Why do we use contractions in English?

Today we're looking at contractions

오늘 우리는 축약을

when is good to use them, and when is bad to

언제 사용하면 좋은지, 언제 사용하면 안 좋은지에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

to use them

Are you ready!? Because I'm!

준비 되셨나요!? 왜냐하면 난!

...I am...

...나는...

Because I'm... Because I'm...

왜냐하면 나는...

Why is it that the Terminator chose to say:

왜냐하면 나는... 터미네이터가

Instead of "I will be back"

"나는 돌아올 것이다" 대신에

Why did Bill Clinton NOT contract this sentence:

왜 빌 클린턴이 이 문장을 생략하지 않았는가:

and why did king Joffrey

그리고 왜 King Joffrey는

not use the contraction "I'm" and instead say:

축약형 "I'm"을 사용하지 않고 대신 다음과 같이 말했습니까?

So obviously it's better to use contractions in everyday speech

For example "I'm tired", "I'm eating"

"I'll do this"

That sounds normal

It would sound like a robot to say things like:

"I AM eating"

"I AM eat"

"I WILL be back"

"I WILL be back"과 같은 말을 하는 것은 로봇처럼 들릴 것입니다.

Why? Because it sounds more human to say

"I'll" - The contraction

But of course that's not always true

sometimes it's better NOT to contract, for example:

Well let's say someone asks you:

and you reply:

this is a very common mistake I see with

다음과 같습니다.

my students and remember not to do it

제 학생들과 만나서 하지 말 것을 기억하세요

"Yes I've" - That doesn't sound good

"예, 했습니다" - 좋지 않은 것 같네요 "예, 끝냈습니다"

You must have something after

뒤에 무언가가 있어야 합니다 -

"Yes I finished" - Fine

좋습니다 "

"Yes I've" - Not fine

예, 했습니다" - 좋지

If you don't have that extra information after

않습니다 없다면 그 추가 정보는

don't contract it

계약하지 않습니다.

"Yes I have" - That's okay

"예, 있습니다." - 괜찮고

and the same is true for other

다른 주어도 마찬가지입니다.

Subject - Auxillary / Modal verb combos

Don't contract them if there is no extra information afterwards

Another example:

Again we have just the subject

this time with a modal verb you should say:

이번에는 주어를 조동사로 말해야 합니다:

"Yes I would"

"Yes I would"가

Not "Yes I'd"

아니라 "Yes I'd"

Why?

Because there's no extra information

왜?

추가 정보가 없기 때문에

If you contract it

약정하는 경우

remember to put that extra information

추가 정보를 입력하는 것을 기억하세요

yes I'd love to

예 I'd love to

and negatives - Fine to contract

네거티브 - 약약하는 것이

In fact it's better, you should contract the negatives

좋습니다 사실 더 낫습니다. 거의 항상 네거티브 약어를 사용해야 합니다.

pretty much all the time

For example:

예:

That sounds a little strong

약간 강하게 들립니다.

and in some cases maybe aggressive

그리고 어떤 경우에는 공격적일 수도 있습니다.

no I haven't that looks better, more friendly,

아니 저는 그게 더 좋아 보이고, 더 친근하고,

more human, not so much robot!

더 인간적이고, 그다지 로봇이 아닌 것 같습니다!

So with negatives

그래서 네거티브의 경우 약어를 사용하는 것을

just remember to contract it

기억하세요.

Not using a contraction makes the sentence stronger

약어를 사용하지 않으면 문장이 더 강해집니다.

it adds emphasis and again could sound

그것은 강조를 더하고 다시

more aggressive so be careful

더 공격적으로 들릴 수 있으므로 조심하세요.

And this is why King Joffrey said:

그리고 이것이 King Joffrey가 말한 이유입니다.

He wanted to sound serious

and add emphasis

I do not miss Joffrey

See? Stronger!

? 더 강하게!

And it also sounds more formal when it's not contracted

또한 약자로 쓰지 않으면 더 격식 있게 들립니다.

That's why your English teacher will always say:

그래서 영어 선생님은 항상 이렇게 말합니다.

"In formal writing don't use contractions"

"격식 있는 글에서는 약자를 사용하지 마세요.

Because it sounds more formal when you don't contract

Also, some language experts suggest

That people don't use contractions when they speak

" 그들이 말할 때 축약을 사용하지 않을 때 그들이

When they want people to believe them

사람들이 그들을 믿기를 원할 때

To sound more convincing

더 설득력있게 들리도록

So basically when they're lying

그래서 기본적으로 그들이 거짓말을 할 때

Oh he really wanted everyone to believe him!

오 그는 정말 모두가 그를 믿기를 원했습니다!

So the next time your boyfriend or girlfriend says:

그래서 다음 번에 당신의 남자 친구나 여자 친구가

"I did NOT cheat on you"

"나는 당신을 속이지 않았습니다"라고 말한다면

That means they definitely cheated on you. Sorry.

그들은 확실히 당신을 속였다는 것을 의미합니다. 죄송합니다.
