How to talk about WEATHER in English - grammar, adjectives, verbs, nouns & idioms

Today I'm going to talk to you about how to describe

اليوم سوف اتحدث معكم عن كيفية وصف

the weather in English.

الجو بالانغليزية

We're going to start off quite basic

سوف نبدا بالاساسيات

and move up to more advanced vocabulary.

و من ثم ننتقل لمفردات متقدمة اكثر

I'm going to guide you through seasonal weather,

سوف ارشدكم من خلال الجو الموسمي

hot weather, cold weather, wet weather, windy weather,

الجو الحار , الجو البارد , الجو الرطب , الجو العاصف

and I'm going to give you verbs, nouns, adjectives,

و سوف اعطيكم افعال , اسماء , صفات

and idiomatic expressions.

و تعابير اصطلاحية

Idioms.

We're also going to do a little bit of basic grammar

و سوف نقوم بالقليل من القواعد الاساسية

at the beginning.

You may know that British people are famous

من الممكن انكم تعلمون ان البريطانيين مشهورون

for always talking about the weather,

بتحدثهم كثيرا عن الطقس

and this is because we are lucky enough

و ذلك لاننا محظوظون كفاية

to have four strong seasons.

لامتلاك 4 فصول قوية

Winter, which is really cold.

الشتاء , و هو بارد جدا

Spring, which is sunny and wet at the same time.

الربيع , و هو مشمس و رطب في الوقت نفسه

Summer, which is normally hot and sunny.

الصيف , و هو بشكل طبيعي حار و مشمس

And autumn, which is colder and with lots of wind,

و الخريف , و هو اكثر برودة مع الكثير من الرياح

and when all the trees lose their leaves.

و عندما جميع الاشجار تفقد اوراقها

I'm going to talk to you today

سوف اتحدث معكم اليوم

about different weather vocabulary that you can find

عن مختلف المفردات المتعلقة بالطقس التي يمكنكم ان تجدوها

in each of the four seasons.

في كل من الفصول الاربعة

But first, let's discuss how to talk about the weather

لكن في البداية , دعونا نتحدث عن كيفية الحديث عن الطقس

from a grammar point of view.

من وجهة نظر القواعد

This grammar is fairly basic.

هذه القواعد اساسية الي حد ما

So if you're looking for advanced vocabulary,

لذلك اذا كنت تبحث عن مفردات متقدمة

click to the time shown onscreen.

If you want to use an adjective, for example, warm,

اذا تريد ان تستخدم صفة , على سبيل المثال , دافئ

you could say, "The weather is warm."

يمكن ان تقول "الطقس دافئ"

The weather is adjective.

الطقس "صفة"

You could also say, "It is warm."

يمكنك ان تقول ايضا "انها دافئة"

It is adjective.

انها "صفة"

But it only really makes sense if the adjective

لكنها تكون منطقية اذا كانت الصفة

is related to the weather.

لها علاقة بالطقس

If you say, "It is good," I might wonder, well, what's good?

ان تقول "انه جيد" , من الممكن ان اتسائل "ما هو الجيد؟"

But if you say, "It is warm,"

لكن ان تقول "انها دافئة "

I know that you're talking about the weather.

اعلم بأنك تتحدث عن الطقس

You can also say, "It's a warm day."

يمكنك ان تقول ايضا "انه يوم دافئ"

It's a adjective day.

انه يوم "صفة"

But what if you want to use a verb, for example, rain,

لكن ماذا اذا اردت ان تستخدم فعل , مثلا , يمطر

the verb, to rain?

الفعل يمطر

You would say, "It is raining."

تقول "انها تمطر"

It is verb plus I-N-G.

انها " فعل +ing"

That's if you want to talk about the weather right now.

ذلك اذا تريد التحدث عن الطقس حاليا

If you want to talk about yesterday or the past,

اذا تريد التحدث عن اليوم السابق او الماضي

you would say, "Yesterday, it rained."

