for beginning a telephone conversation in english

so of course you need the phone number

you need dial the phone

but what happen when a person pick up the phone

ok step one you need to say this is and then your name

you say your name slowly and clearly and loudly

step two you want to ask likely for person you like to talk to

so very polite way is may I please speak to

or May I please speak with

and then you say the person name

Ahh..so may I please speak with John Smith

ok that is very polite

if you calling for friend

or just someone you wanna speak with more casually you can say is John there

Is John there ok a little bit more casual

so you should you gonna be polite or casual that the second step

the third step now is very importance

after you get the personal on the phone

and I get John Smith on the phone

he said Hello this is John Smith

then I need to say again Hi this is Gabby Wallace

and I need to make a little a small talk

hi John how are you how was your weekend

How was work what are you up to

are you busy is this a good time to talk

so actually two things going on

you wanna ask it was a good time to talk

or the person to busy so give them opportinity

to say yes I can talk

or no actually now not a good time

and I will call you back later

and a little small talk

small talk show your interesting a person

that your being friendly

your being polite and it just kind of make person feel more open to talking to you

in a business or social type situation

alright so let talk the 3 steps for starting your phone call

say your name you ask for the person you wanna talk to
