Can you sing?

歌は得意ですか？

I like to sing very much, but I don't have a great singing voice.

私はあまり上手く歌えません

I'm better at playing the piano.

I understand music pretty well,

音楽はよく分かっています

and of course I understand the English language quite well,

so I feel confident that I can guide you to have better intonation and rhythm in English.

In some ways, speaking a language is like singing a song.

話すことと歌うことは似ています

There are words. There's a melody.

言葉とメロディ そしてリズムがあります

And there's a rhythm.

Every language has its own music.

言語は音楽を奏でます

I bet that even if you don't speak other languages,

たとえ外国語が話せなくても

you can probably recognize them based on what you hear, right?

聞こえる音の違いは分かりますよね

If you want to sound more natural in English,

自然な英語を話すためには

then you have to listen carefully to the musical quality

音の違いを注意深く 聞き取る必要があります

of the English language.

English is a stress-timed language.

英語はストレスタイミング言語です

What does that mean?

ストレスとは？

ストレスのある音は長く発音され ビートを踏みます

ストレスのない音は短く発音され ビートは踏みません

音の長短でリズムをつくります

First, let's talk about words.

単語から始めましょう

English words of two or more syllables have stressed and unstressed sounds.

２音節以上の単語には ストレスの有無があります

A stressed sound is generally louder, longer, and at a higher pitch.

ストレスのある音は強く

長く高い音で発音します

For example, English.

たとえば

DA-da

ENglish

Next, let's talk about sentences.

文章はどうでしょうか

English sentences have stressed and unstressed words.

文章の単語にも ストレスの有無があります

We stress content words.

名詞・動詞・形容詞 副詞といった内容語には

Like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs...

Words that carry meaning.

ストレスを置きます

Function words, like articles and prepositions,

冠詞や前置詞の機能語には ストレスは置きません

are normally unstressed.

We say the more softly and generally faster.

弱く短い音で発音します

Our content words fall on the beat.

内容語にはビートがありますが 機能語にはありません

Function words are off beat.