تقول "البارحة , لقد امطرت"

Yesterday, it verb plus E-D.

البارحة , فعل+ed

Apart from the irregular verbs,

بعيدا عن الافعال غير النظامية

which have their own conjugation.

التي تمتلك تصريفها

If you want to talk about tomorrow or the future,

اذا تريد التحدث عن الغد او المستقبل

you can say, "It will rain tomorrow."

يمكن ان تقول "سوف تمطر غدا "

It will verb tomorrow.

سوف "فعل" غدا

Or, "It's going to rain tomorrow."

او , " انها ستمطر غدا "

It's going to verb tomorrow.

انها س "فعل" غدا

If you want to talk about a noun, you would say,

اذا تريد ان تتحدث عن اسم , تقول :

"there is," "there was," or "there will be."

" هنالك " , "كان هنالك" او " سوف يكون هنالك "

That's present, past, future, plus the noun.

ذلك حاضر , ماضي , مستقبل بالاضافة للاسم

There is a storm.

هنالك عاصفة

There was a storm.

كان هنالك عاصفة

There will be a storm.

سوف يكون هنالك عاصفة

Right.

حسنا

So now that's out of the way, first let's talk about winter,

الان , لندع ذلك , بالبداية لنتحدث عن الشتاء

the month that I am in now in England.

الشهر الذي انا فيه الان في انغلترا

I'm going to start out with adjectives,

سوف ابدأ بالصفات

and I warn you, there are a lot of adjectives

و انا احذركم , هنالك الكثير من الصفات

associated with winter.

المرتبطة بالشتاء

You can say "cold."

يمكن القول "بارد"

Cold.

بارد

Bitter, bitter.

قارس

That's very, very cold.

ذالك بارد جدا جدا

It's just a step further than cold.

انها خطوة ابعد من "بارد"

You could even put them together

يمكن ان تضعوهم معا

and say, "It's bitterly cold."

و القول "انه برد قارس"

It's bitterly cold.

انه برد قارس

You can say "It's chilly," which is slightly cold,

يمكن القول "انه قشعريري" , و هو برد بعض الشيء

or chilling.

او chilling

That's a little bit more.

ذلك اكثر قليلا

Crisp.

crisp

Crisp normally means it's cold and dry,

crisp تعني انها باردة و جافة

or maybe it's icy.

او ربما "انه جليدي"

Icy.

جليدي (مثلج)

You can say, "It's freezing," or "It's frosty."

يمكن القول , "انها مجمدة" او "انها مثلجة"

You can also say, "It is severe," or "It is wintry."

يمكن القول "انها قارسة" او "انه شتوي"

That means it's a very wintry day.

ذلك يعني انه يوم شتوي جدا

It feels like winter and it is winter.

انها كالشتاء و هو الشتاء

If it's winter and the weather conditions are very bad,

اذا كان الشتاء و وضع الطقس سيء جدا

the skies are grey, you can say, "It's gloomy,"

السماء رمادية , يمكن القول " انه معتم" (او قاتم)

or "It's bleak."

او " انه كئيب"

Or if there's a lot of very aggressive weather,

او اذا كان هنالك الكثير من الجو العدواني

you can say, "It's harsh."

يمكن القول " انه قاسي"

We often talk about a harsh winter.

بالعادة نحن نتلكم عن الشتاء القاسي

Now let's talk about some verbs.

الان لنتحدث عن بعض الافعال

You can say "to snow,"

يمكن القول " لتثلج"

which is obviously white, fluffy stuff falling from the sky.

و الذي هو بشكل واضح شيء ابيض و رقيق ينزل من السماء

To sleet.

sleet

Sleet is partly frozen rain.

sleet هو المطر المتجمد

So it's like very wet snow or very, very cold,

انه كالثلج الرطب او المطر البارد جدا جدا

almost frozen rain.

تقريبا متجمد

It's normally very unpleasant.

