Love idioms - English vocabulary (Part 1)

Welcome to our first class on love and relationships idioms!

Let's begin! Let's imagine you see someone, and instantly...

Love happens!

Instantly,

love!

We can say it's "love at first sight",

so when you begin to feel love for someone for the first time,

you "fall in love with them",

or "you fall for them".

So, in this case,

He fell for her, or he fell in love with her.

Be careful, remember, "fall" is present,

past of "fall"?

"fell"

Not "felt".

Many people in spelling write it "felt",

It's not, it's "fall"... "fer"... "fell"... F***

Then, they start talking :

- "Hi, you're really pretty"

- "You're really handsome"

- "You look really good today"

- "Oh so do you hihihihihihihi"

Then, something happens :

You both decide "ok you're my boyfriend, ok you're my girlfriend",

you "get together" or you "get with that person".

So, in that case, we can say :

They got together,

or, he/she got with him/her

you can say it both ways.

Your relationship begins.

So, when you're in a relationship,

maybe this will happen :

you might need to explain that actually, you're not single,

you have a boyfriend, you have a girlfriend,

or maybe,

you're involved with someone.

For this, you would say :

you are seeing someone, or

you're dating someone.

Be careful with the word "date",

because in latin languages, it can mean a different thing,

So, he's asked the question

"Are you single?" or "Do you have a boyfriend?",

"Are you seeing anyone?"

She could say :

"Sorry, I'm seeing someone."

"I'm not single", "I'm in a relationship", "I'm involved with someone",

"I'm seeing someone"

or yes, "I'm dating someone".

Then, unfortunately,

one day, maybe this will happen :

Terrible! So, if one of the people in the relationship

kisses someone else or does something with someone else,

we'd say they cheated.

Or, we could say they cheated on the other person

So in this case, it would be :

"He cheated on her

with her",

the other woman, or other guy, whatever the situation is.

I've seen students doing this for this,

English people, we don't use that,

for us, it just means a boar or horns,

but it has no connection to this situation.

So if you do this to English person,

we don't know what that means.

So, if this happens in a relationship, what could happen next?

Of course, if someone cheats on the other person,

probably they're going to break up.

To break up means to end the relationship, to finish with that person.

We could say, "she.." what's the past of "break"?

"Broke".

Or we can say "split", in the past,

it's irregular, "split" again.

We can say "she broke up/she split up with him"

If you want to break up with someone,

you can, you could say this,

"I'm breaking up with you",

"I want to break up".

Let's do a bonus idiom!

So, it's a sad story!

First, they fell in love, they fell for eachother,

then, they got together, they were a lovely couple,

then, he cheated on her,

then, she broke up with him, they broke up,

but what usually happens in this situation?

6 months later, maybe...

They're not broken up anymore,

they're together again,

how do we say "to start a relationship"?

Here, we can say "they got together",

but we want to say "again", a repeat of something.

Which preposition means "again" or "a repeat of something"?

Of course : "back". "They got back together"

So, this would mean

they started a relationship again.
