and positive, but it's also really, really important to know

지내는 것이 좋긴 하지만, 저는 여러분이 화가 나거나 짜증이 났을 때

how to express yourself when you're angry or annoyed.

어떻게 표현하는지 아는 것도 매우 매우 중요하다고 생각했어요.

Getting angry or annoyed is human nature

화가 나거나 짜증이 나는 것은 인간의 본성이고

and we need to know how to express ourselves,

우리는 그것들을 어떻게 표현해야 하는지 알아야 합니다.

so I'm taking care of that today.

그래서 전 오늘 이 주제에 대해 얘기해 보려고 합니다.

Now I'm sure many of you will know the typical,

more basic ones like angry, cross, mad.

But, today I want to share with you

more alternative vocabulary, more advanced vocabulary,

and some idioms and some expressions that you can use.

Just a quick warning, a couple of the words that I'm going

The first bit of new vocabulary

첫 번째로 여러분께 보여 드릴 것은

that I'm going to share with you

is actually a phrasal verb and this is to piss off.

구동사이고 'to piss off'입니다.

And you can also be pissed off.

여러분이 'piss off'될 수도 있습니다.

And it means to make angry or to annoy.

'화나게 하다' 혹은 '짜증나게 하다'의 뜻입니다.

So I could say, I felt really pissed off

즉 "난 누군가가 내 차를

when I saw that somebody had scratched my car.

긁어 놓은 것을 봤을 때 'piss off' 되었다."

Or I think I really pissed my teacher off

혹은 "난 내가 기한 내에 숙제를 제출하지 않아

when I didn't hand in my homework on time.

선생님을 정말 'piss off'하게 한 것 같아." 라고 할 수 있습니다.

Just so you know, that word, to piss off,

뜻을 알려 드리자면, 'to piss off'나 'piss on its own'은

piss on its own is actually a vulgar word for

'오줌을 누다'의 비속어입니다.

to urinate, so it's not respectful.

전혀 존중하는 어투가 아닙니다.

So around friends, very informal situations.

그러므로 친구 주변이나 아주 비공식적인 상황에서만 사용하세요.

But, it's important you understand it.

하지만 여러분이 이해하시는 게 중요하겠죠?

The next one is another phrasal verb and this is

다음은 다른 구동사입니다.

to rile somebody up, to rile one up.

to rile somebody up, to rile one up입니다.

And again it means to make somebody angry,

다시, 누군가를 화나게 하거나

to push them until they maybe explode or lose their temper.

누군가가 폭발하거나 이성을 잃을 때까지 귀찮게 한다는 뜻입니다.

So to rile up or to rile somebody up is to make them angry.

그러므로 to rile up, to rile somebody up은 누군가를 화나게 한다는 뜻입니다.

So I could say, somebody's been picking on me for a while

"누군가가 나한테 계속 집적거리고 있고

and they're really riling me up,

그들은 나를 정말 'rile up'한다."고 말할 수 있습니다.

I feel like I'm going to lose my temper.

'내 이성을 잃을 것 같다.'

OK, the next words all go with the verb to be.

자, 다음 단어들은 'to be'와 함께 따라나옵니다.

So these are all ways to say to be angry, or to be annoyed.

이 단어들은 '화가 나다', '짜증 나다'를 말할 수 있는 모든 방법입니다.

So the first one, to be livid.

첫 번째, 'to be livid'.

Livid just means really, really, really angry.

livid는 그냥 '매우 매우 매우 화가 난'이라는 뜻입니다.

Then we have to be fuming.

다음은 'to be fuming'이고

Again, similar to livid, really, really angry.

livid와 비슷하게, '매우 매우 매우 화가 난'입니다.

Then we have to be seething.

그리고 'to be seething.'입니다.

If you seethe you are just so angry.

여러분이 'seethe'되고 있다면 여러분은 그냥 매우 화가 난 것입니다.

Then we have a couple that aren't as strong.

그리고 방금 것들처럼 강한 표현은 아닌 것들도 있습니다.

We have to be irked.

'to be irked'.

That's annoyed and just ever so slightly pissed off.

'짜증 나는', 혹은 약간의 'pissed off'의 뜻입니다.

