In this lesson we're going  to look at PREPOSITIONS. 

, ਇਸ ਪਾਠ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਪੋਜ਼ਿਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਣ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

Prepositions are small words like ‘at’, ‘up’, ‘on’ and ‘between’,  

ਅਗੇਤਰ 'at', 'up', 'on' ਅਤੇ 'between' ਵਰਗੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,

that usually come before a noun or pronoun  and show the relationship between the words.

ਜੋ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਂਵ ਜਾਂ ਪੜਨਾਂਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਸਬੰਧ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

My students tell me that prepositions are one  of the most difficult things about English.

Now, when learning any language,

it's important to remember that certain  words are usually said or written together.

ਇਹ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਹੇ ਜਾਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Prepositions are no exception. 

Prepositions ਕੋਈ ਅਪਵਾਦ ਨਹੀ ਹਨ.

Specific prepositions often come  after certain verbs and adjectives.

ਖਾਸ ਕਿਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਕੁਝ ਕ੍ਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

So next time you're SPEAKING TO a native speaker

or reading something in English, try to take  note of what prepositions go with which words.

ਜਾਂ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਨੋਟ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰੋ ਕਿ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Do you see what I did there?

ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਥੇ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ?

I just use the verb SPEAK. I said,

ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ SPEAK ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਕਿਹਾ,

“The next time you're  speaking __ a native speaker.” 

"ਅਗਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬੋਲ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ __ ਇੱਕ ਮੂਲ ਬੁਲਾਰੇ।"

Which preposition did I use after it?

ਮੈਂ ਇਸਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹੈ?

I said TO.

ਮੈਂ ਕਿਹਾ TO.

“The next time you're SPEAKING  TO a native speaker...”

“ਅਗਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੂਲ ਬੁਲਾਰੇ

You can also say WITH after speak,

ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਵੋਗੇ...” ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬੋਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ,

“The next time you're SPEAKING  WITH a native speaker...”

“ਅਗਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੂਲ ਬੁਲਾਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋਵੋਗੇ...”

They’re used in almost the exact same  way but there is a small difference,  

ਉਹ ਲਗਭਗ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਅੰਤਰ ਹੈ,

which I will talk about at the end of this video.

ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ।

So, let's start with prepositions  

ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਆਓ

after adjectives. First up, we've got

ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਗੇਤਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰੀਏ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਸਾਨੂੰ

INTERESTED IN

"ਮੈਨੂੰ DIY ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਹੈ" ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਹੈ

“I'm interested in DIY.”

or

“I'm interested in working at your company.”

ਜਾਂ

"ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਕੰਪਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ।"

So, when you say ‘interested’ remember ‘in’.

ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ 'ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ' ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ 'ਇਨ' ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ।

"ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਹਾਂ"

“I'm GOOD AT my job.”

ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ।

“I'm GOOD AT playing the piano.”

"ਮੈਂ ਪਿਆਨੋ ਵਜਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗਾ ਹਾਂ।"

“She is GOOD AT finding practical solutions.”

"ਉਹ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਹੱਲ ਲੱਭਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੈ।"

When we talk about how well we can do  something – we use the preposition ‘AT’.

ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ - ਅਸੀਂ ਅਗੇਤਰ 'AT' ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

We also say BAD AT.

ਅਸੀਂ BAD AT ਵੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“He's BAD AT keeping secrets.”

"ਉਹ ਗੁਪਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੁਰਾ ਹੈ।"

or “They're not too BAD AT cooking.”

ਜਾਂ "ਉਹ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।"

Next, we have

ਅੱਗੇ, ਸਾਨੂੰ

AFRAID OF

We also use OF with PROUD’.

ਅਸੀਂ PROUD ਦੇ ਨਾਲ OF ਦੀ ਵੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

You can be PROUD OF what you've done.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ 'ਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਾਣ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“We are PROUD OF our progress in English.”

"ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ 'ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ।"

There are risks of course,  but he has limited options.

Now your dad isn't very good  __ talking about his feelings.

Next let's take a look at some common  verb and preposition combinations.

I'm not talking about phrasal verbs here.

ਮੈਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਫ੍ਰਾਸਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।

These are just verbs that  commonly take a preposition  

ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕਿਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ

(especially when there is an object after them).

(ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਕੋਈ ਵਸਤੂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।

First up, we've got

LISTEN TO.

ਸੁਣੋ।

“This morning I LISTENED TO  Bach while making breakfast.” 

“ਅੱਜ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਸ਼ਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਬਾਚ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਿਆ।”

“They usually LISTEN TO the radio on long drives.”

"ਉਹ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਲੰਬੀਆਂ ਡਰਾਈਵਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਰੇਡੀਓ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ."

