السلبية:

"No, I won't."

"لا لن أكون"

All right?

صحيح؟

Now let me ask you some questions;

الآن دعني أسألكم بعض الأسئلة

some general ones, some academic ones, and some professional ones.

بعضها عامة، بعضها أكادمي، وبعضها إحترافي

So: Will you be at home tomorrow?

حسنا: هل ستكون في المنزل غدا؟

What did you say?

ماذا قلت؟

"Yes, I will."?

"نعم، سأكون؟"

Okay.

Or:

حسنا؟

أو

"No, I won't."

" لا لن أكون"

Remember you have to say the whole thing.

تذكر يجب عليك قول كل شيء

Don't leave out the ending.

لا تتخلى عن النهاية

I want to hear: "won't".

أريد سماع " لن أكون"

Okay?

Next: Will you be going to the party on Saturday?

حسنا؟

تم: " هل ستذهب إلى الحفلة يوم السبت؟"

So maybe you said, let's pretend there's a party on Saturday:

حسنا ربما قلت، دعنا نتظاهر بوجود حفلة يوم السبت

"Yes, I will."

"نعم، سأذهب"

or: "No, I won't."

أو "لا لن أذهب"

Good.

جيد

Will you be in the coffee shop?

هل ستكون في المقهى؟

"Yes, I will.", "No, I won't."

"نعم، سأكون" "لا لن أكون"

Will you be studying for the exam tonight?

هل ستدرس للإمتحان هذه الليلة؟

"Yes, I will."

" نعم، سأفعل"

or: "No, I won't."

أو " لا لن أفعل"

Will you be at work on Friday?

هل ستكون في العمل يوم الحمعة؟

"Yes, I will."

" نعم سأكون"

or: "No, I won't."

أو "لا لن أكون"

Will you be applying for the job?

هل ستتقدم بالطلب للحصول على مهنة؟

So maybe you can say: "Yes, I will."

حسنا ربما يمكنك القول: "نعم ، سأفعل"

or: "No, I won't."

أو "لا لن أفعل"

Now, what was the point of these short answers?

الآن، ماهو الهدف من هذه الإجابات القصيرة؟

The whole point of the short answers is that you don't have to repeat the whole question.

الهدف من الإجابات القصيرة هو عدم تكرارك للسؤال

Right?

صحيح؟

So, when we said: "Yes, I will" it means:

حسنا، عندما نقول: "نعم سأفعل" معناه

"Yes, I will be applying for the job",

" نعم ، سأتقدم بطلب للحصول على مهنة"

but we don't have to say the whole thing. Okay?

لكن لا يجب علينا قول كل ذلك، حسنا؟

So by giving these short answers, they're like shortcuts that make it much easier for

لإعطاء إجابات قصيرة هناك إختصارات تجعل الأمر سهل

you to answer.

So, are you feeling better now?

حسنا، هل تشعر الآن بشعور أحسن

Are you feeling more relaxed?

هل أنت أكثر هدوء

Are you feeling less nervous?

هل تشعر بتوتر أقل؟

I hope you're saying: "Yes, I am."

آمل أنك تقول : "نعم أنا كذلك"

Okay?