طبيعيا هو غير سار (مكروه)

If it's sleeting, I go inside.

اذا كانت sleeting , سوف اذهب للداخل

You can also say "to hail."

يمكن القول ايضا "وابل"

If it's hailing, it means that little hailstones,

اذا كانت تمطر بردا , انه يعني ذلك برد

little, tiny balls of ice, well, normally tiny,

الصغير , كرات صغيرة من الثلج , صغيرا بشكل طبيعي

but there are big ones, are falling from the sky.

لكن هنالك كرات كبيرة , تنزل من السماء

It's completely frozen rain.

انه مطرمتجمد تماما

You can also say "to freeze," or "to freeze over."

يمكن القول"تجمد" او "to freeze over"

And to freeze over means covered with a layer of ice.

to freeze over تعني مغطى بطبقة من الثلج

So I might say, "My pond has frozen over."

لذا يمكن ان اقول " بركتي السباحة مغطاه بطبقة من الثلج"

My pond is covered with ice.

بركتي مغطاة بالثلج

Now some nouns you might use to describe winter.

الان بعض الاسماء التي من الممكن ان تستخدمها لوصف الشتاء

So we've got sleet, hail, snow, frost,

لدينا : البَرَد , الوابل , الثلج , الصقيع

as I've mentioned before.

كما ذكرت سابقا

You also have blizzard, which is a windy snowstorm.

لديك ايضا blizzard , و هي العاصفة الثلجية

And for some idioms, you can have a cold snap,

و بالنسبة للتعابير , موجة البرد

which is a short period of cold weather,

التي هي مدة قصيرة من الطقس البارد

or you can be frozen to death, or frozen to the bone,

او يمكنك ان تكون متجمد حتى الموت , متجمد حتى العظام

which means you are completely frozen through.

و ذلك يعني انك متجمد كليا

Right.

حسنا

Let's talk about spring.

لنتحدث عن الربيع

Spring is known for being sunny and rainy.

الربيع معروف بكونه مشمس وممطر

It's warm and it's wet,

انه دافئ و رطب

and it's when all of the plants start to grow.

فيه جميع النباتات تبدأ بالنمو

Adjectives you can use are cool.

الصفات التي يمكن ان تستعملها : برودة باعتدال

It means it's not cold.

ذلك يعني انها ليست باردة

It's not unpleasant.

انها ليست بغيضة (غير سارة)

Nor is it warm.

ولا دافئة

Mild is the same thing.

"معتدل" الامر ذاته

Mild.

معتدل

Fresh, as well.

منعش ايضا

It's a very fresh day.

انه يوم منعش جدا

You can say, "It's bright."

يمكن القول " انها مشرقة"

The sun is out.

الشمس قد خرجت

You can say "breezy," which means a light wind.

يمكن القول " كثير النسمات " , الذي يعني الريح الخفيف

It's normally very pleasant and welcomed.

طبيعيا (النسمة) لطيفة و مرحب بها

When you're talking about clouds, you can say "cloudy,"

عندما تتحدث عن الغيوم , يمكن القول "غائم"

or slightly more advanced, is overcast,

او متقدم اكثر قليلا , انه متلبد بالغيوم

where there is some sunlight,

حيث هنالك القليل من ضوء الشمس

but there are also some clouds,

لكن هنالك بعض الغيوم ايضا

meaning that you don't have a completely sunny day.

و ذلك يعني انه اليوم ليس مشمس كليا

It's overcast.

انه متلبد بالغيوم(غائم بشكل جزئي)

You hear the meteorologists on weather stations

تسمع خبراء الارصاد الجوية في محطات الطقس

talking about an overcast day quite a lot.

يتحدثون عن اليوم الغائم جزئيا كثيرا نوعا ما

One that's not so positive is muggy.

واحدة ليست ايجابية جدا هي : رطب و حار

And this is if the air is very, very humid.