I often hear students making  a mistake with this... 

ਮੈਂ ਅਕਸਰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਗਲਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ...

They forget to say TO after  LISTEN, but if you're saying what  

ਉਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ TO ਕਹਿਣਾ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਹ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ ਜੋ

you are LISTENING TO, then you  have to use the preposition.

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸੁਣ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ , ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ।

You can just say LISTEN, if you want  someone to do the action, but if you say  

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸੁਣੋ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਰੇ, ਪਰ ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਹ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ

what you want them to listen TO after, it's  only correct if you have the preposition.

ਜੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਹੈ।

“LISTEN TO this!”

“ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣੋ!”

“Hey, LISTEN TO me!”

"ਹੇ, ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣੋ!"

or just

ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼

“LISTEN!”

"ਸੁਣੋ!"

We also use the preposition  TO with the verb BELONG.

ਅਸੀਂ BELONG ਕਿਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਅਗੇਤਰ TO ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“This book BELONGS TO Caspian.”

“ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਕੈਸਪੀਅਨ ਦੀ ਹੈ।”

or

ਜਾਂ

“Who does this jacket BELONG TO?”

"ਇਹ ਜੈਕਟ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਹੈ?"

Another verb students often miss  the preposition after is WAIT.

ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਅਕਸਰ WAIT ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

We have to say what you're WAITING FOR.

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ।

Like the song, “What you waiting FOR?”

ਗੀਤ ਵਾਂਗ, "ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ?"

Now this is another tip I have  to help you learn prepositions. 

ਹੁਣ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਟਿਪ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ।

Try to actively search for prepositions used in  your favourite songs, especially if they're used  

ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨਪਸੰਦ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਤੇ ਗਏ ਅਗੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਖੋਜ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰੋ, ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ

after a verb or adjective because then you'll  know which prepositions to use after that word.

ਕਿਸੇ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਫਿਰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਅਗੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ।

Remember that songs aren't always grammatically  correct, but they're still a fun way to learn.

We can say,

“The salary DEPENDS ON your previous experience.”

"ਤਨਖਾਹ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਅਨੁਭਵ 'ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।"

or

“I am so happy I can DEPEND ON my friends.”

ਜਾਂ

"ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਸਤਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।"

DEPEND ON

DEPEND ON

We also use ON with SPEND.

ਅਸੀਂ SPEND ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ON ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

We SPEND money or time ON something.

ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ 'ਤੇ ਪੈਸਾ ਜਾਂ ਸਮਾਂ ਖਰਚ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

“I SPENT 20 pounds ON this!”

"ਮੈਂ ਇਸ 'ਤੇ 20 ਪੌਂਡ ਖਰਚ ਕੀਤੇ!"

Or you might say,

ਜਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ,

“I don't have a lot to SPEND ON this jacket.”

"ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਇਸ ਜੈਕਟ 'ਤੇ ਖਰਚ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।"

And from the context, we will understand  that you're talking about money.

ਅਤੇ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਤੋਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਸਮਝਾਂਗੇ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੈਸੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ।

We could also say,

ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ,

“I don't want to SPEND too long ON this decision.

"ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ 'ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਰਚਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ।

And we will understand that  you're talking about time.

ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਮਝਾਂਗੇ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ।

Or your boss might ask,

ਜਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਬੌਸ ਪੁੱਛ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,

“How long did you SPEND ON this report?”

When we use dependent prepositions,  prepositions that go after specific  

ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਨਿਰਭਰ ਅਗੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਅਗੇਤਰ ਜੋ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼

adjective or verbs they are usually  found together in the sentence.

ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਣ ਜਾਂ ਕਿਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਆਮ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਵਾਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ।

But in this example,

ਪਰ ਇਸ ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ,

“I don't want to SPEND too long ON this decision.”

"ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ 'ਤੇ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਰਚਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।"

TOO LONG comes between SPEND and ON.

ਖਰਚ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਲੂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੰਮਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

We still need the preposition  because we say WHAT afterwards.

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ WHAT ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

You could say, “I don't want to SPEND too long.”

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, "ਮੈਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਖਰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ।"

But if we add THIS DECISION, then we need ON.

ਪਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਚਾਲੂ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ।

“I don't want to spend too long ON this decision.”

For certain words, we sometimes use  a preposition and sometimes we don't.

Here are some common words that can be confusing.

MARRY

When we talk about the action of getting  married, we don't use a preposition directly  

ਕਰੋ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ

after the verb. For example,

ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“She MARRIED him on June 27 1998.”

"ਉਸ ਨੇ 27 ਜੂਨ 1998 ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹ ਕੀਤਾ।"

But when we say WHO you're MARRIED  TO, then we do use the preposition.

After MARRIED we use TO.

ਵਿਆਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਸੀਂ TO ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“She's MARRIED TO my brother.”

"ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਾ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।"

or

ਜਾਂ

“I'm MARRIED TO my work.”

"ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ।"

It's true.

ASK

We don't use a preposition after ASK  when we don't say WHO we're asking.

ਅਸੀਂ ASK ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ WHO ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example, “Can you ASK the price of this?”

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ, "ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਪੁੱਛ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ?"

But we do use a preposition when  we say, WHO and WHAT we're asking.

ਪਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, WHO ਅਤੇ WHAT ਅਸੀਂ ਪੁੱਛ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“She ASKED him FOR a pen.”

"ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਪੈੱਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ।"

We use ASK + PERSON + FOR + NOUN.

ਅਸੀਂ ASK + PERSON + FOR + NOUN ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

“They ASKED ME FOR a loan of £100.”

"ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ £100 ਦੇ ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ।"

And we use ASK + the INFINITIVE when we say  

ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ASK + INFINITIVE ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ

what we're asking someone to do. For example,

ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ। ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“She ASKED HIM TO WRITE his name.” Another example is,

"ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ।" ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਉਦਾਹਰਣ ਹੈ,

“I ASKED MY SON TO SING with me.”

"ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੇਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਹਾ।"

Now, there are also some words  that take multiple prepositions.

ਹੁਣ, ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਵੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਕਈ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

AGREE

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ

You AGREE WITH someone.

ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋ।

We say AGREE WITH when we want to say  that you think the same as another person.

ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

For example,

ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ,

“Hm, I AGREE WITH Miss Brown  on many points in her talk.”

"ਹਮ, ਮੈਂ ਮਿਸ ਬ੍ਰਾਊਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਨੁਕਤਿਆਂ 'ਤੇ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹਾਂ।"

We also use AGREE WITH to talk  about a thing or situation. 

ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜਾਂ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

“I didn't AGREE WITH what you did.”

"ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।"

or

“I AGREE WITH the ruling.”

ਜਾਂ

"ਮੈਂ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹਾਂ।"

We can also use TO after AGREE.

ਅਸੀਂ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ TO ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

When you AGREE TO DO something,  you mean that you will take action.

ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰੋਗੇ।

Here's an example, 

ਇੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਹੈ,

“She AGREED TO change the  start time of the meeting.”

"ਉਹ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲਣ ਲਈ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।"

or

ਜਾਂ

“I know they want to AGREE TO the new terms.”

"ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਰਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।"

Finally, as promised, I'll tell you the  difference between SPEAK TO and SPEAK WITH.

ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ, ਮੈਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਬੋਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਤਰ ਦੱਸਾਂਗਾ।

They are almost the same except  when we SPEAK TO someone.

ਉਹ ਲਗਭਗ ਇੱਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਸਿਵਾਏ ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

It's probable that it's less of a  conversation and more of a monologue.

ਇਹ ਸੰਭਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਦੀ ਘੱਟ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਮੋਨੋਲੋਗ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਹੈ.

One person speaking.

ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਬੋਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

“She SPOKE TO the crowd with great skill.

“ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੁਨਰ ਨਾਲ ਭੀੜ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ।

However, when we SPEAK WITH someone,  it's more likely to be a dialogue.

ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਜਦੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਵਾਦ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

“They SPOKE WITH the child's parents  to make sure everything was okay.”

"ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਬੱਚੇ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ।"

It’s a small difference. That isn't always true. You can also say,

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਰਕ ਹੈ. ਇਹ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਸੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ,

“They SPOKE TO the child's parents, of course.”

"ਬੇਸ਼ਕ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ।"

But sometimes there is this  small difference in meaning  

ਪਰ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਅਰਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਅੰਤਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ

and it's about who's doing  the majority of the talking.

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕੌਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

With SPEAK TO it's one side, doing more  talking. And with SPEAK WITH it's more equal.  

SPEAK TO ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨਾ। ਅਤੇ SPEAK WITH ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਹੋਰ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੈ।

And that's one of the reasons why  prepositions are so difficult.

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਗੇਤਰ ਇੰਨੇ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਹਨ।

Okay, so what am I most AFRAID OF?

ਠੀਕ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਗੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਡਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ?

I am most afraid of being trapped.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਫਸਣ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।

It's a fear I've had since being a young girl.

ਇਹ ਇੱਕ ਡਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸੀ.

So, I avoid busy trains and lifts  where I can and I always check  

ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਮੈਂ ਵਿਅਸਤ ਰੇਲਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲਿਫਟਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ

the locks work on a public toilet  door before I close and lock it.

ਜਨਤਕ ਟਾਇਲਟ ਦੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਬੰਦ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਕ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
