I'll, You'll, ...Contractions of "Will" - Quick Pronunciation

On today's quick pronunciation video,

Dans la rapide leçon de prononciation d'aujourd'hui,

we're looking at the word "will" and how it contracts with all the pronouns,

on se penche sur le mot "will" et comment on peut le contracter avec tous les pronoms,

and other words that go with "will".

et d'autres mots qui vont avec "will".

Through this video, I'll give you examples

I want you to repeat with me so you can practice.

The good thing about "will" is it's a modal verb.

La bonne nouvelle avec "will", c'est que c'est un verbe modal.

And that means that "he", "she", "it",

Ça veut dire que avec "he", "she", "it",

doesn't conjugate any differently.

ça ne se conjugue pas différemment.

Everything is

Tout se conjugue

"blahblahblah will"

"blablabla will"

But today, we're talking about the pronunciation of the contractions of it.

Mais aujourd'hui, on parle de la prononciation des contractions du verbe.

Now, we all know that to contract the pronoun with "will",

On sait tous que pour contracter le pronom et "will",

we contract it to " 'll".

on contracte en " 'll".

Now, the pronunciation of that contraction can change,

La prononciation de cette contraction peut changer,

all depends on the style of speaking,

tout dépend du registre de langue,

the.. how fast you're speaking,

la vitesse à laquelle vous parlez,

and which word in the sentence has the stress on it,

et quel mot dans la phrase est accentué.

which word you want to emphasise.

Sur quel mot vous voulez mettre l'emphase.

Now, in school, you've learnt that the pronunciation of the contraction is "I'll",

A l'école, vous avez appris que la prononciation de cette contraction est "I'll",

yes, that's true, but,

et c'est vrai, mais

that's not the only way that you can pronounce this contraction.

ce n'est pas la seule façon dont vous pouvez prononcer la contraction.

If you pronounce it "I'll",

Si vous la prononcez "I'll",

for example, "I'll go",

par exemple : "I'll go",

it sounds like you're emphasising the pronoun.

on dirait que vous mettez l'emphase sur le pronom.

"I'll go"

"I'll go" (= J'irai)

"Who will go?" "He won't go, I'll go!"

"Qui ira?" "Il n'ira pas, J'irai!"

Now, maybe you don't want to emphasise the pronoun,

Après, peut-être que vous ne voulez pas mettre l'emphase sur le pronom,

maybe you're just speaking quickly.

peut-être que vous parlez juste rapidement.

In this case, the "I'll",

Dans ce cas, le "I'll",

sounds like 'I'll" (the fast way)

sonne comme "I'll" (prononcé rapidement).

Shorter, weaker,

Plus rapide, moins accentué,

"I'll go"

"I'll go".

So, there, you have two possible pronunciations,

Donc, là, vous avez deux prononciations possibles,

"I'll"

"I'll"

say it with me,

dites-le avec moi,

"I'll" and [...] (I'll, the fast way)"

"I'll" et "I'll" (prononcé rapidement).

"I'll go", when you emphasise the pronoun I, "I'll",

"I'll go" (= J'irai), quand vous mettez l'emphase sur le pronom : "I'll",

or, just in normal speech, "I'll go" (the fast way).

ou, dans une conversation de tous les jours, "I'll go" (plus rapidement).

Now, you may have seen our video

in which we explain that the /l/ sound

sometimes can sound like a /w/ sound.

So, instead of /l/,

it can sound like /w/.

And the same applies to this, so "I'll"

could be pronounced like "I'll" (the fast way).

Example : "I'll go".

But, again, in speech, it sounds faster and weaker, so...

Mais, encore une fois, c'est prononcé plus vite et avec moins d'accentuation, donc...

The "I'll" sounds like " 'll".

So, if you really want to pronounce everything very carefully,

Donc, si vous voulez tout prononcer de façon très précise,

you could say "I'll go",

vous pouvez dire "I'll go"

but that's not very common,

mais c'est pas très courant,

and it's more common that you'll hear " 'll go".

et vous entendrez "I'll go" (la manière rapide) plus souvent.

The rest of the pronouns, ok!

Pour le reste des pronoms :

"You will" contacts to "you'll",

"You will" se contracte en "you'll",

or "you'll" (the fast way)

ou "you'll" (rapidement).

"You'll be fine"

"You'll be fine" (= tout va bien se passer)

"Don't worry, you'll be fine"

"Don't worry, you'll be fine" (= ne t'inquiète pas, tout va bien se passer).

This way is much more common.

C'est beaucoup plus courant d'entendre ça comme ça.

Say it with me : "Don't worry, you'll be fine".

Dites-le avec moi : "Don't worry, you'll be fine".

"We will" = "we'll"

"We will" = "we'll"

"We'll", like the wheel of a car, it's the same pronunciation.

"We'll", comme le volant (=wheel) d'une voiture, c'est la même prononciation!

Also, the same rule applies, the /l/ can sound like a /w/.

La même règle s'applique ici aussi, le /l/ peut sonner comme un /w/.

So, "we'll'.

"Oh, you're going to the cinema, we'll come too"

"Oh, vous allez au cinéma? On vient aussi!"

Say it with me : "we'll come too."

Dites-le avec moi : "we'll come too."

For example.

Par exemple.

"They will" = "they'll"

"They will" = "they'll".

or, removing the /ei/ sound,

ou, en enlevant le son /ei/,

sounds like "the'll"

ça ressemble à "the'll".

Slow down :

Ralentissez : "the'll".

"Are they ok!?"

"Ils vont bien!?"

"They'll be fine"

"Tout ira bien pour eux"

"He will"

"He will"

"He'll" or "He'll" (the fast way)

"He'll" ou "he'll" (plus vite)

"Will he come to the party?"

"Il viendra à la fête?"

"He'll come."

"Il viendra".

Slow down :

Moins vite :

"He'll come"

"He'll come"

"She will" = "she'll"

"She will" = "she'll".

"She'll love it."

"She'll love it" (= elle va adorer.)

"Do you think she'll win?" "Yes, I think she'll win."

"Tu penses qu'elle va gagner?" "Oui, je pense qu'elle va gagner."

"It'll"

"It'll"

We could even use a glottal stop :

On peut même utiliser un T glottal,

"it'll" sounds better.

"it'll" sonne mieux.

How about in the negative?

Et à la forme négative?

Not many options, it's quite easy for this.

Pas beaucoup d'options, c'est plutôt facile,

To make it negative, we add "not".

Pour mettre la phrase à la forme négative, on ajoute "not".

"I'll not"

"I'll not"

Ok, but that's not very common,

Ok. Mais c'est pas très courant.

It's better just to contract this : "I won't".

C'est mieux de le contracter en "I won't".

And the same for the rest of the pronouns.

Et pareil pour le reste des pronoms.

So, negative's easy.

Le négatif, c'est facile.

"Won't"

"Won't"