و ذلك اذا كان الهواء رطب جدا جدا

It's can be cold or hot,

ممكن ان يكون بارد او حار

and you can have a muggy summer's day as well,

يمكن ان تكون ايام الصيف رطبة حارة ايضا

but it means there's high humidity in the air.

لكنها تعني انه هنالك رطوبة عالية في الهواء

Another word you can say is simply "wet."

كلمة اخرى يمكن ان تقولها " مبلل"

It's a wet day.

انه يوم مبلل

It's been raining a lot.

انها تمطر كثيرا

Time for some verbs.

انه وقت بعض الافعال

Well, talking about rain, you can say "to drizzle."

حسنا ,الحديث عن المطر , يمكن القول "رذاذ"

It's drizzling.

انها تمطر خفيفا

This means it's a constant but gentle flow of rain.

انها تعني انه المطر مستمر لكن يتدفق بلطف

To shower, pretty much the same.

to shower, تقريبا نفس الشيء

That means it's more sporadic or occasional.

ذلك يعني انه متفرق أو متباعد(متقطع)

Meteorologists normally say you can expect showers

خبراء الارصاد الجوية يقولون يمكن توقع الshowers

throughout the day, which means occasional patches of rain.

خلال اليوم , و ذلك يعني مطر متفرق

You can say "to pour," which is where it rains

يمكن القول "ينسكب" , عندما تمطر

really, really heavily.

بشكل غزير

Moving on to the nouns, you've got rain,

ننتقل للاسماء , يوجد مطر

which is uncountable.

و هو غير معدود

You've got a shower, which is a light patch of rain.

و يوجد shower , و هو مطر متفرق

You can also have a downpour,

و يوجد هطول (انهمار)

which is a really heavy patch of rain, or even a flood,

و هو مطر غزير , او حتى فيضان

where the ground becomes inundated

عندما تصبح الارض مغمورة

and can't absorb any more water.

و لا تقدر ان تمتص ماء اكثر

Idioms.

التعابير

You can say "to chuck it down,"

يمكن القول "to chuck it down"

which means a heavy downpour.

و ذلك يعني مطر غزير

You can say, "It's raining cats and dogs,"

و يمكن القول " انها تمطر قططا و كلابا "

although in reality we don't actually use that idiom

بالرغم من انه بالواقع لا نستعمل هذا التعبير

that much, but it seems to be the first idiom

كثيرا , لكن يبدو انه اول تعبير

that anyone ever learns.

الذي يتعلمه اي احد

You can also say "to bucket down."

يمكن ايضا قول " to buck it down"

If it's bucketing down with rain,

اذا كانت تضرب للاسفل بالمطر

it's raining really hard.

انها تمطر بشدة

And you can also be soaked through.

و يمكن ان تكون غارق كليا

This is where it's rained on you

ذلك عندما تمطر عليك

and you are really, really wet.

و انت مبلل جدا جدا

Oh my God.

يا الهي

I'm soaked through.

انا غارق كليا (soaked through)

Right.

حسنا

Let's talk about summer and adjectives that could be used

لنتحدث عن الصيف و الصفات الي يمكن استخدامها

to describe summer weather.

لوصف طقس الصيف

Firstly, of course, we have hot.

بالبداية , طبعا , لدينا "حار"

Other words that could be described hot weather

كلمات اخرى يمكن استعمالها لوصف الجو الحار

are scorching, sweltering, boiling, sunny.

حارق ، غليظ ، يغلي ، مشمس

You could also say "dry," if there's not been any rain

يمكن قول "جاف" , اذا لا يوجد اي مطر

and there's no humidity.

ولا يوجد رطوبة

You can say, "It's a clear day,"

يمكن القول " انه يوم صافي"

if there are no clouds in the sky.

اذا لا يوجد غيوم في السماء

Or you could say, "It's very humid,"

او يمكن القول , " انها رطبة جدا"

if the air is very wet.

اذا كان الهواء رطب جدا

You can also say, "It's blistering."