And we also have miffed.

그리고 'miffed'도 있습니다.

If somebody does something that makes you go oh,

만약 누군가가 여러분이 '오!'라고 하게 하면,

then you could say you feel a bit miffed.

여러분은 약간 'miffed'됐다 라고 할 수 있습니다.

And now I have some idioms for you, some expressions

그리고 여러분을 위한 약간의 숙어와 표현들도 있습니다.

that we like to use to express annoyance or anger.

짜증이나 화를 표현할 때 이것들을 자주 씁니다.

The first one is to rub somebody up the wrong way,

첫 번째는 'to rub somebody up the wrong way'입니다.

or also to rub somebody the wrong way, the up is optional.

혹은 그냥 'to rub somebody the wrong way'도 됩니다. 'the up'은 필수는 아니에요.

And to rub somebody the wrong way, think about it this way,

그리고 한 번 이렇게 생각해 볼까요?

여러분은 고양이를 맞는 방향으로 쓰다듬을 수 있습니다.

you can stroke a cat the right way

or you can stroke them the wrong way and it annoys them.

근데 다른 방향으로 쓰다듬으면 고양이들이 짜증을 낼 겁니다.

Well, this is exactly the same for people.

그리고 사람에게도 똑같이 적용해서 생각할 수 있습니다.

If you rub somebody up the wrong way, you are treating them

만약 여러분이 'rub somebody up the wrong way'하면, 여러분은 누군가를

in a way that might make them angry or annoyed.

화나게 하거나 혹은 짜증나게 하는 것이 되겠습니다.

That really rubbed me up the wrong way,

That really rubbed me up the wrong way,

that really annoyed me.

that really annoyed me.

The next one, to be at the end of one's tether.

다음은 'to be at the end of one's tether.'입니다.

So if I say I'm at the end of my tether,

만약 제가 'I'm at the end of my tether'라고 말하면

it means I am this close to losing to losing my temper.

'나는 내 이성을 잃으려면 이만큼 밖에 안 남았다.'라는 뜻입니다.

To getting really, really angry.

'매우 매우 화나게 되기 전까지.'

You've really offended me, you've really annoyed me,

'너는 나를 정말 화나게 했고, 짜증나게 해서

I'm this close to really exploding.

내가 폭발하려면 이만큼 밖에 남지 않았다.'

Another very similar one is the last straw.

이것과 매우 비슷한 다른 표현으로는 'the last straw.'가 있습니다.

So the last straw is that final thing in a collection

그러니까 ‘the last straw’는 여러분을 짜증나게 해 왔던 많은

of many little things that have annoyed you,

'사소한 것들의 모음' 중 마지막입니다.

but that one thing it's the last straw,

그 마지막 하나는 one straw이고, 그것이

it's the thing that makes you lose your temper.

여러분의 이성을 잃게 만드는 것입니다.

So I could say I had a terrible day

즉 'I had a terrible day

but my running training being cancelled was the last straw.

but my running training being cancelled was the last straw.'라고 할 수 있겠습니다.

I just, pff, screw it, was really angry.

'후, 빡친다, 엄청 화났었다.'

The next two are about losing your temper.

마지막 두 개는 'losing temper'에 대한 것들입니다.

And obviously if you lose your temper it means (snaps)

확실하게, 만약 여러분이 'lose temper'하면

that's it, you are angry, you are shouting,

바로 그겁니다. 여러분은 화가 났고, 소리를 지르고 있고,

you get maybe a bit aggressive.

공격적이게 될 수 있습니다.

So one way of saying to lose one's

그리고 'to lose one's temper'을 말하는 다른 방법으로는

temper is to lose one's rag.

'to lose one's rag'가 있습니다.

So rag replaces temper in this case.

즉 이 경우에는 rag가 temper을 대신합니다.

So if somebody lost their rag it means they

만약 누군가가 'lose rag'했다면 그들이

exploded in a fit of anger.

욱해서 폭발했다는 뜻입니다.

And another option is to fly off the handle.

다른 옵션으로는 'to fly off the handle'이 있습니다.

Again to lose one's rag, to fly off the handle,

다시 매우 화난다는 뜻입니다.

to lose one's temper.
