How to sound posh - Part two

In Upper RP, the jaw barely moves, as expressed in these vowel sounds :

상류 RP는, 턱을 거의 움직이지 않고 모음을 발음합니다.

For example the vowel "o"

예를 들어, 모음 'O'의 경우

in normal RP would sound like /əʊ/

일반 RP는 "əʊ"로 발음하죠.

but in Upper RP, it's reduced to an almost /ɜ:/ sound

하지만 상류 RP에서는, 이것을 줄여 거의 'ɜ:'로 발음합니다.

For example : Go /gəʊ/ becomes go /gɜ:/

예를 들어, " Go(/gəʊ/)" 는 "Go/gɜ:/"

No /nəʊ/

No /nɜ:/

Show /ʃəʊ/

Show /ʃɜ:/

Don't /dəʊnt/

Don't /dɜ:nt/

If you're interested in the phonetics,

음성학에 관심이 있다면

This sound /əʊ/ becomes this sound /ɜ:/.. almost.

/əʊ/는 /ɜ:/가 됩니다. (거의 그렇습니다)

Other sounds which change are the /æ/ sound, to a slight /e/ sound :

/æ/ 는 약간 /e/ 로 바뀌죠

For example, Cat /kæt/

예를들어, Cat

Cat /ket/

Harry /hæri/

Harry /heri/

Carry /kæri/

Carry /keri/

If a word ends in an /i:/ sound, in Upper RP, it's reduced to a weaker /i/ sound.

단어가 i 소리로 끝난다면, 상류 RP에서는 더 약한 i 소리로 줄어듭니다

For example, Pretty /preti:/

예를 들어, Pretty

Pretty /preti/

Regular RP : Party /pɑ:ti:/

Party /pɑ:ti/

Really /rɪəli:/

Really /rɪəli/

Very /veri:/

Very /veri/

Which brings us to our next point : the R sound.

다음은 R 소리입니다

In words, when R separates two vowel sounds,

단어에서, R이 두 개의 모음 소리와 분리되어 있을 때

In normal RP, we would pronouce it.. normally.

일반 RP에서는 그냥... 평범하게 발음합니다

For example : Very /veri/. But in Upper RP : /veɾi/

예를 들어, Very. 하지만 상류 RP에서는, /veɾi/

This is what's called an alveolar tap.

이걸 '치경음'이라고 합니다

That's when the tongue very lightly taps the front roof of your mouth to create that R sound.

혀가 아주 살짝 입 앞의 천장에 닿아 R 소리를 만들죠

Again : Very /veri/

다시, Very

Very /veɾi/ (with alveolar tap)

Horror /hɒrə/

Horror /hɒɾə/ (with alveolar tap)

Mirror /mɪrə/

Mirror /mɪɾə/ (with alveolar tap)

In words with three vowel sounds together,

세 개의 모음이 함께 소리나는 단어는,

they're called triphtongs.

3중모음이라 합니다

In words like "power",

Power와 같은 단어에서는

/p/ + /aʊə/

The three vowel sounds are smoothed to an almost singular vowel sound :

3개의 모음 소리가 하나의 모음으로 부드럽게 연결되죠

in normal RP : Power /paʊə/

In upper RP : /pɑ:/

So, powerful /paʊəfʊl/

그러니 powerful

Powerful /pɑ:fʊl/

Shower /ʃaʊə/

Shower /ʃɑ:/

The triphtong /ɑɪə/

3중모음 /ɑɪə/

/ɑ/ + /ɪ/ + /ə/ like "Fire"

a + i + e, Fire 같은 단어는

sounds like this :

이렇게 소리납니다

Fire /fɑ:/

Hire /hɑɪə/

Hire /hɑ:/

Acquire /əkwɑɪə/

Acquire : /əkwɑ:/

Quiet /kwɑɪə/

Quiet : /kwɑ:t/

Empire : /empɑɪə/

Empire : /empɑ:/

Another triphtong : /eɪə/

다른 3중모음, /eɪə/

like /e/ + /ɪ/ + /ə/

그러니까 e + i + e는

such as in Layer /leɪə/

Layer와 같은 단어는

Layer : /leə/

Mayonnaise /meɪəneɪz/

Mayonnaise : /meəneɪz/

Player /pleɪə/

Player /pleə/

Also, in Upper RP, you'd be expected to include certain words into your vocabulary,

또 상류 RP에서는 당신이 사용하는 어휘에 특정한 단어를 포함해야 합니다

for example, these :

"Jolly",

Jolly

which essentially means "very"

본질적으로는 Very를 의미하는 단어죠

"Chap" which means "man",

남자를 의미하는 Chap

for example :

"Loo", a polite way of saying "toilet",

"Loo"는 변기를 예의있게 말하는 방법이죠

Use of the indefinite article "one" instead of the moderate "you", "he or "she",

적당한 you, he, she 대신 부정관사 one를 사용하는 건

is definitely advised in Upper RP,

명확하게 상류 RP임을 알리죠.

for example :

And finally, when meeting someone for the first time, one should extend a hand and a hearty "how do you do?"

마지막으로, 어떤 사람을 처음 만나서 "어떻게 지내?"라는 안부 인사를 건내야 할 때,