يمكن القول ايضا "انها لاذعة"

A blistering sun.

الشمس اللاذعة

Verbs.

You can say "to shine."

الافعال

يمكن القول "تسطع"

The sun is shining.

الشمس تسطع

You can also say, "The sun is burning,"

يمكن ايضا القول : "الشمس تحترق "

if it's especially hot.

اذا كانت خصوصا حارة

And you can also say "to scorch,"

و يمكن القول ايضا " تلذع"

just like the adjective.

فقط مثل الصفة

Nouns.

الاسماء

The only extras really to add are sunshine,

الاضافات الوحيدة للاضافة هي "ضوء الشمس"

which we like to say a lot and to talk about the heat.

التي نحب ان نقولها كثيرا و عند الحديث عن الحرارة

Now there are a couple of idioms

الان هنالك بضع التعابير

relating to our reactions to the sun.

المتعلقة بردة الفغل للشمس

You can say "to catch some rays,"

يمكن القول " التقاط بعض الاشعة "

which means to absorb some of the sunshine

و ذلك يعني امتصاص البعض من ضوء الشمس

and maybe get a tan.

او الحصول على الاسمرار

You can also say "to go brown,"

و يمكن القول "التحول للبني"

which again refers to tanning.

الذي مجددا يعود للاسمرار

You can also soak up the sun,

يمكنك ايضا ان "تمتص الشمس"

which means the same thing again.

و ذلك يعني نفس الشيء مجددا

And when talking about sweating,

و عند الحديث عن التعرق

you can sweat like a pig.

يمكنك التعرق كال"خنزير"

Oh my God, I'm sweating like a pig,

يا الهي , انا اتعرق كالخنزير

which means I'm sweating a lot.

و ذلك يعني انا اتعرق كثيرا

Finally, let's talk about autumn,

و اخيرا , لنتحدث عن الخريف

or as they say in America, fall.

او كما يقولون في امريكا "fall"

In British English, we say "autumn,"

في الانغليزية البريطانية , نقول "autumn"

but we do understand what fall means

لكننا نفهم ماذا "fall" تعني

because we see it on the TV and the movies.

لاننا نراها على التلفاز و في الافلام

But in America, they say "fall."

في امريكا هم يقولون "fall"

Some adjectives relating to autumn.

بعض الصفات المتعلقة بالخريف

My favourite and the most descriptive is autumnal.

المفضلة لدي و الاكثر وصفيا هي "خريفي"

Autumnal.

خريفي

It's a very autumnal day.

انه يوم خريفي جدا

It tends to be windier in autumn.

انها تميل الي ان تكون عاصفا اكثر في الخريف

So you can say "windy."

لذلك يمكن القول "عاصف"

Another lovely one is blustery.

صفة اخرى لطيفة هي "متهيج"

It's a blustery day.

انه يوم متهيج

And it can also be misty or foggy,

و من الممكن ان يكون سديمي او ضبابي

which is when there is cold moisture in the air,

و ذلك عندما يكون هنالك رطوبة باردة في الهواء ,

normally in the mornings.

طبيعيا في الصباح

Some verbs specifically relating to wind.

بعض الافعال خصوصا متعلقة بالرياح

It can be howling with wind, to howl.

ممكن ان تكون عاصفة بالهواء , للعصف

Or to blow, as well.

او لتهب , ايضا

The wind is blowing.

الرياح تهب

Nouns.

الاسماء

A gale, a strong wind.

نوبة, رياح قوية

A hurricane, a very, very strong wind.

اعصار , رياح قوية جدا جدا

A tornado.

زوبعة

That's when wind goes around in a vortex.

ذلك عندما يدور الهواء في دوامة

And you've also got mist and fog, which I mentioned before,

و يوجد ايضا الغشاوة و الضباب , كما ذكرت سابقا

which is cold moisture in the air.

الذي يعني المرطب البارد في الهواء

Right.

حسنا
